Asking myself the question "If I spend all of my orbs on a banner today, and tomorrow I find out that Linhardt's getting a seasonal allt, how angry would I be with myself?" only comes up with one answer. Granted, I've also watched a lot of Fehtubers get absolutely bodied while trying to summon for something, and that's a good reality check, too.
Yes, agreed. Seeing other Fehtubers summon and spend a thousand orbs only to get, like, one copy of what they were after was part of what spurred me to save so much. Fingers crossed for a Lindhardt alt for you!! ❤
Not the typical feh video you see on RUclips. Really nice tips. I've slowly been raising my "do not go below" threshold too. It definitely gets easier to save the more you do it. I've also found that after a few days when a banner releases, when the hype has died, its so much easier to skip a banner. Something I like to use is the feh mailbox. I only keep orb amounts thay are 2+ in there, and empty it out after a year around CYL. It fills up slower, but it feels good to have a separate stash in case I need it.
It’s really interesting to see the mindset and strategies people have and use in this game not just for the gameplay, but for how they use their resources, too. I must say, you are by far one of the most disciplined, self controlled people I’ve seen play this game and what you say is true. Powercreep happens and it happens relatively quick in this game for sure so it’s always good to make note of what you spend your orbs on. Nice, 5k orbs is a ton of orbs. I have 583 orbs, which is a personal best for me. The most helpful thing I did is to join Gamefaqs The Hoarding message board and post my orb counts. The most helpful tip is when you get the daily rewards is to not immediately collect the orb rewards from the owl. Just leave it in the owl's stash. I collect the non-orb stuff, like feathers and dragonflowers, but not the orbs, unless there is a banner I want to summon on. Also, I don't summon on every banner anymore, especially on Legendary banners (8% rate is a lie). If I do, I'll take the free pull and immediately back out.
Congrats on reaching your personal best! ❤️ I know a lot of people have found that leaving orbs with the owl is helpful. I don't use that one myself, but I do leave a lot of incomplete content (like chain challenges) so I can always get those orbs later. ✌️

I just set my phone's wallpaper to Geitz(the one character I'm still waiting for) giving me a judgemental stare. It's like the Terry Crews wallet pic. Keeps me from unnecessarily spending and if I do give into impulse I gotta see him staring at me like a dumbass. Nowadays if I intentionally spend orbs it's on banners that have heroes/fodder for heroes I'm actively building(like the recent Ascended and Fallen ones) or the first circle on the end-of-month banners.
As for the point about just getting one copy of a hero you want, I made a Bingo card at the beginning of this year so unless one of them is on an upcoming banner then I try not to spend. If they are then I'll at least spark for them.
I already applied most of what you said, but stuff like asking yourself if you really are gonna use that unit is s good one and I'll apply it more often. The thing is, some of us like to always have meta relevant units. This is an issue that you touched upon by the end of your video. However, I do think FEH is more tame about powercreep than other games, considering you can deal with meta units using characters that are kinda old (1+ years old or so). Refines are another smart way IS has to counter powercreep. So yeah, I'd add one should consider if they have a game plan to deal with the meta and if that plan neccesarily requires you to roll for the newer legendaries or braves.
Btw, I have a hoard of 600 orbs. What has helped me out is to set thresholds for my spending. I have yet to clear most chain challenges and blessed gardens, but I don't know how I'll save after that, besides the occasional hero battle maps that come whenever they hold a legendary banner (it does suck that those maps do not refresh their rewards).
Framing the question of whether to spend on a competitive hero as "do I have a way to counter the current meta?" makes a lot of sense to me. I like that a lot. 👍 Congrats on your 600 orbs! Another thing which I do which you can try is that I don't complete the story and paralogue maps on normal and hard most of the time. Just leave them there and go and get them when you feel like you actually need them. 😃 I hope that helps!

However, I highly appreciate your feedback. It's funny because there are translation differences that make me wonder if the translation job's done directly from the japanese script, or if other countries translate from the english version of the game.
Im this way with every single resource OUTSIDE OF ORBS. For example….. I have 460 Trait fruits atm. 3 unused Ascended Trait Flowers, almost 10k in Grails, and >800k feathers. My issue doesnt rely on picking “favorites” or neccesarily “powercreep.” I come from Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia where Im able to see what characters are being released, seven whole months ahead of schedule. So its easy for me to skip. In Feh, we’re left clueless for who will get a banner (outside of CYL) and that makes me less prone to feel safe for letting characters go. Im also a sucker for Skills. And ever since Tier 4 skills were introduced, its starting to take more than one copy of a hero to fodder kits. Saying that out loud in the comments helps me identify that as a problem tho and going forward I can hold back on skills since “Compile” exists and its probably a bad thing to have so many resources outside of the 30 or so ORBS I have left lol. Building new units is still a tedious process for me imo.
Ah, the dreaded fear of missing out. And yeah, it's tough when skill inheritance is only limited to four. It'd be really nice if they'd increase it, but I have my doubts. Good luck with your saving in the future!
Found this in my recommended and will throw my hat in for how I saved orbs for a full year for OG Lilith and now saving Halloween Male Corrin and (hopefully) Anankos. How I personally did it was I just ignored every banner that came out and I hit 2,000 orbs when Lilith was announced to be coming on April 2020. Haven’t hit that number again since then but I’m at 928 orbs. (Oh yeah I have Fallen Lilith +10 as well if you were wondering.) Btw 5k orbs is INSANE and I admire your willpower.

I had 4000 orbs before the CYL banner. Spent 2500 and now back to ~2300 orbs now. My strategy has been to save to the yearly CYL banner or just to get some new Sacred Stone units once in a while.
I've played Fire Emblem Heroes for almost a year, and I never reached the thousand orb mark. Not only that, but there's a summoning focus featuring the OG F!Byleth coming up, and I wasted my orbs on the Legendary Robin banner.
What a self-control! Personally, I want to save orbs, but I keep spending them whenever there's New Heroes Banner, so I end up using them and ending up having no orbs. I usually, spend them at the very start of their run. But this year, I'll try to save orbs, and will stop spending orbs as much as possible (as well as grails). I'll just try to use my favorites to avoid that. Thank you for sharing your experience!😁 I also want to save for future heroes. Personally, I want FE7 heroes like Harken and Dart. Hopefully, they come in FEH, (I personally want them to be GH for accessible heroes but... Who knows? I'll just start saving from now on.
Pretty nice video, I’m a mid competitive player who’s been constantly bleeding orbs and I’ll definitely consider the threshold tip. Start it small, work up, like, an emergency spark stash or something, and just keep at it. Speaking of competitive, I think better questions to ask are how much the unit is actually required. Embla breaks the save meta for example, but defense doesn’t matter as much as offense in AR. I find myself making excuses to summon for something strong, but end up regretting it sometimes because I’m kinda… fine? As in they don’t really help me get more rewards as much as legendaries and offense mythics would. I was basically paying for convenience that I wasn’t even putting to full use. Anyway, congrats on the 5K orbs! I commend your self-control and I hope to practice your tips well. I gotta simmer down on the competitive side and just chill since I can’t make any actual progress right now without the perfect L/M banner and a mountain of orbs.
Yes, that all makes a lot of sense. IS really likes to throw shiny new heroes at us with exciting abilities, so it can be tough to resist, even if it isn't something we need. Best of luck to you with your own orb saving! Honestly, once you get in the habit of skipping banners, it gets easier over time. 😃
I'm a saver (currently above 1.1k) but I try to split between meta and favorites. A good rule that resonated is that for favorites, I only feel the need to +10 one version of them (having multiple versions doesn't do much for me) and it generally leaves me enough to go all out on a mythic banner or AHR to keep up with the meta So now I'm saving til AHR, with the only things stopping me being an askr spark on his rerun, if Lucia ever gets in the game, or possibly legendary Elincia
My strategy initially was to save up to get +10 legendary (and later mythic) units - since those are needed for scoring. I spent heavy on Naga's debut banner, then nothing till LCorrins debut, then nothing till the Eitri/Thorr debut. Since then, I've had 2 +10 mythics for light and astra, and one each for earth, fire and wind. I've been less stingy since then, but never go past the spark unless I want to (eventually) +10 a unit. That means I normally save 2-400 orbs a month, and I normally plan a months in advance where I will spend heavy - either on a dsh banner if I've really used a seasonal unit a lot (hello DChrom and DDagr), or a legendary banner which will have 3 great units - like Veronica+Embla+Nanna. (Though my luck sucked and after 2k orbs no one was even close to +10, and Nanna was only at +2, so I quit). I currently have 1700 orbs and am saving for AHR, but will spark for copies of Veronica.
I saved up up to 2280 orbs for years now for when the time comes we get a BK alt, we just got W!BK and I knew this was my moment to shine... only got 2 copies of him including the free one from sparking. I guess I'm waiting for a Special Double Heroes banner or a re-run or something now
i wish i had this amount of self control lmao, i told myself i wouldn't spend orbs on any banner until Ranulf gets an alt but it is incredibly hard cuz my monkey brain sees a character that looks cool but I will never use nor will i fodder them and i just keep spending my orbs 😅 wish me luck though, he probably won't get an alt for a while so I'll have many chances to impulse spend :/ (hearing you mention both Ranulf and L'Arachel [though her alt was fairly recent] made me so happy, glad I'm not alone. I'm also waiting for Owain but he got one last year so I assume he won't get another for a while) Matthew deserves an alt!! I play this game very casually, I just like using favorite characters lmao. Right now I have somewhere around 225 orbs saved up, L! Claude and C! Hilda took about 100 of my orbs the other day. But I would like to know something. Is merging the best way to make your units stronger? Or is there another way that doesn't require orbs?
Merging is definitely a good way to make your heroes stronger. You can also give them dragonflowers, but those take a long time to save up, unfortunately.
I have one that's probably a semi-useless method, but for banners that have tickets, I've learned to try to snipe a particular color with tickets. So say you start off with the free pull + tickets, I use minimum amount of orbs possible by hoping for a particular color and if I'm REALLY lucky, I can get we'll say all green for Beast N Trace fodder off the current banner and spend 20 orbs on all 5 green. Otherwise, I only pick on the greens that do show up in that rotation and skip the rest. This way, I'm spending only the 4 orbs per pull rather than going all the way to 40. The only draw back to this is some banners I'll get to 20 and start wondering if it's just worth sparking at that point. Essentially maximize potential while minimizing spending on something I want for fodder or chance at +10 merges. Other times if I think the ENTIRE banner is worth it just to get copies for +10 in my roster, I'll do the full rotation every time no matter what so I'm spending only 155 and no more than, though this is a very rare occurrence.
Also note, that's for banners like the revival new years beast where I got lucky and got 1 copy of Daugr + Nott and a copy of + Spd iv Lyre even though sadly there's no spark. I only ended up spending 12 orbs though, so I'm content and thankfully there were 10 tickets II's.
As much as I want to use this advice, I really have no self control for personal spending. I'm getting better at it, but it boils down to wanting to make more content for my channel: I have barely any +10 units; maybe less than a dozen +5 units, but I always feel like all the units are worth summoning. If we could use the crystals/ shards for this instead, then I might be able to start saving, but I've never enjoyed getting left behind on anything. I am trying to stop spending on the game, with only having the FEHPass, but gacha games are hard to remove the addiction once you've started. Also, as a side note, based on the fact that IS is putting more focus into characters not yet in FEH, in addition to the MCs or MSCs, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't get a Matthew/Raven/Serra/Hawkeye/Priscilla/Karel.... alt for another year or 2 (all of these characters have gone at least 6 years without an alt).
I know that's a very real possibility... I have some likely futile hope that maybe they'll rerun the Thief theme from last year and will give Matthew the alt he deserves. But we'll have to see. Good luck if you fo decide to start saving! I know it's tough, especially when trying to make content.

Wow... I'm the complete opposit. xD I'm relatively new to the game, and so far, I spend orbs once on almost every new banners that comes out, to profit from the first free summoning. So I collect like 15 orbs a day, and spend them right away. I don't mind being broke, because getting new orbs is still pretty easy at this point of the game. And I have this mindset of "I'll take what I get. If it's a character I like, great, but if I don't get them, then so be it". I also wanna try out new characters I don't know, who I wouldn't have summoned otherwise. But yeah, I should probably save at least a little bit, if a character appears I really really want.^^
Spending and saving are both valid ways to play. I just want to give some tips for anyone who wants to start saving. Nothing wrong with spending orbs, though. ^^
If you're never summoning, then how do you keep up with the meta in competitive game modes like Summoner Duels and Aether Raids. I feel like if I don't use any of the newer units I just get stomped.
I don't play Summoner Duels at all, honestly. Since it's played in real time, I feel like I have to cut out specific time just for Summoner Duels, which I'd rather not deal with. I used to play Aether Raids, but I got bored of it after a while, and now I generally just use the auto dispatch feature. When I did play it, I just used my favorites and made due with what I had. I do sometimes summon for fodder so I can at least keep my favorite characters updated with the latest and most powerful skills. So it's not like I never summon--just very sparingly. :P Arena is the only competitive mode which I actively play, but even there, it's not a big priority of mine. I totally get how people want to build the strongest heroes and compete with them, but I only have fun if I'm using my favorites, so I prioritize that over achievement in the competitive game modes.
Having multiple 5* exclusive merge projects isn’t helping me. I did manage to get to 700 orbs! I’m now down to 100 again… a character I liked was on a banner.. and then another one and another one.

I'm shocked neither of them have any alts. I honestly though matthew and donnel were more popular than that. they were both some of my favorite characters and units for their respective games.

I had 4000 orbs before the CYL banner. Spent 2500 and now back to ~2300 orbs now. My strategy has been to save to the yearly CYL banner or just to get some new Sacred Stone units once in a while.

I've played Fire Emblem Heroes for almost a year, and I never reached the thousand orb mark. Not only that, but there's a summoning focus featuring the OG F!Byleth coming up, and I wasted my orbs on the Legendary Robin banner.
What a self-control! Personally, I want to save orbs, but I keep spending them whenever there's New Heroes Banner, so I end up using them and ending up having no orbs. I usually, spend them at the very start of their run. But this year, I'll try to save orbs, and will stop spending orbs as much as possible (as well as grails). I'll just try to use my favorites to avoid that. Thank you for sharing your experience!😁
I also want to save for future heroes. Personally, I want FE7 heroes like Harken and Dart. Hopefully, they come in FEH, (I personally want them to be GH for accessible heroes but... Who knows? I'll just start saving from now on.

Pretty nice video, I’m a mid competitive player who’s been constantly bleeding orbs and I’ll definitely consider the threshold tip. Start it small, work up, like, an emergency spark stash or something, and just keep at it.
Speaking of competitive, I think better questions to ask are how much the unit is actually required.
Embla breaks the save meta for example, but defense doesn’t matter as much as offense in AR. I find myself making excuses to summon for something strong, but end up regretting it sometimes because I’m kinda… fine? As in they don’t really help me get more rewards as much as legendaries and offense mythics would. I was basically paying for convenience that I wasn’t even putting to full use.
Anyway, congrats on the 5K orbs! I commend your self-control and I hope to practice your tips well. I gotta simmer down on the competitive side and just chill since I can’t make any actual progress right now without the perfect L/M banner and a mountain of orbs.
Yes, that all makes a lot of sense. IS really likes to throw shiny new heroes at us with exciting abilities, so it can be tough to resist, even if it isn't something we need.

I'm a saver (currently above 1.1k) but I try to split between meta and favorites. A good rule that resonated is that for favorites, I only feel the need to +10 one version of them (having multiple versions doesn't do much for me) and it generally leaves me enough to go all out on a mythic banner or AHR to keep up with the meta
So now I'm saving til AHR, with the only things stopping me being an askr spark on his rerun, if Lucia ever gets in the game, or possibly legendary Elincia
My strategy initially was to save up to get +10 legendary (and later mythic) units - since those are needed for scoring. I spent heavy on Naga's debut banner, then nothing till LCorrins debut, then nothing till the Eitri/Thorr debut.
Since then, I've had 2 +10 mythics for light and astra, and one each for earth, fire and wind. I've been less stingy since then, but never go past the spark unless I want to (eventually) +10 a unit. That means I normally save 2-400 orbs a month, and I normally plan a months in advance where I will spend heavy - either on a dsh banner if I've really used a seasonal unit a lot (hello DChrom and DDagr), or a legendary banner which will have 3 great units - like Veronica+Embla+Nanna. (Though my luck sucked and after 2k orbs no one was even close to +10, and Nanna was only at +2, so I quit). I currently have 1700 orbs and am saving for AHR, but will spark for copies of Veronica.
I saved up up to 2280 orbs for years now for when the time comes we get a BK alt, we just got W!BK and I knew this was my moment to shine... only got 2 copies of him including the free one from sparking. I guess I'm waiting for a Special Double Heroes banner or a re-run or something now

i wish i had this amount of self control lmao, i told myself i wouldn't spend orbs on any banner until Ranulf gets an alt but it is incredibly hard cuz my monkey brain sees a character that looks cool but I will never use nor will i fodder them and i just keep spending my orbs 😅 wish me luck though, he probably won't get an alt for a while so I'll have many chances to impulse spend :/
(hearing you mention both Ranulf and L'Arachel [though her alt was fairly recent] made me so happy, glad I'm not alone. I'm also waiting for Owain but he got one last year so I assume he won't get another for a while)

I play this game very casually, I just like using favorite characters lmao. Right now I have somewhere around 225 orbs saved up, L! Claude and C! Hilda took about 100 of my orbs the other day. But I would like to know something. Is merging the best way to make your units stronger? Or is there another way that doesn't require orbs?
Merging is definitely a good way to make your heroes stronger. You can also give them dragonflowers, but those take a long time to save up, unfortunately.
@@geminithespy9882 yeah that's what I figured. It's just crazy how impossible the lvl 40+ maps are.
I have one that's probably a semi-useless method, but for banners that have tickets, I've learned to try to snipe a particular color with tickets. So say you start off with the free pull + tickets, I use minimum amount of orbs possible by hoping for a particular color and if I'm REALLY lucky, I can get we'll say all green for Beast N Trace fodder off the current banner and spend 20 orbs on all 5 green. Otherwise, I only pick on the greens that do show up in that rotation and skip the rest. This way, I'm spending only the 4 orbs per pull rather than going all the way to 40. The only draw back to this is some banners I'll get to 20 and start wondering if it's just worth sparking at that point. Essentially maximize potential while minimizing spending on something I want for fodder or chance at +10 merges. Other times if I think the ENTIRE banner is worth it just to get copies for +10 in my roster, I'll do the full rotation every time no matter what so I'm spending only 155 and no more than, though this is a very rare occurrence.
Also note, that's for banners like the revival new years beast where I got lucky and got 1 copy of Daugr + Nott and a copy of + Spd iv Lyre even though sadly there's no spark. I only ended up spending 12 orbs though, so I'm content and thankfully there were 10 tickets II's.
As much as I want to use this advice, I really have no self control for personal spending. I'm getting better at it, but it boils down to wanting to make more content for my channel: I have barely any +10 units; maybe less than a dozen +5 units, but I always feel like all the units are worth summoning. If we could use the crystals/ shards for this instead, then I might be able to start saving, but I've never enjoyed getting left behind on anything. I am trying to stop spending on the game, with only having the FEHPass, but gacha games are hard to remove the addiction once you've started.
Also, as a side note, based on the fact that IS is putting more focus into characters not yet in FEH, in addition to the MCs or MSCs, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't get a Matthew/Raven/Serra/Hawkeye/Priscilla/Karel.... alt for another year or 2 (all of these characters have gone at least 6 years without an alt).
I know that's a very real possibility... I have some likely futile hope that maybe they'll rerun the Thief theme from last year and will give Matthew the alt he deserves. But we'll have to see.

Wow... I'm the complete opposit. xD I'm relatively new to the game, and so far, I spend orbs once on almost every new banners that comes out, to profit from the first free summoning. So I collect like 15 orbs a day, and spend them right away. I don't mind being broke, because getting new orbs is still pretty easy at this point of the game. And I have this mindset of "I'll take what I get. If it's a character I like, great, but if I don't get them, then so be it". I also wanna try out new characters I don't know, who I wouldn't have summoned otherwise. But yeah, I should probably save at least a little bit, if a character appears I really really want.^^
Spending and saving are both valid ways to play. I just want to give some tips for anyone who wants to start saving. Nothing wrong with spending orbs, though. ^^
If you're never summoning, then how do you keep up with the meta in competitive game modes like Summoner Duels and Aether Raids. I feel like if I don't use any of the newer units I just get stomped.
I don't play Summoner Duels at all, honestly. Since it's played in real time, I feel like I have to cut out specific time just for Summoner Duels, which I'd rather not deal with. I used to play Aether Raids, but I got bored of it after a while, and now I generally just use the auto dispatch feature. When I did play it, I just used my favorites and made due with what I had. I do sometimes summon for fodder so I can at least keep my favorite characters updated with the latest and most powerful skills. So it's not like I never summon--just very sparingly. :P
Arena is the only competitive mode which I actively play, but even there, it's not a big priority of mine. I totally get how people want to build the strongest heroes and compete with them, but I only have fun if I'm using my favorites, so I prioritize that over achievement in the competitive game modes.

I am still waiting for a Gaius and Lysithea Harmonized Hero because sadly Lysithea is with Lute not Gaius.

Having multiple 5* exclusive merge projects isn’t helping me. I did manage to get to 700 orbs! I’m now down to 100 again… a character I liked was on a banner.. and then another one and another one.
It's so hard when they throw a bunch of favorites as us in a row. ❤ Proud of you for saving so much, though.

I'm shocked neither of them have any alts. I honestly though matthew and donnel were more popular than that. they were both some of my favorite characters and units for their respective games.
1-2k orb in preserve is consider good balance for any favorite project, too much saving for nothing so abit silly imo
