      how do you feel about mixing the fescue with a different type of grass

    • @GregPhillips.22
      @GregPhillips.22  7 дней назад

      There are folks that have success with seed mixes with rye, blue and fescue. I just prefer a mono stand. There is an advantage of having a fescue/rye mix. The ryegrass stripes up and the tall fescue gives you good fungicide resistance. There are so many different situations you run into "micro" and 'micro" climates in turf you got to find what works for you.

      I actually have a thatch video. The Sun Joe would be great for overseeding however, looking at $200+ for the Sun Joe that at least in most yards you would not use much. The dethatch blade is around $20 and actually does better in my opinion for this application. If you had bluegrass a SunJoe would be worth while tool to have. If the lawn has a ton of weeds, can you still use the clippings to mulch the overseeded lawn after treating with tenacity or is it best to discard those clippings and use added topsoil or peat moss?

    • @GregPhillips.22
      @GregPhillips.22  2 дня назад +1

      Adding topsoil and moss would be ideal but rather pricy. Tenacity has post emergent properties for the weeds it controls but will not harm the seed you put down. So using grass clippings thst may have some weed seed in it would not be that big of deal.

    • @GregPhillips.22
      @GregPhillips.22  13 дней назад +1

      Anthony is my oldest son's name.😀 I am going to do a topdressing video. Couple of things about putting organic matter out as a topdressing. It can cause a layering effect in your soil. You want to topdress with a coarser material than what your soil is. Putting organic matter out without incorporating will cause this layering effect. What happens is the infiltration of water is compromised in your soil which can make rain water runoff rather than infiltrate the soil. Organic matter also has oils and waxes in it that compound the problem. It's why golf courses and sports fields topdress with sand only. It actually takes allot of organic matter to actually increase the soils% of organic matter. So I would topdress with sand only. Also it's a lot cheaper, as you mentioned easier to handle and apply.

      Likely you have a lot of seeds in your soil anyway. Its know as the soils "seed bank". You may get a little germination from summer weeds but mostly they are done for the year. Particularly after the first frost. You can also apply tenacity or Scott's for seed. That will put the kibosh on nearly anything that will germinate other than the seed you put down well until the first light frost.

      I am not 100% sure on that one however. according to the label: "prior to seeding or post seeding of tolerant trufgrass species". ....so I THINK you would be ok. Usually labels are conservative on their recommendations to ensure there is no turf injury when using them....particularly herbicides. I will say I tried pre-soaking a few times years ago with bent grass. It like bluegrass takes 20 days to germinate. I really did not see much difference and I too had no luck in getting the seed to germinate in water. In addition it was a mess to apply with the spreader. Nearly impossible to put out when the seed was moist like that. Think you will be fine. Likely need to do a video on pre-soaking I see it seems to be the latest "thing" on you tube that is not what it is cracked up to be. Soil seed contact is much more important and in my opinion better to get the seed to germinate sooner than what pre-soaking provides.

    Instead of a garden weasel have you ever tried using a scarifier?

    • @GregPhillips.22
      @GregPhillips.22  13 дней назад

      I actually had a Ryan dethatcher from one of the courses I had. I gave it to a young man that was starting landscape company. Did not use it enough to take up the garage space.

      @DamienLeafItToUs 12 дней назад

      Gotcha, did it also have a "Scarifier" attachment? I like to use that to disturb the soil enough in large areas to put seed down. Waayyyy cheaper than an aerator.@@GregPhillips.22

      Aerating when taking a court out is a lot different than scarifying. Aerating gets nutrients, water and oxygen further into the route zone of the plant where scarfing is more of a surface practice. Not a big deal so long as your yard meets your goals.

    U may be a hell of a golf course dude but u really need an editor. The subject is overseeding and u are discussing striping, moss, etc
    Another thing. In the mid Atlantic with clay soil top dressing with sand is a very bad idea unless u planning selling bricks from ur lawn

    • @GregPhillips.22
      @GregPhillips.22  8 дней назад

      Humm ok. Well will tell practically every golf and sports field to stop topdressing their tees and infields with sand. Also let Palmer course design know to change their golf construction specifications and to stop putting 2 inches of sand mix on their tees as well. Thanks letting us know!!! 😀

      @@GregPhillips.22 Golf courses can afford to irrigate constantly. There isn’t a single state agency I. The mid Atlantic or north east that would recommend a residential lawn use sand to level. If there is please include the reference.

    Great video and just because I would consider you a professional I’m going to correct you on two things. It’s Mesotrione. Not Mesotriome. Not sure where you got the M from? And it’s not aeryate it’s aerate pronounced eh-rayt. Two stupid things I know but like I said you been doing this for 35 years and I feel like no one told you the actual names of those two things lol other than that awesome tips!

      😂lemme guess..you are from NY? I had a substitute professor one time in a weed science class in North Carolina State. He felt the need to correct us southern folks on how we say words like "moss" incorrectly and several others. As he went on word after word correcting a classroom of students nearly exclusively from the south about how they mispronounced words. We started looking at one another rolling our eyes some were flat out offended. I was just entertained on is his inability to read the room and how he was apparently very fired up on simple things. It was really entertaining. Our professor came to the next class and apologized. Never saw the substitute on campus again.
      Glad the video helped. Will work on the accent!! 😂😂

    Im in north central indiana and on a tight budget. I have a sunjoe dethatcher/scarifier, some torocity and some sub par seed. Yard is trashed. Mostly weeds and dead spots. Looked good until summer hit. Do you tbink i can start this (what i can do with the equipment i have) now?

    • @jesusjones3014
      @jesusjones3014 14 дней назад +1

      Yup, knock out it. That is what I'm going to do. Greenworks scarifier, Toro cultivator/tiller, 24d and get my seed out asap. Got some 13 13 13 fertilizer half off last week and will throw it out once the seeds have germinated.

    • @GregPhillips.22
      @GregPhillips.22  14 дней назад +2

      Yes sun Joe would do a good job opening up the yard for seed. Really only cost you would have is the seed. I go over where to get seed in my grass selection video if you want to check it out. The triple 13 fertilizer that @biblazer recommended is a inexpensive option. particularly if it is on sale. . ruclips.net/video/f8eDZDvYBhQ/видео.htmlsi=IJ6USpZZnvnid6bY
