Actually, I think the male interviewer was kind of sweet on Florence. Back in those days, when a guy LIKED a girl, he would gently tease her about something, to get her attention. You'll notice the guy asked Florence to move in closer, then as the interview progressed, he began looking directly at Florence while asking questions. Flo seemed a bit startled and unprepared for that, and notice Diana began looking a bit put out and irritated. He had a big crush on Flo, I think, and judging by their looks, both Diana and Florence realized it.
Wow I can’t imagine what the internet would do to this man for comparing the girls weight on television if this happened today!! If Florence is considered “fat” than I must be morbidly obese😂
You probably are. Most black women are so dilusional about their weight that it is shameful.Florence has the perfect body a little gym weight and she should have been able to write her own ticket. That woman was a looker!
RIP the two members of The Supremes Florence Ballard (June 30, 1943 - February 22, 1976), aged 32 Mary Wilson (March 6, 1944 - February 8, 2021), aged 76 You will be remembered as legends.
RIP Mary, taken so suddenly and so soon. Reunited with Florence again after 45 years. Together in heaven teaching the angels how to sing like a Supreme 🌷🙏🌷
Thanks for posting this. This is an excellent interview - not because of the interviewer - but because it reveals the three girls' distinct personalities. It's how many of us remember them from back then, especially if you saw them live. One good thing about this interview occurs when he actually asks musical questions - about harmony and unison, etc., which Mary offers a good answer to.
Young, beautiful, and classy. So polite. Coached well for media. All a lost art today. I wasn't born during this time but I appreciate this lightening in a bottle
This is great, a natural interview with The Supremes. Also the weight comments would not be allowed today on TV today, Florence replys with a funny and accepting answer. LOL
Flo would be considered skinny nowadays! I think she looks just fine. I saw Mary's gown collection, when she brought them to Seattle, and I couldn't believe how small those gowns were for all three of them. Even the gowns that Cindy wore were small, even though she didn't look like a stick on TV. TV really did add a lot of weight back in the 1960's
Exactly! Florence is slim. Not fat at all. And Mary was tiny! She couldn't have been more than a size 4. Diana as we all know was very thin. Almost anyone would look bigger next to her but they all looked fantastic if you ask me.
Really want to thank you for uploading this video! There isn't any proper interview videos of the ORIGINAL Supremes on here! So thank you love! I felt really sorry for Florence watching this, she seemed very quiet, I guess everything was taking a turn for the worst here :'(
Yes I agree. Florence hung in there in this interview but seems she was going through a lot then but I love watching her because she's so interesting to see. She was more like the girl next door type and that's something the boss wanted to change about her and couldn't.
The interviewer is typical of the 1960's in both style and substance. Florence, Mary and Diana are not girls. They are women. Florence Ballard is the most interesting of the three you can tell she has a powerful testimony but for whatever the reason is keeping a lid on it.
The interviewer asks Mary and Flo what's your exuse?" Like as if you needed some excuse to be at a normal weight and not underweight like Diana. The interviewer has a lot of nerve.
You really do live in a different world to 1966. He was being humorous, and the girls understood that. Taking offence at everything hadn't been invented at this time, thank goodness.
Hmmm. If it was so harmless and cute and humerous why did Barry Gordy constantly call Florence fat, and have his constant insults at her weight worked into scripted banter on stage and in interviews, to the point she ended up on dangerous diet pills to get him off her back, health medication that has been proven cause significant damage to the heart, and Florence died at 32 of a heart attack? So you're saying Florence was oversensitive and she should have learned to take the constant insults about her weight with humour? Should she also have realised that Gordy was only joking when he constantly called her a drunk and a high school dropout, as well as fat? I guess it was a different time, my goodness.
I remember all the stories year in year out, my mom use to share with me about, the Motown greats she grew up with, to this day, it never gets old. Motown could, have marketed Flo solo career if, they really wanted too. The woman could, sing, she had a somewhat, of a soft earth tone voice, could carry a melody, had range, style, & class. She always, seem to stand out yet low-key, within the group, most definitely she was underrated as a singer, and didn't get her due recognition. She seem to be an old soul, and a home body, absolutely family, wife & mother material. The interviewer was disrespectful towards, her concerning her weight. You could, tell it made her feel uncomfortable, but she handled herself with humour & class. Her body type is voluptuous, I would say hourglass shape, the idiot interviewer is judging her, by the white man's standard of what a woman's weight should, be. Oh foolish white man, your standards need not applied here, Flo was a natural beauty, looking like a snack, & diana, boney as my butt crack! Lol. I'm out!
I agree she look like a woman like my mother said she look like a woman one of Flo's interview she said very Gordon called her fat she's only a size 11 that's not fat and there are women out there doing some certain exercise and diet where they can add a butt to them, I told my mother that's how white men are they like the thinner the better that's why the majority of white women when you hear them saying they're dying of anorexia is because that's what white men like Very sad you supposed to go by who the person is
I read that an offer was made to her for solo albums after she was released from the Supremes. Unfortunately, Florence did not have an entertainment attorney to negotiate it for her. If she had, she probably would have gotten better money and more perks that could have benefited her long-range career. Unfortunately, he handled the first one by herself (big mistake) and when finally did get an attorney to renegotiate, he turned out to be a crook who stole her settlement (even bigger mistake).
That interviewer has some nerve asking Florence about her weight, when he's fatter then all three of them combined. He could eat all three of them and still have room for Cindy Birdsong. However it is worth noting that at this point in the Supreme's history, Gordy was doing everything he could to attack Florence's self esteem to make it easier to force her out of the group, and one of his favourite topics when he wanted to deliberately upset her was to constantly call her fat: he had "Florence is so fat" jokes and remarks constantly worked into scripted stage and interview banter, so I would not be suprised if the interviewer was told to say this by Gordy.
Thank you SO MUCH for uploading this! It's great to see all three of them in an interview holding their own. I know he didn't mean to be, but the interviewer came off a bit rude to Florence.
He did when he asked something that boiled down to "and why are YOU so big, compared to Diana?" but I think he realized this and was rather solicitous to Florence after that weird question.
Don Hawkins I never said that asking her to move closer was rude. His jokes about her difference in weight was somewhat rude. You must've commented before watching the whole interview. Be more mindful next time.
Thank you for the video! At first I was excited to get a sense of their true personalities and chemistry together. But after just hearing interviews in which she talked about being pressured about her weight by Berry Gordy, I feel outraged that Florence endured it publicly, as well. Thin, fat, and in between, we are all women, and human beings. Respect us! Furthermore, she was the Queen Supreme, body and all.
FAT, MY ASS!!! It's called a FIGURE. Mary and Miss Ross couldn't touch Flo if their life depended on it. She wasn't meant to be skinny. She stated this many times. Her mom and sisters were full figured women too.
Indeed, she was't even "full-figured" in the euphemistic way that the phrase is used now. (Another one is "bigger" - bigger than WHAT?) I'd say "well-padded, but without the pads". Anyway, compared to Diane Ross, ANYBODY would be considered well-rounded. Miss Ross and Nancy Reagan - shaped like stop signs! (It is a wonder neither of them broke her neck trying to hold her head up.)
You out of your mind!!! A MAN??? Florence was a hottie and something we guys loved looking at with her figure and stage manner. Diana is overworked, skinny, and her voice was overworked as well. She looks tired in this interview as she has on none of her lashes.
Vincent50 Although I think Florence was nice to look at and I'm a woman there's nothing wrong with Diana. Being skinny isn't the problem its when you look sickly but its not the same thing as being 'regular' skinny. Diana filled out as she got older. While Flo had the fuller figure you have to be more mindful of what you eat because those body types tend to gain weight easily. Pregnancy is another thing because most women gain weight as well. In a way its good Diana started out slim and filled out later on as opposed to being curvy and being much heavier. It really boils down to genetics but I don't like body shaming. I think Diana said in an interview that she was stressed and overworked so she wasn't eating as much.
Thank you; these folks, flying off, all half-cocked thinking of $100 in 2018 dollars. The Motown deals were pretty much STANDARD with unproven acts: Low royalties; one year contracts with the company owning the option for SIX-MORE YEARS. This was their ALLOWANCE, so that they would actually HAVE a little money at the end of their run.Standard.
The guy doing the interview is a real jerk. He gets way too personal asking questions that are really none of his business. He should have focused on the music....just sayin'
That's how some did interviews back then. I saw a Jackson 5 interview from back in the 70's with a very instrusive interviewer who asked them how much money they made, etc. As well. I think it's very tacky as well.
This interview is one of the reasons the 60s were so nice to live through. Everyone was so kind and elegant. You certainly won't find interviewers talking to people outside at lunch these days, everyone is so rushed. Thank you for posting it Oh, love Diana's hair in this interview. Would you happen to know if this hairstyle has a name? It's like the beauty shop to copy it the next time I go in.
They were rushed then, too. I read "Call Her Miss Ross" and there were stories about how they got rushed from city to city. They never even got to see most of the places they visited unless it was for publicity. But most times they would fly into a city and get shoved from radio station to radio station to do interviews. This one looks like a relaxing lunch by the pool. But it only lasted 11:27 and all I see are drinks. They probably had to get up and run to another one or a rehearsal or a sound check a few minutes later. Motown DEFINITELY worked them back in the day.
Extremely talented women. I always admired their class. I was a young boy back then but I knew something about the Supremes was just that-supreme. Their songs were and always will be a big part of my life. Sorry they had to endure interviews like this. They brought so much joy to so many people. I feel fortunate to have been able to live in a time when they were making music. I miss those days!!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO---- ---== notice at the very beginning when the interviewer asked all the girls how they felt about the great standing ovation they got from the audience..and Diana started with her I__I__I-- all about how SHE felt-- that the interviewer cut her off -- and led into another question and statement-- (( they were all aware of her ego)) SMH.. he asked about how they ALL felt -- not just her..
Honestly, I’d really admire how Florence’s responding to that rude interviewer, she really owned him and that old yt man shouldn’t even be bothered to ask out that. I honestly admire how honest and unbothered she basically is and she’s so sassy and “WE” “WE” stan a black woman who stands up for herself instead of being trashed. We’d knew to always appreciate Motown and Slo-Funk, We’d basically need more women who are sassy, strong and “UNBOTHERED”. Thank you so much Dad for introducing me to this genre of music and the 60s decade
No, we don’t need more sassy women. We need more women who know how to carry themselves and behave like a lady. Florence ultimately couldn’t do that, and it was her downfall.
This is by far the BEST interview I've seen by the Supremes. How rude of the interviewer to ask them how much money they are getting paid. Also, has anyone noticed that Florence's speaking voice is deeper than Diane's? PS I'm so glad Florence took her hat off, so we could see her face!
Over the years as I started to hear Florence's voice, its strong and heavier than Mary's and Diana's. That's why had she had proper writers Florence could've been one heck of a solo artist. She had the gift of a strong voice just a wrong direction she was pushed into. ABC records was trying to make her a Diana singer and that she was not.
Let the truth be known about their money! Diane said they were just happy to be there and performing, not just for the money!! Blah blah, you want to get PAID!! CHA CHING

Wow! What a rarity! Sadly, I never got to see the original group. However, I did see "Diana Ross & The Supremes," at EXPO '67 in Montreal, when Florence had just been replaced by Cindy Birdsong. Their huge hit that summer was "Reflections" and their performance was something I'll never forget. Thank you SO much for posting this uber rare clip. It is greatly appreciated!
Their compensation, a measly $100 a week, was characterized as an "allowance," as if they were little kids. It showed the reign Daddy Gordy had on his girls. You can bet the Beatles didn't receive "allowances" from Capitol Records in the 60's.
Motown Records in 1965, was independent, the only black owned record company in history. In this era of segregation and Jim Crow, Motown didn't have the money that Capitol Records had! (A white company). There were radio stations that didn't play early Motown songs....all he could pay the group members was 100.00 a week! Beatles? I remember their first hit songs (1964) were on Vee Jay, a black label. The songs success was to be a windfall for the company! Suddenly they were recording on Capitol! Racism reared its ugly head....yeah, I bet the Beatles WEREN'T getting an "an allowance of 100.00 a week"!
@@michellekirkendall818 I admit that the black record labels didn't have the revenue that white labels did, but nah, Gordy could have done better with the Supremes and other Motown acts. You can bet your life that he wasn't living modestly at that time.

Agreed-- just listen to the few songs that she sang lead (Mary, too). WOW! Ross probably felt threatened, and since she was sleeping with the boss . . .
Mary was the best looking.
@@@vendusa58 . Stupid ass. It wasn't Diana's ultimatum to be the lead singer
@@blogshagify Of course it was. Whatever Diane wanted and she wanted everything. All she had to do was tell Berry and he did it for her. Wake up and smell the coffee. Berry had to do everything for Diane and if he didn't he could not fu^^ her. She was a selfish Mo#### Fu####. Take the Diane blindfolds off Terrell CF??????
Actually, I think the male interviewer was kind of sweet on Florence. Back in those days, when a guy LIKED a girl, he would gently tease her about something, to get her attention. You'll notice the guy asked Florence to move in closer, then as the interview progressed, he began looking directly at Florence while asking questions. Flo seemed a bit startled and unprepared for that, and notice Diana began looking a bit put out and irritated. He had a big crush on Flo, I think, and judging by their looks, both Diana and Florence realized it.
Florence was just as beautiful and gorgeous as Mary was. Good looks, class and dignified.
The supremes are immensely beautiful!
Tuesday, June 21, 1966. THANK YOU for sharing this!
1966.not.1967
Wow I can’t imagine what the internet would do to this man for comparing the girls weight on television if this happened today!! If Florence is considered “fat” than I must be morbidly obese😂
Andrew R. She was not fat, the host was a royal ass.
You probably are. Most black women are so dilusional about their weight that it is shameful.Florence has the perfect body a little gym weight and she should have been able to write her own ticket. That woman was a looker!
RIGHT!!!!
In those days it was kinda ok to talk about these things no one really care
Great interview... so many forget that they were trailblazers. They were new to the world and the world was new to them.
A totally different time. That interviewer would probably get cussed out asking some of those questions today.
Ofcourse it was it was ok to ask such disgusting questions
Rare! Nice to see Florence Ballard. She was wearing that hat.
RIP the two members of The Supremes
Florence Ballard (June 30, 1943 - February 22, 1976), aged 32
Mary Wilson (March 6, 1944 - February 8, 2021), aged 76
You will be remembered as legends.
I love Florence's voice and sass (:
"Florence is that why she's thinner than u cause she works harder" That interviewer had some damn nerve 🤨
It was a joke.
@@MiamiPush2theLimit But it was kind of demeaning.
@@moni1952 it was sarcasm. Diana was a rail. It was astonishing to see, even in those days before obesity became the norm.
Mary Wilson, The Sexy One, R.I.P. ,cause HONEY, YOU was terrific!!!! Great upload..... The Supremes,,,!!!!
Flo looked so sophisticated, especially with the hat on
I said the same thing.
Flo was FINE!!! Sad about the fate she met, but life just isn't fair.
Ms. Flo is so real and beautiful just adore her energy ❤️
I'm here for Florence Ballard!
This is gold. Thanks for sharing.
RIP Mary, taken so suddenly and so soon. Reunited with Florence again after 45 years. Together in heaven teaching the angels how to sing like a Supreme 🌷🙏🌷
It was GREAT to see this rare interview.......hard to believe Florence stop singing with the Supremes fifty years ago ....1967.
I love the SUPREMES :)
What a treat, thank you for sharing!
Loved them when I was a kid in 1980s though this was the 60s. Love it
Young, beautiful, and classy. So polite. Coached well for media. All a lost art today. I wasn't born during this time but I appreciate this lightening in a bottle
This is great, a natural interview with The Supremes. Also the weight comments would not be allowed today on TV today, Florence replys with a funny and accepting answer. LOL
This was a great interview . Glad I was able to see this .All three of these ladies are terrific .
TV really did add a lot of weight back in the 1960's
swtv1754 exactly!
Exactly! Florence is slim. Not fat at all. And Mary was tiny! She couldn't have been more than a size 4. Diana as we all know was very thin. Almost anyone would look bigger next to her but they all looked fantastic if you ask me.
Ok
HOW?!?! And WHERE?!?? 😂
Please stop. She was overweight
She looks my size, and I am a 1 (sometimes 0) in jeans. Little lol.
Florence looks good love her voice
wow. thank you for sharing this. what a piece of history in the making!
Flo was so beautiful and had the best voice of the supremes
Florence is the most spontaneous and natural one.
..... one of the reasons they wanted her out
The interviewer asks Mary and Flo what's your exuse?" Like as if you needed some excuse to be at a normal weight and not underweight like Diana. The interviewer has a lot of nerve.
I KNOW , WHAT WAS UP WITH THAT , AND THEY ONLY GET 50.00 A WEEK . BERRY GORDY , YOU CROOK GIVE ME A BREAK MAN
It shows how much restraint and poise all three girls had for not slapping that cheeky gobshite for asking that question
I guess it was a different time, my goodness.
they are skinny by current American standards lol
Lol. I'm out!
Eric Echols correct! That. Interviewer was a bucket belly beaver .
@@Princess-gy5kx 😀😅🤣😂😆🤗 lol
I agree she look like a woman like my mother said she look like a woman
one of Flo's interview she said very Gordon called her fat she's only a size 11 that's not fat
and there are women out there doing some certain exercise and diet where they can add a butt to them, I told my mother that's how white men are they like the thinner the better that's why the majority of white women when you hear them saying they're dying of anorexia is because that's what white men like
Very sad you supposed to go by who the person is
I read that an offer was made to her for solo albums after she was released from the Supremes.
Flo was tall around 5 feet 8 her weigh was the
Her weight was right for her height
Æ
“And still have room for Cindy Birdsong” LOL I’M DECEASED
Gordy was a asshole.
Fantastic video. The musical history of it all is amazing. Thank you for this awesome post.
Thank you SO MUCH for uploading this!
It's great to see all three of them in an interview holding their own.
I know he didn't mean to be, but the interviewer came off a bit rude to Florence.
You´re welcome! Thank you for watching!
Rude? Asking her to move closer to the microphone? Come now, he was very respectful...lovely interview.
I thought he may have asked Florence the question because she has such a great figure. Curves don't lie! That's just my interpretation.
Loved the way they are calling it rhythm and blues / rock n roll
I like when asked where they the ones they put Motown on the map Diana quickly said that there are many artists that helped not just them
Thank you for the video!
Take your broccoli and beef and stick up your skinny skanky ass!!!!
Good answer. Florence wasn't fat at all.
Great interview... thanks for sharing.
Florence was stacked, truly beautiful.
No one can speak but Diana? Damn!
Cora Hudson ugly frog 🐸 eyes wig bigger than her whole dam body too 🤣😂😅,
So beautiful, love Florence n miss her. RIP.
Florence was such a beautiful and fine woman. I call her my twin idol.
$100 a week when they were making millions for Motown, gee Berry Gordy got so rich off them, that's insane!
Eddy Yessss HE DID!! THE DOG WORLD....MUSIC INDUSTRY.....😞
$100 back in 1966 is worth $761 in 2018.
AMEN BERRY WAS A CROOK, AND VERY GREEDY I THINK WOW THE HELL WITH THAT
Thank you; these folks, flying off, all half-cocked thinking of $100 in 2018 dollars. The Motown deals were pretty much STANDARD with unproven acts: Low royalties; one year contracts with the company owning the option for SIX-MORE YEARS. This was their ALLOWANCE, so that they would actually HAVE a little money at the end of their run.Standard.
Yeah, it just goes to show that for being his favourite, mr Gordon wasn't that nice to Diana either
Flo was a full on Diva sitting so elegantly with that hat on at the beginning😫🤣
Faith Evans resembles Florence Ballard.
Florence had a beautiful voice which made a huge contribution to the Supremes sound.
Pure magic. Thank you for posting this! Brings me back to those days and my childhood.
The guy doing the interview is a real jerk. He gets way too personal asking questions that are really none of his business. He should have focused on the music....just sayin'
netchemab Right. It was none of his business how much these ladies ate or weighed. What a jerk!!
That's how some did interviews back then. I saw a Jackson 5 interview from back in the 70's with a very instrusive interviewer who asked them how much money they made, etc. As well. I think it's very tacky as well.
Melanie Biggins exactly this isn’t a A&E ! Right idiot ! Music industry told him what to ask that how it is !
omg this was in Toronto! so amazing !!!
You can tell that Florence Ballard was not to Happy and she looked like she was distancing herself from Diana Ross
she was more interested in keeping flies away than the interview itself
@@quality333 No she was not. Diane wanted to be the only one in the group who could talk as we found out many years later.
It's called a WIG dufus!
Dawn you could get away with a lot of things back in 1966
Dawn Brayton you crazy she look terrible in that huge wig don’t suit her as she has a frog 🐸 thin face
This was great to see! Thank you for sharing!
You´re welcome! Thank you for eatching!
All the members of The Supremes are so attracted. What beautiful women!
I can't believe he said all that about each lady's weight. He wouldn't have said that to The Beatles.
He would say it all today in 2017. Back in the 60s women were still seen as sex objects if they were in entertainment.
remarks were made about Lennon being the fat Beatle and he didnt like it so by 1967 till the day he died he made sure he was as skinny as a rail
and what about His own weight
@@orettasmith155 what does it matter? The guy was probably 65 or 68 in 1966 He prob croaked before the disco era
Ok
Extremely talented women. I always admired their class. I was a young boy back then but I knew something about the Supremes was just that-supreme. Their songs were and always will be a big part of my life. Sorry they had to endure interviews like this. They brought so much joy to so many people. I feel fortunate to have been able to live in a time when they were making music. I miss those days!!
Florence is my girl. I love her.
I have loved Diana Ross since the very beginning. Her voice and her kindness and her beauty. She is,a rare blessing to this sad old earth.
Florence ultimately couldn’t do that, and it was her downfall.
loved Diana's beautiful voice.
CHA CHING

Their huge hit that summer was "Reflections" and their performance was something I'll never forget. Thank you SO much for posting this uber rare clip. It is greatly appreciated!

amazing interview!!!! they are in my city Toronto 💘💘💘 I love this
Their compensation, a measly $100 a week, was characterized as an "allowance," as if they were little kids. It showed the reign Daddy Gordy had on his girls. You can bet the Beatles didn't receive "allowances" from Capitol Records in the 60's.
Highway robbery!!!!!
Message : The black company can"t do what the white companies do. Get it?
@@michellekirkendall818 I admit that the black record labels didn't have the revenue that white labels did, but nah, Gordy could have done better with the Supremes and other Motown acts. You can bet your life that he wasn't living modestly at that time.
