I have a 1648 the first thing I did was move the seat . Steering from the center isn't comfortable at all. I put a Suzuki 30hp with a 10" pitch prop. It does fine with 3 200lb people in it.
Drilled 5 holes one for the post, 4 for the screws and used jb weld marine sandwiched down when I put the screws in. Its been about 3 years with no issues.
It handles very well. If it’s 1 ft+ waves you’ll get sprayed but will get back safely. If your looking at the grizzly 1548 they are great boats but the power rating is low on them in rough seas (25 hp) it all depends how fast you want to go though. I wish I had a 40 hp on mine personally but I’m also traveling 10-15 to some fishing spots
It would probably be fine with a 30 HP Yamaha the good news is it’s plenty of power to start with and later if you decide to go bigger you probably can
Did you have to modify the transom to get the merc to fit. I had issued with my merc angling in and not wanting t go up on plane. Also my transom is 18 inches. Is that the same on the 1548. I have the 1448.
I did not have to make any modifications for the engine to fit. I do know that the engine on mine is the longer driveshaft I’m not sure on the exact link but it came from the factory as such I believe the transom may be a little taller on it than the 1448 but I’m not 100% sure
Cavitation plate should line up with bottom of the stern. Plus or minius an inch, or so is no big deal. Long shaft could need s jack k plate to line up correctly. I own a 2018 1448 mxv owner with e tec 25hp short shaft. Boat will go 28mph with two 240 pounds dudes. Alone it would go over 30mph
Question. Is your motor sitting all the way down on the transom? The reason I'm asking is mine is mounted through the 1st holes and can drop down about 3", and at 3/4 throttle at almost planning it's like my prop is slipping and not pushing, and revving. Thanks

Thank you so much for the review! Subbed! I am researching my first boat and have my eyes on the 1648 grizzly jon exactly because of the improved control like you mentioned with the modV . And with a 20hp for inshore marshland area south Carolina 🤘 I figure it's enough to fight the currents and the extra length/width of the boat may help in the chop too! Slightly concerned about the planing at 20hp but i hear a longer boat will plane slightly easier? (and the 16 jon is 50 lb lighter than 15 sport) Cheers thanks again!
Take a look at the factory tag in the boat and check for the maximum horsepower the boat is rated for. The rule of thumb is to buy at least 3/4 of the maximum hp. A boat that won’t plane with 2 people is a real bummer.
Is there any chance you could try to pole the boat? I love to fish flats and need to sneak around a lot. I’m just curious if I can treat it like a skiff and put a poling platform on it. Will it track a straight line?
I've never poled a boat before but this boat does track pretty straight. The only concern is that there is already a lot of weight in the rear and I am not sure the additional weight of a poling platform would affect the handling. Sorry for the late reply, YT is not making me aware of new comments for some reason.
Are the "steps" on your transom actually boat SPONSONS? Hollow boxes welded on the transom to provide extra lift? I have read that the small ones provide 118 pounds of lift. Yours appear to be medium large. Anyway, they are a great addition to the heavy weight of most heavy 4 strokes. Safe boating sir.
I think the HP rating is very conservative for that boat. I had a 16ft.tracker that was rated for a 40hp and it wasn’t as heavy built as yours. A 25-30 hp 2-stroke would make a world of difference. Small 4-strokes aren’t known for their holeshot.
I’m very happy with my 1548 Sportsman. The 14ft won’t need as large of engine and isn’t nearly as heavy. While it doesn’t have as much room, it is still a stable platform that will be easier to launch in tough spots and use less fuel depending on the engine. The 16ft is good if you need additional space and if you plan on fishing 3 people regularly on the boat. (I can fish two comfortably on my 1548) it will have better top end 30mph vs 25mph but the larger engine will burn a bit more fuel and it will be a bit heavier making it difficult to launch in shallow water.
@@joeyjoe8892 From my knowledge that particular boat was discontinued they could not justify the difference between the 1548and the 1648 so they simply made a 1648
No way I could steer with my arm twisted behind me like that. They make longer tillers for these. Also if you're having a problem getting on plane then maybe try changing the pin to a different hole in the back for the angle of the motor Thanks for sharing this video
I built my own tiller extender and as a result brought the human weight forward which helps with plane performance.
