With 12 number one hits to their credit, the Supremes were undoubtedly the reigning queens of Motown. The name of the group has since become synonymous with Diana Ross, the lead singer who brought them to prominence.
After Ross left the Supremes in 1969 for a successful solo career, original member Mary Wilson kept the group alive throughout the next decade with a revolving door of replacements.
Often battling Motown’s indifference, personal conflicts and their own self-doubts, the Supremes in the 1970s nevertheless made some outstanding if overlooked recordings. The real legacy of the Supremes belongs to all eight of the talented women who performed with the group. The departure of Ross may have closed a chapter for the group, but it did not end their story.
