Swinging Time-1966-The Supremes, The Marvellettes and Johnny Tillotson

- Here is a very rare 1966 b&w show from Detroit's "Swinging Time" with Robin Seymour. I digitized this from a 1/2" reel to reel video tape. It looks pretty good considering the source. The show was intended to be a special show honoring The Supremes. There is a lot of talking by the original Supremes but the only music is a pre-recorded promo video of them. However, you do get The Marvellettes and Johnny Tillotson.

The Supremes had more than "one" lead singer. RIP Flo. You were always a beautiful and classy lady.
Blondie 🥰🥰
Absolutely love The Marvelettes!Wanda's voice was so unique and their choreography was tight!
"Well I was much smaller than I am now" said Florence Gotta love her she will forever be my favorite Supreme!
You can tell from watching that Flo was very down to earth and regular without any airs about herself. The way she greeted the Marvelettes after their performance was priceless.
Exactly, Flo was just Flo. She was real n we all kno people can't stand it when you're real. They prefer to pretend. Flo was beautiful...
She Greeted Them And Said Hey Girl! Gladys And Florence Were Friends! May They Both Rip
@@safiyaking8452 right on!!--- Flo was a star... I still feel so sad that they pushed her out and I know that Diana and Gordy feel to this day what a wrong they did back then--- It wasn't worth it!!

Rest In Peace Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard and Gladys Horton.
Saw them at the Michigan State Fair and got Flo's autograph!
Give it to me!!! :-)...I would have been kissing all over cute Flo
Julie Marinko well that shows fats where its at lol lucky you
As a little girl, my mom and dad took us to The Michigan State two\ three times a year, and thereby me and my siblings were blessed to see many of the Michigan' Musican 'singers!
You guys had good times back then.
Take a pic of it
The Marvelettes had that huge hit "Don't Mess With Bill" at this time so it is fitting that they too were there. Still a BAAAAAD TO THE BONE CUT TODAY!
Bravo The Marvelettes.
Mary Wilson was always so gorgeous. They all were!
You got that right!!
DetroitLives313 oh yea, love all of them, I’m 70 so I definitely listened my whole life this must really be a rare clip!!! Just love those Marvelettes, right up there, I’ve got they’re album had it for decades Gordy said they weren’t beautiful , what an A- he was and probably still is😝😝😝
@Bobby Wall Yes, this a rare clip. This is show that was a local show to Detroit, Windsor and Toledo. CKLW channel 9. I use to watch it after school. Most of the episodes were lost or destroyed. I am so happy that a few , like this one still exists. Berry Gordy hated giving out praise to the artists.
Yes she was
@@bobbywall172 GORDY WAS AN ASS AND MORE __ BACK THEN... many of us are in our 70's and we remember.... damn shame what Gordy and Ross did back then.. and today.. yu can see in Ross 's face when asked..about certain times with the original and she has such guilt......her marriage to the german man--failure--- her singing-- up to a point popular--but no one is really clamouring for her appearance much.. and her children -- would'nt be in films if it was not for their mothers name .....and that is what Flo wanted to.. but she was robbed and stopped of a career... RIP Flo-- and I know you forgive them.. BUt -- greed is a sad killer and destroyer..
The Marvellettes looked and sounded great especially with Wanda on lead. Superb Talent!!!
Agreed!
@@aadijaa3905 The Marvelettes had an excellence stage presence. They were great dancers as well.
thanks, this is great. I just love Flo. I hope she's resting peacefully she deserves it. Diana couldn't contain herself when Berry came on the set.
Yes I noticed that
You got right she jumped out of her seat all she did was show herself up.
@Christiann Adtkins she practically flew out of her chair.
FLO! FLO! FLO! THE SUPREME LADY OF THEM ALL!!!!! GOD BLESS MY ANGEL. AMEN.
Florence was class, elegance, sweetness and awesome talent!, may she rest in God's Glory!
@greenmean1 Mine too !
We love you Flo! You looked great here...so pretty and relaxed...just the way we like it!
32:30 Flo would say comments that were so funny, and she wasn't trying to be a comedian! She just had a natural gift to make people laugh!
The Supremes introduction i love it and can watch it over and over.
...in 1966 I lived in Detroit and watched this show every day....loved it.!
This was and is a rare treat! Thank You
You can really see the sadness in Florence's eyes.
I agree. Every time I look at Flo’s eyes I can see she was worrying something.
@@nigh_tmoo_d7480 it’s crazy Mary Wilson did say that after Florence was raped she was never the same, the fact that Diana was receiving so much attention didn’t help matters because it led to trust issues. Florence went into a downwhirl spiral

Nice to see the Supremes relaxed, happy, and talking about their Motown times so pleasantly. Loved watching these kids dance too!
WHat a great interview. I never heard FLo talk before.
+amsedelm Me neither I'm over here buggin' out
That's because Motown/Berry Gordy directed all interviewers to his lover, Diane.
thank full that Robyn --((the host)) really liked Flo too...
The Marvelettes look very pretty and polished in the bell bottom outfits. You would think Motown could have at least had Gladys Hortons teeth fixed with all the money that was pouring in. The Supremes look very lovely as ever.
Great Video!
I am a diehard Supremes fan but I love watching the Marvelettes' choreography. It was much more complex than their Motown "sister girl-groups", The VanDellas and the Supremes. The Marvelettes' moves were more complex and intricate. The Supremes' choreography was taught to be subtle, demure and delicate. But Motown choreographer, Cholly Atkins hooked the Marvelettes up letting them go for it and they always killed it! :) The VanDellas choreography was somewhere in between. Love all of them, though.
I'm in total agreement with you about the Marvalettes choreography -- they had the slickest moves on the planet and you can tell they put in the time to perfect their moves. The Vandellas come in 2nd as far as "girl groups" choreography. The Supremes....hmm. Mary, Flo & Cindy's moves were very simple and waaay too suave...and sorry to say it, but Flo didn't seem to be into the moves
Disagree. Wholeheartedly. Supremes had the very best of everything, including choreography. Their execution of the choreography by the two Supremes was flawless perfection. Diana Ross - well, she was a star, star, star and the inspiration for the Temptations hit "The Way You Do the Things You Do."
I Call Them Female Temptations! These Girls Rock!
Me too
@@aintthatsomeshit2920 No the Supremes did not. They did not have the moves and if we talk music The Marvelettes had better music in my opinion. Their music had more depth and soul especially when soul music took over in the mid to late 60's.
Wanda Young's performances could stand toe to toe with Martha Reeves and Diana Ross!
Gladys. First
The Marvelettes were marvellous, and v-e-r-y underrated....!
BGordy was a fool--- to let them go so easily -- and I am sure Diana said some things --((one of the Marvellettes ignored her )) watch!!
@@reealitychick yes I did good for her but DR just didn't get the message did she.
I can see that those classes with Mrs. Maxine Powell really paid off. All the ladies are beautiful & very poised.
Florence was beautiful
Ms. Florence Ballard will always & 4EVeR be my favorite Supremes! i love & miss "FLO" very much!
what I have enjoyed watching some countless number of videos and interviews with the original Supremes is they may have been a "group" but their individual personalities really do come out. This video really is telling. Florence had an awful lot of natural poise. A lovely smile and laugh. Mary was quick to laugh and giggle and Diana was almost to polite, and child like.Perhaps from upbringing and her time at Motown's "finishing" school.
THE SUPREMES.......Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson & Diane Ross.......That's the legacy that has endured and will survived long after the popularity of any of their individual members vanishes!
As usual, Mary's stunning.
Thank you, Thank you for posting this and my thank you is because I love the Marvelettes. The Supremes even look like they have a little jealousy thing (those facial expressions) going on during the Marvelettes' performance. Hail to my favorite female group of all times, the Marvelettes!
One more thing. I had the opportunity to be with the Supremes at various engagements, backstage or at private gatherings, and they always were gracious and kind to everyone. Always beautifully dressed and coiffed too. I never saw them rush anyone; they knew what meeting them meant to their fans. When I think of them in any of the group's configurations I think of class, elegance and intelligence. Likewise, Martha Reeves is an imposing figure by any measure, clearly a top-rank achiever.
Rest In Peace Florence & Mary
First of all they were not only beautiful they were also fabulous! That’s what Barry Gordy should’ve said!
Yeah he played himself
The Marvelettes NEVER had the problems that The Supremes had. They didn’t even have a “lead” singer! And trust and believe, if Katherine had wanted to lead a song, Gladys and Wanda would’ve gladly supported her!!!!
Yes, i'd like to listen her song!
Ah Flo, those eye movements say a-lot w/ Diane is speaking-
The chemistry in this group was like no other.. international sound & stars!
This show is wonderful. The video is amazingly clear. Thank you TheKardboardkid for sharing it with us.
My favourite Johnny Tillotson song! Hello, Enemy! Thank you SO MUCH!
What a treat to see Florence, Mary, and Diane together again! The Supremes will always be Supreme and with films such as these, they will always be together! Thanks for this wonderful upload!

I obsess over this video because The Marvelettes are in it but man, they gelled so well. Gladys was working at 29:42.
They all look fabulous...but MARY....stunning Mary...I am just saying.

R.I.P. Flo and Mary.
Met when they was 14 and 15, then host said "that's 3 years ago". Wow, they look mature for their age.
He was kidding. They were 20-21 at this time.
Wanda Young had a beautiful voice...love her.
THANK YOU for your work on this and sharing this rare video. Lovely to see The Supremes and The Marvelettes....well, simply MARVELOUS!
Thanks for posting this. They were so sexy yet classy. Not like the stars of today!
Florence looks like a queen here......I love this tape.
Amazing to watch. Flo was lovely.
Wow!! They all look good, but FLO!!!! My goodness! She is unbelievable on here! It's something to see HER sitting by the host instead of Diana. Notice how Flo keeps looking over at Diana - especially when the dancers are dancing. It's as if (just a thought) something took place before the show! I kept saying to myself, "Why does Flo keep looking at Diana?!"
very true......its very noticeable
@@prentissbelton7508 i think that u are reading to much into it, they all seem to be there as young ladies enjoying themselves having girl talk and laughing at some of the dancers..
It seemed to me like Flo was "keeping an eye" on Diana, to make sure Diana's ego didn't get outta control.
Thank you SO MUCH for posting this..always liked both the Marvelettes and The Supremes...got to admit I love the "moves" of those MARVELETTES though. I don"t compare Supermes/Martha/Vandelas/Marvelettes because ALL were AMAZING, each for different reasons.

The shade at Diana Ross from everyone was real.
Awww you can tell they just wanted to either get out there and dance WITH the kids, and also , they'd much rather have been performing than just sitting and watching. They were still just young girls when it comes down too it.

+MsTexas73 They definitely looked supremely uncomfortable just having to sit in those chairs and not get up and do something.

Wow I’m like 4 years old when this aired .... but I feel like I lived in this era
19:20, Flo sets the record straight -- "Look, I've never failed in music!" Hahaha! Don't mess with Miss Flo! ...And then it seems the laugh Mary gives afterwards is like she's playing it off, because she knows Flo! That's why she says "Let's not argue about it!"
I loved when she said that. On there trying to make her look like a fool
Wanda Rogers is so damn beautiful! She stood out so much.... maybe it's her Leo sign...

Millions of us guys out here ❤️ her,
I didn't spend much time at home watching TV during these years, so I missed most of these shows - especially after getting my first car! Every night was spent cruising, and listening to the radio! The MoTown sound was the very best, and the female vocalists were always my favorites. I suppose the "production" guys made all these wonderful female vocalists famous, but they sure had the talent to deliver the sound! The really good stuff stands the test of time. And for the record: Mary Wells was totally HOT!
thanks from Australia for the vid, Kardboardkid! We never got this show in Sydney back in the day so it's great to see it now. I love it! Thanks again.
THANK YOU for restoring this clip. I appreciate all the time and effort you put into this!
Los, NYC
Absolutely fantastic . Sent shivers down my spine hearing the girls talk . An important historical document IMHO
The Marvellets had Motown's first number one hit with " Please Mr. Postman". I know that for a fact.
Marvelettes showed everyone that night why they were the best Motown group. So sad they didn't get the attention they deserved. Their steps, voices and songs were so great. Hopefully the new season of Unsung gets to the bottom of this.
Flo always had it going on, swing and sway with Flo. She had such poise and confidence that's what made her stand out from the other 2 even when the cameras weren't on her, everyone was watching for Flo. Now she's the lead singer in Heaven and Gordy or Diana have no control, she's free again!
Yes sad but true God's leader singer in heaven

The Marvelettes Forever
I love them!
Has anyone ever listened to the instrumental versions of these songs. Even without the vocals, the music sounds quite special, because it is. Hail to the real unsung heroes - The Funk Brothers.
I remember reading an article called Remembering Diana Ross's Appalling Behavior at Flo Ballard's Funeral by a writer named Mark Bego, He said that 1976
he was at the funeral, of Florence Ballard and he vividly tells about Diana Ross's sad attempts to upstage Florence Ballard at her own funeral. This is what writer named Mark Bego had to say in his article.
"All of a sudden, in one grand and dramatic motion, Miss Ross catapulted herself into the church, flanked by two burly male bodyguards. She quickly shot through the open doorway, and down the center aisle. She simultaneously appeared, and let out a sobbing scream. She then appeared to swoon to the point of being seconds away from collapsing mid-aisle.
"The two male bodyguards swept her up by the arms and whisked her to the front of the church. Instantly, the entire crowd jumped to its feet and emitted a shocked in-unison gasp. People were climbing, clawing, and hangind Ross.
"I have never seen such a choreographed display of drama in my life. It appeared to be the worst act of mock mourning that I had ever seen. I was awestruck.
"It was Florence's funeral, and Miss Ross acted like she was out to steal the show, in much the same way -- I feel -- she stole The Supremes away from Ballard, and turned the group into 'Diana Ross & The Supremes.'
" 'I could not have dreamed up a crazier scenario than this one if I tried,' I thought to myself. 'In my opinion, that Diana really is an unmitigated bitch! She won't even allow Florence to be the star of her own funeral!' "
"Where Did Our Love Go?" indeed.
I remember reading his account somewhere before. Just another display of someone painting this woman as a villain and making her subhuman to cash in. My guess would be this guy had never been to an African American funeral before in his life either, where the theatrics, real and fake, look the same. Funny, but of the members of Flo's family to speak on her life and death, none of them ever throw darts at Diana for sobbing or nearly collapsing at the funeral. I certainly would have a lot to say about anyone coming to my sibling's funeral and showing out if I thought it was showboating.
WOW!!! it sound like she may have been a little TOUCHED in the head back then. I do believe she was dealing with spirits back then and was unable to control herself.
You must have never lost a loved one before, especially while riddled with guilt.
***** Yep ur right I NEVER HAVE!
That's a blessing! Unfortunately the longer you live you can expect to feel the pain of losing someone eventually. And being touched in the head won't have anything to do with how you react.
My husband was one of the dancers on this show. I wish I could spot him in the crowd.
Flo seems very happy here. She always exuded class, maturity, poise, and class with a bit of sass. Strange that Motown allowed Flo to sit next to the host as they seem to chat quite a bit. By introducing the overblown-dressed Diana last, she ended up in the seat the furthest from the host! Oops!!!
YES..... that was perfect--- Diana was last and needed to be humbled--- and the girls Mary - Flo should never had to stay in the back-- this is a TEAM-- not just Diana..
Beautiful young and talented ladies full of class and elegance. And the young people in the audience well-dressed and mannered.
In 1964, the public fell in Luv with 3 Beautiful Black Girls from Detroit, not 1!
ZODIO right on!!! that is exactly the truth-- 3 beautiful girls--- but it did not last--- when Flo left --- it was a dying group--- slowly-- had Flo and Diana stayed and Mary--- this group would be performing today...
@@reealitychick Just like they fell in love with 3 beautiful girls in ‘61-The Marvelettes!!
@@reealitychick right on
Actually there were 5 Marvelettes in 1961.
Notice how neither Flo and Mary can't look at Diana directly.
Willie--- for sure!!!--- there is no camaraderie --spark- and bonding as there use to be>>> and remember they pushed Flo out the following year....
Willie Mitchell well what I'm seeing is the interviewer is on the opposite side of Diana Ross and so when you are being interviewed why in the world would you be looking away from the person that's interviewing you ? Wouldn't that be disrespectful to turn your back on the interviewer to be looking at Diana who's on opposite end if either of the other girls . What I think is you are reading into this than what it is just an interview plain and simple .
Why would they want to look at that big headed bitch? They were both far prettier than her. She was jealous because flo and Mary had real womens bodies and she had the body of a 12 year old boy
I saw them all look directly at eachother mainly when the songs were playingb

Regarding "Where Did Our Love Go." The song was written for the Supremes but the demo was played for the Marvelettes and they said in their opinion it wasn't material they were suited to (which was true). It was not a matter of them turning the song down. By the way, the Supremes didn't like it any more than the Marvelettes did, until they heard the finished product and saw how the Holland brothers and Mr. Dozier put it all together. And how they used Diana Ross' voice on it.

This is awesome!! Thanks so much for taking the time to put this together!
@waynebrasler- i was thinking the same thing about gladys and wanda getting a chance tio do lead on 2 seperate songs. this must have been disheartening to Florence Ballard. She saw with her own eyes that a group could work with 2 lead singers if given the right material. I consider this post a "NATIONAL TREASURE" @Kardboardkid God Bless you & thanks for posting!
BG tried to conquer and divide most groups of Motown..I heard he tried to do it with The Temps and they didn't bite..That's why they kept more than 1 lead.
DIane could've still been the primary lead but Flo,Mary could've had @ least 1 or 2 songs a piece on a full album, not to leave them out of the limelight! If Flo could've just held in a lil while longer, Diana was getting set to bounce and be solo. Because Supremes went back to original name after Diana left. Now Flo, Mary singing together in heaven R.I P Queens 😪🙏🏽
Thank you for the work you did to convert this material, it's *so* rare to come across domestic recordings that are as old as this - the previous 'age' record I'm aware of is some UK comedy from 1967 onwards (a Tommy Cooper show and other things). Great!
The Marvelettes were the ones who put Motown on the map with "Please Mr. Postman." It's sad that they were thrown to the back of the Motown bus and weren't given the recognition they deserved. Even in the Motown 25 show in the 80s, the Marvelettes were not included in the line up. Check out the documentary "Unsung: The Marvelettes" - very interesting! It's here in RUclips.
