    Hey, glad I came across your video. I just run some extensive testing on both a Quest 2 and 3 and this is what I found:
    First, changing the sharpness from 0 to 1 is way too much. It adds to "fuzziness" and jumping pixels at long distances, as another poster here pointed out. It becomes detrimental to the experience. So I changed it to .3 instead of 1. I also changed offsetbias to 1.02, although I'm not sure what it does but this value seemed to work well.
    Second, I took several pics and videos of the before and after in order to carefully analyze the changes. Interestingly this only resulted in a better image, whether still or video - but it was not a representation of what you get live with the headset. Where the pics and movies looked awesome with a value of 1 for sharpness, it made for an unpleasant experience with the headset on, as noted above. This was true for both Quests 2 and 3. If you want to take pics to run your own tests, you will have to enable Experimental options in settings and enable voice commands. You will have to say "hey facefuckinbook - take a picture" or "start recording" then "stop recording". Double pressing the Meta button in the right controller does not work to bring up the voice commands (instead it will want to recentre the image).
    Please note too that if you have a GPU that meets the minimum requirements (GTX1650 Super I think) then you have room to add some Super Sampling, found in the VR settings in AMS2. With both a GTX1660 Super and a 1070, on two different PCs, I have both set at 1.5. This will greatly improve the image quality and cuts back on the "jumpiness" but you will take a hit in fps. In my case it's hovering around 30fps, which is totally playable with a VR headset. This while having every other graphic setting on ultra (including shadows - we can thank the Madness engine for this, it is super efficient). Those that think you must achieve a fps of 80 or more else you're not man enough, is just missing out on image quality. I'd much rather race at 28fps and be able to see the end of a straightway from a distance then to brag about getting 100+ fps with an image so pixelated you're pretty much running blind.
    Anyway, this was a worthy tip. Thanks for sharing. Subscribed.

    • @zacharywilliams2904
      @zacharywilliams2904 9 месяцев назад +6

      Anything below 80 in every vr headset I've ever tried is just not a good experience at all. Worse than playing flat. You must have some special eyes to be able to play at those frame rates. I mean the latency alone would be detrimental.

    • @Slakass55
      @Slakass55 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@zacharywilliams2904 The fact that you claim to have tested it in EVERY vr headset tells me that your opinion should be taken with a grain of salt. And if your experience indeed yields a poor result in the headset that you own at a fps of below 80 to be poor then it leads me to believe your gear isn't that efficient. With a vast combination of GPU and headsets in the market I suppose that experiences will vary per each individual set up. But your claim that anything below 80 fps to result in a poor experience leads me to believe you haven't got much experience in the subject. But your input is welcome nonetheless.

    • @DDFRacer

      Thanks for testing out a few different settings on a few headsets I've never used, always good to get more feedback and hopefully it'll come in useful for anyone else who might watch this and scroll through the comments section 👍
      That said, I might have to disagree with you on the fps point you raised. I've found that running lower than the native refresh rate of the headset is very noticeable and not in a nice way. It starts stuttering and chopping the image, especially when moving your head quickly to check the mirror or look out the side window for example. Most headsets offer an asynchronous warp setting which will drop to half frames (for example 80 down to 40) if the GPU is struggling and then interpolate the missing frames, but this introduces a lot of glitches around fast moving objects such as catch fencing in the peripheral vision. It's also worth noting that it's not physically possible to get better fps than the refresh rate of the headset, so if it can only do 80fps then it'll cap out and won't get any better than that. At this point you might as well max as many settings as you can otherwise you're not using the full potential of the GPU or VR.
      A lot of people suffer from motion sickness when lower frame rates or warping starts to kick in and, although you might be one of the few who either doesn't notice it or isn't bothered by it, I think I'd speak for the majority when I say that pushing the headset down as low as 28fps is a horrible experience. It's not really about bragging rights or who's man enough, I personally couldn't care less what kind of numbers my GPU is pumping out but if I start dropping frames in the VR then it's something I can notice immediately and it's absolutely jarring and gives me a headache.
      I've upgraded to a 3080 these days so don't have too many issues anymore, but a few years ago I was running the Nvidia 1080 and it would struggle on higher settings or bigger grids, I got caught out online a few times with settings that were too high and had to race with bad stuttering/low fps and really struggled to drive the car properly. Not having that fluid motion made it so much harder to judge what my car was doing and also judge the space to other cars and objects around me. I'd much rather sacrifice a bit of detail and clarity to maintain the higher framerates and fluid motion/image. Like I said though, that's just me 😎 everyone's mileage may vary.

    • @Slakass55
      @Slakass55 8 месяцев назад

      @@DDFRacer I agree, since posting this I turned the refresh rate back to 120hz, as well as the resolution back to native. Not that my weak gpu can keep up but it seem better. Of course I'm speaking from the point of view of someone on the low end of the world of VR, given my weak GPUs. So my plan is to try and get the best possible experience out of the equipment I have at my disposal. Thankfully I'm not prone to motion sickness, else this would be a horrible experience. Although in some instances I have experienced some it, usually during crashes when your car is sent spinning. Perhaps this doesn't happen at 100+ fps but again, I can only relate to my own experience. Taking a hit on fps to the point it hovers at around 30fps in order to gain better clarity is advantageous over higher fps with poor image quality - then again this from someone that saw an improvement and doesn't suffer from motion sickness. Mileage will vary, so anyone reading this, please try to see what works for you.
      This is why I listed my two GPUs in my comment, so others with similar hardware can try and learn from some of these many tips out there in order to improve their experience. Didn't want to give the impression that I'm against those with 4090s, in case it came across as such. Heaven knows I'd love to get one of these, but kids and all the expenses they incur take priority over toys. Wouldn't I love to race every track at max graphic setting at 100 fps. Maybe once the kids grow up and move out.
      I'm still trying to see what works best. Clearly a Quest 3 is an improvement over the Q2, even with below average equipment like mine. That's why I was so pleased to come across your video, lots of great tips here.

Nothing stands out like "yes, this is the one!" and makes me want to buy it. I hear nothing but negatives about newer Oculus headsets, whether it's the wireless quality drops (don't forget I'd also be using my network for streaming at the same time and even more prone to artefacts) or lower build quality such as the straps. Sure it'd be nice to have a higher resolution and sharper image, but the other aspects that come along with it just don't appeal to me. It's also not cheap to upgrade either 😅 so until my CV1 physically stops working and dies then I'll keep on using it.

    What does changing the offset bias do?
    A guy on Reddit mentioned he only changed the sharpening.

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  4 месяца назад +1

      From my understanding, the offset bias affects the distance at which the sharpening takes effect. In this instance with my settings mentioned in the video, objects that are closer have slightly less sharpening applied since it's already pretty clear in your vision, however objects that take up less space on the screen because they're further away will receive more of the sharpening effect. Here's a more technical explanation from the forums:
      Offset (0.0->6.0, default 1.0) - the offset from the current pixel for the sampling pattern (so if it's 1 it will sample neighbouring pixels, any less and it will bias towards the central pixel, any more and it will start sampling pixels outside the normal kernel).

The newer Oculus headsets don't fill me with confidence (melted charging ports, quality drops over wireless, lower build quality etc) and switching to a non Oculus based headset would need me to completely re-do my streaming capture set up since my live chat/telemetry overlays all use the built in Oculus software and are optimised to capture from the Oculus mirror. I mean, it could be done, but why spend the money and time doing that when the current setup works more than fine?

The build quality and weight are just great. The resolution upgrade was nice with the new headsets, but LCD is so inferior to OLED. You get much more blur when you're actually in motion with LCD. It removes the essence of being in VR imo. This directly correlates with PSVR's positive review success. The lower resolution of the cv1 also made it super easy to max games out and when you're in motion the resolution doesn't matter as much. I just wish it had more FOV and 120hz. My next upgrade will probably be the Bigscreen Beyond headset.

      @@linko994 When you talk about visual clarity you are simply referring to the resolution. The CV1 does everything else better than those other headsets. OLED panel superiority. Black level superiority. Contrast superiority, response time superiority, build quality superiority. The supersampled images on the CV1 were pretty clear compared to the quest 2's native. They require about the same processing power. Reading text would be the biggest con of the CV1, but most vr games are designed for lower resolutions anyways. This will change one day. The other con being 90hz only. For Sim racing I would say resolution matters the most and doing the upgrade will be worth it, but for VR gaming in general I think the CV1 is the best bang for the buck still and does things much better than most headsets. Having wireless introduces inputlag, which I did measure. I'm sensitive to it. For Sim racing it isn't a big deal. The new Bigscreen VR headset is the only one I'd consider upgrading from my CV1 to. The reason sharpening isn't used heavily, is because its a high motion game, and sharpening usually never scales well with constantly moving images, im sure theres a sweet spot of a subtle bump in clarity before shimmering takes place.
    This is really only good for a high resolution headsets, anything on low will have its shimmer aliasing exacerbated, sharpening is simply not free super sampling, and comments like such just show how new you are to the understanding of various shaders, in this case sharpening.

      Good to know, thanks 👍 always an opportunity to learn new things. Can definitely say I don't go overboard on this feature as it does cause a lot of artefacts the harder you push it, like you say, but on an older headset like my CV1 with a lower resolution it certainly helps make things like corner markers and kerbs a little clearer at greater distances.

      The graphics engine that Automobilista 2 uses is very well optimised, meaning that you can push it harder than other racing sims but still get the same level of performance. Kind of. Supersampling sharpens the image by rendering it at a higher resolution and then resizing it back down again, using a fair chunk of your GPU in the process, whereas this method applies a sharpening filter directly to the original image at no extra performance cost.

    For me OpenXR doesnt bring any performance-boost or graphical visual boost, I testet >60 hours every single option back and forward. But I use OpenXR only because of the possibility to improove the very weak contrasty look to something very contrastful realistic look. For ACC switching to OpenXR brought a massive boost in visuals and performance. Overall ACC with OpenXR looks way more nicer/realistic and even sharper than AMS2 with same performance (stable 90hz) on my hp reverb g2 with RTX 3090. So I dont understand why some people say that AMS2 is nicer in VR than ACC, after tweaking and modding it is not correct. Also the sound experience of ACC is so much better than in AMS2. But ACC hass way less cars and tracks, that is the downside..

    • @DDFRacer

      I must admit I haven't tried OpenXR but I might give it a try as performance in ACC has been severely lacking for me regardless of the hardware I've used. That said, this video refers to a simple text edit which increases the clarity in AMS2 with no performance hit whatsoever 👍

      Since you have a powerful gpu, you will want to play with the super sampling setting. In the Options, look for the VR section. It goes from 1 to 2, in .1 increments. My gpu is just a 1070 so the max I can get away with is 1.6 but that alone makes a world of difference, at the cost of fps. If you can get around 26 fps at the max SS setting of 2, you'd be golden. A lot less flickering, shadows look good, it's a lot nicer. Although with the Quest 3 it's even nicer as the image is more detailed. Oh and put everything else on ultra. It won't drop the fps, believe it or not. However remove all the lighting effects like bloom, flare, etc.

      Playing without the wire is really nice but you have to be the only user on the 5GHz band. Latency and compression artefacts aren't really an issue, given the significant increase in fidelity and you are sim racing so 80-100ms lag is not noticeable (to me at least). It really does look loads better. That said, it is definitely more faff than the direct-to-GPU wire, as you have to click into desktop link mode and from time to time the link breaks for whatever reason. It is a bit annoying and probably not acceptable for you, as you could be streaming when it happens. The extra pressure on your GPU is also significant.
      Pupil distance was not a problem for me, but not sure how lucky I had to be for that to be the case.
      Battery and comfort are both solved with the BoboVR M2 Plus, but that's another £100.
      Basically it's a bit of a hassle, but for me worth it. The Rift S went straight to ebay! All non-racing VR games are loads better without the wire, and it's one less thing to untangle when racing so I use wireless there too.

      Can't say I have tried them to be honest 🤔 I'll give it a look but generally I try and avoid changing nvidia settings that affect things on a global level as they may conflict with individual program settings and cause some funky results.

      its done when in game by pressing alt/F3 ...

      In the settings menu, under your controllers/devices, there should be an option to map a button/key to reset the VR position based on where your head is currently pointed 👍 there will also be options for seat forwards/backwards and up/down too. I'm not sure what they are by default and these will change depending on the type of wheel or device you're using too, but the options are definitely there.

      If it's similar to iRacing then it'll be the distance at which sharpening takes effect maybe? Will have to have a play around to check, but it could possibly be used to make close objects such as the cockpit sharper without applying too much to distant objects like trees and clouds etc.
