  • Sometimes it just takes a bit of scratching the surface until you see the dirt that needs to be swept away.
The Olight Flashlights company knows how to sell well and aggressively on RUclips.
If there is also questionable and poor quality of the products, the mix is perfect.
Why do you hardly find, or almost no, critical reviews of Olight on YouToube?
I'll explain why and how Olight's business practices work.
Advertising and mass at any cost.
    Long live consumption!

I've owned Olight flashlights (among others) for four or five years now. I've done overnight solo camping, extended camping/backpacking, used them at work, etc. The only issue I've ever had with Olight was the original R50 light that they made that had bad batteries (proprietary 26650 batteries). Other than that, have no issues with their various models (I own several M2R Pros, Baton Pro, Baton 3, etc.) as well as Surefire, Streamlight, etc. From what I've seen, Olights are built just as well as any of the others. After all of the abuse from drops, camping, handyman work, etc. all of my Olights are still working fine except the original R50 lights due to the batteries being discontinue (I can use regular 26650 batteries in them, but that doesn't support their magnetic charging capability).

That's exactly the problem here. They do use cheaper quality components to reach those prices and they tend to melt down with heavy use. The ones that died on me were the one in my boat, and the one I carried every day. They run too hot and don't care about the damage that happens with longterm hard use. They are fine with drops on medium but one good bump after running on high and they can fail easily. I still have a few but I have 2 4sevens and 2 surefire that I had before I ever had an olight they're still with me. One 4sevens spent a winter in a snow drift, found in spring and has been run over by my jeep on pavement. We have owned 2 Olight headlamps for the last 18 months. We cannot fault them in any way. We have only replaced the headlamp elastic band on both recently. We are travelling full time and have used the headlamps on a daily basis, every night since purchasing from dusk till the time we settle...anywhere up to 4 to 5 hours per night and sometimes throughout the day if we need light for doing something in a dark spot. Usually they are on moonlight or the next setting up. Our only issue has been the head band not staying tight...usually a small adjustment and they are fine...we havent had any problems with them at all and still using the original batteries. We do put them into turbo mode....but rarely because it can shorten the life of the battery.
The shrewd advertising campaign that they pursue is modern online business tactics.
We have an Olight Javelot for emergencies..and have two Shen Yu (similar to the old maglights) spotlights for the same reason.
The interesting thing is, we have hardly seen any advertising for them on you tube in Australia. Bought ours after seeing a fellow you tuber using them who is based in the UK. Up until the day that we purchased these, we were using $30 cheap knock offs and having to replace them and the 18650 batteries 3 to 4 times per year...We spent more in a year on 4 of the cheap ones each per year than we have on the Olights.

Thank you for the video Vanessa, I have to disagree with you however on the Olights. I have many Olights, all of which I have paid for myself. I have not had any problems with any of them. I own 20 or so Olights and have been carrying an S30R Baton 2 every day for the past 5 years. Still using the original battery, everyday for work. I have Olights by my bedside, in my cars, in my get home bags, on most of my rifles and handguns, and on my person every day and I have not had any problems with any of them. Sure, I have to clean the charging contacts with alchohol wipes occassionally, but that is to be expected. When I grab one of these Olights I know its going to work for me, thats what I have come to expect from Olight. Just bought two of the Olight globes yesterday, cant wait to get those in the mail. I dont have a youtube channel or anything, but I can tell you that I dont really look at other brands of flashlights anymore. Its Olight for me.

I've carried a fenix flashlight every day for nearly a decade, the same one. It's working as well now as it did when I bought it. Its been dropped and soaked.
If I lost this one I wouldn't hesitate replacing it with the same flashlight.
I was looking at that batton 3, its £99. so I have held off buying it. The best thing about it is the battery life and that it recharges in its case. I was considering picking one up to keep in a bag or emergency kit.

Both are dependable and rugged lights. So far they are still working great. Extremely bright and dependable. I especially like them being rechargeable I've been meaning to get a solar charger. And they seem rugged and I have used them repeatedly for the time I've had them. It's a great flashlight so far.

Thanks Vanessa for sharing your experience. I personally have a few Olights. One of my complaints is that accessories don't work across the platform, so you need a specific accessory for a specific light. In your experience what is a good flashlight brand? I know you mentioned Maglite but I've had problems with those, as well.

  • @Flashahol
    @Flashahol 2 года назад +4

First thing: Most flashlights problems happen because of dirty contacts. Try cleaning the contacts with rubbing alcohol, both positive and negative, the end of the spring AND tube endings and threads (everything in the current path). I've had this happen more times than I can count, even with my vaporizer.
Even the best flashlight can let you down for many reasons. I go by the rule of two is one and one is none, so I always carry 2 flashlights and one headlamp as a minimum.

Personally, I suspect anyone that wants to give me something "free", and such offers always cause me to ask why that person wants to give me whatever it is they are offering. Cynical, perhaps, but in my view I am being more pragmatic than anything else. I have O Light flashlights and have had no issues with them. They have functioned as expected, even under moderate abuse in a variety of conditions. I am not a RUclipsr, nor did I receive the lights for "free". I had a bad experience with olight. They sent me a light and they just wanted control of my video and even want me to promote on my personal FB page. I got annoyed and told I don’t want to do the affiliate program and the rep went NUTS saying I’m a liar and rip off. When I made a video for a free 15 bucks light? That take me weeks to make. And they promised me multiple lights. They gave me a keychain one that I gave away to a subscriber.
They are super aggressive in marketing because they want to cut out the middle man which the rep admit to me. They want to sell direct for max profits with RUclipsrs as the sales people. RUclipsrs want just the affiliate cut.
Their products are average. They don’t test them enough. They look for the next gimmick to sale.

I have several Maglites over 20 years old, and you can still get all the spares, and some conversion/upgrade parts have even been available (although I don't think they still are).
An LED conversion for a triple D cell? No problem. Convert it to take 26650s in parallel with intermediating boards to prevent series (10.5-12.6v) operation but give a massive 13,000mAh capacity? Bring it on! Combined, those give about double the power and 3 times the runtime over the original specification, and it is slightly lighter with 26650s than D-cells. I only remember (or rather can check) the age because I bought it when I was taxi-driving and my most recent taxi licence expired at the end of December 2000! I also have several double AA sized and single AAA (keychain) types, all of that age or more. Cheaper, in the long run, to buy it once in a lifetime than replace it every couple of years, and less wasteful.
Not only is it in perfect working order but has even been upgraded over the years. Olight would much rather you buy a whole new one.
Technically, it is an offence in the UK to carry anything designed for use as a weapon, and the triple D-cell Maglite was a popular way around this among taxi drivers, who cannot predict who will hail them (that is what they are there for) and will inevitably end up carrying a lot of cash by the end of their shift (unless most calls have been on cards, but this was less common back then). This means that robberies are (or were) unfortunately fairly common, and often violent (one of my immediate colleagues had his throat cut). Of course, you have it so that you can illuminate house numbers up long driveways when looking for an address, which gives a perfectly good justification for carrying it. The fact that it could kill if wielded in self-defence is incidental but useful (so could a walking stick or crutches). My colleague saved his own life due to the fact that he had fast reactions and his Maglite was within reach in his door pocket, and his attacker was still there, unconscious when the police and ambulance arrived. The police wrote it up that he had detained the suspect using reasonable and proportionate force.
If he'd had an Olight I doubt if he'd be around to tell of it.
I'd already suspected that Olight weren't all they were claiming, because, well, physics!

In our outdoor camp we started with 10 O-light headlamps, during the first camp 4 broke down during normal use (with a smell from burned electronics inside).
In most cases it's electronics from the light regulator, I opened one and the electronic parts were completely burned.

Vanessa it's happening across the board from flashlights, padlocks, multi-tools and especially the electronics. We're getting ripped off. It's junk. No quality control. In fact things don't even last long enough can make it through the 30-day window so I return all of the bad ones 50% of them to get a refund. I even had a a run around with Amazon explaining that I don't buy things to return them. As far as your Channel, I need to get caught up with your videos, because unlike the products your videos are definitely worth watching. Thank God there's something still made with good integrity that would be your videos. Catch you later. Always a thumbs up.

Hi Vanessa! :) "Alone in the dark", it was the first PC game I played in this quality of sound ane graph. I don't play on the computer. I never liked it. You just brought back the memories of the atmosphere of these games. On the PC in the 90's, without audio and video drivers, PC games were a nightmare. This one was unique because it worked in both 3D and sound. Scary and wonderful. It's nice to see you as a participant in the action.

Same with hand tools. Old US made SK and Craftsmen tools found at yard sales and flea markets are real cheap and indestructible. Old Mag Lites, if not battery damaged, are still the best in my experience.

Great information on those expensive flashlights. Thank you for posting. I have used (2) Ozark trail flashlights that I bought from my Daytona Beach, FL Walmart 5 years ago. Price was $17 each. Both still work.

Hi Vanessa, I found this video extremely interesting, and admire your honesty and integrity, and you've told them in no uncertain terms, 'this lady's not for turning'! I'm really surprised you've got so many failed flashlights, considering there's not that much to go wrong, more so if they're rechargeable, but I can't tell which type they are. I'm assuming they're not Lithium Ion, as these are extremely reliable, not like nic-cads, which need constant recharging when not in use! Stand up and be counted! is the motto. good on you.🌹💗🌹

I've been having issues with olight lately as well. Seems the tail switch on a few different models have been shorting out or malfunctioning. Thanks for this video.

As someone who repairs electronics I would make sure no dust or debris has collected in the tail switch, especially if it is magnetic. Try blowing it out to clean it.

I have owned the Baton 2 which worked amazing the first 2 weeks, and after that it just refused to turn on after running in High mode for a minute.
Now I have a Seeker 2, and so far (fingers crossed) it has worked amazingly well! - Hopefully the 2 doesn't stand for 2 weeks...

Wow that’s shocking! I thought they had a good reputation they certainly have a excellent torch price tag, I guess that’s helps create the false impression. I nearly bought one a while ago but bought a thru nite catapult V6 instead, it’s still going strong but I reviewed it on RUclips so now I’m wondering if it might just break now 🤣🤣 Iv got a trusty mag lite in the cupboard but no pockets big enough to carry it! 🤣🤣👍

I always thought olight was overrated so I didn't get one. Finally got a used Sr1 a couple years ago and it's been working exceptionally. I've also purchased their smaller AA/AAA lights, and the olight pen, and they all work great. Only issue I had was with their garbage ink cartridges, which they sent me new ones for free, and have since updated the ink cartridge. I've seen Cutlery Lover have an issue with a newer olight, but it got swapped out. Another actual issue is their advertised lumens vs actual output, but that's an issue with plenty of flashlight companies.
Personally, I've seen so many people use their lights (sponsored or not) and have heard mostly good things.
The only light company I've had consistent issues from is Nitecore. All but one of their products I've bought has malfunctioned with very minimal use.
