I’m a professional photog and used my XT-4 for the first time last night. I feel like I’ve taken a major step down in quality from the canon 5d. Hopefully the out of the box settings are just badly chosen by the company and I can fix this. Feels like instead of a fuji I just bought an iphone 6 camera.

No not the best aps-c, the x-trans array sucks for fine detail. Even fuji must be admitting it because they use bayer sensors in their medium format cams. If they ditch x-trans, i would buy fuji without hesitating.

Owning Sony A7sii, Nikon d750 and Canon 5dmk4 over the years finally dove into Fujifilm. My xt4 arrived a few days ago and I can't say enough good things about it. I was able to figure out the menus and controls within seconds. Its by far the easiest camera I've ever had to master. I'm not sure I can ever go back to a camera without all the dedicated knobs!

Great review, Gordon. Thank you for sharing. I have an X-T4 and I agree with everything you said. I upgraded from an X-T3 not for the video features but for IBIS with photography and for the better battery. From my limited testing, I'm very impressed with it. I took a photo of the street from my balcony at just after midnight - handheld at f/2, 1/10, ISO 3200 - and it was sharp. I tried the same without IBIS and, well... it wasn't. Makes sense but it's the first time I've used IBIS so it was exciting. I can't wait to get out there properly and do some street photography.
    Thanks again, Gordon. Take care.

As an XT3 owner I think this is a very minor upgrade, IBIS is definitely good but not a must, specially if you r using a stabilized lens, the bigger battery of course was a so much needed change, these are the 2 things for me yet not enough reasons to upgrade from the X-T3.

APS-C cameras like these makes you think twice before investing in micro 4/3.
If a person has no cameras at all, hasn't invested into any system, I feel Aps-c is the sweet spot. And the XT-4 is the perfect APS-C.

I'm looking for a completely new system (my current APS-C Nikon camera and lenses are old and entry models).
For me the X-T4 is just too expensive, also the Fuji lenses are very high priced.
So - in my case - it makes more sense to go for a Nikon Z6 or Sony A7 III, roughly the same price and also weight but Full Frame (affordable and very good F2.8 Tamron zoom lenses) and better grip for all-day outdoors.
Even though the X-T4 is a very good camera for sure, 20 % lower price and I would consider it ...

A limitation of the XT3 and the fuji X series, is the remote camera app when recording video. Wai Lam did a thorough review on the Fuji Remote Camera App, pointing to these shortcomings that make it unusable for video control (no ability to focus, freezing of the image), that make it difficult to use for instance when self-recording and trying to set the focus. I suppose they haven't updated the app for the XT4. The GH5 app, comparatively, is very complete and useful. Thank you for your review.

Lovely review, Gordon. I really love my X-T4----so much I'm yet to take advantage of. Only shooting video, I don't miss full frame at all except for the convenience. My metabones FD to X mount speed booster gives me full frame and extra light when and if I need it--and PLENTY of bokeh. And love the new batteries and battery charger---worth the money, for sure.
Now, I have small hands----and while the X-T4 is comfortable to hold, especially using the battery grip, I will be more excited to hear about the debut of X-H2. If it came out I'd buy it today...or even yesterday---if I could. Both had, for me, something as a video shooter I find indispensable: Cinema 4k. No cinema 4K--no purchase.
I note you omitted remarking about using non-electronic lenses---that's all I shoot with. I have a set of X mount Rokinon's that are wonderful to use. And the focus peaking is the best in the business, hand's down. Combined with the ability to move the focus box and punch in ANYTIME and refocus makes the T4 a video MF shooter's dream. No one mentions this feature, but, IMO, for video and manual focus shooting it's Fuji's jewel in the crown. Using it I NEVER miss a focus pull or have to re-do a focus pull because I missed critical focus. Every camera that aspires to attract video shooters should have this feature.
I loved the X-H1, image was beautiful, and body remains, IMO, unsurpassed. If it had better batteries I'd buy it again today.
Alas, the X-H1 does lack the X-T4's new Vampire simulation.
    :-(
Fortunately, not a deal breaker for me.
    ;-)

I couldn't agree more on the IBIS. Ever since I had a camera with that system, I never bought one without it. Hi Gordon,
I really loved this review, super detailed.
I'm looking for a camera that's good for still, but furthermore can do 4K 60fps, and this seems to tick all the boxes.
    Here are my requirements:
-4K 60fps, mic jack input (this has USB-C)
-Good AF, and don't want to be fiddling with manual adjustments on the lens
    -Sub £2k with everything
-Easy enough to use for a novice - I'm no pro like yourself or most who would be getting this camera
I'm currently using a Sony RX100 MK1 (yes old school), for all my videos on RUclips and still on my website. It's good, but really want to step it up a level.
Would you suggest this camera over say the Panasonic Lumix DC-S5; or any other camera you can think of that will fulfil my requirements? If so, which lens kit would you suggest.
Oh, and if I disable IBIS - would I still get the choppy effect you mentioned when panning - as that's important for me for B-roll footage?
Thank you so much in advance!

Best camera reviews ever Gordon! Such a compelling choice for me, but not enough to switch from my current olympus system. IBIS doesn't seem that effective, at least in video mode.. Starting to think there will never be a ILC platform that beats m43 when it comes to stabilization. Incredible features this camera packs though, like the 4k fps & bitrate options

The major drawback for video in the XT3 is that it stutters (creates irregular movement) when doing a panning, even on a fluid head tripod, and most of the time that ruins the shot, when working on a gimbal or when panning, and that comes from the sensor or the processing, which haven't changed much in the XT4. I see at 16:11 some slow and short panning movements, and when you look at it, there is some stutter, even if there are good conditions (slow movement, relatively distant subject), which makes me fear that the issue persists and that makes it unusable for me while moving the camera.

Being that I shoot nature primarily, where there is no moire, X-Trans is a drawback for me. I've seen the worms, and I don't like them one bit. I know you've got to pixel peep to see them, but I'm into retouching that can last more than a day for a single picture. I'm a perfectionist. Can't help it. Thank you for the excellent review. I changed from Nikon (D810) to an X-T2 and added an X-T3. I like much about the Fuji system but Lightroom just does not handle the raw files well. (I saw some comments below but can't find them again.) I have taken about 50,000 photos with the cameras and notice the issue, especially at higher ISO values. Yesterday I did a test by saving both the jpg and raw files and importing them into the latest version of LR. The SOOC jpg file clearly had many fewer "worms" than the raw file (at a 4:1 view). Part of my photography hobby is capturing birds, and I find that I often lose fine details, even after following various sharpening routines. I have tried Iridient and Capture 1. And even considered going back to Nikon. Any suggestions?

I'm weighing the XT4 versus the EM1.3 as a travel vlogging camera. Oly IBIS gives better stabilized video in my opinion. Some really good and affordable lens selection, that also weigh less.
The XT4 is attractive for higher quality video. Particularly the better 4K frame rate, and 10 bit video. It seems more future proof. The lens options makes this so much more difficult choice. Only a few good ones and they tend to be expensive or heavy.

My Olympus cameras have focus peaking and is really fun to use. It's like ants racing around on the image screen. There is no doubt about what's in focus. I read somewhere this is one of the advantages of mirrorless cameras over dslrs. The focus of the mirrorless cameras is based upon how focused the image is on the sensor that's going to take the photograph. The focus on the DSLR cameras is based upon how a lens is focused to a separate sensor above the mirror.

Thank you for this excellent and easy to follow review! There's just one thing I'm missing (and for some reason nobody else seems to think about it too). It's the quality of the audio input. For example the signal to noise ratio, limiters, line or mic input selection and the overall sound quality. It's borderline frustrating not a single video of this camera addresses the audio quality. Is there any chance you could do a little follow up on this?

Hi Gordon, i m in a deep research to buy a camera for a long time, i have a question ; X-T4 is 26MP and X-A7 is 24 MP, lets not see that 2MP resulation difference which does not make any change in my case i guess , these 2 cameras have Aps-C sensors and same (nearly) resulation, so shouldnt they see same level of detail in dark scenes? All other features like Native ISO and Processor Speed etc. make the X-T4 see better in dark? That is why X-T4 multiplies the price of X-A7? Thats a technical and kinda logical question for me becuase they have the same pixel size (nearly) which is the real case to collect light. So to see better in dark scenes, where real price difference goes to?

@@cameralabs thanks for the quick reply! I think I'd be happy with either lens system, generally I try to steer towards the more affordable, bang for your buck route. I dont have any preference on camera design aside from it being mirrorless and being weather proof/sealed. At this point in time, video autofocus is probably not one of my deal breakers. Right now I'm still on a Nikon d3300 dslr, but I've been itching to get back into photography with a worthy upgrade that'll last me years and I feel like i've narrowed it down to the 3 I mentioned before, i know there's plenty more cameras out there of cours!
