This configuration of the Supremes only lasted one year as Cindy Birdsong was away starting a family. But every configuration of the Supremes was special in their own way and the amazing vocals of Jean Terrell are still front and center here. Jean is the lead vocalist on many of my favorite Supremes recordings in the early 70s. "Nathan Jones", "River Deep Mountain High" and so many other big hits.
Jean Terrell was a great replacement, she did not 'copy cat' Diana and gave the Supremes a new image & style. Berry Gordy swept them aside once Diana left. Great Group always!👍
It was sooooo, soooooo SOULFUL, Diane's voice was weak, thin, nasally & ultra pop, no comparison between the two, sorry, but not sorry, I'd take Jean Terrell & or Mary Wilson ANYDAY over Ross. Never was a fan of her very weak, whimpering, nasally voice, I actually find it pretty cringe worthy ✋🏾😝👎🏾!!!
have you seen The Former Ladies of the Supremes at the Dominion concert clip? Jean Scherrie and Lynda? it is here on YT and is far better than any live full concert I've seen by any grouping of Supremes....the arrangements are not the usual live speedy, brassy mess that seems to have plagued every line up live in concert...
Jean and that wonderful voice. She was incredible, probably a little bit scary to Berry Gordy because of the Supremes ability to possibly usurp Miss Ross, something Berry wouldn't want. Seeing this makes you realize just how great they were after Diana left.
Exactly and thats why Berry stopped promoting them, because they were a threat, and when Diana and The Surpemes went there separate ways, the Supremes with the incomparable Jean Terrell hits keep coming when at first Diana's solo career stalled
All the post-Diana lineups were good, and they truly had potential beyond Jean-Mary-Cindy, but I don't think Gordy actively sabotaged the group. Motown's operational model changed after Holland-Dozier-Holland left, a change that impacted most of Motown's hit groups from the 60s and even a solo Diana in the 70s. The Motown acts that would dominate in the 70s -- Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and The Commodores come to mind -- wrote and produced their own material. The Supremes didn't have the wherewithal to A&R their own material, so they fell off. By comparison, Diana also had really inconsistent chart showings in the seventies despite consistent support from Gordy. A good example of all of the above is Love Machine by The Miracles. Written by two members of the group, that song took the group from has been status all the way back to #1 in 1975-76 before they immediately fell all the way back off. The Supremes look beautiful and classy in this clip, but I almost can't believe Motown wasted a TV appearance on an oldie like Tossin' and Turnin'. Such a bad decision and wasted opportunity was the real sabotage. After 1971, Gordy didn't really have a solid grasp on where to take The Supremes, and they were pretty much back to where they had been before Where Did Our Love Go when Diana-Mary-Florence were the "no-hit Supremes" trying out different Motown producers and songs looking for a hit.
Always nice to see new Supremes clips. I bet Mary would have loved to have seen this again. I enjoy Jean's take on "My World is Empty Without You." "Tossin and Turnin" is fun, too.
Jean Lynda and Jean sound absolutely beautiful and they are equally singing together and they will be forever and always Supreme 💎💎💎💎⭐⭐⭐. This will always be one of my favorite line ups .
Great to see this video, I remember this era of Supremes from back in my teen years, lol. They all looked so young, Lynda unrecognizable, thought it was Freda Payne
I get it. Those songs were written for Diana’s voice so Jean had an unfair job. The only person I’ve ever heard come even close to capturing Diana’s magic on the Supremes song was The Isley’s singing I Hear a Symphony. No shade to Jean or anyone else. Brian really understood her voice so well.
Just imagine The Supremes if they would have had the backing of Motown records wow Jean Terrell incredible The Supremes incredible they indeed and thank God for social media without Diana Ross and I love Diana Ross but the Supremes were supremely Supreme without
@@johnfulton4061 I agree, Jean Terrell was a much better singer than Diana Ross, but Diana Ross had a really unique voice, especially for a black woman. Diana could have sung hits released in the early 60s by singers like Lesley Gore, Shelly Fabares, and Petula Clark, and listeners would not have even been sure it was a black woman singing. Diana was and is a good and charismatic singer, but it must be said that her voice did a lot of the work.

The decline in The Supremes' material after 1971 corresponded almost perfectly with their fall off on the charts.
They promoted the supremes with Diana they could have promoted the supremes without Diana. Berry was the one who Picked jean as Diana's replacement . So I don't buy the theory that they didn't know what to do with the supremes.
THESE ARE THE OFFICIAL SUPREMES. THESE ARE NO "TOURING VERSION" NOR WERE THEY A "RUSE". IT SOUNDS LIKE SOME REPLIERS ON HERE WERE NOT AROUND WHEN THIS MUSICAL HISTORY WAS MADE. WITH THE GOLDEN-VOICED JEAN TERRELL AS LEAD, THE SUPREMES HAD NINE ALBUMS, SEVERAL GOLD RECORDS, ADDITIONAL SPIN OFF LPS, AND MAJOR TV AND CLUB APPEARANCES. A VERY BIG SHOW-BIZ DEAL WAS MADE WHEN DIANA LEFT THE GROUP AND THE MAGNIFICENT JEAN TERRELL CAME IN AS THE NEW LEAD SINGER. A LIVE DOUBLE LP WAS RELEASED CAPTURING THIS EVENT. JEAN REMAINED AS LEAD FOR NEARLY FOUR YEARS. Berry Gordy eventually became uneasy with the success of the new group as he feared they would eclipse Ross by taking record sales away from her. In fact, their first single charted much, much higher than her first single! Hence, he eventually removed the best writers and musicians from the group and let them flounder. They were fantastic, but in the end this wonderful group was sabotaged.
You are absolutely correct about what you said. Barry Gordy didn't like that the new Supremes became so successful and became direct competition the solo career of Diana Ross. Barry had a lot of money invested in making Diana a huge solo star for Motown. He intentionally stop having the new Supremes promoted. They were given substandard material to record to fulfill their contractual obligations. After that, they were dropped from the Motown label.
Mary Wilson is there in all her glory. All long as she’s there we have the Supremes, but you are correct it’s not the original Supremes. Diana and Flo and Cindy had left the group.
My World sounds amazing . As for the rest , it’s just hard to cover Diana. She stays on the melody so well it sounds awkward hearing someone else singing her songs. Jean is an incredible vocalist. I love her voice for sure.
Lynda’s mic wasn’t turned down IMO, I think that the act still continued unfortunately to have this Motown girl groups live-performances thing about having the lead’s mic way turned up and louder, incomprehensibly and frustratingly. In the second performance at the end when Mary and Lynda’s vocals come in louder, the JML lineup sounds better complementing one another’s voices and the group by then should’ve reflected 3 contemporary singers with voices all equally mic’d and heard, IMO. They looked great performing here - definitely, no other female group could still even then look so “Supreme.” Ty for posting! 😎
Jean was one of the greatest soul singers of the 70s. Gordy chose her for her talent (these are not "fake" Supremes, as some suggest here: he chose her as Ross's replacement when she left) but then he didn't seem to know just what to do with her as time went on. It was detrimental to the group when Cindy Birdsong left to have a baby and Linda Laurence (whose mic is not working right here--she has a big voice) replaced her. Laurence was very talented but it was too much to ask the fans to accept yet another change. And there were more to come. Terrell and Laurence would leave soon--but then Birdsong would return. And Scherrie Payne, with her huge dynamic voice, would come in. That was a brilliant trio (Wilson-Payne-Birdsong), but then Mary's useless and abusive husband kicked Birdsong out of the group. Birdsong was replaced by Susaye Greene, who should have been developed as a solo artist instead. That was a shame: there was great potential in the Wilson-Payne-Birdsong lineup and it echoed the former Supremes.
Supersinger and Songwriter Syreeta was the missing link.that could've ushered them into the singer-songwriter, Stevie Wonder drenched 70s. Stupid Mary vetoed and Barry washed his hands...
@taddyd1 Berry Gordy wanted Syettta Garrett to be with the Supremes .Mary told that Berry that Jean Terrell was the lead singer. He wanted Stevie Wonder 's wife as lead singer. MARY VETOED THAT CHOICE.
@@taddyd1 I know all about that phone call and that Gordy (it's Berry, btw, not Barry) changed his mind. This is after he had groomed Jean, after Mary and Cindy had rehearsed with Jean, started recording with Jean, and they had just brought her onstage and announced she would be Ross's replacement. How would that have looked? Mary's not stupid: she not only knew Jean was a great singer, she also didn't want another of Gordy's paramours in the group.
@@taddyd1No, but Berry was a mentor to Syreeta and was very benevolent towards her. According to a few people, it was like a favorite uncle/spoiled niece type of thing. I don't blame Mary. Going through another scenario where the lead singer of The Supremes was another one of Berry's spoiled brats would've been unbearable. I don't think Syreeta would've enjoyed it much, either.
Wonderful, which year is this and who are the individual singers? Some of us were not around at this time. This kind of information is important! Thank you!
They just seem so awkward with each other when covering the original Supremes songs. That conversational piece is a strain, (maybe that audience member put them off) PLUS when Dick refered to them as the Andrew Sisters, You know Mary was gonna rebuke that they “Not that white”, and Jean new better to quickly interupt “Not that old”. (Doubters watch) They got good singing their new (ex-Diana) songs,
A couple interesting things as the date is June 72- first all the girls look and sound great however this was a Copa engagement where according to Mary's and a Motown history book both Jean and Mary became sick thru the run and missed performances, a pregnant Cindy was brought in and Jules Podell was furious with the changing line up each night. Also Your Wonderful Sweet Sweet was just to be released from Floy Joy and the Jimmy Webb lp not released until November. Surprised they had Tossin and Turning recorded already. Maybe they wanted to sing something Lynda was on
First thing wow this is amazing I’ve never seen this performsnce before and it was nice to see how Jean handled their glory day hits BUT I need to know whose idea it was to perform a medley of their old hits instead of performing their then current material? Why didn’t they sing Floy Joy or Automatically Sunshine or even I’ll Guess I’ll Miss The Man? This was a bad move but we know Berry had tossed them aside by this point but good grief
Rare performance that I've never seen before today. Thanks for sharing. Never seen Jean perform "Reflections" in that arrangement. Random to have Mary sing a lead part and not have Lynda do a bit, too. 🤔 And...so, Jean was the one that did the slow version of "My World is Empty Without You" before Scherrie? 🤔 Her vocals are terrific. The only one working their outfit, though, is Mary. Lynda's bust and necklace are distracting. Too many layers and sleeves too long. Jean should've taken off the poncho to perform. The choreography is Supreme, though. As for the interview: Jean looks annoyed. It's not the first time there was a disturbance during an interview during a talk show interview. A live performance of "Tossin' and Turnin'". My heart melts. 😮 Mary rocked out. If only Lynda's mic were louder to mesh the harmony better, though. Great choreography. 👍👍 I noticed Jean took off the poncho thing for the second performance.
Hearing Jean Terrell sing the older hits live makes clear: she was in fact a better singer than Diana Ross. Ross had a slightly more unique voice, but a far weaker one outside the studio enhanced process.
Shame their medley was all the tripe they did with Motown's bike instead of their far superior 70s work and then picked the worst song from the brilliant Jimmy Webb produced album.
Mary should have been positioned as lead out of respect for the Legacy of the Supremes. We know she didn't have inside support. But win, or lose it would have been better to re-engineer a sound that suited her voice. Instead they tried to keep the formula with a femme fatale voiced lead, and that twisted the politics and perceptions all the way around. My opinion.
6:20 LOVE Jean and Lynda but this is blah. Even the chat section was missing that Ross glow. The two true talents were probably afraid to speak up too much with jealous and pursestring controller Mary sitting there. Her solo on Where Did Our Love Go ...😊 was pretty amateurish.l
Yeah, Mary could've done much better. But, then again, when you spent eight years only singing "baby, baby...ooooh, baby, baby", I guess it's easy to flub the actual lyrics.🤣
What a shame they would sing that song from that horrible album, "Miss the Man" would have been better, they also shouldn't have done that Medley of the "Diana" Supremes songs, maybe two, The Supremes with Jean by this time enough of their own catalog, Jean didn't sound like Diana so it was best to keep the separation.
I Guess I'll Miss the Man was a flop too, but I agree that Tossin' and Turnin' was a total waste of a national TV appearance. A&R at Motown really dropped the ball with the Supremes after 1971.
Someone else will explain who these gals really are. Definitely not the original Supremes. Duh! Probably a touring version that Berry Gordy sent out to publicize his roster. Interesting that Cavett went along with the ruse.
You need to educate yourself. Original lineup: Diana. Mary , Flo and Barbara 1961-1962 Classic lineup: Diana, Mary and Flo 1962-1967 Diana Ross and the Supremes: Diana, Mary and Cindy Birdsong 1967-1970 The Supremes: Mary, Cindy and Jean Terrell 1970-1972 Mary, Jean and Lynda Laurence 1972-1973 Mary, Cindy and Scherrie Payne 1973-1976 Mary, Scherrie and Susaye Green 1976-1977

Yeah that was really weird and is Mary drunk or high? But it's incredible footage JT is just fabulous
During the interview, Dick Cavetto said these ladies were the original Supremes. They are fantastic!
No he didn't. They spoke clearly about how Mary Wilson is the only original Supreme in this line up.
Jeanie……..
Well on the actual record Mary and Florence had lead parts in the recorded version
@@davonchesmith9688 The recorded version of what?
oh please that cape was everything
i do think mary dress ws best but her hair pony wasnt it, thats her real hair too.
🙏
Hearing Jean Terrell sing the older hits live makes clear: she was in fact a better singer than Diana Ross. Ross had a slightly more unique voice, but a far weaker one outside the studio enhanced process.
JEAN IS ETHEREAL. OTHERWORLDLY. BEYOND COMPARE.
I don't recognize the women with shoulder length heir
Shame their medley was all the tripe they did with Motown's bike instead of their far superior 70s work and then picked the worst song from the brilliant Jimmy Webb produced album.
Mary should have been positioned as lead out of respect for the Legacy of the Supremes. We know she didn't have inside support. But win, or lose it would have been better to re-engineer a sound that suited her voice. Instead they tried to keep the formula with a femme fatale voiced lead, and that twisted the politics and perceptions all the way around. My opinion.
Bad Weather had been a better choice.
6:20 LOVE Jean and Lynda but this is blah. Even the chat section was missing that Ross glow. The two true talents were probably afraid to speak up too much with jealous and pursestring controller Mary sitting there. Her solo on Where Did Our Love Go ...😊
was pretty amateurish.l
Haha kind of, she also appears kinda drunk
Yeah, Mary could've done much better. But, then again, when you spent eight years only singing "baby, baby...ooooh, baby, baby", I guess it's easy to flub the actual lyrics.🤣
They were singinghits from the Diana Ross led Supremes. So sad.
The Supremes continued as a unit after Ross left and had quite a few hits. It was no secret. Dig?
They spoke clearly about how Mary Wilson is the only original Supreme left in this line-up.
You need to educate yourself.
Original lineup: Diana. Mary , Flo and Barbara 1961-1962
Classic lineup: Diana, Mary and Flo 1962-1967
Diana Ross and the Supremes:
Diana, Mary and Cindy Birdsong 1967-1970
The Supremes: Mary, Cindy and Jean Terrell 1970-1972
Mary, Jean and Lynda Laurence 1972-1973
Mary, Cindy and Scherrie Payne 1973-1976
Mary, Scherrie and Susaye Green 1976-1977
YOU ARE INCREDIBLY WRONG. THESE ARE THE OFFICIAL SUPREMES. THESE ARE NO "TOURING VERSION" NOR WERE THEY A "RUSE". IT DOES NOT SOUND LIKE YOU WERE AROUND WHEN THIS MUSICAL HISTORY WAS MADE. THEY HAD NINE ALBUMS, SEVERAL GOLD RECORDS, ADDITIONAL SPIN OFF LPS, AND MAJOR TV AND CLUB APPEARANCES. A VERY BIG SHOW-BIZ DEAL WAS MADE WHEN DIANA LEFT THE GROUP AND THE GOLDEN-VOICED JEAN TERRELL CAME IN AS THE NEW LEAD SINGER. A LIVE DOUBLE LP WAS RELEASED CAPTURING THIS EVENT. JEAN REMAINED AS LEAD FOR NEARLY FOUR YEARS. Berry Gordy eventually became uneasy with the success of the new group as he feared it would eclipse Ross by taking record sales away from her. Hence, he eventually removed the best writers and musicians from the group and let them flounder. They were fantastic, but in the end this wonderful group was sabotaged.
Stone love, Up the ladder though the roof, Everybody's got the right to love, Shine on me, Nathan Jones, Floy Joy, This is the story, Touch, I guess I miss the Man. Songs without Diana Ross that were good IMO. Now that you're up to speed enjoy!
Weirdest interview ever.
Great Supremes' performance! Horrible show host. AND I'll leave it at that.
Tripe.
NO NO NO. NO Diana Ross, no Supremes.
Not true at all.but I agree Ross' versions are definitely better on the early hits
I agree they were so much better without her, they just didnt get the promotion and developement Diana got, but Jean was a far better vocalist
Some of us prefer the group without that talentless slapper.
NO DIANA NO SUPREMES...
Dreadful interviewer - embarrassing to watch.
No...
I honestly didn't care for the group after Diana left. I really didn't.
Too bad for you
These are not the Supremes 👎
Only to those who have an elementary education on the history of music.
They are The Supremes, post-Diana Ross. Ross left in 1970.
Yeah. They are. Ross left and they continued and had a fair amount of huge hits. See: Up the Ladder to the Roof
@@shyman99Boom! Agreed.
@@BrentWilkins7777And they were very good without Ross. They carried on and had some big hits.
God he was a rotten interviewer - excruciating to watch
That’s not the supremes.
And she sound awful...
