- On January 15, 1968, Diana Ross and The Supremes appeared in Amsterdam for a tour.
They were interviewed by Bojoura (dutch singer) for the Vjoew show, which filmed their rehearsal at RAI Convention Center in January 16, arriving at the airport and backstage moments. This was Cindy's first international tour!

Diana Ross is a born entertainer, she knew how to work people and the camera from day one...
Werd!
Classic Diana...with her young articulation. Love, Love, Love Ms. Ross!!!
A legend in the making. Diana Ross.
No, a legend in the making was the group, THE SUPREMES. As I recall, Diane was ONE of them!!!!! Diane, as a solo act, is a remnant of THAT legend!
Alain Quartermaine Sorry Queen.. Don’t Know Where You Get Your Info From.. But The Supremes Who Fans Like.. Especially African-Americans.. Diana Is Not A Favorite.. But She Was Part Of A Group..
@@juniebe4 lol are you even Black cause she is the ultimate Supreme. Every young Black person loves her for the wiz, pose tribute or her kids mainly Tracee. You know how many BET awards she has with her group?! Lol don’t hate the Boss.

MISS ROSS!! She just always SHINES. And she was carrying such a huge weight on her shoulders at this time! She’s beautiful; talented, and just too amazing for words!
When u say carrying huge weight do u mean Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong
The Dude/Queen Comments are Ignorant.. But He Is Entitled To His Opinion
Just love this interview with the Supremes.,but then again I love anything they do!
So cool to see how these ladies commanded a room and Diana was very sweet handing that interview question over to Mary.
Oh come on - that’s not how it came off. The interviewer was told to talk to only Diana Ross. And if Ross gets a little tired or doesn’t want to answer some questions then she’ll hand it off to Mary Wilson since Cindy was new to the group still. It certainly wasn’t Diana Ross being gracious. Because she didn’t know how to be gracious.
I met her in high school in NYC and I got the feeling she is the epitome of what Motown was trying to create. We were in Harlem and people were not going bananas over her. But she was very observant of everything. Not in a nervous way, but in a not missing a thing way. I believe that’s something she learned early and I think it separated her from other women @Motown who just wanted to sing and have fun. Even then in the early 80’s as a huge star you could see her training on full display...
Just saw her 9/10/22, first time seeing her....SHE IS VERY OBSERVANT. ADDRESSED EVERYONE SHE COULD. Diva

You said it all.
a great piece of cinema/music/culture history
Im in SUPREME HEAVEN! Thanks
A great posting again. And this video solves a years old mystery: A cd was later produced entitled "Classic Diana Ross and The Supremes" where the front cover has Diana, Mary and Cindy on a stage performing. Each one is in a different outfit. Although it wasn't unheard of, they usually performed in their identical "uniforms". These cd outfits didn't seem to go together at all. Now we find out that the cd photo is from the rehearsal (and not from a real show) shown in this video.
it seems that this was a common practice for the ladies (Sammy Davis show, ernie ford with danny thomas. to try on several looks to see what photographed best..
Regardless of how Mary or Cindy "looks" in this footage, I'm just glad to see it posted on here! RUclips rocks!
Wonderful .. Almost 50 years later
Nice to see that
So many times I've heard how Diana always hogged the interviews. Here (at 4:55) she very graciously passes the baton to "the girls"...well, Mary anyway. Since Cindy was fairly new to the group and this was her very first European tour with the Supes, she is justifiably quiet and timid. Great video. Loved it! Thank you.
@Punkanelly Lovejoy if you read about the rtl tour you will see Mary was causing problems about pay & Diana even offered to use her personal finances to pay her what the company didn't.
E Z She wanted to preserve her voice.
She never hogged the interviews..The interviewers always stayed glued to her...Because they assumed she was the leader of the group..When in fact it wasn't her decision to rename the group..
It's good she did, she seemed to be flubbing a lot and I think she knew it.
@@manuelcampuzano558 well she must get tiered of having to carry the whole group. It’s like none of the rest were star worthy. It’s always 1 but sometimes you get a Dr. Dre and Ice Cube… or
Love that newer stuff keeps on resurfacing! Literally some of the most photographed and filmed ladies in pop music history ever. 😍😎
Diana was mature for her age
I love this...To me Diana has not changed a bit..She's still looks and acts the same since leaving the group..just an older version of herself..
yes i quite agree. she's all me me me.
God I hope not, I'd like to think she has grown and Matured more, I know she does interviews a lot better than here.
She still has her youthful spirit it’s external and internal beauty. I just love how she has that quality about her and it’s contagious. It’s her secret to staying around so long and successful at everything like really she can not do very little.
love DI MARY AND CINDY ;)
Thank you for posting such rare and valuable footage! feel free to post more!!
This is so cool to see Gil Askey in action at the rehearsals!

Fascinating
Cindy looks amazing!
Fantastic thank you !
What a legacy.
They were looking very well during this recording back in 68. Diana is just funny here, but Mary looks like there's something wrong. Otherwise, Cindy looks very sharp and seems to be happy, but she was a little shy too, probably because at that time everybody was concerned about "will Florence ever come back?".
Florence was missed in this interview, she was always the best suited to talk in interviews and the scenes offstage would be more humorous.
Mary was probably thinking that she was next to be ousted as this interview was conducted just a few months after Flo was sent packing after protesting the new group's new moniker "Diana Ross and the Supremes."
@@jackanthony976 did anyone complain when Diana financially supported Flo's kids after her abusive husband drove her to bankruptcy & alcoholism
Diana Left A Trust Of $10,000 a Piece For Each Child.. And As Far As Drinking They All Drank.. And Let’s Not Forget Diana Was Caught High From Drinking And Had A Dui.. These Are Celebrities.. That’s What They Do.. Drink and Do Drugs!!
I wonder if anyone thinks that maybe Mary was dealing with something in her own personal life that had nothing to do with The Supremes?
Daina left Flo Daughter money 💰 that didn't not receive
This was in Amsterdam R.A.I. in 1968, my uncle was there
DR a star from the very beginning and like fine wine, gets better with time...
Mary's face dduring this interview says Alot
History ❤❤❤
Diana Ross was every bit the star from day one !!
Did Mary or Flo ever get an opportunity to answer a question? Dianna always was running her mouth during these interviews and you could plainly see that the other two girls were a bit irritated by it.
WHAT HAPPENED HERE ?? Diana gave Mary the mike to talk .. first time ever seeing this.. May Be that this is the part of the new Supreme s --now that Flo (( who was a strong force and Diana thought she was a threat to her career.. )) was gone... Feelings of friendship don't stand a chance for the hunger of fame.. BTW--- Mary did admit she was the weak one -- she had no where to go and her only hope was to stay a Supreme and not stand up for what was right ---like Flo did--- but later on -- she did stand up to Ross and said NO to the tour--- SHE WAS SMARTER NOW... and not that shy girl that let BG step on... Diana--- was goofy at times and acting spoiled... like she said to Patti---- WE ALL HAD TO GROW UP!!! AND that is what is so sad.. some were allowed that privilege ---- while other s were not!
She said that to Gladys
you got so much of that right. mary was weak and soft but later saw the world for what it rally was, you have to fight back or be destroyed by those who wil stop at nothng to get what they want
@@thomasdelvin3683 Most likely, Florence Ballard realized that!
This was just after their national appearance on Tarzan with Ron Eli who went straight to "save" the sexiest nun in that episode, Cindy!!!!
It's sad that Diana was the only focus of the interviewers.
Diana Ross is and was the personality of the Supremes --Naturally

Diana é linda a té mesmo em branco preto↔preto & branco💒
Watch Joan Crawford's drunken interview in similar pose at LAX from around this time. Diana reminds me of her in this.
Diana's voice is much deeper here which I believe is her true voice

True voice? You know that it's natural for a voice to change pitch, timbre, volume etc depending on mood, lvl of inner tension, emotional state, physical condition and so forth.
Every of these aapects is as "true" as the other.

I love her voice on Stormy and there are a few more others that I can't think of right off where she sang in that same tone but then she has those screechers too. Lol
I love how you still see Flo pics in the back
Oh i missed that
Yes. Let you know it wasn’t all hate with the company cause if so Berry would have made sure that everything on that tour was about the new member.
That must have been very uncomfortable for Cindy.
WHO?
@@manuelcampuzano558 Cindy had already paid her dues having already sung with Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles for six years and not having any real top success. It was now Cindy's turn to shine....and why not?
i kinda dont like how they only takeing to diana and ignoreing mary n cindy they are a trio and all thre have speaking voices
diana was easy flowing (?) and could hold a conversation, while Mary always seems to be one card short of a full deck.. not an insult just an observation.. Dian took constant courses and training classes as to how to perform and handle yourself,, charm schools confidence building. and in the 70s she was well known at every est an other far out self awareness groups.
Girl shut up
@@thomasdelvin3683 you’re so right!!!!!!
At this point the name of the group was Diana Ross and The Supremes@@thomasdelvin3683Diana Ross was the featured act.. I'm sorry that makes you so so sad
what is the song at 4:00 ?
That camera person was shady Lol. He or she sensed tension and cut to facial expressions and showed Diana being fidgety during the interview.
To be supreme
is that a wig on her eyelids at 7:19?
it's a black garage door.
Berry Gordy used Mary to rehearse Cindy after Florence was gone. She had to teach her the choreography and the background notes!
in dreamgirls Effie accuses Lorel of betraying her behind her back.. Mary was indeed a traitor. she not only helped cindy with the moves and songs but her makeup and dance routines. she was more than willing to promote cindy as a replacement instead of saying ," Berry we really need FLO"
@@thomasdelvin3683 I hope u don’t believe Dreamgirls to be accurate... but Mary Wilson WAS and is a SNAKE. You’re absolutely right
@@dddddadadad1796 no she wasn’t lmfao. Florence stated that she already knew. And her and Mary still remained best friends.
@@thomasdelvin3683 Mary should have known that once Florence was gone that her own power would be diminished.
@@thomasdelvin3683 No, Mary Wilson Had No Choice To Teach!! Cindy Birdsong 🕊️ The Routine Dances, Do Her Makeup!! And All Else That She Was Or Had To Do!! Remember When Florence Ballard Got Replaced By Cindy Birdsong!! Diana Ross Once Said To The Supreme's.. When Flo Was Once Apart Of The Group!! ( She!! Berry told the press to call her Miss Ross the press was only interested in what Diana had to say.
If the press was only interested in what Diana had to say then why did the press despite orders from Berry continually defy his orders and ask questions of Cindy and Mary only to have Diana cut in and answer them. It was wishful and manipulative thinking on Berry's part that the press was only interested in what Diana had to say. If the press was interested in asking only Diana questions then Berry would not have had to issue such a ridiculous mandate to the press.
Cindy seems so shy and out of it.
A few interviews before this one. Diana went to Berry Gordy and complained about Cindy talking during interviews. Berry order that Diana is the only one allowed to talk and answer questions.
+DetroitLives313 a 24 year-old-little-girl from Detroit goes to her father to "complain"?
Yep! She sure did. She, Miss Ross even had Gladys Knight and the Pips pulled from a tour because they were too big of a crowd pleaser and she did not like that competitive element.
Also, Miss Ross must have been a bit miffed when Mary told the interviewer that the Supremes may do a movie in the future. Miss Ross was not going to have any of that....I'm sure Miss Ross was thinking that if anyone was going to do a movie it was Miss Ross herself...without those annoying other two Supremes sharing the spotlight....and lo and behold.....a mere three years after this interview Miss Ross starred in Lady Sings the Blues.....all by herself.
But apparently Gordy and Ross changed their minds about Diana being the only one allowed to talk as I see that Mary is talking quite a bit and Diana has even ceded the interview to Mary and Cindy by stating that the "girls" can explain things as well as she can.
I know there's footage with Florence.... her ring is at 7:20
+breyanlovejerome that's Cindy Birdsong, that ring was probably made it for The Supremes and not only for Florence, even knowing that Flo used her ring for a long time after her departure.
Gordy probably ordered his goons to rip that ring off of Flo's finger when she was fired for good from the Supremes. I can imagine he told his henchmen to cut off Flo's finger if she did not surrender the ring.
breyanlovejerome obviously she ended up wearing Flo’s dresses and shoes
WHO?
5:06 Lol ouch.
LOL. It's funny looking at the disinterested looking faces of Mary and Cindy as Diana dominates the interviews.
why didn't she wanna say "funk"?
Mary wasn't very articulate. I can see why she wasn't asked to speak on the group's behalf. Berry was a mastermind. Diana definitely had the star power.
Fearless Fiction yes both Cindy and Mary when given the chance never came across as being anything other than passive and not very aggressive in reaching to the audience Florence seemed to have had a dynamism of her own which is why Diana no doubt wanted her out of the group
If you will read "Dream Girls" and "Motown: Money, Sex and Power" you will find that the other girls would have had more to say but the reporters were instructed by Motown management that Diana Ross was the main point person for all press meetings; no doubt when she wasn't Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong had their responses are choreographed.
This policy went back to early in the groups history.
You will notice how pissed the other 2 girls looked during the whole interview. Wilson was very hurt about the way Florence Ballard and she herself were treated.
Mary sounded very good to me, everybody does not have a voice like Diana Ross.
Actually, Mary was and still is more articulate than Diana Ross!
WTH was that about at 7:00 -- Diana pretending to cry then not??? lol goofy again -- and still so young.
It''s rather amusing to hear Mary talk about playing a nun, considering the rather private "fast" life Mary has been known to lead.
Yes well, she tried to be a home wrecker while Ross actually succeeded.
Whose home did Ross wreck?
who was that mafia guy daring to kiss the ladies as though they were hookers or bar girls. so disrespectful. but how compliant they were. maybe a fan? a promoter.. no just a mafia guy
