This guy knows his stuff about grass. This is the most informative instructional video regarding Ryegrass that I have ever seen. There is a lot more to know about grass varieties and maintaining a very green, presentable, and appealing yard full of grass. I am striving to have a yard like the man that owns this channel.
Rob, it’s was a great lawn year, thanks for your content, I always enjoy your videos and can’t wait to see what the front will look like next season. Best of luck...
Good Work Rob been watching you a few seasons now, always enjoy your videos because you are always willing to try new and different things you don’t just do what everybody else is doing
If you put rye grass for the winter will that help from winter weeds penetrating. Is it another form of an alternative if you don’t want to put down pre emergent. Obviously you’ll have to cut all winter long
I also have a warm season grass (Zoysia) here in Md. I got tired of looking at straw grass during the winter so decided to also apply a perennial rye over the Zoysia this Fall. But now I am confused. The Zoysia specifically calls for one fertilizing application in June. That's all for the year. So if I apply Perennial rye and fertilizer in the Fall what affect will the fertilizer have on the Zoysia since the Zoysia is preparing to go to sleep and I am hitting it with a boost of fertilizer?
You are hitting it with a boost but if it's too cold, it won't do anything to the zoysia. Besides fertilization, you also need appropriate temps. Just need sure to kill off the rye early because depending on the type you have, zoysia tends to green up faster.l in the spring.
Perennial rye looks better because it gives off a dark green look. Doesn't matter if you use annual rye or Perennial rye, you want to kill it before the bermuda or zoysia wake up. You don't want the rye to compete with your warm season grass. Some would say, let the heat kill the rye but experience shows me that the heat will not kill the rye 100%. Also, Perennial rye will come back if not killed off.
I seen you mentioned in an earlier comment that you’re going to scalp the rye and chemically kill it before the Bermuda grass starts growing again. My question to you is, does that mean that you are going to have to reseed with rye again the following winter, or since you’ve applied it, will the roots still be there and just grow on its own once the Bermuda goes dormant?
I will have to reseed again the following winter. Doing this is more of a once and done. There are no roots that will come back. Hope this makes sense.
Amazing how the rye blends right in , Question though , once the rye goes to sleep whats the process ? Scalp the rye and let the Bermuda take over ? Sorry ima complete noob and this will be my first season transition for this home
So, when you say if you used a pre emergent, do you mean, anytime during the warm season, or do you mean, prior to scalping and planting the rye grass?
Depends on the brand and coverage. For example, using a lesco 007 covers you for about 3 months vs using prodiamine 65 wdg at the 6 month rate. If you plan to do winter overseed, you can use a preemergent early during the growing season provided you don't apply late in the season closer to the time you want to lay seed.
@@TheALG thanks! Very helpful, I thought you put the pre emergent down prior to over-seeding for rye grass. So after over seeding, when should the pre emergent be applied?
Hi Rob great content just one thing. That metal plate on your front grass lawn, looks an eyesore I don't know if you've already thought about this, and if you can. A tip and trick have you tried making a square removable tray filled with soil and grass to cover the metal plate and blend in.
Thanks for the tip. I have tried making something like this a few years back. It did not last long because the grass would die after about 1 week. My guess the metal plate got hot and burned the grass on top.
I can look for a patch of fake grass but I hope I can find dark green instead of light green. I dont want to paint it because the grass goes dormant in the winter and will look awkward with brown bermuda and a small green patch. I will for sure look into the synthetic grass. Thanks for the tip.
Currently I have bermuda with a little of st augustine mix. I do have some bare spots. Here in Texas the summer can be in the three digits. If I throw down ryegrass will it grow now and mix with the bermuda and eventually when the rye dies in the summer heat will it leave dead areas or will bermuda fill in?
I could go both ways, it is likely that the rye will die and you will probably still be left with a bare spot. I would focus on getting the bermuda to fill in when it consistently stays warm. The bermuda will start to fill in buy not fully because the rye is taking up the space. Hope this makes sense.
@@TheALG My best bet is to let bermuda fill in like you say but can I seed with rye in the fall so it can be green and hopefully when bermuda comes out of dormancy and the rye dies I will have green grass year round, yes?
Yes and no. While the rye will die, it doesn't die right away. It will take a few days of consistent heat to kill it off. There will be a transition period where the bermuda will start to grow, and the rye will still linger.
It will spread as the rye dies. Sometimes, the rye can stay alive longer than anticipated, just depends on how much shade there is and if you have lots of rain
Very nice, just seeded mine last week. I'm hoping it turns out as nice as this. On another note, the lights which are under the grass, what type of lighting is that? It looks nice.
So, you said NOT to put down any pre emegent if you put down rye? What do you do for the pre emergent then? When to apply? I always get crab grass and was definitely gna put down a pre emergent. But I always put rye down in october!
@@TheALG I been in this house for 9 years now. Put rye down every year. What I never knew about was pre emergent for the weeds. I always just put down Scotts weed n feed. If I put a pre emergent like Lesco after the rye has come up will the p/e kill the rye?
Weed and feed is fine after the rye is established. The preemergent you have to wait at least about 8 weeks. I can be off by a week or two. The main goal is to allow the rye to establish first then you can out down a preemergent.
Honestly, there is not a good answer to this. Cut when you think it needs it and start out high, meaning dont cut too much off. I believe I started my first cut at about day 20
I will start early maybe February and scalp the rye. I will then wait about 2 weeks and if there's still rye left over, I will use the chemical monument or revolver. I will post videos about it when the time comes
They are hard wired into the ground. I had to dig alittle but they are great. I got sick of mowing around my old lights that stick out of the ground. I plan to install the same ones in my backyard in the future and will make a video on it sometime later in the year.
Ah, its a practice some people who have bermuda grass. Bermuda goes green when its warm and goes brown when its cold. Some people don't like the look of a brown lawn, so they overseed it with a cool season ryegrass to have the green look in the winter. Bermuda is so aggressive with its growth come spring, it can recover very quickly.
@TheALG thank you, I just seeded and I didn't know what hight was recommended. It does look nice longer. But I was wondering if you can cut it short like bermudagrass. Happy Thanksgiving my friend!
@@chrisSosa1ryegrass can be cut short if one prefers, but seed density will likely need to be greater in a relative sense in order to have a thicker canopy.
Looks great Rob ! Are you going to using the Honda to cut it ? I am actually looking forward to a winter break from the yard this year. Thanks for the videos
Thank you, I am going to use the ego at first because it is a very light mower. Until I am confident the grass is fully established then I will switch over to the Honda. Usually after 4 mowings, I will switch.

How do you keep Bermuda from backyard from creeping into your front yard
Its separated by the fence. My backyard is pretty isolated from the sides and front.
Maybe I missed it, did you explain. Why the crop rotations?
What do you mean crop rotation?
I'm new to this, what's thr point of seeding Ryegrass into your Bermuda?

It does require work but its mostly for show really. This should only be done to health bermuda only.

3 inches

2.5 to 3 inches
