This piece, unfortunately, has a few facts about our Diva wrong. Her second #1 was "Touch Me in the Morning", which was overlooked at the Grammys. She also had a second #1 in 1976 , "Love Hangover", a classic to this day. Jealousy of her success and tenacity in staying relevant couldn't even dampen her drive.

A couple of things about Diana Ross. She had an unusual beauty like you couldn't decide if she was beautiful or not because her face is so expressive as opposed to being just pretty and static....Diana Ross is a high fashion model...many are called but few are chosen....The others may have been considered beautiful but Diana ruled in publicity stills....in photos she is incredibly beautiful....that woman in photos is her creation and she is a fashion legend because of it....Also when Diana sings she suddenly becomes exquisitely beautiful....like a beautiful bird of paradise....legend legend legend legend legend...

She would have won the Oscar for 'Blues' except for the fact that Judy Garland had been cheated out of so many Oscars that the Academy couldn't pass up giving it to her daughter Liza Minnelli for a stellar performance in "Cabaret" that year (1973 for '72).

Even Billboard Magazine got it wrong about a year ago. Also, one of the few people (not to mention female or African American) who have replaced Johnny Carson when he needed time off. Instead of it being about a "boss' in the usual way we think of one it was alluding to LOVE itself teaching someone who was the boss. most people want to feel pop music, but not have to think about it. "The Boss" was more successful as a dance club hit than a chart hit; it was HUGE in the clubs.

1:09 The rarest Diana Ross record in the world is recently found: Wilson Pickett & The Primettes/pre-Motown Supremes-"Let Me Be Your Boy" was licensed by local Detroit label Correc-Tone Records to MGM Records in 1962 for national/international distribution on MGM's CUB Records subsidiary, including a dual format pressing in The Philippines--- on both 7" 45 rpm... AND 10" 78 RPM; Diana’s voice soars and is clearly recognizable; neither Wilson Pickett, Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson nor Diana ever knew they indeed made a 78 rpm record, this format had already been discontinued in the U.S. record labels between 1958-60 but, outside the U.S., 78s were still being pressed in the Philippines, South America, Canada and Africa, to name a few; in most cases, the artists themselves never knew about or were paid royalties for record sales outside the U.S. (i.e. Berry Gordy, Jr. himself, for example, had never seen The Marvelettes-"Silly Boy"/"Way Over There" 78 rpm on Tamla, pressed by Dyna Records in the Philippines and, when shown my copy of the record image last year during The Blinky Williams Show at The Hollywood Catalina Jazz Club, Gordy exclaimed, "Dyna?!" See the article "The Marvelettes Motown 78 RPM Discovered"); I will be posting the video of Diana's Wilson Pickett & The Primettes CUB 78 shortly; Diana: I would proudly love to show you your rarest record in the world---and it is a white label promotional copy! Contact me, you will LOVE THIS RECORD as you truly rock it at 78 rpm!--All The Diana Ross "Late 78" Best, Mark Matlock/Andromeda International Records

For every (1) Motown hit group, there were at least (5) others that unfortunately did not achieve hit status---Mark/Andromeda International Records

In my humble opinion her best albums were those produced by Ashford and Simpson, particularly her first solo album "Diana Ross". Every song on that one is great and she really showed off her vocal chops. I hung in there with her when she tried some hip hop flavor with "Workin' Overtime" but, overtime or not, it didn't quite work. Somewhat better was the album "The Force Behind the Power" which contained too many clunkers but also included the gorgeous ballad "If We Hold On Together" which was a huge hit overseas. Much is made of the RCA album in this video (because of the "deal", the money, etc) but as an album it was weak, the production too safe and uninspired, and it felt like she was trying on styles of music rather than presenting a cohesive album. I never really connected with the belabored single "Mirror, Mirror" nor "Swept Away" (much as I like Hall + Oates, who produced it). "Chain Reaction" wasn't bad, just overly familiar, "Muscles" was fun as a novelty hit, "Missing You" a poignant tribute to Marvin, but the re-make of "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" added nothing to the original. This video says her most successful album was "Diana" but to me that was a 2-single album surrounded by filler, and I am a huge Nile Rogers fan. "The Boss", another Ashford and Simpson album is, cut for cut, a better album and has very little filler. Much as I love ALL her big Motown hits I really feel the magic of Diana Ross is most effectively captured in two powerful singles, the spiritually ethereal anthem "Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand") and the downright epic grandeur of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". Diana Ross is one tough cookie and deserves her stardom; she will long be an inspiration to many. Now Miss Ross, I adore you but stop with the lame remixes of your old dance hits and give us one more killer solo album. Hook up with them English boys like Tina did. I am quite sure you can pull an unexpected comeback off even though you've never gone away! All hail the REAL queen!
