  • It's time to over seed my Bermuda for winter with Perennial Ryegrass. I promised my wife that if she let me grow Bermuda I would over seed it for the winter with perennial ryegrass so she wouldn't be stuck with a brow yard. So, today is the day to do the winter over seed.

Im in NC , ive done this for the last 3 years, but this time using Perennial ryegrass in a portion of my backyard. Normally use annual ryegrass. Well i started it at the same time as you. 1st of October and ended up with a serious fungus. Our temps started out cool, then humid and a bit warm, and had the timer set to water to often. What remains looks amazing with the Perennial ryegrass, but you can even see foot traffic spreading the fungus and it killed the bermuda underneath too. I reseeded those areas and treated the fungus. Hopefully our false fall has passed but also doesn't get to cold that it won't germinate or establish.

Do you mow higher when the rye starts coming up?

For now I will mow at the lowest setting on my rotary mower, but in a few weeks I will raise the cut on my Reel to 3/4 inch until late spring.

How are you going to handle your preemergent application since you have overseeded

    • @TheLawnShark

I won't do it. Will just have to deal with the poa in the spring.

Nice when will you be planning to spray it out?

Spray out the Perennial in the Spring? I don't. Here in TN it gets hot enough in the Late Spring that it will die out on it's own. Once I lower the height of cut down to 1/2 in for the Bermuda, the Bermuda will take over on it's own. Worked great for me this past year and I will follow the same process this next year.
