Diana thought she should be in the middle like the lead from The Andrew Sisters Sammy said hell no it is Flo in the middle or you all can go I see after seeing this that Tony was right again
This video makes me like Sammy Davis Jr. even more. He was a smart guy who saw that Flo was really talented and being suppressed under Mo town. He gave Flo her chance to shine and even recognized what type of music allowed her to shine. On a previous show he turned up Flo's mic to allow everyone hear her beautiful voice. Thank you Sammy!
I heard that Florence was his favorite. He said that she reminded him of Pearl Bailey. After Florence was fired and he appeared with "Diana Ross and the Supremes", he lavished his attention on Mary.
Right On Tommy--- Sammy was smart and KNEW .. and that is why DIana s earrings kept falling off-- she was too full of herself in her early years.. and selfish.. The Rat Pack was about being good loyal friends... NOT being a RAT ....and doing in your friends...
This is great! BTW- this was prior to 1967 when sister LaVerne died of cancer...the youngest Andrew sister was nearly 50 years old in 1967 and the Supremes were in their 20s here. Two different styles, AND generations. I think it shows how talented both of these groups were- to do a great job of singing each other's music.
"BTW- this was prior to 1967 when sister LaVerne died of cancer." I suspected as much from the way she was moving around the stage but thanks for confirming my suspicions.
Stop it. the only reason the Supremes made it was because of the lead singer not the background singer. The only think interesting about their harmonies was Diana's voice riding the wave of Flo and Mary's voices...you all hate Diana so much.
Florence front and center. Loved it !!! Didn't see her shine on too many occasions. And the Andrews sisters take on the Supremes hits was priceless and fun !!
I know that Florence had to be fired. He couldn't tolerate that, but he didn't have to blackball her, either. If he couldn't help her, he didn't have to hurt her more than she was hurting herself.
+antij1 Ms. Ballard signed a contract with another label after she left Motown, and she made recordings that are available on You Tube,, so she was hardly blackballed. In interviews after her dismissal, she acknowledged that she did not like all the work involved in building a successful recording career, and she especially disliked the time on the road away from home. She also acknowledged that she failed to show up for some performances, showed up drunk for others and purposely sabotaged the choreography to mess up Ms. Ross and Ms. Wilson. I do not believe Ms. Ballard was blackballed at all, but if others did not want to work with her, it did not have anything to do with Mr. Gordy. She built her own reputation, sadly. It always astonishes me when I read criticism of the members of the group who worked everyday to make them successful, in particular Ms. Ross, whose sound propelled them to international stardom, but no criticism of the member who did the opposite. I love all the Supremes, and do not understand why some insist on speculating about her having a career she did not want. I also do not understand how, after listening to her recordings as a single artist, an objective listener would believe that she had a voice that would have taken her to stardom. She has a nice voice, with occasional problems holding onto pitch, but it is not that different than many other singers -- inside and outside show business, Ms. Ballard does not need an invented career or overblown estimations of her talents. During the initial good years, she and Ms. Ross and Ms. Wilson took the Supremes to the top. They are a part of history and members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That would be more than enough for almost anyone on earth, so I do not understand those who feel that she somehow was denied stardom. She achieved stardom with the most successful female group in music history,
I'm THE Andrews fan...however, my favorite part is that the microphone picked up Florence's voice so well. What a great voice Flo had. Many thanks for posting!
These are the times that people forget about...Both groups enjoying each other...it was not about competition...it was about MUTUAL RESPECT!! Conquering racism, and love of what one does! Remember, African Americans were not on television everyday of the week during this time period. THIS WAS A BIG DEAL. The Andrews Sisters adapted the Supremes songs to theri style and I loved it. The Supremes did the same in reverse. Pure Entertainment!!
This literally was the talk of the nation the next morning. It clearly was a passing of the torch. And a singular moment in show business history and racial harmony.
Th e Andrews sister we're handing the torch they knew these girls were going all the way..my this is a rock and roll moment..they Supremes we're famous but we're on thier way to utter fame
OMG I can't believe I found this. When I was 9 years old in 1964 I first heard the songs by the Supremes on my family's car radio and instantly loved them. My Mom told us kids at the time that they reminded her of the 'The Andrews sisters' of her WWII era, but that they had a great distinct sound. I watched old movies and heard old records of the Andrews Sisters but I don't remember seeing this. Love Florence as the lead singer in this video and always loved Sammy. So wonderful!
Amazing! This proves two things, how fabulous the Motown tracks were no matter the style they are sung in, and secondly how fab the trio of Supremes voices were together. There should have been more opportunity to hear all three ladies. Florence really comes into her own here! :)
That's what I love about the 1960s, the fruits of the Civil Rights movement! They would not have done anything like this on television in previous decades, before the 60s! We were finally coming together, think God!
Two of the greatest (maybe THE two greatest) female singing trios of all time. I know that Sammy Davis. Jr. did a short-lived NBC variety show in 1966, I would think this clip was from that series. This is a priceless television moment, and shows the respect each group had for the other, and the other group's music. Also not surprised that Davis pulled it off; he had a very healthy respect for all kinds of music.
The Supremes sounded incredible. The Andrews Sisters were so on the same wavelength with each other that they sound like one voice singing, you don’t miss a single word or note, ever.
The Supremes should’ve done a record of Andrew sisters songs. They are fantastic with her harmonies. That was a golden opportunity lost, but we have this little bit thanks to Sammy Davis and his show.
You can see it in Diana's face, this one was Florence's moment to shine and shine she did. This is why booking agents at the top venues and supper clubs requested she be present for the performances.
I've never been a fan of the Supremes or I guess I should say... of Diana Ross, but I'm totally blown away! I'd call this the REAL Supremes. I just love how the Andrews Sisters nailed motown! They all should have recorded Birth of the Blues together! What a wonderful clip I had no idea existed.
