  • FIRST DRIVE: The all new Crown Signia is here and Toyota has some surprises. On the outside you will discover full LED lighting, 21in wheels and standard AWD. On the inside you will welcomed by a spacious interior, 12.3in infotainment screen and digital gauge cluster. Under the hood is a 2.5L inline-4 pared with an electric motor to produce 240HP. Is the 2025 Toyota Crown Signia a 2-row midsize SUV that is WORTH the price?

The instrument cluster shows a fuel range of 562 miles on a full tank. That is impressive. Price is a little high but I think Toyota knows majority of buyers will be older who will still purchase regardless. The best thing about the Crown is they are built in Japan.

Hi Joe, been waiting for this review. Comparing this to my Venza Limited, there are pluses and minuses to this Crown. Overall, the Crown is an upgraded TOYOTA just like the Venza. Not sure the Signia justifies a 4-5K increase over a fully loaded Venza Limited though. Toyota will sell them because it’s very unique and good looking. When Mazda installs the hybrid system in the CX50 it should be an interesting comparison I think.

Joe I like your consistency about hating black trim on cars. BUT here's a moment to learn a bit about car design, and this Crown Signia is the perfect example: black trim around the wheels, and on the bottom of the doors, gives the impression of ground clearance (and suspension travel). In "some" cases, like on this Crown Signia, it's actually intentional and visually beneficial. And in the case of on a Subaru, for example, the black trim of course has functional benefits of durability, but that's a different thing. I'm just talking visual proportion.
And while yes, matte black plastic often is a cheap-car thing that saves costs and looks crappy, in certain specific cases like this one, it's likely the designer's choice. Squint. Look what the black does - on a car like this Crown Signia, which is fighting hard to be called a "crossover" and not a "station wagon", it's a visual trick. And why they, in this case, uses nicely-finished gloss black and not cheap matte plastic - to give you the black proportion of big wheel wells and extra ground clearance, while still feeling finished and expensive.
An early, similar example is whitewall tires. Look at a car with whitewalls. Squint. It does the exact same thing, visually, as modern-day low profile tires. Great work as always and black wheel trim is still definitely a ZONK on most cars! :-)

Look at a 2014 Toyota matrix and then look at this. It’s crazy to see how far Toyota has come as a brand.

I find this car to be very desirable. I think it makes sense - Toyota drivers are often wealthy boomers, wealthy but don't identify with the flashy Lexus label but wouldn't mind (and can afford) something nicer than their beloved Camry or Prius. And, GM had a lot of success with Oldsmobile and Buick, similarly 'not a Cadillac' for many decades in a different era - Toyota may be figuring out that same subtle market segment this time around.

As somebody whose waiting for the 4Runner, this may be a more affordable option

Same. Almost a better option for me frankly. But do like that the 4Runner comes with the Max engine. Although I do love me a wagon.

I saw that it has an EV mode button. How many miles can you go in EV mode and does it perform any differently?? Love the look of this ride!

I think it has its niche for the vehicle segment. Some of the small things you “zonked” are what keep the lines blurred between Toyota and Lexus.
I’m not a fan of the rubber band feeling in the CVT or e-CVT transmissions - and the reliability concerns. I feel for the price you could also find the features that are “missing” in a Mazda crossover or SUV. Those Mazdas definitely hit higher than their price suggests when it comes to sportiness and premium interior quality feel.
The Crown versus a Lexus? I think the Crown will be $10-15k cheaper than the Lexus. If someone is paying cash that’s up to them. As far as financing goes I’m a big proponent of leasing vehicles. My guess is that you could lease a Lexus for less than the Toyota. Even if it weren’t less the price difference would be so negligible I’d still take the Lexus.
    Great review! 👌🏻

You can kind of see how they integrated some design cues from the Lexus suv, yet they kept most of the Toyota designs (i.e. the back side of the car) - which isn't necessarily bad, but obviously it's not a Lexus product so, I guess that's expected.

Joe, love the fake vents on the new 2025 Toyota Crown Signia because like I've said, it gives it style as to a plain & boring red bumper.
