Most of the time, i also do i all over wash, then layer it back up with a few extreme thin layers. Could say glazing it back up. Gives you more control over feathering/shading for different areas. I find that it works way better for me than doing recess shading, and then adding darker wash to shaded areas. Takes longet maybe, but imo a much better finish. No right or wrong, just how i like to paint. I like to paint it a little more realistic, faded, and sometimes "gritty" (not grim dark) but clean, understand that this is a one-off cartoon like, and i really like the result! Excellent video!

Like the chapter master has spider legs, another is almost a topless khorn berserker with his hands replaced by chainswords and massive regeneration. Thank you 🙏🏻 Carcharodons is a scheme I’m going to do for sure. I love the cool freehand tribal markings. Just need to decide on a kitbash to use for it.
Excellent video! So glad to see an ultramarine painting video that aimed for that brighter blue result that many of us think of when we think ultramarines. Macragge blue is way too dark in my opinion. I really like they way you do videos too. youre very organized and get really close to the model while going over every step. Thanks!
I have been really enjoying watching your videos, and the results are fantastic. How do you pick the colour schemes and know what colours to edge highlight with?
Great video I actually used this exact same recipe for Ultramarine blue on my primaris librarian I did a few weeks ago. The pro acryl colours are great! Could of done with this tutorial would of made things a lot easier!
That is one of the nicest Space Marine paint schemes I have ever seen. Awesome video. No fluff, all content. I normally have these kind of videos on in the background while I'm painting but I had to stop and watch this one brush down.
That’s an amazing paint job, probably one of the cleanest minis I’ve seen. I did notice that the blue seems a little powdery, almost textured. As much as you said you thinned your paints to get a smooth finish I can’t help but see a rough texture to that blue. I don’t see it on the citadel paints though. Is this a property of pro acryl paints? Do you notice it, or is it just me?
Thank you I know exactly what you mean and it’s only on camera that it’s visible. Even under heavy magnification after then light spray of varnish was applied it all disappeared. I think it’s more my primer than the paint to be honest, as I get the same with citadel paints. One of the many draw backs of filming so zoomed in I fear
Thanks for watching The details of how I mount parts for sub assembly painting is in my preparing minis video ruclips.net/video/KxF8t6k39cE/видео.html About 8mins in, the chapter on attaching to handles Hope it helps
Love the blue, exactly the same colour i am about to paint my blue boys. The macragge blue is too dark for me i enjoy the brightness and making them pop. If you could do more marines, especially about doing plasma and swords that would be legit fire.
Great video. When you do the blue wash do you go back over the model with the original blue paint. Whenever I do a wash it looks streaky and dull. Yours looks really blue and bright. Thanks
Really enjoy the vibrant colors. I prefer my models to be colorful like this, I don't care much for the muted "realistic" faded colors a lot of the other RUclipsrs do.
thank you, so glad you like the brighter colour scheme. it's not easy to do a unique take on Ultramarines, but I just thought this looked really cool and was inkeeping with their lore as well It makes for a very cool looking army on the tabletop REALLY pops
Good call on the Sisters of Battle. I have a set which I’m planning on painting soon. Need to decide which scheme to go with first. I’m thinking the white armour would make a good video. For Templars, I did a picture guide a while back (before I started my RUclips) so that might be useful for you instagram.com/p/Bs6nCssHC9h/?
Thank you Really great to hear my videos are helping you. Don’t worry about making mistakes, that’s all part of the process. I still make plenty of mistakes, but it’s OK because I just try and do better next time. It’s by making mistakes we learn. Stick with it and keep having fun 🙂
Your color choices are exceptional! I think I rewatched the video 15 times. I absorbed it and put it into practice: amazing. Thanks for your videos. PS: Do you want to try Robote Guilliman with these styles? 😎🙏
Thank you If you’re still using the ProAcryl Blue rhen using a different shade for the recesses shouldn’t change things too much. I would say though that drakenhof is very strong so I would at least thin it 50;50 with medium first
Hi, please could you tell me which brush and size you use in this video for your edge highlighting? Thank you. Love your work and how you explain things in simple terms, so it makes it easier to follow. I'm just starting out, and your video's make it easy to understand.
I use Artis Opus series S brushes and the brush I used for edge highlighting in this video will have been a size 00 Here's a link to help you rb.gy/1ptxk
Love the process especially since i just started with this hobby...how do you keep the paint from drying on the brush...just working quickly or is there a specific thing im not doing?
Thank you, really glad you enjoyed the video. So, the secret to keeping your brush from drying out is “brush management” Give my paintbrush basics video a watch, it should explain it for you and more besides 👍 ruclips.net/video/chBHaXh8iko/видео.html
A very nice blend of the good old 2nd edition Ultramarines paint scheme and the best of the new color schemes. I like it alot. I am not sure if a zenithal highlight is really required when you plan on painting very solid layers over them anyway.
Thank you No, the zenithal isn’t essential for this scheme. It just helps with the camera picking up details in the video. For the bright result it does need a light grey or white primer though
Thanks man I’ve been trying to start with vids for colour schemes I’ve not done a guide on yet. That said, I do enjoy painting Space Wolves, so maybe I could do something a bit cool like Njal Stormcaller? 🤔 Thanks for checking out my channel though
Thanks man. You're not going mad, it does appear I haven't included that step. Really sorry about that. They are painted in using Rhinox Hide by painting a vertical line down the middle of each eye and then tidying back up with the skintone once dry. I am planning a video on just face painting, so I'll be sure to include the step in that one. Thanks for checking out my channel
Hi I have watched several videos and they all have been excellent. I noticed you painted wearing gloves. Is that to protect the finish from oils from your fingers, or is there another reason.
Thank you Yes, the main reason is to prevent oil from my skin getting on the paint and I’ve noticed they make a big difference. They also allow me to test my paint consistence on the back of my hand without me permanently having paint on my hand 🤣
Thank you That’s spooky, I’ve just been looking at the new box of Grey Knights. They look fun to do. The video is likely to be a Sigmar dragon and I have an Ork jet car to paint in the new year, but I think Grey Knights would make a good next chapter to do. 👍🏻
Hi Welcome to the hobby 👍 So, if you’d like a darker finish to your ultramarines, then use a black primer. If you’re wanting a brighter vibrant blue then a pale grey or white primer is better. Of course, if you can find a primer which is the exact shade of blue you’re going for then using that will be the quickest route of them all. Zenithal of light grey over black is great as a best of both worlds. As it will help show where the shadows and highlights need to be. If you keep your layers thin you can even let that pre-shading show though by applying washes over the top More details in this video ruclips.net/video/mADYQQOH9a8/видео.html So, it’s all about choices. My advice would be to do some quick tests to see which result you prefer before committing yourself to one option
Thank you 🤛🏻 The racks are nail polish display racks. I can’t find the exact ones anymore, as I got mine years ago, but these are similar www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0921KQXXN/ref=sspa_mw_detail_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Absolutely, here’s the link bit.ly/3DADjKu It is about 30 paints, so if you’ve already been painting another army you may already have some. The full paint list is in the video description Thanks for checking out my channel 👍🏻
This is what I been looking for but wish I could achieve with my already extensive paint what blue would you recommend as a substitute from gw or army painter
Thanks for watching, really great to hear this has inspired you to get into the hobby. This particular mini was sold separately but I believe it is not available anymore. They do regularly come up on eBay though, so keep an eye out for “Lieutenant Amulius” Hope that helps 👍
Hi Mate, thanks for the video, may i ask a question? What's an equivalent to the Army Painter Blue tone you use on the main armour parts? I have many GW washes just wondering what would be best to keep the vibrant look. Thank you.
So, GW are pretty limited for blue washes. I think the best they have for this is Tyran blue or you could look to use a thinned down contrast instead, something like Talassar blue (although you’d need to experiment a bit to get the dilution level right) Hope that helps, thanks for watching 👍
Thank you, really appreciated 🙏🏻 Really glad you enjoyed it. I would love to post more, but unfortunately making videos takes a surprising amount of time to do and my channel just isn’t big enough to do it fulltime. Please help spread the word about my channel so as my following grows I’ll be able to devote more time to it 👍🏻
Deathguard are something I've been meaning to do for a while. I dont think I have any deathshroud but may have a Lord of Contagion somewhere I can paint up. Nurgle bases would be fun too. Consider it on the list Thanks for checking out my channel
Anyone know how to this kind of blue but yellow? I would like to paint imperial fists, the painting guides online I've found have yellow that are too bright and not quite vibrant enough, almost slightly "greenish". Idrk how to paint, any tips?
How did you get such a smooth coat with the Pro Acryl Blue? I’m following this tutorial for my marines and the blue just seems to come out with a blotchy texture. I feel like I make sure not to go over the same spot twice in one coat, blow dry the model in between coats, and thin my paint, but it still comes out rough.
It’s difficult to know without seeing how you’re applying it but I would suggest trying the process without the blow drying to see if that improves the result. It will obviously take longer but it could be that by accelerating the drying of the paint is making it clump rather than dry evenly. Other than that, I’m not really sure what else it could be. Not shaken enough perhaps? Or could it have split on your palette during the session?
Oh, that was done as part of the basing process. It’s just some pale grey weathering powder drybrushed onto the feet and legs and sealed with some matte varnish
even with a white undercoat, my pro acryl blue doesnt look anywhere near as light as this, im wondering if the video edit has adjusted colours or did you add white into your initial blue base layer? i find i have to mix quite a bit of white in until my blue resembles this
that's odd, as the proacryl blue I used was straight out the bottle and just thinned with some water. My painting lights will make it a little lighter I guess but the final photos are how the end mini looked for me in person. I will check to see if there's any chance they do another blue which could be sold as "blue" too Really sorry about that
For all the pieces I'm painting, I drill a small hole in them with a hand drill and then super glue them to short pieces of paperclip. You can see more of this process in my Preparing Minis for Painting vid ruclips.net/video/KxF8t6k39cE/видео.html

However, as you’re just starting out I appreciate that is a significant investment so my advice would be to look to just get a couple of Series S brushes start and see how you get on.
A size 00 and a size 2 would be my recommendation
Hope that helps
Do love that very clean effect on the marine. Would love to see your kitbashed attempt at a soul drinker, where they are chaos mutated loyalists.
Thank you
Oooo! Not seen Soul Drinkers before, they look great
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Technically they rebelled from the imperium but love the emperor and technically follow Tzeentch without knowing it and have picked up 'emperor gifted' mutations. Like the chapter master has spider legs, another is almost a topless khorn berserker with his hands replaced by chainswords and massive regeneration. Others had tentacles, scales and various other mutations.
Thanks, been looking for a more bright tone comic style scheme for Ultramarines.
Bought the three Monument blues. Hope they give you a kick back for referring me lol.

Excellent video! So glad to see an ultramarine painting video that aimed for that brighter blue result that many of us think of when we think ultramarines. Macragge blue is way too dark in my opinion. I really like they way you do videos too. youre very organized and get really close to the model while going over every step. Thanks!
Really glad you enjoyed it and like the format. 👍🏻
Another great video as always!
Thanks very much for watching
I have been really enjoying watching your videos, and the results are fantastic. How do you pick the colour schemes and know what colours to edge highlight with?
Great video I actually used this exact same recipe for Ultramarine blue on my primaris librarian I did a few weeks ago. The pro acryl colours are great! Could of done with this tutorial would of made things a lot easier!
Great minds hey?
Pro Acryls are really lovely colours. The blue is just so punchy, I love it
Damn that is clean as fuck.
Haha thank you 🤟
That is one of the nicest Space Marine paint schemes I have ever seen. Awesome video. No fluff, all content. I normally have these kind of videos on in the background while I'm painting but I had to stop and watch this one brush down.

@@paulbrickell5660 oh you may need to message me on Insta or Facebook
That’s an amazing paint job, probably one of the cleanest minis I’ve seen. I did notice that the blue seems a little powdery, almost textured. As much as you said you thinned your paints to get a smooth finish I can’t help but see a rough texture to that blue. I don’t see it on the citadel paints though. Is this a property of pro acryl paints? Do you notice it, or is it just me?
Thank you
I know exactly what you mean and it’s only on camera that it’s visible. Even under heavy magnification after then light spray of varnish was applied it all disappeared.
I think it’s more my primer than the paint to be honest, as I get the same with citadel paints.
One of the many draw backs of filming so zoomed in I fear
Great video mate thanks for the pointers

Love the blue, exactly the same colour i am about to paint my blue boys.
The macragge blue is too dark for me i enjoy the brightness and making them pop.
If you could do more marines, especially about doing plasma and swords that would be legit fire.
Hey chieftain did you end up painting your army like this?
Great video. When you do the blue wash do you go back over the model with the original blue paint. Whenever I do a wash it looks streaky and dull. Yours looks really blue and bright. Thanks
Really enjoy the vibrant colors. I prefer my models to be colorful like this, I don't care much for the muted "realistic" faded colors a lot of the other RUclipsrs do.
thank you, so glad you like the brighter colour scheme.
it's not easy to do a unique take on Ultramarines, but I just thought this looked really cool and was inkeeping with their lore as well
It makes for a very cool looking army on the tabletop
REALLY pops
Be great to see your take on Black Templars or Sisters of Battle
Good call on the Sisters of Battle. I have a set which I’m planning on painting soon. Need to decide which scheme to go with first. I’m thinking the white armour would make a good video.
For Templars, I did a picture guide a while back (before I started my RUclips) so that might be useful for you

Really like this, do you think using drakenhof nightshade or Basilicanum Grey as a recess shade would change the look too much?
Thank you
If you’re still using the ProAcryl Blue rhen using a different shade for the recesses shouldn’t change things too much.
I would say though that drakenhof is very strong so I would at least thin it 50;50 with medium first

A very nice blend of the good old 2nd edition Ultramarines paint scheme and the best of the new color schemes. I like it alot.
I am not sure if a zenithal highlight is really required when you plan on painting very solid layers over them anyway.
Thank you
No, the zenithal isn’t essential for this scheme. It just helps with the camera picking up details in the video.
For the bright result it does need a light grey or white primer though
Amazing Video, found your space wolves article and would like if you could do a video demonstration of that if possible :)
Thanks man
I’ve been trying to start with vids for colour schemes I’ve not done a guide on yet.
That said, I do enjoy painting Space Wolves, so maybe I could do something a bit cool like Njal Stormcaller? 🤔

Great video, awesome clean result. Perhaps I’m going mad though, but you don’t show the pupils being painted in?

We March for Macragge! Courage and Honour!
Hi I have watched several videos and they all have been excellent. I noticed you painted wearing gloves. Is that to protect the finish from oils from your fingers, or is there another reason.
Thank you
Yes, the main reason is to prevent oil from my skin getting on the paint and I’ve noticed they make a big difference.
They also allow me to test my paint consistence on the back of my hand without me permanently having paint on my hand 🤣
Looks fantastic love that blue.. could you do a grey knight next pls .
Thank you
That’s spooky, I’ve just been looking at the new box of Grey Knights.
They look fun to do.
The video is likely to be a Sigmar dragon and I have an Ork jet car to paint in the new year, but I think Grey Knights would make a good next chapter to do. 👍🏻
Great video mate, superb. Can I check where you got your paint pot racks? Thanks
Thank you
I got them a few years ago on eBay.
I think you can get similar on Amazon these days.
Search for Nail Polish Display Racks 👍🏻
Is Calgar Blue the GW Color taht fits? Great job btw!
Hello, I'm new to the hobby. Would you recommend to prime my Ultramarines in blue or is black (zenithal) the better way? Thank you in advance.
Hi
Welcome to the hobby 👍
So, if you’d like a darker finish to your ultramarines, then use a black primer.
If you keep your layers thin you can even let that pre-shading show though by applying washes over the top
More details in this video
ruclips.net/video/mADYQQOH9a8/видео.html
So, it’s all about choices.
My advice would be to do some quick tests to see which result you prefer before committing yourself to one option
Glad to see no air brush! Good TT standard.
Freaking awesome brother 👍 Did you make your own paint racks,or did you purchase it somewhere?

Hi Mate, thanks for the video, may i ask a question? What's an equivalent to the Army Painter Blue tone you use on the main armour parts? I have many GW washes just wondering what would be best to keep the vibrant look. Thank you.
So, GW are pretty limited for blue washes. I think the best they have for this is Tyran blue or you could look to use a thinned down contrast instead, something like Talassar blue (although you’d need to experiment a bit to get the dilution level right)
Hope that helps, thanks for watching 👍

Do you know if Blood for the blood god from GW is any good for purity seals?
How tall is the figure?
28mm scale
How did you do the dusty faded effect on the legs?
I will check to see if there's any chance they do another blue which could be sold as "blue" too
Really sorry about that
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides i think i might just have a dodgy blue from them possibly
