  • Music clip culled from the ABC Movie of the Week entitled "The Six Million Dollar Man" (1973) in which injured pilot Steve Austin (actor Lee Majors) is sent on a test mission in the Middle East desert to spot a military base and to free a prisoner. Electronic composer Gil Mellé fashions a music piece that first exploits melancolic classical music and jazz fanfare then switches to electro-modernist music and silky smooth jazz funk (see the eloquent race through the desert from 01:28).

According to an interview by Lee Majors, this was his first scene EVER as Steve Austin. He spent an entire day running around the dunes thinking to himself what kind of a show have I gotten myself into.

This is from the pilot episode, before the "bionic" sounds were incorporated into Steve Austin's actions. Gil Melle did the music, and it was awesome as always. He is one of my favorite jazz musicians.

I wish the whole 5 year run of the series had this kind of science fiction theme. This running in the desert segment introduced us to the abilities of a bionic man, no silly sound effect, etc.

musically interesting to say the least, I've seen this movie enough times to really appreciate how deeply this scene is ingrained with the amazing score, it can go to the dramatic in an instant then back to the eerily strange effects emotionally jerking you around...great stuff

Yes, even as a kid, what occurred to me, is that not long ago, this Austin was legless, with one arm and one eye. And, now, he must be having the time of his life RUNNING, under the blazing sun!!!!!!!!! 😎

Great score and cinematography here. Even though this is supposed to be the middle east, it was actually filmed at the Imperial Sand Dunes in California, which is used for off road recreation. I drove through this area once and the scenery is incredible

this is way before SMDM was co-opted by network bosses into a kids show. It was originally full-on sci-fi. Those shots of him running were superb imo..--like he is still not quite acclimated to bionic limbs. No sfx sounds just the lone agent in the desert running way faster than is normal.

This pilot was the best Six Million Dollar tv movie before the series was adapted by Producer Have Bennett. The music was great and the story was compelling, i liked both Oliver Spencer by Daren Mcgavin and Oscar Goldman played by Richard Anderson. I think we should have seen Oliver Spencer as a guest role in the series.

"Oliver Spencer", played by Darren McGavin, was a cold, unsentimental, and ruthlessly efficient character in this movie. When the succeeding pilot movies and series got going, Richard Anderson's "Oscar Goldman" was introduced as Steve Austin's more compassionate boss and friend.

Supposedly the producers looked at the dailies when it was about to go to series and determined that the slight speeding up looked ludicrous. Based on the pilot i just didnt see it but what do i know. Instead they did slo-mo which looked even more silly. But it became iconic with that weird sound effect. Should have kept it more scifi but it still had a long run and a buncha tv movies. I would like to see a more serious version like what they did with battlestar galactica and lost in space though.
