Bullitt Soundtrack - Lalo Schifrin - "Shifting Gears" HD

  • Lalo Schifrin's classic score which is prelude to a classic chase scene from Bullitt.
Shortly after recording the film soundtrack, Schifrin led a separate recording for an album. While some score passages and cues are virtually identical to the film score, many of the film soundtrack’s softer, moodier cues were not chosen for the LP or had certain passages rewritten.

We saw this blockbuster at a huge drive-in theatre in Texas and the place held spaces for 500 cars and each car was packed with people----and most of the cars were huge. Ten minutes before the movie started, the box office was closed----the place was full. Unless you were there in 1968, you don't really know just how exciting this Saturday night out at the movies could be. The average drive-in screen was already much larger than even the largest screens in the downtown movie palaces, but the larger drive-ins, like this one, had THE largest screen in the entire state; in fact, it was one of just twenty screens out of 5,000 in the U.S. that was this large. This great drive-in had a playground, a miniature golf course, three snack bars, an arcade, and a miniature boat lake for the kids with state-of-the-art rechargeable boats! The 1960's was a decade that had its problems, but middle class families had it pretty good, and a night out at a drive-in like this one beats just about anything that is out there today.

Mr. Relyea was assistant director/unit manager on JAILHOUSE ROCK, THE ALAMO, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, WEST SIDE STORY, KINGS OF THE SUN, THE GREAT ESCAPE, so many iconic movies and his friendship and working relationship ended with McQueen's meltdown on LE MANS...

I lived on Potrtro Hill, SF, for a very long time, and I can tell you ALL the movie's street scenes were carefully choreographed, filmed many times over, and the SFPD were on site to manage traffic and spectators. A special ramp was built on West bound 20th Street @ Rhode Island Street so the Dodge Charger and the Ford Mustang would jump-up into the air and land on the Rhode Island Street intersection. There were two sets of the Charger and the Mustang cars, in addition to many-many back ground cars (i.e. Green Volkswagen Beatle, White Pontiac Firebird, Yellow Taxie) brought in on trailers. Residents were required to remove their parked cars on many of the streets. The Dodge was damaged when it accidentally side-swiped a motion picture camera set up on Lombard Street. McQueen autographed many photo sheets for the spectators and neighbors. See the movie on a movie theater screen to experience the feel of the up-down roller coaster sensation of the auto chase montage. It's what made the movie very popular with audiences.

Bullitt is a 1968 American drama-thriller film directed by Peter Yates and produced by Philip D'Antoni. It stars Steve McQueen, Robert Vaughn, and Jacqueline Bisset. The screenplay by Alan R. Trustman and Harry Kleiner was based on the 1963 novel, Mute Witness, by Robert L. Fish, writing under the pseudonym Robert L. Pike. Lalo Schifrin wrote the original jazz-inspired score, arranged for brass and percussion. Robert Duvall has a small part as a cab driver who provides information to McQueen.
The film was made by McQueen's Solar Productions company, with his then-partner Robert E. Relyea as executive producer. Released by Warner Bros.-Seven Arts on October 17, 1968, the film was a critical and box office smash, later winning the Academy Award for Best Film Editing (Frank P. Keller) and receiving a nomination for Best Sound. Writers Trustman and Kleiner won a 1969 Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Motion Picture Screenplay. Bullitt is also notable for its car chase scene through the streets of San Francisco, regarded as one of the most influential in movie history.
In 2007, Bullitt was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
    Plot
Ambitious politician Walter Chalmers (Robert Vaughn) is about to present a surprise star witness in a Senate subcommittee hearing on organized crime. The witness, Johnny Ross, a defector from the Organization in Chicago, is put under San Francisco Police Department protective custody for the weekend, 40 hours until his Monday morning appearance.
To improve his own image, Chalmers requests SFPD Lieutenant Frank Bullitt (Steve McQueen), who is well-liked by the local media. Bullitt and his team, Sergeant Delgetti (Don Gordon) and Inspector Carl Stanton (Carl Reindel), put Ross (Felice Orlandi) under around-the-clock protection in a cheap hotel selected by Chalmers. Late Saturday night, while Bullitt is with his girlfriend Cathy (Jacqueline Bisset), a designer, Stanton is on solo duty when the desk clerk unexpectedly calls to announce that Chalmers wants to come up. While Stanton checks by phone with Bullitt, Ross inexplicably (at the time) unchains the hotel room door. A pair of hitmen (Paul Genge and Bill Hickman) burst in and shoot Stanton and Ross, seriously wounding both.
At the hospital, Chalmers holds Bullitt responsible. Later, a second assassination attempt is thwarted by Bullitt, but Ross soon dies of his original injuries. Helped by a sympathetic doctor (Georg Stanford Brown) who had been snubbed by Chalmers, Bullitt delays news of the death by sending the body to the morgue as a John Doe.
Bullitt and Delgetti investigate. The cab driver (Robert Duvall) who drove Ross to the hotel remembers stopping to let Ross make a long distance call from a pay phone. A confidential informant reveals that Ross was caught stealing $2 million from the Chicago Mob and fled to San Francisco after escaping an attempted hit in Chicago. Meanwhile, Chalmers serves Bullitt's captain (Simon Oakland) with a writ of habeas corpus to force him to make Bullitt give up Ross, but the lieutenant does not cooperate.
While driving his 1968 Ford Mustang GT, Bullitt spots the Ross hitmen tailing him in a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T. He maneuvers to get behind them, they attempt to flee, and a high-speed muscle car chase ensues, through the hilly streets of San Francisco's Russian Hill and out onto the highway, ending when the Mustang forces the Charger off the road and into a gas station, causing a fiery explosion that incinerates the hitmen.
Bullitt and Delgetti face their superiors. They reveal that Ross is dead and that their only lead is phone records showing that Ross's call was to a Dorothy Simmons in a hotel in nearby San Mateo. It is Sunday; the detectives are given until Monday to follow up the lead. With his car out of commission, Bullitt gets a ride from Cathy. The detectives find Dorothy Simmons strangled to death. Cathy sees police rushing in and follows, fearing for Bullitt. Afterwards, horrified by the crime scene, she confronts him about his violent world, wondering whether she even really knows him.
Back in San Francisco, Bullitt and Delgetti search Simmons's luggage, discovering men's and women's clothing, empty ticket and passport folders, a travel brochure for Rome, and thousands of dollars in travelers' checks made out to Albert Renick and Dorothy Renick. Bullitt requests passport information for the Renicks and a fingerprint check for the dead Ross.
Chalmers again confronts Bullitt, demanding a signed admission that Ross died while in his custody. Bullitt refuses. A facsimile of Albert Renick's passport application arrives, showing the man they thought was Ross was actually Renick, a used car salesman from Chicago with no criminal record. Bullitt realizes that Simmons was Mrs. Renick; the real Ross had used Chalmers to fake his own death by setting up Renick to die, then murdered her to complete the cover-up.
Delgetti discovers reservations for the Renicks on an evening flight to Rome. He and Bullitt head to the airport to look for the real Ross (Pat Renella), who must be traveling as Renick. They stake out the Rome flight gate, only to find that Ross has switched to an earlier flight to London that is already taxiing toward takeoff. Chalmers shows up to lay claim to the real Ross even though he is now wanted for murder, and is again rebuffed by Bullitt.
Bullitt has the plane stopped, but Ross escapes. A foot chase across the busy runways ends in a tense pursuit inside the crowded passenger terminal. When Ross bolts and shoots a security guard, Bullitt shoots and kills Ross. Left behind, empty-handed, is Chalmers, who is driven off in a car with a "Support Your Local Police" bumper sticker.
Early the next morning, Bullitt drives home. As he walks up to his apartment, he spots Cathy's car. He looks in and sees her sleeping in his bedroom but he does not wake her. He takes off his gun and balances it on a banister. As he begins to wash up at the bathroom sink, he looks up into his own reflection and contemplates himself for a long moment.
Great Film. Those who are young, and/or never seen it, this film is a one to watch.

Source please. I'm interested to know how the heck you can make a bigger and heavier car handle better than the lighter one. You see Mustangs were successfully raced in the U.S. Road Racing series as well as Trans Am. In fact they won the 1970 Trans Am series outright with the AMC Javelin being the closest competitor. The closest Dodge was the Challenger - i.e. a lighter car more suited for track racing. And I mean as in proper racing tracks not frickin' ovals. Behemoths like the Charger would only ever be good on dragstrips (or banked ovals). City streets? Not so much.
Anybody will tell you that the Chargers weren't even handling very well by the standards of the late 60's and were akin to boats in the curves. Fact is that this is also *perfectly obvious* in this scene. Looks like it's really struggling in the curves. The Mustang not nearly as much.
However since the Charger was more robust (probably explains part of its significantly higher weight) it could take more abuse and was reportedly more reliable.
Believe what you will but in circuit racing *weight is a huge liability* .
The 1968 Mustang was just 3018 lbs lb heavy.
      The 1968 Charger R/T 440 was 3849 lbs heavy.
3849-3018 = 831 Ib's heavier (!!). No wonder it was never raced in road racing (proper tracks not ovals)
You see in racing 80 Ibs is a serious disadvantage never mind over 800 Ibs!
I think the extra weight is obvious in the shots the Charger "corners". I'm amazed this fact just flies completely over your heads. Try running a half full shopping cart around the aisles of a store and then load it full and see if you can run through a course nearly as fast.
So I'm really curious how the "production crew" of this mere film managed to make an 800 pounds heavier car be able to outrun a nimbler car on these city streets? You know, the world's top racing teams would walk through b*tt naked through ten miles of snow to learn how they managed to neutralize the laws of *inertia* - something which has been well-known to designers of racing cars since the 1920's.
You know some Mustangs were even entered into rallies - although they were themselves much too heavy to compete on even terms with the successful rally cars of the time (ultra-nimble).
This story of yours is awfully hard to believe because the laws of nature, the racing success of the Mustang in road racing and the very obvious visual evidence in this very clips just renders that story your have ridiculous.
And don't come here and compare straight line acceleration. That sells cars to ignoramuses who don't know any better. Sort of selling Hi-Fi equipment by its watts or watches by the amount of gaudy jewelry they have.
