    You asked if the Mongols knew about the land they were invading in Europe. They had adopted Chinese cartography and using agents and merchants who made extensive maps of Europe, not just where they invaded but also further west. Much of their mapping across Eurasia was focused on where they could feed their horses as they conquered.

    • @nevets2371

      The first expeditions by the mongols into Europe were scouting parties, granted extremely dangerous scouting parties, but that shows they weren't too well acquainted with it. They did trade for some maps from the Venitians when they reached the black sea.

    the story of Mulan was based on a poem called “Ballad of Mulan". The original ballad did not mention who they are fighting against because that's not the main focus of the ballad. In fact in the ballad, it was a khan rather than a emperor asked what she desire as reward of her military service in that ballad.

    So yes, there were several things that stopped the Mongol Conquest of Europe. You guessed the number 1 reason: fortifications. All of China had 40 something odd castles/fortified cities (though to be fair, they were damn impressive fortifications). Each of these 40 fortified cities were quite a challenge to the Mongols, but they were able to either starve them out or utilize Chinese siege engineers to knock them down. Also, fortified cities had a different purpose in China than castles did in Europe. In China, they were meant to hold off an enemy until the Chinese army came and relieved the siege, and so often did not have years worth of supplies like European castles. To be fair, there were simply too many people to have that many supplies.
    Now, compared to Europe? The Holy Roman Empire had over 11,000 castles. Yes, it's absurd. Even if each individual castle wasn't as impressive as a fortified city, that many castles made Europe just not worth the effort to attack. It'd be like... all of China being captured if you siege down 4 level 5 forts, but then comparing that to the HRE, where every single province is a level 2 or 3 fort. Sure, there was no individual castle the Mongols couldn't EVENTUALLY take, but they correctly deemed that the juice wasn't worth the squeeze, which was exactly the European philosophy: make it such a pain in the ass to siege down your nation that invaders just leave you alone.
    The other thing that stopped the Mongols that can be related to EU4 is supply. The Mongol army was mostly cavalry, now, if the game modeled cavalry correctly, they wouldn't be quite as expensive as they are, but they would have 4 times the supply weight of an infantry division. However, that supply weight would be half on Steppes, Grasslands, and Farmlands provinces, where the horses can graze. The Mongols conquered about as far as the terrain let them. Their last successful invasion, of Hungary, failed when there was so much rain, the grasslands turned into marshes and swamps, rendering the Mongols unable to forage, and so they had to retreat, lest all their horses starve to death.
    Just a bit of trivia from a guy who reads way too much :) Great video, entertaining as always!

    • @oguzkaganonder1331
      @oguzkaganonder1331 10 месяцев назад +1

      it wasn't the castles, Mongols destroyed HRE + Bohemian army with ease after destroying the Polish army, they could also just throw dead bodies to forts, they conquered thousands of castles before so they could just conquer another thousand and subjugate the other, only thing that stopped mongols were the great Khan dying and Mongol Empire collapsing into smaller states, also Mongol supply lines were pretty decent and they were steppe warriors that used to raid and resupply, so everything you say is simply wrong, they stopped because Khan died not because of the forts that would fall without a fight if you throw some dead bodies in them

    9:23, to be completely fair to the Koreans they were one of the first and few nations that resisted the Mongol invasions, managing to secure its autonomy via being a vassal state.
    While Japan and Vietnam are often credited with defeating the Mongols, Japan never had much full-scale combat with Mongolia unlike Korea. Vietnam, while its successes cant be ignored, faced invasions far from the Mongol homeland and faced climate unfamiliar to the Mongols.
    Korea, who were geographically much closer than Japan or Vietnam put up a hefty fight against the Mongols; facing the armies of Mongolias height, taking 6 invasions and scoring massive victories alike to Vietnam, and even managing to be one of the few nations being to kill a Mongolian General in battle.
    Edit: some grammatical stuff. also I don't know if I used a semicolon right but who knows

    13:44 The Huns who are in the West are actually also called Western Huns, and those are in the East are also Huns. There is some debate over whether they were Turkic, Mongolic, some even suggesting that they were maybe indo-european, but apparantly there are some sources sources indicating that the ruling class spoke a Turkic language. But still, no real consensus as of yet. (The indo-european in the bunch actually comes from the fact that there is some even more ancient horse taming civilisation that took off in what is Ukraine today, and one branch went to the southern Caucasus, the other went to North of China, and there is some debate around whether they are the Proto-Turks, or another branch of the proto-indo-europeans, etc. etc. So no definitive consensus.)

    13:43 firstly are you sure they say HUN & not HAN? secondly the Hun are supposed to have originated in Asia, possibly China:
    "No one knows exactly where the Huns came from. Some scholars believe they originated from the nomad Xiongnu people who entered the historical record in 318 B.C. and terrorized China during the Qin Dynasty and during the later Han Dynasty. The Great Wall of China was reportedly built to help protect against the mighty Xiongnu.
    Other historians believe the Huns originated from Kazakhstan, or elsewhere in Asia.
    Prior to the 4th century, the Huns traveled in small groups led by chieftains and had no known individual king or leader. They arrived in southeastern Europe around 370 A.D. and conquered one territory after another for over 70 years."

    The Mongols invading the Balkan Peninsula is a pretty interesting scenario to think of. They could have thought of doing so since the Carpathian Basin is amazing for horses. Constantinople might have been a prize, I mean legit everybody on Earth wanted that city. With the Mongols on the doorsteps of Vienna, who's to say they could have made some raids into Germany. And then there would perhaps be one or two new cultures born from a mix of Southern Slavic and Mongol cultures, as well as a mix with the Greeks and the Hungarians.

    Most scholars belive the huns originate from central asia somewhere, but anything more specific is theories at best since the word hun is an a term given by the european. But the huns in europe did use a similar bow on horseback and steppe tacticsas the mongols, wether this is due to similar origins or its two seperate groups discovering the same optimal strats for their similar habitats is disputed. The use of gunpowder and architecture in Mulan suggest the Ming dynasy given the state of the forbidden city and the great wall, but that is a tousand years after the historic huns arrived in europe.
    The short answer the chinese han might have fought a group that would recieve the moniker of "the huns" in europe, but there is no definitive way of saying that with the current information, and Mulan is just a mash of diffrent historical periods that probably used the term "huns" as a shorthand for enemy innvader

    The Huns were a break off group from the Xiongnu. To Disney it was better to just say "Huns" cause it's easier to remember and works better in the song, and the Xiongnu were huns

    The giving the title of "Hun" is based on a history of bad translations and transcription. One, small tribe that was a part of the Xiongnu was written ad Yuhun. Thay it, and that the Huns did come from Central Asia (but were not Indo European)

      The Huns were referred to by China as the Xiongnu. Mulan is a slew of anachronisms (gunpowder wouldn't have existed yet), but the Huns did invade China AND Europe, as well as Persia, like the later Mongols and Turkic peoples.

      @@wallyvargas-rios9305 Yes but the Xiongnu were not related to the Huns in Europe. In that regard, Laith is correct.

    The reason Byzantium wasn’t there is because they where divided between several catholic crusader states during this time. It was as a result of The Fourth Crusade. Nicea would later take back most Byzantine territory and thereby restoring Byzantium

    I googled it, apparently Bulgaria was the one to halt a major push of the Mongols which slowly started the collapse, or at least was the first domino
    And another thing, apperently the best Dynasty to ever rule china wasnt even Chinese, it was the Yuan Dynasty, aka one of the Khanates that appeared when the Empire collapsed. Makes me wonder, which khanate lasted the longest? Chagatai or Golden Horde? I think Ilkhanate was the first one to collapse then the Yuan

    • @kaanalpkaratas6091
      @kaanalpkaratas6091 Месяц назад

      If we take Golden Horde's prodescessor Khanates (Especially Crimea, it was still ruled by Girai dynasty who were descendant of Genghis Khan in 17th century), then it was the longest to survive but there is Jagatai which had survived longer than Golden Horde. Ilkhanate collapsed first and made a major Turkmen migration to Middle East. Jagatai summoned Timurids then Mughals which lasted until the British came. So Ilkhanate was first to fall while Mughals were to last.

    I am sure using the word "Huns" was a musical decision by Disney...
    However, after living in and learning a bit of Chinese and how languages are translated in Asia, they may have translated Huns to mean "barbarians" or "invaders". And if that is the case, to the Chinese, the Mongolians would been "Huns" (so partially correct). IE the Mongolian Huns are attacking = those Mongolian invaders are attacking...
    Like if you referred to criminals who committed vandalism as vandal... You are not calling them the descendants of the Vandal culture.
    Other example are how Foreign Devils = Foreign Ghosts = Foreign Wolves = Foreign Thieves are all used interchangeably
    Or maybe in Chinese Huns = nomadic Horse riders, or something to that extent.
