Who cares? Incredible hulk didn't make sense either. But, most people like the character. I still like the hulk fella. I started seeing 6 Mil man as ridiculous sci fi as I was growing up, but still enjoyed watching some of the episodes, which were good. The golden era of the silly tv sci fi I guess.

Noticed in these clips, he went from pulling handcuffs apart (impossible with only 1 bionic arm) in an earlier episode, to squeezing open a link in the chain with his bionic hand (makes much more sense. . .) in a later season. At least they made the effort!

For those of you who don't know, Monte Markham, who plays the Seven million dollar man, was actually in competition for the role of Steve Austin. Markham had the look and charisma of the original cold-blooded killer character in Martin Caidin's novel Cyborg, as a special ops assassin for the US government, but it was decided by studio execs to be too dark for the role if they wanted the series to last. So in came Lee Majors who was much more wholesome and appealing and added a small bit of humor to the role, to entice adults and children, like me, to watch and love the series.

    • @shrapnel77

Brilliant!!!!!! Loved it!!!! Although I first saw The Six Million Dollar Man during it’s original network run, I have rewatched the series on DVD a few times. And my favorite episodes, a few times more than that! Seeing this “beat-down” sequence, I can’t help but reflect upon what actual damage a bionic man could REALLY do to “normal” assailants. By design, the show (aimed at a family-friendly market) “nerfed” bionic power to a considerable degree. I’d opine that bionic punches and kicks could easily disembowel and even decapitate an opponent. Also, the power Six-Mil could project by running or jumping could easily destroy a human being. Or an automobile. In my “head canon” for the show, Col. Austin held back so as not to kill the bad guys.
Lee Majors did a great job bringing the character to life.

Forgot to mention that it was Lee Majors that made it work. I don’t think anyone else could have been so likable as Steve. He played the role with the right amount of humor and toughness. He made you believe they picked Steve because he would know how to handle the Incredible power they gave him. I watched all the episodes as a kid and do now as an adult. If I’m not mistaken, they trusted Steve so much with the power that they never bothered building a “Fail Safe” device to stop him if he went rouge. At least I don’t remember them talking about one.

I agree totally. FR. He also made me believe he was a dang good Hollywood stuntman AND bounty hunter in the same show,…”The Fall Guy” a couple years after this show. The timing was perfect too, I was young enough to believe in this show all the way, and then they popped out Fall Guy about the time I was starting puberty and trying to be a tough guy myself. Def made a positive impression on my growing up right.

A lot of people like to point out scientific impracticabilities in the show, nitpicking it all instead of just enjoying the awesomeness of it, the style, the swag of it all... And your editing and music made it quite enjoyable, might I add.
I can say as a kid, I like to pretend that the bionics in his body were not pure mechanics, but a result of some unique technology that used biological energy in a enhanced fashion. Hence why they didn't need batteries or recharging. And it had effect on the rest of his body, making it more durable, fast as stronger (albeit not as much as is bionics) as well as it effecting the kinetic energy and force he used... Explaining how a dang football 🏈 could shatter a rifle buttstock and so forth.

Since the end of 30s the American pop culture together with a certain degree of scientific knowledge has believed in the usage of mini nuclear batteries in all type of gadgets and machines everywhere. It is clear even to a Brazilian boy that Steve Austin would be using nuclear batteries to power his legs and his arm.

If u read the original book cyborg by martin caidin you will learn that his non bionic parts were also badly damaged and were greatly strengthened. Examples titanium reinforcement in his spine and ribs , metal reinforcement of his head and his non bionic arm has metal parts especially wrist area so he can break the handcuffs.

U wasted money on a show that was losing its popularity.
When the dude hero grew a moustache and started wearing human feces color leather jackets on the show, it was going downhill...
Dude do-gooders wearing human feces color leather jackets ain't gonna attract viewers cuz they ain't bad ass, ain't cool, ain't chick magnets, ain't real men, and ain't popular dudes.
Real men only wears BLACK LEATHERS. It makes a dude popular, bad ass cool and attracts chicks.

The scene at the start of show where Steve Austin is running like Flash is epic. I'm suprised the was never a remake movie.
