This is a topic I've received a lot of requests to make, so hopefully this will be helpful for those who want to save orbs and are struggling to do so. To be clear, this is not the only way or my prescribed "best way," but it is how I personally see orb saving in the game and how I started saving. I recognize this might not be fun for a lot of people, but hopefully it is still helpful. Ultimately I hope people have fun playing how they want to play and if this helps maximize their enjoyment and experience, than that is good!

What projects are you hoping to save for?
I had a lot of request to make this, but I wanted to share how I started saving orbs! This strategy and tips is just one out of many and I do recognize it might not be fun for a lot of players, but for those looking to save and struggling to do so, hopefully it still helps!
To be honest. My end goal for this year is at least a +5 Winter Altina. Other than that I have no other goals in sight
I want to get all the feh oc's
Just a simple one, +10 Neimi and waiting for her alt. Anything can happen
+10 every female Morgan
Simple, +10 Chrobin or a male duo unit.
This is why I'm usually 1,000 orbs, I focus only AR which only requires one mythic copy and no merges. Plus getting one copy of my first favorite character from FE games, Micaiah. It's so easy to save when you just get a goal and min-max.
Likewise! Yeah having a goal and something to drive you really does make saving easier!

Now has +4 Nanna and enough Vital Astra to weaponize 2 small Armys

Great video! Even though I have heard most of this before, it's a nice reminder to keep me on the straight and narrow. Every year around CYL time I always get hyped from the community vids/pulls and I always empty my savings, just to regret it later 😥. Thanks for the reminder this year before the banner drops. This is eight months old but I really needed this video. I made a new account about a month ago after being away for 4+ years and being put off by the power creep in Summoner Duels, which is my favorite mode (in concept). I have a much more modern barracks but I still feel tempted to keep up with the meta. Hearing you say that I don't need to meta chase has sort of cleared my head. I definitely have favorite characters that I just want to make work (like Brave Marth) instead of chasing the meta.
Still tough to not just say screw it and get a new meta unit though. Getting railed by Brave Seliphs, Brave Chroms, and L!Nannas can be super demoralizing.
Really great video DTM, I agreed with a lot of your points. Saving for a specific goal is the best take away for anyone to hear.
I myself am currently saving a ton of orbs for any Azura, Sakura, or Elise alts. What helps is it's on a device that's sharing my account so I can still do my video's while still saving as many orbs as I can. That may contradict some of what you said, but it's how I'm playing right now and that's a-okay with me. 💙

Awesome video. I've never considered this before. I've probably only ever been able to save to about 400 orbs, but after this CYL expires I will definitely only spend on offensive mythics to improve my lift.
I would recommend playing previous fire emblem games if you do not have a favorite character yet. That helped me find who I wanted to save for. 👌🏾 this video was awesome!
Though I have been saving orbs for quite some time, this may prove useful in my ultimate goal to one day +10 every Eirika. For now, my focus will be to max out Winter Eirika, hopefully by the end of the year.

Really nice video, agree with everything you said. It is basically how I got 11 5 star exclusive +10s as F2P. Interesting that you had to repeat the disclaimer so many times, as many just get offended when your playstyle doesn’t match theirs. Stay strong and keep going!
I am about to finish my 5th year of playing FEH in December, hoping to complete 2-3 more 5 stars before that: +8 Legendary Xanderl (September)/+9 Eitri (October)/+7 Legendary Eliwood (November remix).
Right now, my biggest barrier to saving is summoning within the 1st few days because I get wrapped up in the hype. Hopefully it will get easier in time! Great tips, especially toward the end!

Now i'm saving for +10 base Dorothea when she arrives, I already have her summer version +10 and her harmonic also +10 with a lot of effort and savings. I also hope to +10 all versions of Edelgard and Eliwood in the future 🥺

I’ve been working on more focused goals for a couple years ago.
Managed to +10 Hardin and I’ve been trying to get all Archanean units, but may not go for seasonal to save orbs.
My current goal is Medeus, but I had terrible luck last banner with only 1 Medeus and the spark in 600+ orbs…
great video and a good reminder to myself to stay critical every time a new banner drops cause people like to hype stuff but in the end they are shiny new toys and don't actually need them unless my favourite is in there.
I pull for favourite characters. I came to this conclusion recently, goals can change as you mentioned in this video. at first I wanted to get into competitive play and going for legendary and mythic merges, but seeing how volatile and a pain in the butt legendary banners are I gave up on that goal. I said "screw it, I'm done with those banners, focus on passion projects". I pulled only once for fodder for Julius (one of my favourites) and it was worth it! he's putting in a lot of work. it's so satisfying using favourites in competitive modes.
When I heard you ask "what are your goals?", I thought that I really don't have any goals in FEH, but then I remembered: 100% complete Hero Encyclopedia. I am in some ways a hoarder, and this is especially true in any kind of game: a lot of times in TCGs, I save cards for something i am looking for, only to have the price on the card drop significantly due to a reprint; gacha games are the same - I don't really care much about the meta (always changing, so following that is a lot harder to do in general), don't care much about +10'ing units (too many resources needed for doing so with no real way make it easy for the first portion), and I don't really have any favorite units in general (closest thing is a "no character should go without an alt" mentality).
Despite being a high ranked VoH player myself, I find it a lot more fun hording orbs to +10 favorites than pulling for the latest meta units.
I don't have an active merge project atm, yet I'm saving up for a 3 Hopes Marianne so I could +10 her and use her to reach top rank in AR and vanilla SD, just like how I did with all my Marianne alts.

My goal has always been to be able to ruin people's day in AR, so getting units that allow me to strengthen the weird niche comps I use (which occasionally includes skills, such as Atk/Spd Oath 4 freeing up my D!Dagr's seal slot for QP so she can have a pre-charged Deadeye) is always what I aim to do. And fortunately, it's very rare for skills or units that support my goals to be released, so unless I get hit with a bunch of consecutive banners where the stars align, saving works pretty well.
the only time I go out of my way to summon off goals is... Mythic, and when I find something unique looks extremely different and useful... H!Azura, D!Chrom, summer edelgard and S!micaiah were some units that baited me this year... I really loved how they felt really useful vs the FarSave meta that's plaguing AR.
right now im focusing on A!Idunn, Eitri, and LMyrh... DC opened the door for dragons and I am all for it!! and whichever FCorin comes along! Simp here!! plz CYL7!!

For the majority of the banners, I primarily use the free summons. Only when I needed hardy fighter in this hero fest, for L!Tiki, or for less than 50 orbs for duo chrom, did I summon as a dedicated madlad. Only the Real Demon King Formitis gets my orbs. I started playing this game from the Bridal banner which featured Lilina. So, in total I spent like 400 orbs till now.
Hopefuly Formitis gets in as a mythic soon!

My Goal is to +10 every version of Rhea
Great vid! Is there a way to get more blessings in the game? Since I dont have that many good performing units in my barracs I end up re blessing some on each season change and my blessing numbers are coming down hard...
My problem is that there are a lot of units I like and want to summon/build. I've summoned almost nonstop since getting the game in May and my only regrets are 1.) Sparking Ymir instead of A!Celica because people on Reddit kept saying Ymir would be OP, and 2.) Having so many units I like that I don't use all of them. Now I'm running out of story orbs so I'll be forced to save anyway.
Using the summon simulator is really good to see the terrible odds of actually summoning units and that makes me review my merge projects and really prioritize better.

My goal right now is to have every mythic dancer at+10, so i'm saving for Plumeria and Mira, they will be sharing color on october's banner 😊
I'm saving at least merges for +10 Neimi because she was my favorite character in FE8 and she does really well than I expected. Hoping for an alt maybe Valentines Neimi or something idk
after i got Duo Dagr and Duo Chrom at their debut banner, i started making goal that i will summon unit who I REALLY NEED IT for me...doesn't care for meta or whatsoever, just saving and summon if i REALLY WANT that unit :)
That's a good way to think for FEH!
For me it helps to look at the banners and think of the following things: Does it add anything that I would enjoy, and in case of a legendary/mythic banner, do I mind getting any of the other heroes? Do I need any of them as fodder for one of the different Leif alts? Are there things happening in the future that I'd rather have? Is there a new Leif, Roy, Seliph, Mareeta, Sigurd alt coming that I'd love to have. My coming goal is +10 merging my L!Leif, since it's confirmed that he's gonna get a remix, he's my fav hero (he's the closest to my OC I can ever get in FEH) and shoot for him on the remix banner, since that features the spark for me, and there are only 2 heroes per colour, instead of 3.
Oof I am so guilty of falling for a lot of gambling tactics you pointed out (hype, baited by sparks, etc.) I pull way too often even though I'm not even too competitive. The gacha itch is too strong.
Right now I'm saving for (1) hopefully a +10 L!Edelgard from her remix, (2) +10 any other Edelgard besides Flamey or at least deck out Academy Edelgard, (3) a potential Hopes Edelgard alt. I'll also try to pull for other potential Black Eagles alts but those are my priorities rn.

I broke my hard limit while trying to +10 A!Laegjarn after getting a +10 A!Fjorm (plus 3 after that)... Honestly i'm kinda tired because after +9 Laegjarn i couldn't get the last one after +250 orbs, i will try until the end of the banner, after that i will stick to these guidelines doesn't matter if i +10 her or not after that
My only goals in FEH are getting some waifus and units that help my few teams. Its hard with just those 2 goals because of how vague it is. So i think just waifus will have to do it for me because i dont care much about meta despite my second most wanted unit, Hataria Azura being each of those. Maybe only rolling on banners where sparking is possible could be another goal because it can save you orbs
After my project of +10 Fjorm, I'm not saving much orbs. Sometimes summon for skill improvement.
But, almost every map is available for me to farm, I'm kinda stop playing since end of book 4. So every map still there.

this has worked for me, I am now at a good amount of Orbs to get Hatari Karla merges for when she comes back. Now if only IS would stop giving me waifu banners that make me want to summon.

For me, the reason I play feh is to give me good headcanons for a potential yaoi fanfic and also collect my favorites.
Since IS is known for shafting male characters, so I'm pretty much fine with and I pull when I pull. Not really a very meta player, I'm just a casual play who plays for fun.
I saved 450 orbs, but there will all be gone soon. My most investet unit is legendary corrin (+7) and she is on the next legendary/mythic banner. If a cyl unit is SUPER unique i maybe summon. And even if orbs survive i will spent them on the weekly revival with ophilia and tibarn in September because both of them are one of my favorite Charakters in fe.

Should i not summon for heavy blade 4 fodder then to give my muarim? I was really excited to give him that skill and he's gonna be +10 soon!
I'm not one to summon whether or not you should have done something, but my personal view is to always make do with what you have. Definitely don't feel bad about what I value though. Muarim is an amazing unit to +10!

My goal is getting every ability possible to my Lute so... Saving is almost impossible

My set up since sparking game to new Hero Banners my way of handling orbs remains the same.
Never summon on non sparkable banners unless it's an absolute favorite character.
Never aim for merges unless merges are gained during a spark or by a spark.
Goal is always units I actually like. I want to collect all my favorites and every canon queer character possible. I also wanna get whatever FF duo/Harms I can get.
Also FEH pass is not worth it in my eyea as a constant thing. It's only ever been worth it for me to spark Summer Edelgard because Edelgard is a major favorite.
My goals are to max merge all versions of Micaiah and max merge good versions of Edelgard. My competitive goals is to get top 1k in AR O but unfortunately I don't have the merges to do so. My other goal is to stay in top 1k in AA but I need more legendary hero merges. My other goal is to stay top 1k in SDS and SDR which I can do easily even before I got hardy fighter far save so I don't agree with your advice at least in my case. I don't aim for tier 21 arena or resonant battles but do think it is worthwhile to stay at least in tier 20. I also want one copy of each mythic to make things easy in AR O and AR D.
When it comes to changing your goals, I think downsizing maximalist goals is better than adding new goals. For example, despite wanting to +10 all versions of Micaiah, I have given up on Bridal Micaiah because she's only at +1, I barely use her and she is hard to merge in a banner that reruns once a year and is not worthwhile to spend orbs on. I did try a lot to get merges on her spending many hundreds of orbs but I have failed in that endeavor. I will wait until she is put on the SHSR banner.
After cyl I'm gonna save only for a!idunn she's gonna enter the rerun voting so I feel like she's gonna win at some point I mean it's bector 2.0 I can't see her never winning I got her and the og version hardy from the hero fest only far save is missing
Yeah A!Idunn is an extremely powerful Far Save unit!
It's much easier to save if your tastes don't align with those of IS. On the list of my about 50 favourite characters only 7 (Henry, Cordelia, Rinkah, Berkut, Nephenee, Minerva and Owain) have more than 1 version, the rest have just one or aren't in the game at all.
Unless the odds are good and there's a character i'm even remotely interested in i just summon once and ignore the event. And at the end of the day i'm playing casually. I don't care about being competetive in AR or Arena. Seeing Arval i got from some banner go brrr is enough to make me happy. And to be fair fallen Rhea i got as random 5* summon made me pay even less attention seeing how she can solo most special maps.
Honestly my primary goal for FEH is to snag every form of Tiki possible (Naga and Nagi are included), and my secondary goal is to make them all viable someway
My main issue is generally just how often the Tikis get rerun especially the Summer ones where I have to save so many orbs. I’m close to my goal though as I have +2 on 3 of my Tikis and +10 on Adult Tiki. I’m only missing Young Tiki and Halloween Tiki
My issue with orbs in general is that
Don't get it twisted keep summoning you WILL hit it big and get the unite
One time I saved 800+ orbs to +10 my Ninian but ever since then I haven't saved more than 400 orbs at a time, probably because I didn't care much for merge projects after that and those that I had appeared in banners every once in a while so my orbs were gone then.
The only merge project I have now is Ash but I was very lucky and she's +6/+7 already so it's not like I have to save that many orbs. And it's not like it's a guarantee that her FB banner revival will win.
Yeah I do hope Ash's banner wins at some point, but it is looking unlikely.

My criteria:
- should be sparkable
- should contain a hero I'm building
However, sparkables are varying in cost. Forging Bonds Banners is 135 obs for sparkable (because of free summoning tickets). The anniversary banner was 120 for sparkable (plus 4 free summons). Legendary, TT, and others are 155. Only doing the cheap sparkables is a way to save orbs as well.
If the banner is not sparkable, dont summon. If the banner is only new heroes (usually seasonal), skip it. If a legendary banner doesn't contain a project-hero, I will skip.
How to save orbs : dont spend them
How to save orbs:
Just don't summon.
