  • Overseeding ryegrass in bermudagrass is a great way to have a green lawn all year long. Commonly referred to as winter rye, this lawn care tip works with perennial ryegrass or annual ryegrass for a great year round lawn. This is how I overseed my bermudagrass lawn.

    What happens if you don’t spray it out? Won’t that just help if the rye survives summer then it’ll be easier to overseed again next fall?

    • @ReelLowDad
      @ReelLowDad  3 года назад +1

      Ryegrass has an allelopathic effect on other plants. It releases biochemical that will interfere with the Bermuda. This has the potential to slow spring green up and prevent the Bermuda from filling back in. You will be left with very thing or even bare areas mid summer when any PRG that didn't die goes dormant.

    I over-seeded with Champion GQ for the first time last fall and it was beautiful. How do you handle fertilization? I think I applied too much because when spring rolled around I discovered a TON of my bermuda got absolutely REKT by spring dead spot. It's finally recovered and filled in for the most part but it took until mid August!

    • @ReelLowDad

    • @ReelLowDad
      @ReelLowDad  3 года назад

      MSM takes at least 2 applications to spray out. That's why I switched to Monument. That finally took out the tye after the two failed MSM applications. Rye is getting tough to kill. As for the fertilizer, I would do one app in late 0ctober and that would be it.

    Will this video apply to Zenith Zoysia as well. Thinking about over seeding my Zoysia with Rye for a green lawn in the off season.

    • @ReelLowDad
      @ReelLowDad  3 года назад

      Yes you can overseed rye into zoysia. I looked at both the labels for MSM Turf and Monument. Neither of them explicitly state Zenith Zoysia. Monument just states it can be used on Zoysia. MSM Turf though states Emerald or Meyer Zoysia. I would lean more towards using monument to spray it out since MSM actually lists varieties. Zoysia is slower to grow out and recover from injury so I would find what your will use to spray it out before committing to an overseed.

    Excellent video. When putting down a final fall fertilizer application for the Bermuda, in Texas it’s typical to do a high potassium treatment. Could I do this right before I scalp and overseed? Or should I skip the potash if over seeding? In the past I would do the high potash along with a pre emergent a few weeks before the Bermuda would go into dormancy. That is when I wasn’t over seeding. This winter I want to have the the grass so I’m trying to make sure I do this right.

    I really enjoyed the video. I normally just spray my Bermuda grass in the winter with glyphosate to kill any weeds prior to green up. I am planning on over-seeding this fall with some chipmate perennial ryegrass. This will be my first time doing this. Im a little nervous after watching this video! My question is can I not just spray my lawn at the beginning of February with glyphosate and be done with it? I just don’t want a bunch of headaches come spring. I don’t mind the brown in the winter but my wife doesn’t like it so I was going to try for a season. Kind of expensive to turn around and kill it in approximately 4 months.

    • @ReelLowDad
      @ReelLowDad  3 года назад

      The Glypho, doesn't kill Bermuda?

    • @brianmitchell535
      @brianmitchell535 Год назад +1

       No. Once the Bermuda grass goes dormant in the winter you can spray and it will kill everything but the Bermuda grass. However, it will kill anything that does not go dormant in the winter time. In the state of Tennessee, it gets pretty cold and usually will drop down to the teens a few times during the winter and maybe single digits once or twice. Just make sure it’s dormant before you spray.
