Why, oh Why haven't the MARVELOUS MARVELLETS been inducted into the Hall of Fame?? I don't for the life of me l, can't understand -- what's the "Hold Up"???
The Marvelettes deserve to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as of 35 years ago. I'm also glad that their label mate Mary Wilson fought to get the Truth In Rock bill passed and that bill prevents fake and imposter groups from performing and the bill states that in order for them to perform they have to at least one original member or they have to perform as a Revue or Tribute. If they don't they surviving original members can sue the group, the promoters and venues for booking fake and imposter groups to perform. In 2012 Katherine Adnerson-Schaffner and The estate of Gladys Horton which is run by her son Vaughn who published his mom's memoirs last year. Kat hired 3 talented singers from Detroit to perform with her and they bill themselves as The Marvelettes featuring Original Member Katherine Anderson-Schaffner.
RIP Katherine, It's such a shame how underrated The Marvelettes are. their story is so tragic and i feel for Georgia she wrote them their first hit and didn't even get to enjoy the fruits of her labor
Usually, I don't agree when people say someone is underrated, but in this case, the Marvelettes were definitely not on more peoples' radar, and they delivered to Motown it's first #1 hit in 1961. Nobody else at Motown did that for another two years (Stevie Wonder). And their songs were REALLY good: "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game" is a minor classic in Motown's catalogue. And a classic by itself: sophisticated and jazzy. They were GREAT!
Much respect to the Marvelettes. All those groups in the sixties had to tour too hard, too much, too fast -- and the travel and performing took its toll in many ways. That the music lives on is a tribute to their flexibility and endurance as well as talent, rehearsing & effort. These songs aren't "oldies" but CLASSICS. To turn on AM radio and hear a Marvelettes hit meant instant happiness.
I remember grooving to the Marvellettes word for word as a little girl, the youngest of five, hearing these songs played by my teen sisters in the 60s.
I moved to Las Vegas in about 2002. When I saw marquees with The Marvelettes, The Platters, and The Coasters, I almost exploded! All HUGE favorites of mine! But when I found that there were almost no original members, I just lost my enthusiasm to see them. Little Anthony and The Imperials were still together, and played Vegas now and then, sounding JUST like they did as teenagers. Ditto The Tokens. What a high! ! ! Gene Pitney, Neil Sedaka, Lesley Gore, Peggy March, Darlene Love... I loved living here. I didn't know much about The Marvelettes' story, and finding out about how it all went down, I'm glad I didn't go to any of the 'tribute' shows.
Thank u Mary Wilson ( RIP ) FOR going to congress about " promotion of the original singers" with u can't be a Marvelestt of a Supreme or a SHIRELL without the singers in the original group thx u RIP Mary Wilson u did. Bless all the original groups from the 60's and 70's.
I wasn’t born until the 70s but this is probably my fav Motown group besides the Jacksons and the temps.. awesome music. Don’t mess with bill and magician grabbed my attention.
Wonderful presentation. I was in elementary and junior high school. Enjoying the Marvellets growing up in Northern California. Trying to sing the songs they master 🙏🏾🙌🏾🫶🏾
DON'T MESS WITH BILL - I was with my babysitters dog, as a child in Detroit, playing with a dog named Bill. "Don't Mess With BILL!!!" I used to hug that pretty black dog and sing that song! Oh, what a childhood memory!
There is a bit of a fiction here. They said that African-American artists did not appear on record sleeves at the time Mr. Postman was released - but the Supremes were on their cover and they were released 5 months earlier. Besides there had been plenty of African-American artists on album covers long before that. These include Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, Harry Belafonte, Louis Armstrong, Della Reese, Sarah Vaughan, Nat King Cole , Duke Ellington and even Little Richard. Plus many more. Why Motown chose not to feature The Marvelettes on their debut album is perhaps only known to Berry Gordy...but it's definitely not the reason given here.
@@Aubreyelise2015 I just named you a whole load of AA women who were on their own record sleeves long before Mr Postman - including other Motown artists.
I remember the MARVELETTES performing in Cleveland, Ohio at a nightclub called the MUSIC BOX at 10616 Euclid Ave. I had the priviledge of playing behind them. They were the best. They should have been in the Rock Hall of Fame before any of these people that they are nominating these days what a trip. How much does it cost to get them in? Everything has a price.
Lucky you! I was born in 1966 so I didn't know anything about them until I bought a VHS called Girl Groups The Story Of A Sound. They didn't interview any of the ladies, but in England there was a Tribute Show to the Carpenters, and a girl group called the saturdays did their version of please mr. postman but someone forgat. They were next to TLC the most haunted and cursed group in music.
