I overseed mine every year at a very heavy rate, 30 lbs/1000, and never have any issues with it damaging the Bermuda. As long as you spray the ryegrass out with a herbicide in early spring, it won't hurt anything
What do you use to spray it out? Tribute works but Bermuda still takes a hard hit. Sprayed it out super early this year but after 2 seasons of over seeding with PRG I personally don’t think it’s worth the damage anymore. Glad to hear it is possible for you though! @Steven Banks
@@jacobmata8014 Katana is the best I've used and it's cheaper than Tribute. Negate is a great option as well and is much cheaper than Katana or Tribute.
Well said sir…definitely a personal preference. I’m enjoying the growing challenge during the winter months plus it gives me great pics for clients interested in over seeding in my town.
Completely agree with you, I overseed last November here in east Texas and my Bermuda struggled in the Spring so much it took about 3-4 months to completely recovered, at first I didn’t understand why it was so thin and struggling to get growing but when I went back to my notes to see if maybe I either over applied or under apply something I noticed the one different thing I did to it from the year before was the rye overseed. Full disclaimer: my Bermuda doesn’t look nearly as good as yours but I’m getting better and better at it.
Completely agree w you Rhett! I too appreciate a Lil break from dormant Bermuda. Question, do you string trim ur um mowed area’s? If so, show us a vid how you do this w/out scalping the lawn. I mow my lawn at 3/4@ n constantly run into this eyesore. Thx pards keep up the great vids on ur awesome yard!
I'm the only one on my block with Tifway (everyone else has common), lawn still looking green. I'll never overseed it. The winter gives me a time to clean up and service my equipment for next season.
Great video and great advice. I watched the whole video even though it was tough being from Boston and seeing that hat and shirt 😀 Sorry, still fresh wounds. 😂 Good luck in the World Series. Bring it home for Dusty.
I'm thinking about doing a rye overseed on my church zoysia. I have had some of these same concerns but I REALLY want to mow stripes in that rye all winter 😁
I would love to mow the rye! Probably too much haha I’ve seen a lot of the guys on The Lawn Forum have some beautiful results. Just don’t really go dormant long enough for me to want to do it just yet.
Hi I have bare spots on the side of my house. Very little Bermuda. Do you think it's okay to throw some seed this late in the fall? I'm in the Keller area
No sir. Also, I would try to avoid seed altogether unless you seeded your yard to begin with. Start by eliminating as much shade as possible and then maybe try your luck with a pro plugger.
At this point in the season, wait for the rye to die off in the Texas heat, and try to bring the Bermuda back over the summer months. Rye is beautiful, but it does negatively affect bermudagrass growth.
It's about $70 for a 50 pound bag that only covers about 6,000 square feet, then the labor/time for him to do that... It is silly he wanted to do all that just to MAYBE still be able to mow.
Not as warm early as Texas in nc but it’s hot fast we don’t have a spring so it’s winter to 2 weeks of spring then it’s 90+ with 100% humidity. When it turns hot scalp it the Bermuda comes back just fine. Put out some fertilizer to jump start it and you will have about 2-3 weeks of the transition been doing it for 12 years now no issues. Don’t be afraid like the entire lawn your worked all those summers for will just die from over seeding with rye. It’s just not true. Never seen thinning or anything like that it comes back just fine. 20lbs of rye to 1000sqf and I have 1.67 acres never had an issue. First couple of years I used target6 the new “msma” to fight crabgrass and everything else in the yard now I can spot spray 24D bc I will have a few broadleaf weeds. In my opinion it helps fight the “spring” weeds. Hope this helps someone reading the comments in my area. Oh and the stripes you can get from rye 👌
Taking a break is definitely nice… I’m doing annual rye in my backyard mainly for my little dog. A lot professional sports fields over seed with rye without any issues. I wouldn’t do perennial ryegrass though for the same reasons that you mentioned. Let Go Atlanta!!!
I just cut my yard monday i put some of this exact scotts Bermuda grass cause i live in west texas i watered the grass Tuesday night for about 2 hrs at night yesterday i raked on the bald spots i had and layed seeds with my hand spreader on 5th setting and then watered yard for about 2 hrs after laying seeds untill about 10pm and then it sprinkled light till this morning around 6am now ill water it again tonight or should i do it 3 times a day insted of once a day 2 hrs in the later afternoon around 8pm which would be better thanks for the help as well
Did you dig out your tree rings? I'm considering doing the same and was curious how you did it, if you did. Currently with the typical mountain of mulch and hate it.
LETS GO STROS! I overseeded my Bermuda on Oct. 1. Looks great so far and I’ll spray it out around spring break. Soil temps in East Texas are still around 55-60 in March so the Bermuda doesn’t wake up until April.

Same. Overseeded for 2 seasons but decided it’s not worth the hit Bermuda takes. Winter break should be nice.

I use my rotary scissors. They generally do a nice job not scalping.

Overseeding here in Houston, prg is awesome to mow! Just Throw er down! 😈
What’s up man, when do you recommend throwing down pre-emergent this yr. I’m in Central Texas so I’m using your videos as guide. Thanks man
I’ll probably be putting mine down around Halloween!

My lawn guy put rye in my lawn without my permission to force weekly mowing. What to do now?

1. I like the break 2. It ruins bermuda
No over seed here, I like the break from yard care for a few months. Let's me recharge for next season.
I feel the same way, Tim!
