Because they actually want a king. They don't want freedom! They want brown people in internment camps and women in the kitchen having baby after baby. They see themselves as an empire. They deserve their economy to collapse which will if trump has his way with tariffs and deportation of the cheap labor force. They also deserve tulsi gabbard and kristi noem to hand over all your military secrets to putin. they deserve to be dragooned into putin's wars. which they likely will be. the rest of the world don't deserve it. But only the self induced collapse of the US will have any chance of saving it.
The loud minority does, most of us don't... and since we don't screech at, and try to force our views on, everyone else... the loud, ignorant and easily led minority becomes the stereotype for the USA' culture. Which is utterly embarrassing and infuriating.... I believe solidarity is key, more specifically, class solidarity... if we ever hope to disrupt the status quo of oligarchs running our politics and policy. We have got to get big money and lobby groups outlawed from having any influence over policy. The USA seems to have become the very thing they were running from, at the founding.
@@april6620I thought the same until after the election results. Trump represents the majority unfortunately. Well, they messed around and they’re about to find out. Could’ve had 4 years of relative prosperity, but instead they chose chaos.

As a psychologist, - especially one who works a lot with men - Trump's incredible level of narcissism has been obvious since he won the nomination in 2016. This video asks what does someone do with power. With Trump in 2016, rather than tack to the center and bring people together, he simply went on his vain, egotistical, maniacal crusade in service of himself. This video does a great job of showing us that history has this lesson for us, but also that it's possible to ignore history and to fall into the service of a weak, ignorant despot. So here we go again.

As someone who is a long term student of Taoist and Buddhist philosophy, I have had so many concerns that stoic content creators were just shadow promoters of alt-right philosophy and I am so glad that at the very least your channel has gotten it exactly right. I think this is exactly the conclusion the school of stoicism leads us to.
I believe ted talk RUclips channel did a video on stoicism which basically said that stoicism is a good thing when you balance it right, it's not bad or good but something to talk into moderation

I’m a veteran of the army, a father of four amazing kids, and a patriot. Thank you for sharing this message. It’s unfortunate that Trump will now illustrate this lesson for the poor ignorant souls who bought his misinformation and put him in the seat of power. He won’t remain there, as you predict based on the evidence of history. Perhaps we needed a reminder of what we hold so precious by having a thug try to rip it out of our grasp. Do not lose hope. There are many ways to resist through the law and our collective resources. American democracy isn’t dead quite yet.
As long as people fight back it is not dead. There are many many people and organisations resisting in their own ways. Like planning to flood courts with lawsuits in pro-democracy favourable courts with judges appointed by Clinton, Obama and Biden. Using the power of states against the fed. The exact tactics Republicans used to halt progress when they didn't have power, being used against them.
Vet here as well. Also a fairly rabid right wing dude on more than a few issues. But I had Trump pegged as a con artist early. It's been frustrating to see smart, educated people delude themselves about this guy. Had a buddy of mine - also army buddy. He's a liberal - definately to my left. He also supported Trump over ending overseas wars, because he was a staunch opponent of the Iraq War. Like wtf? I'm a hawk, I believe we need to stand up to our enemies and not be afraid to through our weight around. - but Trump isn't anti-war. He is anti-doing things for good reasons. He'd totally start a war if he saw benefit from it. Which is the problem. This isn't like a debate over if we should force or not. If you voted for Trump because your anti-war, your a fool.
Same here. Not even once. Not in 2016, not in 2020 and not now. There was never a time that he ever sounded the least bit appealing or reasonable to me.
Thank you Ryan, you have no idea how much this video means to me. Especially as a man, so many toxic, disgusting, and shameful men have become pillars of our culture and our government. Men who belittle the weak, who objectify women, and who have nothing but hate in their hearts have gained so much power in our world. Thank you for standing up for what is right even when it’s difficult. You will never be alone in this fight
The way things are right now, it is appreciated to see a man call out the most toxic aspects of "masculinity" for what it really creates. There's a saying that can be summed up as "When you are used to being in power/on top, equality of others can feel like oppression." We are seeing that now. Male supremacy, white supremacy, Christian supremacy, and supremacy of the wealthy have been heavily challenged these past couple of decades and now these people think they have won and they will be able to regain power over all of us once more. It's what they want. But I genuinely believe they will fail. We will all have a rough couple of years, years where we will hopefully learn to truly come together and be in community together without accepting hatred in the process. But by pushing people toward one another that way, because they will be assaulting the basic human rights of the overwhelming majority of the country, they will fail. Trump and everyone around him will fail... just as everyone like them who came before. 💜💜💜
The manosphere/incel flavor isn't true Stoicism. Stoicism emphasizes cosmopolitanism, which means treating the world as part of your community. Stoicism requires admitting when you're wrong and being kind to others when they're wrong. It requires taking care of your fellow man. Stoicism is not compatible with libertarianism. Most importantly, Justice is a core virtue of Stoicism. If you support leaders getting special treatment and escaping justice from the law, you're not a Stoic.
Jordan Peterson busted this myth. Most of the influencers saying trump is a narcissist don't have a background in psychology (including this guy). Or personal experience with trump. Just assumptions
There is a whole book called The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump that was authored in his first term that features a whole bunch of prominent psychologists and psychiatrists detailing his condition. Most name him as a malignant narcissist. As a psychologist I can say basically the entire field sees this in him. I know the hope of that book was to warn people, but the message got lost in all the chaos of that first term.

It's a hard thing to do, especially when he has so much support. Sometimes I feel like Trump's reputation is held together by groupthink alone, and it makes me feel like I'm taking crazy pills (which is exactly what they want, to be fair). Notice that most Trump supporters will never defend his actions on their merits, but by how many others are willing to validate his actions. For example, when Trump does something indefensible and you call it out, their response is often: "Half of the country voted for him, how terrible can he be?" They find strength in their size, and as their numbers grow, so does their ability to otherize and ostracize their critics. And it's very effective, because humans are social creatures. We find it difficult to speak out against the group, and so many join their ranks due to the sheer gravity of their size. Which is exactly why this type of criticism is so necessary. When we remain silent, we allow their influence to grow uncontested. And the more it grows, the easier it is to justify. And the further we drift from our reality & morals.

Hi Ryan, I'm a 17 years old who belongs to India and i just wanna tell you that stoicism philosophy had so much effects on me. I'm better at studies than i just to be. I'm better at relationships, temperament, over thinking and all sorts of things because of both reading about stoicism and 'Bhagawat Geeta' which is the go to holy book that is full of daily required wisdom for us hindus. Bhagawat geeta tells me about the duties and responsibilities i have toward the world and my surroundings and stoicism is like a magfiying glass that keeps the check of my day to day improvement and weaknesses. It has helped me alot to improve, get better, focus on my studies, not wasting time, make something of myself. Can't wait to improve even more and read tons of stoic philosophy. Thanks !!!
I'm glad you're reading books that improve your life, and help you strive to grow and be a better person. For me, back when I was your age, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, was the book that helped me learn to focus on what's important.
You just put an intriguing question in my head. I wonder if the famous Roman stoic philosophers had read the Bhagawat Geeta (I don't know that one) or the Vedas (I know a tiny bit about the Vedas). They must have had access to these texts and there seems to be (I think - but I could be wrong) a great deal of philosophical similarity.

wow, i sure many people didn’t expect it. Most of public figures are afraid to take side in these kind of situations, look like courage and virtue applied in practical life.
I mean, all that aside, someone would need to have some cognitive impairment to not see Trump as a complete narcissist. The reality is those people like him knowing he is a narcissist with no backbone of character, because they themselves lack it, that's just a fact.
What use is courage and virtue if it’s not applied within justice . This video feels more like a narrative than an objective analysis. I agree with some of his points but he is calling out one without calling out the other. Should he not also analyze Harris’s behavior. Is a stoic not meant to make unbiased judgments.
@danishmasih7455 that's just silly, why reference someone else other than Trump for narcissistic behavior? Ok you're right that Trump could be compared to Orban for example. It just looks like you're trying to dilute Trump narcissism by bringing others.
@@ChauvinistTroll I disagree. He is right in calling out trump. But if he is a stoic then he should be calling out Harris as well. That is simply what a stoic ought to do for the sake of justice. The fact is that alot of this criticism can be applied to Harris. One example is that she completely denied any accountability for the border crisis and the 300,000 missing children. She can’t even have her own thoughts without it being planned. Nothing she says is profound because of her constant word salad. It is incompetence at is finest, like Nero. Wouldn’t you rather have a narcissist leader in office who got stuff done, rather than an incompetent leader who on the outside may seem selfless. But aside from my political opinions. We as stoics should be looking at both sides with equal effort as we are rational beings. Not pushing a narrative about only one politician without critiquing the opposition. Also by you saying “you’re trying to dilute trumps narcissism by bringing in others” it seems like you acknowledge that by bringing in the fault of Harris, Trump doesn’t look so bad. This is extreme bias. So what, should we say that we shouldn’t talk about the bad of the other candidates so we can get them to win? Absolutely not. If you are practicing stoicism, please think rationality and with justice.

Way back in the mid 1980’s; sometime before Trump built his first Atlantic City casino, I was at my dentist’s office and was told there would be a long delay, so I read every magazine in sight. One of them had an article which had the title, “New York Real Estate Magnet talks about the future of the Economy.” It was an interview with Donald Trump. I had never heard of Trump. In the interview Trump said absolutely nothing about the economy. It was just Trump bragging about how much money he had already made, how much more money he would make in the future; and of course, how smart Donald Trump rated himself. I remember thinking, “Who is this clown? There must be something wrong with him. He must be deeply insecure to talk this way.” It was a year or two later when I heard about his first casino and read about Trump’s yacht; which he lost in his first bankruptcy, having a bathroom with supposedly solid gold bathroom fixtures. Then I remembered reading the earlier interview with Trump. With all the National Enquirer front pages that Trump and his various wives have been on and then his stupid fake reality TV show, the creep has never been out of the National consciousness for long. The only thing that surprises me is why more people didn’t see what a narcissistic pathological liar Trump really is.

thank you for making this video. i have been repeatedly shocked by media figures playing into or ignoring the obvious delusions and personal incompetence of 45.
Ryan, you are a brave man who tells it like it is. The comparison of Trump to Nero is obvious, but brilliant. If only more of our citizens understood what we have allowed and will endure. Our only hope is that free press and expression persists. Then we can say "This too shall pass.". Thank you.
Thank you for this, Ryan. Much needed in our times. When I first delved into Stoic philosophy over a decade ago, I never expected to face a Nero in my lifetime. I am grateful to have received some degree of inoculation against what is to come.
Nothing in human history hasn't happened to man before, and "Nothing happens to anybody which he is not fitted by nature to bear" -Marcus Aurelius. Thanks for this reminder! We will be fine the next 4 years we just need to control what we can.
There will be damage though, and the country will have to rebuild from a diminished state. It was quite bad at the end of the last term, and the recovery from those four years is still ongoing. Not just the economy, but the loss of confidence in the US abroad(reneging on hard-won deals), the near successful coup that rattled the foundations of US democracy and the open and blatant corruption and nepotism.
I'm coming back to this video after two days because of how important it is to describe the times we are living in. I'm grateful to be able to read a lot of observant and wise comments. I sense in them a distance that we need to see clearly. Strangely there is a tenderness in that distance. Like a look of patient love. Love of reality.
I started reading philosophy since I was 8yo (of course, adapted for the age). I loved my school put emphasis on philosophy and how important is for critical thinking. We all need it.
You saved stoicism for me. Without you i would have assuming stoicism was void of empathy and understanding. I’m heavy into personal development and I’ve found that many people in the communities are overly individualistic and that makes them conservative. In my heart i want to build myself SO THAT i can build my community but I’m finding that many personal development people only want progress for themselves and those who can pull themselves up by their bootstraps.
I'm in that same position. I want to make myself better so I could help others. I work in healthcare and I realize that if you don't take care of yourself, you won't be able to take care of others. The problem I run into is just what you said, I run into too many conservatives. Many of whom still think covid is fake. Meanwhile, I worked the floors when covid was a big threat and had killed so many. I'm hopeful that maybe I'll find more folks like yourself that are true stoics that don't just follow a king/ false god

I'm here for the comments , i still don't understand how Americans love freedom but keep asking for a King
Americans love the freedom to, for the rest of the world it’s freedom from.
I'm American and I thought I understood this country. I clearly don't.

Glad to see Daily Stoic didnt bend to the tate flavor of stoicism
The manosphere/incel flavor isn't true Stoicism. Stoicism emphasizes cosmopolitanism, which means treating the world as part of your community.
Stoicism requires admitting when you're wrong and being kind to others when they're wrong. It requires taking care of your fellow man. Stoicism is not compatible with libertarianism.
Most importantly, Justice is a core virtue of Stoicism. If you support leaders getting special treatment and escaping justice from the law, you're not a Stoic.

For example, when Trump does something indefensible and you call it out, their response is often: "Half of the country voted for him, how terrible can he be?"
They find strength in their size, and as their numbers grow, so does their ability to otherize and ostracize their critics.

Thanks !!!

I have seen little donny as trash for over 40 years. To me he has always represented the "American ideal".
He must be deeply insecure to talk this way.”
It was a year or two later when I heard about his first casino and read about Trump’s yacht; which he lost in his first bankruptcy, having a bathroom with supposedly solid gold bathroom fixtures.

"This is what narcissistic leaders do."
They get up with a minor wound to the ear and scream "fight."
Posed identically to how Hitler did.
No offence. If only that didn't miss.
You mean they get up with a diaper to the ear. Then 3 days later take it off and have ear fully healed
That was ridiculous
And bully someone relentlessly into pushing back and than claiming victimhood for the rest of their lives.
Ryan, I’m impressed. To say what is painfully obvious but, as you know, extremely dangerous shows what the stoics would have called “cojones”
🤣
@@JasminemPolyanthum I love how Trump supporters don't realize just how bad they screwed themselves 😂
@@carissapignatelli That's beautiful I'm glad we exist in a world were people put profits above people.
I want to do something and change that. I'm not sure how to start but I'm in the process of trying to build a community and I may not be able to help everyone but I'm wondering if maybe a community could help each other@@talmadgespicer4201
Thank you for taking a stand. Stoicism is appropriate for this time, and this cause.
One day this video will be looked back upon as providence.
Thank you young man. This video will be watched by my 3 boys tonight❤
Thanks for being a good dad
You are one of the only people to see Trump for what he is.
Never thought you are going to be the one who is still sane after this election.
Thank you
Millions of people see who Trump is. Did you ever hear what his vote share was in New York State in 2016? 5%. His home town knew him from the start.
@@PxThucydides5%? Are you insane?
I have argued in my circle that it’s not his racism, that’s only a byproduct of his Narcissistic personality disorder…brilliant explanation, thanks for sharing. ❤️🖤💚
I reposted on FB. Everyone should listen to this.
Sadly, they won't.
I already respected your philosophy. But to have someone so well read and studied on leadership to give this exposure on his channel, I have to respect you. You’ve earned a supporter, happy to make up for some that you lost.
This is helping me recover from some abusive people that I loved in my life. Many of them just never evolved as human beings because they were know-it-alls. They didn't take responsibility from a lot of their behaviors and false promises. This is so healing for me. Thank you.
❤❤❤
That doesn't sound very stoic of you. Still blaming others.
@@grassCrowBlaming someone because they abuse you is a pretty valid form of blaming. If someone kills your daughter, will you blame her?
Thank you. These comments are amazing as well. You made a huge difference in my life years ago. And again, this has helped shape my thoughts, feelings and reactions for the better. This is truly a great, thoughtful community. I’m grateful.
Thank you for taking a stand, where many bend the knee, thinking only about their wallet.
So many people needs to hear and know this, yet many will refuse to accept. Narcissism in any form is NOT good, especially in our leaders. Thanks for sharing!
The daily stoic has been an incredible part of my life for years and I'm glad to see you taking a stand on this. Like many I've really struggled to comprehend why anyone would support Trump, it led to heated discussions and a lot of people being upset with me. But I never for once doubted that it's important to speak the truth, especially when it becomes something that gets violent people's attention. I only hope that enough of us does what we can to save what we can. For us and those who come after us.
Absolutely brilliant... I shed tears because not enough people listen to wisdom 💙
I’m SO SO HAPPY YOU MADE THIS! I honestly hadn’t watched a video of yours in almost 6 months but this video I ATE UP! WE HAVE TO LOOK AT HISTORY TO KNOW HOW TO NAVIGATE FORWARD! THANK YOU 🙏🏽 YOUR KNOWLEDGE IS A BALM ❤
I appreciate your stoic courage so much in this piece. What passes for virtue, wisdom, and valor these days is a pitiful show of pathetic ignorance. It is absolutely shameful what this country has become.
This is the first daily stoic video I have ever seen and I really enjoyed how you tied these historical philosophers and leaders into our modern day culture. I very much enjoyed how well written and delivered this video is.
Excellent practical explanation and breakdown of narcissism in action.
Having a good teacher does not change your personality. In the case of Nero, you get a malignant narcissist who knows enough philosophy to appear wise.
As the Bible quoted: "Even Satan can quote scripture." Still a narcissist.
Trump's character flaws are so comically obvious, how could he be elected.
Because Democrats played games for 12 years. Bernie Sanders was drawing bigger crowds than Trump in my red state back in 2016. Trump wouldn't have bested him. We didn't get here by accident.
Because theirs are too
@@Drixidamusthe Democrats played a part in it but that doesn't excuse people voting for a guy like trump. There's something wrong with anyone's character that sees that guy as a reasonable alternative to anything
@@AuntieMamiesthe presidential election is not a character contest, it's about who has the best policies to deal with our problems, the reality is the media has done so much pantering to make trump look worse than he actually is, no one cares that he isn't a saint
@@DrixidamusI mean that’s fair to an extent, but I’m surprised no one really care about January 6th. That should have made everything else a moot point.
This is spot on. Thank you.
“Nero may kill me, but he can not harm me”
God bless America. Stand beside her 🇺🇸
This is a story as old as time. It's too bad people will suffer.
Turns out some people who thought they were stoic are completely wrong about that. Great Video!
yea, the author of this video is apparently a grifter
@@grassCrowExplain how you came to this conclusion?
@@grassCrow This doesn't sound like Stoicism to me. Wouldn't a true Stoic address the arguments and assertions rather than attack the person?
@@Louis-ln8wo the video attacks a person
@@grassCrow The key point here is the distinction between addressing a person’s behavior and addressing the person themselves. In the video, the focus is on analyzing Trumps actions and explaining why those behaviors are neither Stoic nor constructive. It critiques the behavior, not the individual behind it. This distinction may be easy to overlook, but it’s crucial to understanding the intent.
Now, let’s look at your comment. You accuse Ryan Holiday of being a grifter. Wouldn’t it be more productive to identify specific behaviors or arguments of his that you find untrue or problematic? Your statement lacks context or evidence, so why should anyone trust it? This is precisely the kind of approach the video critiques-focusing on attacking a person instead of engaging with their ideas or actions.
You are doing a solid job Ryan ! This video needed to be posted. Glad you had the courage to do so.
This is EXACTLY what I needed to hear today! I’ve been working through my emotions about the election and this helped immensely. Thank you, I’m subscribing to your channel now
My cross country road trip has one stop in Texas...Your book store...Thanks for putting this together...I'm going to watch this with my teenage sons
Refreshing to see one of my favorite thinkers exhibit conviction, courage and steadfastness in times like these
"It's impossible to learn that which you think you already know"
I like that one 🙂
Every young person should watch this!
"Like all incompetent overmatched leaders, Nero is unable to do the job." Ah yes.
please just explain why I should have voted for an administration that wants Russia as an enemy and just authorized the use of long range MISSILES! Genuine question guys I need to understand why you have such a strong position on something you haven’t seen play out technically it already did in 2016 but please let’s have a conversation I need to understand
@@delldickerson8766 The short answer is that Trump's Presidency threatens the very fiber of US Democracy. The US is far from perfect, human nature being what it is. But bringing in a crew of billionaires that flout the law and own the judges doesn't bode well for it's freedoms.
Proverbs 29:12 “If a ruler pays attention to liars, all his advisors will be wicked”. When the ruler is the chief liar, we know what will happen.
Don't quote the Bible hypocrite. The book denoces lgtbq and wicked lying rules like kamala and Biden family.
Wow!!
Did you read the rest of the Bible about sin and the sodimites?
@brucesmith8285 Have you read the part of the Bible where god impregnates a 14 year old girl while she slept? Ofc gods children aren't for sale, he wants them for himself.
Thank you for standing your ground stating the obvious. Theyre taking advantage of people who lack proper knowledge nowadays 16:32
Wow I’m surprised to see a stoic channel saying this but honestly thank you
People really are just always people. The same patterns play out, over and over, and we don’t learn, because feelings are more powerful than facts; fear is a much greater force than reason… 😔
What makes me sad is you can lay it all out and there’s still a lot of people (even in my family) that will try to discredit and insult the source instead of seeing him as he is.
Courage. It’s a virtue.
You love to see it.
THIS is why I love history and the lessons it can teach for those who want to learn.
Thank you for posting this, This absolutely needs to be heard

Courage is alive and well! Thank you posting for this video.
There is also the reality that crises happen, and sometimes the only thing even the most capable leaders can do is to manage them and mitigate their impact. But these narcissistic leaders promise simplistic solutions to “fix everything”. But they’re even less capable than the leaders they seek to replace.
Thank you for being courageous enough to explain how this type of leader creates chaos

It’s crazy that I’ve never really made the Trump/Nero connection before, but it makes SO MUCH SENSE.
This is why we must have a country of educated people.
Good luck with that. Most people are like you; they think being informed means watching opinionated RUclips videos.
