She was one-third of one of the greatest girl groups. Miss Ballard's complaint was "creative differences." This happened not just in The Supremes, but in other groups as well. It was HER response that created her hardship. She and the late Mary Wilson could certainly have asked what The Supremes role would be after Ross' exit. Miss Ballard could have fulfilled the groups' remaining bookings, she could have talked with industry people. There was no reason for her not to get a record deal. Other artists did. Unfortunately, Florence Ballard is being celebrated as a VICTIM. There is no reason why she couldn't be with us, possibly still singing, like Diana Ross. It's a shame that the wrong message is being sent; some 47 years later. There are books on the subject; the late Mary Wilson's 1986 book, and Diana Ross' 1993 book. They worked with Miss Ballard. I agree with your sentiments. No "Florence was a victim" stories here. I love all of the fabulous Supremes dearly but I refuse to absolve any accountability away from Florence Ballard and her role in her removal from the group she founded. However, being that she has since passed on and has been deceased for years, I choose not to rehash those things out of respect for her, the surviving members of her family, and the legacy of The Supremes. The return to love tour in 2000 was a train wreck from the start. The Supremes Mary Wilson & Cindy Birdsong was just as prevalent as Diana and should have equally been paid there fair share. What resulted was getting Mary's supremes from the Seventies. That made the Supremes fan's livid. Stopped in the name of 3/4th's percentages. Mary's gone now. @Keith Merscheim: It was foolish for the late Mary Wilson to refuse the four-million dollar offer. Ticket sales would have been bolstered had Wilson been in agreement. She let Supremes' fans down; taking a swipe at her group member, Diana Ross. Ross didn't set the terms.
Mary was very Jelous of her. She wasted decades being bitter & Negative with a smile plastered across her face bad-mouthing Diana during many interviews and in her Book. Diana still gave Mary & her Husband Money when they were Broke. It was finally when it was Not Lucrative$$ anymore to talk about Diana that she stopped.
I was a Supreme fan from beginning to end I believe that those three girls had genuine love for each other and it was Berry Gordy who drove a wedge in between them. I will always love the original Supreme but to me Jean Terrell, Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong together could have been as Big as Diana.Ross had Berry Gordy's Motown would have given them the promotion that they gave Diana Ross. Had he done that, he may not have been so heartbroken when Diana left for RCA. Once Ross left the Supremes I followed both until the end of the Supremes and continued to follow Ross until the end of the 70's I did nit care for her from the 80' s onward I was always a Msry Wilson fan until her death. She was also my favorite supreme.
@jeromehopson5404: Heartbroken? Don't fool yourself. When Florence Ballard was fired from The Supremes in 1967, she, Mary and Diana's contracts were worth $164,000.00 for nine years of work with their group. By the time Diana Ross decided to go to RCA, after twenty years of work at Motown Records, her contract was worth only $250,000.00. Don't think she didn't do what Ray Charles did, when he was offered a better deal at ABC....."Berry, can you match it"? His answer was "no I can't."His "big star" wasn't making the money you thought she made. She went to RCA in a hurry. Berry Gordy literally was getting over. She didn't fail to mention that she had three kids (at that time she had only her three girls) and she needed that 20 million RCA offered. Heartbroken? Berry dodged a bullet for years....when Florence was fired, her general release gave her $164,000.00 for nine years of work.
And, The NEW Supremes did very well. They had a hit BEFORE the new Diana Ross, solo star. "Up The Ladder To The Roof" was #1 in 1970; before "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" for Ross. The new group didn't start over, they performed at the same venues, did the same television shows, etc. They weren't downtrodden. They did very well from 1970 to 1977.
Old comment, but many sources state that Berry was rather hurt by Ross’ departure. Including Berry himself. But yeah, I don’t disagree with your overall statement. The other Supremes are unnecessarily victimized when they generally did fine on their own.
It is so weird. If Diana Ross were a man, you would applaud her efforts, but because Ross is a woman, we try to denigrate her. Beyonce, Patti, and Smokey Robinson have all created a solo career that has surpassed their career as a group. Yet, for 60 years, we are still talking about Diana Ross career and painting her as some type of fraud. You can't reach the status Ross has achieved if you have no talent. Let's celebrate her tenacity and stop trying to destroy the woman who gave women like Oprah, Beyonce, and Gayle King hope

Ms. Ross definitely has excellent enunciation & pitch control. Her meticulous wording within songs & her tone of voice is probably why she is so successful as a artiste. Had her voice been any different as a solo vocalist or with the Supremes she & the Supremes may not have been as successful. On a positive note she is my favourite female vocalist, her voice & tone is amongst the best...

In Flos taped interview she said Gordy's feelings towards her changed after he mentioned her acting, her reply was she didn't know anything about acting, he lost interest, Flo's song "Ain't That Good News" from the "Sam Cooke" LP was outstanding, why she wasn't allowed to sing it😢 during the Live Sam Cooke medley was wrong, then her two Christmas song were selved never to be heard of for another 20 years, had she been given those opportunities they could have kept peace in the group, on some albums i actually found the boring, one was the Supremes sing HDH, some songs just weren't right for Ross, having at least one sing each for Flo and Mary would have broken the monotony
I’m a big Ross fan but I agree with you. I think the magical part of singing groups is they all bring something unique. They could’ve taken greater advantage of that, and it would’ve assuaged some tension.

No, she didn't have that "X" factor, she just slept her way to the top and she did that part very well by screwing around with her married lover, Berry Gordy....
If this RUclips is supposed to be a Supremes story through 2000 (as noted in the title), the Jean years MUST be considerably featured. She served magnificently as lead for nearly four years, had hits, and kept the group's unique sound and presence alive. Gordy's fear that the initial great success of the Jean-led Supremes would outshine Ross resulted in his negligence in promoting the Jean-led group, and that should be part of this story as well. Instead this video ceases to discuss the group after Ross leaves and focuses only on her. Typical!
Mary and Diana standing in front of the Flo's casket, to me, was the sad ultimate farewell to the original Supremes moment, alluded to in Someday We'll be Together. . . . Maybe there is a brief moment here, even in a brief passing moment, that transpired between both Mary and Diana, and they were authentically grief stricken and real.

And she made sure to have a baby with the CEO, you can call it selfish and others may say business savvy, but she always, always gave you Glam and Diva, Mrs Ross was/is the Boss. I have to be honest. I saw Diana Ross in concert at Radio City Music Hall and honestly thought it was a waste of my money and time. During the show I looked at my friend, who I also paid for his ticket and said to him, this show was a complete waste of money and he pretty much agreed. When I go see a singer perform, I expect them to sing the songs. Not sing half of each song and then start talking, then bring your whole family on stage and start introducing each one to the audience, then spend so much time off stage cause she wants to change costumes. I'm like girl Tina Turner has wardrobe changes, but she sings her songs from beginning to end. I know Diana ain't Tina, but I didn't pay money to meet her family or hear her talk through her songs. It felt more like one of those Las Vegas lounge acts. But I was not in Vegas. I was at Radio City in New York City. I know artists get older, and they might not have the same energy, but that show was ridiculous. I saw Tina Turner. I believe that same year in Radio City. Tina was doing 5 or 6 shows back to back, which surprised me because I know artists do 2 or 3 shows, then take a day or two off, but Tina was doing all the shows together. I bought tickets to her last show at Radio City. I was expecting Tina's voice might be a little soar because she did perform 5 to 6 shows in a row. Tina Turner came on that stage and sang every song from beginning to end, and her voice sounded amazing. It was as if I was at the first of 6 shows. Now that was a ticket and time well spent. I never went to any of Diana Ross shows after that, not even for free. I'm glad the Supremes Reunion tour was canceled. They only performed 15 shows out of 30 they were scheduled to do because ticket sales were so bad. Not performing with Mary & Cindy ruined that whole reunion tour because of Diana shenanigans. When Diana gets to the gates of heaven, Diana has a lot of explaining to do!!!

Don;t know why people think of Diana Ross as the main lead on the Supremes she is not such a good person .. She completely screwed all of them over including poor Florence who was cast aside .. think documentary is biased if anything the true lead singer was Florence .. but Diana got busy and wanted to take over .. before Diana it was a family and soon after not so much .. I strongly dislike one sided documentaries like this one.. Tell the Truth !
Okay I have held my tongue for way too long., I have been a Supremes fan since 1986. When I was 16 years old. I heard Baby love playing on the radio one day. And I was hooked. Okay Diana did have a beautiful voice and she was also the IT girl. But Florence and Mary were just as equally beautiful as could also sing. The only reason why Diana stole the spotlight, is because , berry g. Had the hots for her. He showed Diana favoritism from the beginning. And then in 1965 Diana and berry became lovers. Gordy then didn't care about Mary and Florence. So he pushed flo and Mary into the background. And promoted Diana to the top. This is how it happened. This is the truth. If berry hadn't been sleeping with Diana. She never would have made it like she did . So stop saying that Florence and Mary were not talented singers because they both were. Like it or lump it . I don't care. The truth has to be told.
On one hand I agree. On the other end: Florence, Mary and Diana were perfection together. Neither Mary or Florence could have brought the sublime quality to the leads the way Diana did, it's that simple.
Even Mary is quoted as saying Berry Gordy didn't take any notice of Diana Ross until the Supreme's third number 1 hit. The romance began after the public responded favorably to Ross' voice. By then he knew he had a winner. The Supremes were the first black group to sell a million records three years in a row (the fourth year went to Barbara Streisand). To this day they remain the most commercially successful Motown group ever. So of course Gordy went with the money, with Ross as lead, just as any record producer would. It wasn't personal. Flo and Mary were already in the background. Why mess with the magic? Could Berry Gordy have been more thoughtful, more caring, more involved in the feelings of these young girls, yeah. But he was a business man first and last, and he probably couldn't believe his luck. People talk about Ross destroying Flo's career, but until Flo left, the girls split 5 cents on the dollar for each record sold. Five cents split three ways, think about that. If that's not exhibit A of money over love I don't know what is.
You spew this tripe as if we haven't heard the same hate filled rants about Diana for years. It sounds like a personal problem cause Diana living her best life selling out arenas at 79 yrs old
That is wrong. It was Betty McGowan who was the last to join the group. Also it was Flo and Paul Williams who first got Mary then Diana and finally Betty.
Flo had that ghetto-black girl attitude where she did not even show up for performances. That is why Berry had Cindy Birdsong in the wings. Berry was ol' skool and did what he had to do because Flo would have ruined the group, the same way Flo destroyed her life after she left the group due to her bad behavior and her drinking problems.
@@mahoganyflame2000 You are correct! These people are Ghetto like Flo. What would Gordy benefit by destroying Florence. Florence tried to destroy the Supremes and that is why Berry got Cindy Birdsong as a backup and had to use Cindy, for Flo thought that she was going to continue to sabotage the group and act out those Ghetto-troublesome episodes. Flo's husband, a no-good Black man, dogged her out, beat her, used up her money, and pumped her up with babies that he did not, and she could not barely take care of. Diana or Berry had nothing to do with that. Then the alcohol and drugs caused her body to give.

In "The Wiz," a schoolteacher is encouraged to date, to venture out (by her mother). She gets caught in a blizzard, and her whole life changes. Let me give another example. The "Cowardly Lion" goes to the Wizard to get "courage." He learns that he ALREADY HAS courage, and all he has to do is ACT LIKE HE HAS IT. Because, truthfully, you cannot get it from anyone.
@@michellekirkendall818yes I don’t know why folks like to at like that group were victims it’s delusional
Old comment, but many sources state that Berry was rather hurt by Ross’ departure. Including Berry himself. But yeah, I don’t disagree with your overall statement. The other Supremes are unnecessarily victimized when they generally did fine on their own.

Diana’s voice is magical. I especially love her doing standards.
Diana Ross really didn't have any talent; her talent was sleeping with Berry Gordy....please, let's keep it real.

Don't forget her jazzy/doowop-like phrasing.
But that voice made the other girls money and Motown. Love Ross she will always be Supreme never forget that.
She sings flat a lot now.
A TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT! This is yet another Diana Ross story, and not a "SUPREMES" STORY. A Supremes story must center around the group, not around Ross. Further, it must strongly include the spectacular JEAN TERRELL YEARS!

If this is all about Diana Ross, then why isn't she there?
What?
Did you see Lady Sings the Blues, she played a kid!!!!
Ross overacted in Lady Sings the Blues. That's why she did not win the award.
In Flos taped interview she said Gordy's feelings towards her changed after he mentioned her acting, her reply was she didn't know anything about acting, he lost interest, Flo's song "Ain't That Good News" from the "Sam Cooke" LP was outstanding, why she wasn't
allowed to sing it😢 during the Live Sam Cooke medley was wrong, then her two Christmas song were selved never to be heard of for another 20 years, had she been given those opportunities they could have kept peace in the group, on some albums i actually found the boring, one was the Supremes sing HDH, some songs just weren't right for Ross, having at least one sing each for Flo and Mary would have broken the monotony
I’m a big Ross fan but I agree with you. I think the magical part of singing groups is they all bring something unique. They could’ve taken greater advantage of that, and it would’ve assuaged some tension.
This is why I love her 18:23. Diana was attentive. Notice she looks in the monitors and raises her cane to the level Mary’s is at. Assuming Mary had it at the correct level to begin with.
Yes this is what the people notice,Florence was not in sync with them on that part,Barry probably noticed that too! 😮
R N Mary was usually on point with choreography; Diana and Florence would often take cues from her about when to do what.
I love ALL of the SUPREMES and ALL of the PRIMETTES!, however, Miss Ballard is my favorite. I would just love, respect and trust her without trying to romance her. Diana looked like a cartoon character in the early days with the wigs, big eyelashes and the way her head dangled on her neck. But she had that X factor the others did not.
The Supremes were glamorous black girl magic!
…the ugly ducking was also a tomboy, and then Diana turned out to be one of the most beautiful women in the world!!!
…and she was on the swim team in High School. Now, how many black girl can say that? And in the yearbook she was named best dressed…she made her own clothing!!!
@clbernier2
Florence was beautiful in my humble opinion 🙏🔥🔥💯
They glossed over how poorly Florence was treated. Berry constantly called her fat.
People also treated Diana poorly as well. Calling her skinny to that she’ll never make it or can’t sing. Peers at Motown. But she kept it going
of course
Nobody glossed over anything. The fact that there was tension between Florence Ballard and Berry Gordy is mentioned
Read the updated books on the "Boss". I love Diana, but she and Berry treated the other ladies wrong. Now Smoky talking about sleeping with her. He could have taken that so call news to the grave ♥
they always gloss over how florence was treated
It's just "Business ", destroyed a lot of people. It killed other's dreams to build someone else's dreams dreams. Diana and Berry were friends with benefits. ♥
And she made sure to have a baby with the CEO, you can call it selfish and others may say business savvy, but she always, always gave you Glam and Diva, Mrs Ross was/is the Boss. If Marilyn Monroe can sleep with very wealthy and powerful men so can Mrs. Ross. Mrs. Ross knew her worth and knew she didn't have to split the pie 3 ways when she can have the whole pie. She left the group starred in movies and music and became an international superstar. I respect and love her she is the epitome of a Diva, her status is legendary, and I'm just surprised it took them so long to award her that!
@Denise Henry: Many artists have "creative differences." The Supremes are no exception. It's what you DO ABOUT IT that counts. You look for record deals, you don't start getting drunk, missing rehearsals, not showing up for certain dates. Florence was rapped at a party very early, and back in those days there was no shrinks or help.
@clbernier2: In THOSE DAYS? What? The 1960's weren't "wagon train" days? How could a great, black owned, independent record company have operated? Psychiatry and mental therapy began in the 1800's. Mental health treatment didn't start TODAY. How do you have a shrink TODAY without having one THEN? I said 1800's. Mental health was an issue as long as the Earth has been here! No, I think she chose belligerence instead of looking out for her interests. A therapist may have been able to assist.
Do you happen to have the episode with John Walsh?

Diana Is Not A Soulful Singer.. A Pop Singer

Who can forget how Ross an Gordy help destroy Flo's life.
You say "helped" destroy her career as if they wanted to on purpose which was not true. It was business and Flo brought alot of it on herself.
@Chris M: Not a good observation on your part. There is a moral to the story, and Dorothy:s AGE has nothing to do with it.
