- BYD Seal U First Drive Review: A Capable And Competent Electric SUV
BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle juggernaut, continues its march into global markets with the introduction of the new Seal U electric SUV. We recently had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of this midsize electric utility vehicle ahead of its arrival in the UK and Europe later this year.
At first glance, the Seal U has shades of the Tesla Model Y in its overall shape and proportions. Measuring 4,775mm long, it slots squarely into the popular mid-size SUV segment, taking on established nameplates like the Ford Kuga, Hyundai Tucson, and Volkswagen Tiguan. While its exterior styling doesn't stray too far from the mainstream SUV formula, the Seal U has a clean and inoffensive look that should appeal to family buyers.
Step inside, and you're greeted by a modern and well-appointed cabin. The highlight is the massive 15.6-inch rotating central touchscreen, a signature feature found in other BYD models. The overall interior design is clutter-free and features a mix of premium materials, including soft-touch surfaces and metallic accents. Practicality is also a strong suit, with a spacious cabin and a decent cargo area, although not quite class-leading.
On the road, the Seal U impresses with its refined and composed driving dynamics. Our test car, equipped with 19-inch wheels and Michelin tires, exhibited excellent ride quality and minimal road noise. Body control is well-managed, though there is some expected body roll during spirited cornering due to the softer suspension tuning compared to the Seal sedan.
The steering is light yet accurate, lending the Seal U a sense of agility and poise. While it may not excite enthusiast drivers like the dual-motor Seal sedan, the Seal U is a surefooted and polished drive overall. It's worth noting that we sampled the plug-in hybrid variant, which pairs a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor. The fully electric version, with its lower center of gravity, should offer even sharper handling and quicker acceleration.
As for the plug-in hybrid powertrain in our test car, it performed admirably. The electric motor provided silent and seamless acceleration, with the gasoline engine kicking in smoothly when needed. BYD claims a 0-62 mph time of 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 105 mph for this variant.
Overall, the BYD Seal U shapes up to be a competent and practical midsize electric SUV. It may not redefine the segment, but it ticks all the right boxes for family buyers seeking a well-rounded and affordable electric utility vehicle. With competitive pricing and a compelling fully electric variant on the way, the Seal U could prove to be another hit for BYD in the European market.
