What I like about this line-up is that they showed their versatility in music and showed not only can they all sing lead , but that they are now very diverse in their styles of music and in singing. They gave you a variety and that's why I've enjoyed the 70's Supremes more (Mary, Scherrie, Cindy and Susaye)!!!
This was the best line up of Supremes all 3 women were able to sing, and boy did they sing to bad Motown did not see the big picture. But Mary had the brains to keep singing because today she has become a real Soul singer, and she put on a great show keep up the good work mary
The only BIG PICTURE Motown saw was one with Miss Ross and thats why the Supremes got left behind Buddah records the company that Gladys and the Pips left Motown for and had great success wanted the Supremes they couldn't leave for legal reasons
I have all the last three albums The Supreme made I didn't know until I saw this video all of them could sing lead. I'm stunned at some of the critics comments were so negative. I believe Mary Wilson, Scherrie Payne, and Susaye Greene are Superlative together. The vocals including all three of them is Phenomenal.
From 1975 to 1977 The Supremes recorded three albums that were really great. Their voices were very well showcased and so for me a fan, these albums are the greates vocally they have ever recorded. Scherrie Payne a great lead singer, but here Mary Wilson let herself go a little and Susaye Green was also wonderful with her high pitch octaves. Before The Supremes were showcasing Diana Ross, and even Jean Terrell, now is all three, showing their true talents, too bad they were not backed.
THE SUPREMES (Mary Wilson, Scherrie Payne, Susaye Greene) in every incarnation always kept with the times. Here delivering their Billboard Top # 40 Pop Chart / Billboard Top # 25 R&B Chart / Billboard Top # 1 Disco Chart "HIT" - "Im Gonna Let My Heart Do The Walking"!
What I also liked about this '70's set of Supremes(Mary, Scherrie, Cindy and Susaye) is that they were getting into wearing and styling their own hair instead of wearing wigs, wig pieces and extensions!!! Look at all the clips with this set/s on Soul Train, American Bandstand, Dinah Shore Show, Sammy Davis Jr. show, and the Mike Douglas show and you can actually see they are sporting their own crop of hair!!!
Yes that is so true Calvin and they looked even more beautiful, and this was the 70's where artist were still wearing wigs and falls, but these girls had hair and natural beauty and wanted to show it
FYI- edtdavis.....This gowns were created for The TV Special "On Broadway" with The Temptations, since the 1960's when Cindy Birdsong replaced Florence Ballard, their stage gowns were always refitted and back on the road!
These were the famous rhinestone black velvet gowns first used for the 1969 television special with the Temptations "On Broadway" and specially made for Diana Ross and the Supremes and later used in the Final Performance at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas in February 1970.
I wasn't paticularly thrilled with this line-up of Supremes. Yes, Scherrie and Susaye were great singers.....but, they just didn't do for me what the combo of Jean, Mary, and Cindy did for me. For me, the Supremes died after Jean left. For me, the "original" '70's Supremes ROCKED!
I'm also a bigger fan of the group with Jean Terrell. To me, Jean Terrell had an AMAZING VOICE, she was thee BEST frontman the Supremes had as far as her chops are concerned. I could do w/o Cindy Birdsong tho, she did her part in the background holding harmonies down, but she wasn't a strong lead singer or I.M.O., she wasn't a lead at all. She sever her purpose as Flo's stand in. Now, going back to Mary/Scherrie/Susaye, my only distinction is that, I'd have to give it to these 3 for all being able to lead, tho I'm not a Susaye Greene fan, I feel her voice wasn't suited for RnB music. She has quite thee operatic, theater type voice, so in RnB & even these disco songs, for me it comes across as over kill. 1 of the songs I LOVE to hear, is my ALL-TIME FAVORITE SONG by Mary Wilson, the slow jam, "Part of Me", Mary KILLED that & showed that she ain't come to play & that she had a voice too. R.I.PARADISE QUEEN SUPREME MARY WILSON, YOU'LL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN & I HATE THAT SHE COULDN'T BE SENT OFF THE WAY SHE DESERVED TO BE, BROKE ME HEART DOUBLE, ONCE 4 HER SUDDEN PASSING & LAST FOR HER NOT GETTING THE BIG,SUPREME SEND OFF SHE SO DESERVED, SMH.
I agree with you about Jean Terrell. Everything about her said ''SUPREMES''. She DEFINATELY had what it took to replace Diana Ross, and I believe that may have ''irked'' Ms. Ross to some degree. With Jean in the group, it was two Supremes backing up a third one, all three were on equal footing. Jean's voice just had that ''SUPREMES'' sound to it. It's just a shame she left the group so abruptly as she did, apparently she felt that she had to do what she had to do...
Miss Ross had no reason at any time to be irked by Jean Terrell. I love me some Jean Terrell point blank, but with Miss Ross solo career taking of in 1970 she had no time to be bothered with anything but her #1 hit Ain’t no mountain high enough and and her solo debut album and her solo tour to promote her hit album..
I felt like this grouping of Supremes just didn't mesh ... sounded like three singers doing their own thing instead of a group. The best post-Ross lineup was the first one with Jean, Mary and Cindy. They lost something after that. That said, the latter day albums aren't as bad as people make them out to be.
I could not disagree more. Their harmonies here and in other clips prove that their voices mesh very well together. If you are used to the 1960s production and style --- one lead singer and studio session singers dissolved deep in the background -- then perhaps the later 1970s Supremes would sound unusual. But as groups like Labelle were proving at the same time, three women with three different voices could both harmonize and stand out individually within a single song. Who says the last Supremes albums are "bad"? High Energy was a big seller -- in fact, it was their best selling album since the Jean Terrell days and a bigger seller than much of what was released during the DRATS period, 1967-70. Let's be honest. Much of what was released on Supremes albums in the 1960s is filler. Much of what was released on the last three Supremes studio albums is far from filler.
its all about the horn hook at 0:56 and 1:31 - the sound on this recording is no good tho - its missing midrange or something? sounds like it was recorded thru a wet paper bag from the next room
It's a shame that Motown did not do right by the Supremes after Miss Ross left both Jean Terrell and Sheri Payne could sing Miss Ross off the stage like they show biz is a dirty business!
at the beginning of the song mary should have said "if i finish first i'll meet you at the bus stop lol. singing a song with your back to the audience, iv never seen such a thing

This is a mess on so many levels. It shows why you need a lead so you dont have 3 voices running all over each other. The choreography is dreadful. The gowns were worn at the final show of the original Supremes.
First, other groups utilize more than one lead singer -- the Temptations and Labelle being examples of that time. While I was never a fan of the 70s Supremes wearing the old Supremes gowns, I understand why they did not trash them -- they cost tens of thousands of dollars and it wasn't the company who gifted the Supremes with them, it was each Supreme paying for them.
