In Austin I used box store perennial rye and it has never come back which is ok as the Bermuda comes back. You have to be careful on straw it can have persistent/selective herbicide sprayed when growing which stays active when the straw breaks down. The herbicide can stay active for a year or two. Same goes for any manure. A test is before use to start peas or beans in two seperate cups and it they thrive you are good if stunted discard. Test each bag....
Great question and I’m assuming you do not have any Bermuda growing right now, so yes you will want to kill off the rye grass by scalping down to the dirt and sowing Bermuda grass seed in April. Begging your rye scalping however as early as late Feb or early March.
I am in Phoenix AZ and my Bermuda grass is still going strong about 1 1/2" high. No over-seeding with Rye. Should I lower my cut before applying pre-emergent or just keep it at the same height? I have a rotary mower, great irrigation, and can drop it one more notch. I think my lawn will go until Halloween or longer. Great video.
Howdy and I always feel cutting height are a personal preference. But we do know that Bermuda likes to be kept at the 1 inch height. Going into the fall/winter it is a practice to allow the grass to grow a little longer to bring in more photosynthesis and strengthen up before dormancy. Either maintain current or let it grow.
When do you apply weed pre-emergent in this process?
That can range from 4 months prior to overseeding and 60 days after overseeding.

Interesting input and thanks for it.

I'm planning on dethatching, core aeration, and over seeding this weekend. Can I apply pre emergent after seed germinates?
Are you talking about a southern grass type
Or northern? For Prodiamine the label recommendation is 60 days after over seeding to apply.
@@SunCityLawnCare I have Bermuda. I will be applying perennial rye
What do you use to take out the rye? Will your selective herbicide take out fescue ?
I use either Certainty or Katana. Will definitely rid a southern lawn (Bermuda) of any cool season grasses.
