Oliver Nelson - The Last of The Fourth of Julys (1974)

- Music clips culled from the season 1 episode of "The Six Million Dollar Man" entitled "The Last of The Fourth of Julys" (1974) in which bionic man Steve Austin (actor Lee Majors) is sent on a mission to a private island to spy on the base of weapons dealer Quail and first jumps a 30-foot high electrified fence and, later on, he is harshly interrogated by a goon in a strobo chair.
Composer Oliver Nelson writes a funky action-packed cue whose dominant instruments are a sustained conga, a bass guitar and a drum followed by soft violins and brass playing the theme of Steve Austin at 00:18, then at 01:02, we can hear a fast-paced conga solo and finally the tempo speeds up at 01:08 in order to depict the ordeal. The last part of the clip starting at 01:42 is made of an electronic sound effects used a lot at Universal television from the late 60's to the 70's: see the Columbo telefilm entitled "Ransom for a Dead Man".
There will never be another Six Million Dollar Man like Lee Majors he was perfect for this classic TV show.
and to think Martin caidin who wrote the original cyborg novel did not want him for the role..wanted monte markam later the seven million dollar man😦
Lee Majors must have been the healthiest actor in Hollywood!!!
He looked it too, Shatner was getting fat when he played on that "burning bright" episode with Majors I always thought William Shatner was in great shape too until that episode
I so loved Lee Majors in this my favourte TV show show ever including todays shows. He was way better than all action stars of later on.
Bongos are bad ass!!!
I was 13 when this episode aired. I'm 55 in 2016 now. Therefore it's still absolutely criminal that all of Oliver Nelson's fantastic music on the Six Million Dollar man hasn't been released. I even tried to twist the arm of La-La records considering the great box set releases they made on Star Trek, Mission Impossible and Lost In Space. Maybe if others tried to twist their arm too.
Oliver Nelson was really talented - the music on that show was great - very emotive
Actually, only ONE piece of Nelson's incidental music was ever released: "Baja Bossa", written for the episode "The Peeping Blonde."

This is my favourite episode!
No kidding brother it was awesome. And look what they have done with Guaraldi and the Charlie Brown stuff. Just don't get it.
Oliver Nelson was the greatest. When he passed, the music was slow and wasn't the same. Great composer!
Roy Desoto interrogating Austin.
Noice.
@@alexxbaudwhyn7572 And T'Pring is the girl. Arlene Martel plays the girl in this episode. She played T'Pring the girl Spock was to marry on Star Trek TOS season 2 episode 1 Amok Time when Spock has to get laid
There should have been a soundtrack recording made from this tv show!!
I agree, oliver nelson was the heart of the show
I wish I could get all the soundtrack music, happy holidays
Nelson provided the music. Full stop. The heart was Lee Majors.
@@tryarunmAnd Nelson’s music was a strong contribution to the show’s success.
The show was fantastic back in the day as those of us in 1970s had to watch on small screen TVs B/W no color no recorders. Years later it's holding strong. The music score by Oliver Nelson topped the great action scenes. It's quite fascinating that the technology shown is very real today. Technology Bionics, Robotics a prelude what's to come. The Six Million Dollar Man ahead of its time.👍🌟💫✨
I've always wondered why Steve needed to pole vault over that fence. In later episodes, he was able to leap onto multiple story buildings from a standstill.
Amazing work!!!
Oliver Nelson was a bad mother f***** his music really set the tone
Love him
"There are THREE lights!"
Lee Majors the Best!!
Sensational music score
Love the music on SMDM 🇺🇸🇺🇸😉
This cut is Definately funky love it

Nice and interesting video description, thank you very much! That said, I hope they will one day release the music in STEREO on an audio CD!
1:02 you knew shit was about to get real when this music started
Seriously, every year there is a comment about why he needed the vault. It's an early episode, his powers were increased as the show went on. There, 2020 is good. Someone else explain it next year.
Dood, why'd Austin need to vault? Bionic leg jump man
😎
It's WILD, Steve!
Fiction will become a reality in the future.
Best Music ever
I never understood the pole vault. He can jump at least 30 feet straight up!
I think this was an earlier episode, and they sort of evolved into the jumping thing
Right i was thinkn the same exact thing
The fence was 31 feet!
@@Ladiesandgentlemen121 To jump that extra foot woulda required him to be the 9 million dollar man. Not a worthwhile ROI.
He didn’t like the looks of that barb wire.
I got a fever and the only prescription is more bionic bongos!
Amazing that nobody, addressed the 'mind-control' technique used in this episode ..
As Steve vaults over the fence, he is facing backwards toward the fence....then they cut to the landing and he is suddenly facing forward away from the fence.
He did a mid air spin.
Oh no, not the strobe light carousel! I'll talk. Just don't make me puke!
It's a stunt double
Was somewhat disappointed that Steve had to vault it-----😂.
todavia espero la nueva version de Mark Wahlberg!
If they're gonna remake old stuff, this would be great. Especially if they made it a little darker.
I watch this clip and wonder: if Steve's bionic legs allow him to jump real high...why did he have to pole-vault?
If they ever get the film going, they must try to keep the style and pacing of the first 2-3 NElson seasons
Probably the best choice for the film soundtrack composer might be Michael Giacchino, who has a demonstrated ability to pay homage to/write in the style of a classic series/film, yet be original.
Good example is The Incredibles with that 60s Bond vibe, without copying the tunes directly.
Hans Zimmer might also be a good choice
They didn't always do a good job of canceling his stunt double.
Lee did most of his stunts when he did this show. Big Valley and The Fall Guy? Likely that too
👍👍
Oliver Nelson morreu no ano seguinte. 1975. Não entendi porque Steve não pulou com Seus próprios esforços.
Down below someone posted that they didn't understand why he pole vaulted that fence instead of jumping over it I think its because it was electrically charged and he didn't want to chance it.
There was always an implied height limit to the 'bionic jump', even though it was never stated. Other episodes had Steve jump to the top of a fence or structure, stop to 'regroup', then make the downward jump.
It's easily assumed that this fence hits that limit, and the pole was needed to avoid the electric wires.
It's interesting to think on it, but having the super powered legs wouldn't give him the agility or coordination to cope with all the speed from running and vaulting like this. I guess you just have to assume that he retrained his senses over time to handle the differences.
thats what i said ..he can jump as high as he pole vaulted ..i didn't understand why he didn't just jump straight up and over like he always would
I agree, he could of and should of been able to jump right over!...still it were fancy looking and new to see him go over a fence or wall in a different way
Electric carousel rotates in with Flickr haha

actually it's not a sustained conga, but rather sustained bongos.
Using a Vault??????? 😛😛😛😛😛

Anyone watching this on the fourth of July?
I did
No, but I did watch it Christmas Day.
Kevin was bad LOL...
I never got use to Kevin Tighe playing the heavy. He will always be Fireman Roy Desoto.
@@baxter6504 He was also on a Star Trek Voyager episode and in My Bloody Valentine
@@baxter6504 Yep, I was a big fan of _Emergency!,_ so seeing him play a villain sorta confused me.

There is only one modern actor who could resurrect the Colonel Steve Austin character:
Thomas Jane.
He could make Steve Austin great again
