A beautiful performance buy a true diva.
@@bharp4390 she lost weight too quickly and had been I'll towards the end of her career with serious chest complaints. She was classed as unreliable when pulling out of concerts but she was very unwell. There's nothing wrong with being heavier but she was known to be pushed by managers to diet to the extreme which was damaging to her whole body but just voice. She'd had pneumonia at one point but was pushed too far. Her voice in casta diva was heavenly wasnt knocking that but very different to the video of her singing carmen. She looked perfect in that. Such an incredible voice and presence ni one could match her.
Interesting on woman's hour today about a new book about maria callas. When I mentioned her weight it was discovered she actually had iodine injected into her thyroid to over act it, so dramatically losing 10st. This was detrimental to her health and although a transformed figure her health suffered due to exhaustion.
I am an opera singer myself, and *the incredible energy and magnificent voice* of Maria Callas has always inspired me so much *She was such a fantastic and unique artist*
Biggest diva of any genre of the 20th century. You can tell that she enjoys what she is doing and appreciates the accolades that she receives from the crowd when the song has ended.
Какой чистоты и силы этот голос! Как виртуозно она им владеет!!! Браво!!! Я давно покорён талантом этой несравненной певицы. Спасибо за возможность увидеть эту приму оперной сцены через многие годы.
Man, the confidence is in the body language, the crossed arms, the facial expressions, the POINTING, the swinging back and forth that you just HAVE to do on those notes, and that’s not even to mention the singing. What a great art form, very glad this came with a video, half of the beauty truly is in the way she grabs the audience so tightly, so confidently, it’s almost alien! You know I don’t mean this as an insult but I personally don’t find her exceptionally attractive, I definitely don't feel the need to focus on her looks at least like so many of these comments are, and I bring that up because a lot of these comments are so focused on either calling her ugly or just fawning over how beautiful she is, and I think that’s a shame because no matter how she looks, she fucking NAILED this, absolutely dominated this performance with the precision and skill of a god damn brain surgeon. Imagine you get out of surgery and instead of thanking the doctor you tell her she’s pretty, it doesn’t make any sense to focus on that.
agree! I personally find her a gorgeous woman, but I'm not here to look at her face, it's her voice I love and wanna hear. everything else is amazing, but superficial.
Callas IS Carmen. too bad she never did the part on an opera stage, but we do have these concert numbers from it, plus the complete recording (which i have, and treasure), and it all sounds very definitive, in terms of the part. always wondered why she didn't do the full version on stage somewhere. Callas IS Carmen. surely, she should have realized this, but... we must respect her reasons, whatever they were. who ever sang it better, or was more temperamentally suited to the part? yes, Rise Stevens did a fine, intelligent job, and was renowned for it, but Callas, Callas!!!
My granddad loved Maria's voice, he kept lots of her records. I guess, after the WWII he found some comfort in this vocal perfection. Next year will be twenty years since he passed away, and I still miss him, in turn finding some comfort in Maria's voice. Thank you, grandpa! Thank you, Maria!
I love how she allowed the band to worship her in the beginning. Her chin was so high. That's an incredibly attractive woman. Confidence is attractive.

There was nothing La Callas couldn't do. A true artist, she embodied each character she played, as we can see in this video. And she didn't bring Carmen into her repertoire until late in her career! This concert is more than 60 years old and still mesmerizing people to this day. She was astounding.
She just stood there, while an expertly trained and practiced symphony PERFECTLY performed one of the most difficult and complex movements in music of all time. Then delivered the textbook example of the vocal movement. Pure class.

The day my mother and grandmother died in a plane crash (I was but in my early teens studying for finals). Maria Callas's version of this song kept playing in a movie that was on in the background. While the memories of this song are bittersweet, I will say Las Callas's voice and stunning physical beauty were the only calming influences on such a dark day. I don't know if there is a heaven, but it almost felt like a voice from beyond. "Love is a gypsy's child that has never known a law."
That is an awful story. Such incidents are rare; but that does not make them less painful. Console yourself with the thought that there are many out there - even here in England - who empathise wtih you.
That's awful.... May I suggest you listen, if you haven't already, to Maria Callas's "La mamma mortal" ( the dead mother), with subtitles, so you can understand the lyrics. It's sad, but uplifting and so, so powerful. I always listen to it when I'm feeling down and it gets a little better.....
Thank you for sharing your story of stunning sadness and the bit of joy you found. Many of us (I) have had similar experiences on the darkest days. I hope you are healed as soon as possible and can walk with joy again.
I've heard this aria performed dozens of times by so many different singers - old, modern style and all that nonsense - no one comes close to Maria's sovereignty of expression, the ease of conveying both atmosphere and emotions. You listen to it and forget the rest - her singing comes out as if she was telling you a story that sounds as down to earth as a vulgar street woman that Carmen was, but that simplicity is so believable that her voice alone brings a whole cinema right into your head. No obsession with breathing, articulation, intonation, piano or forte - she's simply living the character, not acting it, not parroting anyone, not being a mechanical doll reenacting what smart coaches told her to do. She's above it all and serves us the character exactly the way it was designed: juicy, crass, untamed, edgy, expressive, dirtyish, unimbelished woman of her element whose voice is unpolished, throaty and cracking at times - and she makes you believe that despite her gala dress, sparkling jewelry and operatic singing. That's exactly what Maria was in all her characters - genuine and believable and with seemingly the simplest of recipes how to achieve the effect: "if you take the trouble to actually read the notes," you'll see that a composer has conveyed at all there and have you all the clues you will ever need for a given role. She simply red out the notes the way most of us read books. She was the music.
@@franzbi8465 you are really an idiot. This critics completly turn again yourself. You are saying all we musiciens and followers are wrong because she is out of tune. Very funny. Who are you by the way.?
I've started listening to opera realtively recently. I honestly hope opera fans are not the assholes I see commenting on youtibe, and boy there are so many of them. Like the one here who said Callas was a mess and always out of tune. Yes, people love nothing if not listening to bad singers. Just for kicks. But anyway, you'd think someone with such an opinion wouldn't go listening to a clip sung by an affected mess. But they do, just to spew bile, deluding themselves into thinking their opinion would change anybody's mind.
Part of the absolute magic of Maria Callas is that she was always telling a story. She did not embellish a role with any fluff. She sang it straight from the heart, authentically, intelligently, musically. The more I listen to her the better she gets. What a beautiful legacy she left us!
Before she even sung a note, she didn't just stand there and wait in the stereotypical statue pose that most singers wrongfully assume with stoic posture and hands clasped together, like a robot. No, she knew what to do - she got into character of Carmen.
Maria Callas was a unique, superb, multi-talented Opera singer/performer. My father Albert Chassagne & my uncle Marcel Chassagne introduced me to Opera many years ago. She was one of the artist we enjoyed listening to. I loved her interpretation of "Eurydice" God Bless her. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Sad what parents can do to kids… she was not only beautiful but unique.. 💙💙

I'd like to become an opera singer as well! Any advice you'd give someone that's just barely starting their journey? I'm 20 years old and a soprano :)
is it true they used to qualify her voice as ugly?

An aesthetic phenomena --she could be ugly and beautiful all at once--Simply no one today can compare with Callas
She inhabited carmen!
agree! I personally find her a gorgeous woman, but I'm not here to look at her face, it's her voice I love and wanna hear. everything else is amazing, but superficial.
I think she’s fucking gorgeous and her voice enhances the physical and spiritual beauty she exudes.
Shes gorgeous and amazing at what she does, that hairstyle is just garbage lol.
Sometimes she give this really “Carmenish” glare. Makes me feels like she’s the actual Carmen, bravo 👏🏻

My god what an exceptional performance to witness. Her standing for 2 minutes listening to the music and you can clearly see her becoming the character. What a legend ❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️
Nostalgia x siempre
You can see her get into the character of Carmen as the Toreador song plays. She is not just giving a concert, she is embodying the role.
Pure class.
Her face at the beginning…it’s so peaceful and joy , enjoying the music.she’s a great performer forever!

Mamma morta, not mortaL, phone mistake....
Thank you for sharing your story of stunning sadness and the bit of joy you found. Many of us (I) have had similar experiences on the darkest days. I hope you are healed as soon as possible and can walk with joy again.

@Robert Vaughn a greek singer singing in french... hmmm... italians ?
Because they don’t know immortal beauty when they hear it. Don’t worry about it. Be happy you do.
@Misty Uren excuse me. Please do clean your ears.
@@franzbi8465 you are really an idiot. This critics completly turn again yourself. You are saying all we musiciens and followers are wrong because she is out of tune.

I wish that she was still here ... singing live.
