When I first get started with trying to get the lawn of my new property into proper shape, the biggest attraction and pro of the ryegrass is its quick germination and ease of establishment. As a newbie to lawn care, I found other grass type a little intimidating, requiring many more days of continuous watering; a task made more complicated by not having in-ground sprinkler system. With the quick germination and establishment, it ryegrass gives beginners like myself the confidence and encouragement necessary to keep on working on the lawn as we can see the result quickly.
I am Virginia Beach and planted your perennial rye grass in mid November. Yes, that was way too late but I wanted to give it a try. There was a couple of frosts during the first week the seed was down and I was afraid nothing would come up. But I was thrilled when I came back in town from thanksgiving vacation and saw a haze of green on my entire front yard. Definitely, a little bit slower to germinate with temps much colder in late November but I had full coverage and even got to mow it before Christmas. Can't wait for it to take off this spring so I can get my reel mower on it. thanks for all your wonderful videos and products.
You're my "lawn guy" as far as youtube goes. I'm in zone 7A and am waiting to put down my ryegrass seed in my back yard garden. I know I know, spring isn't the best time, but it's a new house, and it's full of chickweed and nettles with almost no grass so I have to till all that up and take a chance on the grass seed. It's been so warm here this winter I'm itching to do it now as we are due for another week of temperatures I'm the 50's. I enjoy your videos and am looking forward to trying your seed shortly as I will need more than I currently have.
Hey Ryan, we over seeded our football field(hybrid bermuda) last fall with Perennial ryegrass. Turned out great. Most say kill off the rye but I’m wondering if maybe instead keep the rye, mow it really low, keep it watered of course and see if the bermuda does well with it. Then overseed in the fall. I know the foot traffic will tear up the rye part some but do you feel like if we spoon feed it, keep it low & watered it can withstand Tennessee summer weather?
How’s it going Ryan …. I used your Elite Ryegrass in the fall and it is the darkest green color grass I’ve seen. Really happy with it so far. The big test will be this summer when temperatures reach 100-110 in Fresno Ca.
@@andrewmunoz9642 How did the PRG do in the summer heat? I too just ordered some from Ryan. We live in zone 7a where high summer temps are often 80-95 for 2 to 3 months. Based on everything I am reading, if I keep it watered and use a fungicide, it should do ok. How does this cultivar from Ryan handle the heat in your area ?
I had some Ryegrass mixed in parts of my yard here in Denver, Colorado and a lot of it didnt survive the winter. Winter here was very cold from November onwards and long stretches of dry weather. It didnt seem hardy enough for the full sun zones. The Turf Type Tall Fescue was money though. It did great. KBG does great but it really cant survive the dry and hot summers here if watering is not heavy and with perfect coverage. I have not seen KBG spread well here at all. If even a small 4' section dies off the healthy grass next to it does not creep over. Nothing. Maybe its the drier air and the high elevation.
Great videos Ryan. I followed your lawn renovation and so far so good…I think. I’m also using your Perennial Ryegrass blend. One question will the lawn fill in more, maybe after I start mowing? I’m about 3 weeks past germination. I know this is a bunch type grass.
I put your Perennial Rye Grass mixed with Petes Blue heat KBG. I usually mow at 3" once a week. Do you think I will see issues with Stems and going to seed?.
Get video and can't wait to see you lawn videos!! this year with your new property.I just did a full Reno last fall with your TTTF. I was wondering if it would be a good idea this year to overseed with your TTTF/bluegrass blend or should I just use bluegrass seed? Thanks again
@@ryanknorrlawncare ok I just thought maybe to add bluegrass to thicken the lawn. Do you think if I just overseed it will thicken up? Do I have to overseed every year?
Ryan, I have been asked to put in 5k sf new lawn where a 5 foot high thicket of weeds, poison ivy, and vines stood on Nantucket Island, Mass. The area is cleared, I am bringing in topsoil and I'm ready to plant. For at least the next 5 years it will be full sun. Nantucket is 30 miles into the Atlantic and we are 1/2 mile into the ocean. Not all weed roots removed so we will be fighting weeds back for years. Lowest monthly average low temp 23°F January, highest monthly average high temp 76° July. Pretty humid, lots of a.m. fog, heavy dew. Perennial Rye Grass? Fine fescue? Tall? Suggestions?
How well does this grass hold up to wet soil and high traffic? My lawn is very low laying so when it gets wet the soil stays wet for awhile (no puddles but poor drainage and very close to the water table level) I also have 2 dogs and 2 kids that love to play in the backyard so would this holdup well to that?
Thanks! I'm sticking with tall fescue because I have a lot of shade, need some heat and drought tolerance and don't like mowing my grass short. I'm getting ready for spring here in the Chicago area. When do I need to get a pre emergent down and what can I do if I need to do some spot seeding?
Good morning Ryan, I need help with my lawn. In September I seeded Kentucky Bluegrass and Tall fescue. All was going good until I got Poa Annua weeds. What’s the best advice or products you recommend to get rid of these weeds?
Looks very good. I love the stripes. I live in Northern Kentucky. We have summers that range from eighty and ninety degrees fahrenheit. My front lawn is in direct sunlight most of the day. I am thinking of doing a full lawn renovation. Down to the dirt. I want to put in grass that will be soft to walk on and be awesome for stripes. I also want to have a thick lawn that will choke out weeds and pesty grasses like Crab grass and saw grass. If I have to over seed every year so be it and water it once a day that is fine. I appreciate any help, advise and suggestions. Maybe a video idea. Would be awesome my friend. Keep up the great work. Your lawn is absolutely beautiful. And the striper system that I saw on one of your videos works great on my Honda hrn 216 mower. Thank you for that as well.
I would go with Turf Type Tall Fescue no question. Water heavily once a week if there is no rain and you are good. It grows from seem easily and pretty quickly. If you do your part you will get 90-95% survival through the first winter if you seed in the fall with good weather throughout. You might need to overseed the next season to have thick coverage edge to edge. Weeds wont stand a chance if you use pre-emergent and spot kill broadleaf weeds with 24d in spring as they pop up. It will get thick and green.
Im in Charlotte NC. I am looking for something that is soft like carpet, can stripe easily and as a real dark green look is there anything you recommend that would work year around?
So what wld you recommend for MN with sprinkler system and a zero turn as a mower. Almost all 2.5 acres is sun. We have sandy soil with some areas we brought in black dirt many years ago?
Couple questions about your Swardman…. Have you had any trouble with the reliability? Some report issues with repeat belt and cable problems. Is yours the 18 or 22”? Been really thinking about making the move to
I had to replace one drive cable since I've owned it but no belts at all. My concern now would just be the support since I don't really know who is handling all of that after Reel Rollers is not with Swardman anymore.

Same here... just up the road in Columbus. The warm temps kept the ground from freezing in Jan and wet enough for fungus. Very annoying. Never had this before.
