  • Užgavėnės - the festival to end winter in Lithuania. It's a massive outdoor party of devils, witches, beggars, beasts and monsters!
This was filmed in Rumšiškės, on February 26, 2022, one of the few Užgavėnės parties that weren't cancelled because of the general mood because of Ukraine.
Although I don't agree with cancelling this feast in other cities (including Vilnius) I think its ideology fits perfectly with what's going on right now. Užgavėnės is not only meant to have fun and scare the winter, but at the same time burning Morė means getting rid of all the bad that's going on, including a war.

I wish we had such rich cultural traditions in the Netherlands. Over here it's sadly all commercialised. Please cherish and be proud of your cultural heritage!

Well done, thanks for your video. It was very informative. My kids watched it and loved it… ( I didn’t need to translate):)

What a lovely festival. In the Czech Republic we also have a very similar one called "Masopust" and we also burn a witch to get rid of winter, but those two events aren't happening on the same day. I'm also from a city with a huge open air museum, so a visit to Rumšiškės was necessary when I studied in Lithuania.
    Good memories.

Love this! I came across this while researching goats and I'm left wondering why we did not celebrate this as children. My grandfather and aunt were from Lithiania and we always celebreated traditional Lithuanian Christmas eve and Easter as children. I feel ripped off that we weren't doing this as well!

It's still great when you're grown up, or maybe even more fun? 😁 This festival is not made for kids as Halloween is when celebrated at larger gatherings. If you have a chance sometime, definitely participate!

I hate how they allow us to burn a scarecrow thing called "Morė", but they are mad when we go around trick or treating.
