We thank you for coming to us today, even with all the unforeseen circumstances, such as adverse weather conditions in a practical and friendly way. I'm not much of a camper but camping next to the lake is awesome because of the water. You're a very equipped professional woman in outdoor living. I enjoy watching your videos that show survival skills. Merry Christmas, happy new year, happy Vanessa, and good health and peace to all 🇺🇸💖🎄🦅

It's not generally the strength of the trees. It usually depends on things like how rapidly the temperature dropped, how much snow fell (and if the snow is wet and heavy), and how strong the winds were. Pine trees are particularly susceptible to bursting from the sap flash freezing and expanding. Recent droughts, or excessive rains can also be contributing factors.

      Hello Vanessa,
Here in British Columbia we have had similar or worse damage from snow when wet and sometimes almost a Meter in 24 hours. Mostly though from storms, like beginning of November last year which did incredible damage with wind at 98 km per hour. The highway was impassible for most of the day, one man was stopped in front of massive trees on road and rear ended my a logging truck, crushed to death. Half km from our house (yurt). Wishing you and family a wonderful Christmas. Give your dog a hug from my 2 huskies.

Hi! I'm from Spain and here we have something similar. It's called "hydric stress". In summer there was a hard drought and trees suffered. I've seen trees losing their leaves in August! Now in December some of those trees are very weak and they cannot sustain any weight, so with snow they break and fall.
I am pleased that you keep your interesting videos and your happiness, despite the difficult situation you had recently. I hope everything goes much better and you soon forget about it.
    Wish you all the best!

Vanessa. So happy for you that your cabin was not damaged in the snow storm. I know how much time you have spent to get it in a state that you can stay in it for some days. As you said you still have lot of work to do til your cabin is way you want. I remember times sleeping in the woods and how often we came across fallen trees. Best part is you were not in the cabin when all these trees came down and possibly harm you. Can't wait to start seeing more days of you at the cabin and in the woods bushcrafting. Ich Liebe Dich SOOOO !!!!

Your trees are not too weak, they are too old and too tall, I have a cabin in North West Wisconsin a Boreal Rain Forest always bring a chain saw due to the natural life cycle of trees. Every year we have wind damage from winds exceeding 100 to 130 KPH Last winter the total snow fall was 475cm.

    • @ryanfriars545
      @ryanfriars545 10 месяцев назад +2

Too old and too tall? It because of the snow load most likely. She even states they don’t get snow like they did in the last snowfall. The high wind speed doesn’t help either.

@@WheresWaldo05 Tell it to the Baileys Harbor Boreal Forest and Wetlands. The problem is that the Wisconsin ice cap is melting. In Green Bay, the Packers keep falling into sink holes in the tundra during practice. Plus, the state capitol igloo has slumped so much it isn't safe to go inside.

I'm from BC Canada, we have lots of snow, and lots of trees, of all kinds. Pine, cedar and fir. The trees are ok as long as it doesn't melt than freeze. Its the ice that breaks the trees. They are frozen so it doesn't take much to break them. If there is lots of snow on the branches it get very heavy. The trees will break and fall over, especially if the wind blows hard.
Our forest look very much like what your seeing, but much worse. The trees are often so thick you can't walk threw it. Not like your forest where it looks like the trees has been planted. The trees are so nicely spaced, and you can see a fair distance. In BC, especial on the coast, its packed really thick.
Love your cabin in the woods.

Dearest Vanessa, Wow where does one start. I love your forest cabin it look quite comfortable from what you showed of it. Thank goodness the trees left it alone undamaged. to try and answer your question about Norway and such places I think the damage would be the same maybe if not worse, but its part of their living conditions so they are used to it, and maybe not news worthy. I am also glad your car was not parked in its usual place I think it would now be a squashed car lol. Seriously I am glad you and your children were nowhere near that forest when the storm hit, and Thank goodness your all fit and well. Wishing you a very special Christmas and a much happier New year. Berchtesgaden got lots of snow & Garmisch also got tons of snow. I went on a trip off a tributary of the Rhine river in a raft for one week in June. To my knowledge, heavy wet snow causes that type of tree damage, no matter where it falls. This is why so many people create a clearing around a forest cabin, a safe distance from the highest tree in the perimeter if it were to fall in that direction. Don't be fooled, those snow-laden branches above your cabin could fall and puncture the roof, picturesque as they may be. Stay safe!

Here in washington state USA on the western slope of the cascade mountains several trees are brought down every winter either by excessive snowfall or wind storms knocking out power and blocking roads. most everyone i know who has lived here for more than a few years has a chain saw in their truck in case the road is blocked, 4x4s are a must also. I think your trees in Germany are just as likely to damage as ours and look like the same species too so don't think your trees are any weaker lol. great photography Vanessa, looks just like my back yard...

Glad your cabin (and you) are OK after the storm. Here in the USA, heavy wet snows or lots of ice from freezing rain that slowly builds up on the lines and branches often down our power lines (which can also "explode" transformers), tree branches and even big trees -- especially with high winds. Often, high winds (possibly "down bursts" which are localized rather than a wide area). Tornadoes are less common in the winter. I'm sure many other commenters will say the same.
"A stone dropped from my heart" sounds a lot like "a weight has lifted from my shoulders" here in the US.
Your cabin is in a beautiful location.

Near the Gulf of Mexico in Southern United States and we very rarely have snow but we have hurricanes that will knock trees down. One particular storm came through and just stopped over us with us being about 4 miles from the eye wall in the north-east quadrant so we got pounded for hours and trees were falling all around and onto our house. When it was done we were trapped in our home because of all the trees. It took a while for them to get to us but we couldn't get out of our driveway for almost a week. Other areas it wasn't so bad and one of the workers who came to help clear us out said that it looked like the whole storm did all of it's damage right here at our house. Happy to see your cabin is still standing! Still loving your videos!

Hello from BC, Canada. We have vast expanses of forests, natural and planted. The planted groves tend to be more vulnerable to wind and snow load due in part to their faster growth which results in a weaker stem/ trunk and root system.

  • @michaelfritz8725

I'm from eastern United States it happens here too, the trees there are ok. Some looked dead but others it was just the added weight from the weather, like the video you said from your neighbor I think where it was at the cabin and trees were bent. Some of the trees that were snapped had too much extra weight from the snow and because how tall they are it made them snap. Others that are ripped out I would think it could be part from the weight of the snow part from wind blew them over. It's a healthy woodland. I am glad your cabin is alright.

I agree those trees are old and very tall and also quite thin because they are growing so close together that none of them are getting much light. I live in woods with trees like that and get very worried during blizzards and hurricanes with high winds because we've had bad experiences with the trees coming down though fortunately no one was hurt. If the snow is wet and heavy it makes them top heavy for their height and they can snap. It looks like you had a little tornado the way the branches are every which way. And evergreen trees have tiny roots in comparison to their height so they can easily be uprooted. It's better to be an oak than an evergreen! Glad your cabin was ok !

  • @TheSaneHatter

I understand EXACTLY what you're describing with the trees: we have similar problems here in Austin, Texas.
Our city has generously planted trees all over, because of the advantages of shade. But none of them are very cold-resistant tress, being species like hackberries or Southern live oaks. And not only are they coming out of several years of drought, but they haven't been pruned back enough becuase the maintenance department is understaffed. So this past winter, when they froze over with ice, they started breaking and falling onto the power lines, knocking out lights all over the city.

We have something like this that happens in Washington state. We get a thinning wind, the temperature drops so fast that it caused the sap to freeze in the trees, and when that happens you hear what sounds like gun shots all night as the branches and the trees themselves just bust off and break apart. First time I saw it happen there hadn't been a thinning wind freeze in over 10 yrs, and we lived in the middle of the woods around a lake. Was interesting to say the least. From that day on I didn't go anywhere during the winter without at least an ax in the vehicle.

Wow, Vanessa! You are so lucky nothing hit your cabin! I know the exact way that you feel, having a cabin of my own that I care deeply about. From an optimist point of view, you have a TON of firewood now! From a pessimist view, shit! I have a lot of work to do cutting all of this firewood up! What is definite, though, is that all of that wood needs to be cut and split, especially anything near your cabin, just for safety. Any tree that is damaged that looks like just a stick coming out of the ground need to go first since they pose the most risk, but you seem to have SO MUCH on the ground to cut at your leisure.
I live in the southeastern USA, so we rarely get any snow, but wind and ice can damage trees to the same point where you find yourself at now. My own woods near my cabin is always at risk, and we have mostly eastern pine with a handful of strong oaks mixed in. I am always fearing the branches or entire pine trees coming down and hurting either myself or my cabin, to the point that if I stay outside of the cabin under a tarp, even in summer time, I tie multiple ropes overhead to diffuse some of the energy of a branch falling on me in my sleep. I hear them falling all the time around me, and it's a very scary experience.
I grew up in the north outside of Chicago, and I know what a real snowfall looks and feels like. What you are experiencing is quite normal from an American standpoint.
That said, I wish you and yours well, and a very lovely and Merry Christmas! Much love from the USA! ❤🤍💙

In the GB we have loads of problems with snow fall Vanessa because we only seem to do something about it only after it snow's which causes problems of mainly of travelling to and from places.
I'm glad for you Vanessa nothing happened to the fox hut in this terrible snow storm, I think this has happened because there has been a lack of forest management in the forest area where you are , like the trees are growing to close together and dead trees 🌳 have not been taken down all this can cause serious problems Vanessa.
Norway 🇳🇴 and Sweden 🇸🇪 which are more prone to bad snow storms have probly more understanding of these type of storm problems and have proper knowledge management over those storm problems.

Drought and disease are spreading more than it used to.. also, the Winter's are so mild and warm, it never allows the ground to completely freeze up and stay frozen... The temperature fluctuates so much that the ground is pushing the root system right out of the ground? Freezing And thawing, freezing and thawing, over and over... Then, ice storms happening brings the trees down... Or, just high winds. We're definitely not having a normal Winter Season anymore... It's solid proof of Global warming.

    Yes , Excellent Video , V !
Im glad to see you did not suffer catastrophic damage to the Cabin , even as the forest suffered such devastation ...
I love your cultural references ; the Childs Game in the US is called Pick Up Sticks , where the object is to remove one without disturbing the others ...
I love that one , "a stone dropped from my heart " ❤
Do you depart from the cabin while leaving the candles to burn ?
Does the Puppy Dog break off the chase and will he cease running if you say , " Doggie , Come ! " ??
You should keep doing what you you are doing , it agrees with you ❤😊
Keep up your good work ✌

Hi Vanessa. Greetings from Sweden. As someone else from Sweden already commented about the trees, we dont get that many tree fells just from snowing, but from storms. And that many trees as in "your" wood that have fallen is not normal even here in Sweden, unless there's a really powerful storm.
I'm glad your cabin is still there, unharmed. Take care and be safe.

It seems pretty normal for a heavy snow. I’m in northern United States and we had worse last year. I have a tiny trail to search for mushrooms and had to make a new path around the fallen trees. Luckily what I take that path for never really grew there. Maybe in a few years something new will tho. Glad your cabin is safe. Lots of clean up and free wood in the spring is seems

We have been dealing with this for a while on the east coast of the US. Between dutch elm disease and the emerald ash borer whole forests have been wiped out. The ash borer is killing off all of the White Birch trees it's completely changing the land scape. NO more winter pictures of New England with the white birch in the background.

So many trees have lichen on them here in New England, once that starts they die shortly after.

Looks like the forest is a dangerous place to be during heavy storms. Looks like luck was on your side, Vanessa.

I've seen wet snow and ice storms do that kind of damage to all different aged trees 200 year old trees totally uprooted and toppled. Wet snow and ice are no joke! that stuff can add hundreds of pounds to branches and trees and cause all kinds of damage! I'm glad your cabin remains untouched!

Sorry about the length of this but I do have some experience living in multiple climates in my life time.
I live in a part of America that is very similar in winter weather as you have described there. Washington in the Pacific Northwest. It mostly rains in the winter but rarely snows. Exactly as you said. A maybe few centimeters at night and gone by mid morning. Last year we had no snow at all. We also have very tall conifer trees. Western Red Cedar and Douglas Fir. A few years ago we had a snow overnight of 60-70 centimeters. A very rare event here. It happens only every 7 or 8 years or more. It destroyed many trees and completely shut down the city. At night power went off and you could hear trees snapping, sometimes very close. We were stuck at home for a few days because there was so much debris on the roads. It did make for a beautiful peaceful walk through the snow in a city without movement. Thank God nothing damaged our house or our neighbors. The trees here are not used to the stress caused by weight of snow. Especially a very wet snow. They have no built tolerance for it.
I grew up in a part of America with very much snow throughout the winter. It is not unusual to snow 40-90 centimeters per week, sometimes in one day. That could go on for months at a time. I rarely saw trees damaged from snow there. When plants are exposed to stresses continually, they become stronger to be able to endure adverse weather conditions. A good example of this is if you have many indoor plants, it is recommended to run a fan to help the plants grow stronger.
I am wondering, do the trees there break often in strong wind? Also how tall are your trees generally? They appear to be around 18 meters. Our trees here will also break in strong wind because it so rarely is windy. There are thick forests that slow and disperse wind but occasionally we will have a wind storm. It is terrifying watching the trees above our house bow and bend violently in the wind.
It may also be beneficial to clear trees around the cabin. This would also help incase of fire. I know that is not ideal because being tucked away in the trees is sort of the point.
Im glad your cabin is safe and that you were not there at the time. It would have been terrifying being stuck there and hearing trees snapping off all around you!

Hi Vanessa. I'm sorry that your beautiful forest received so much damage. I live in Maine, in the USA, and last weekend after receiving 8 inches of heavy, wet snow, we then got 2-4 inches of rain. The snow was so heavy that my evergreen trees were damaged, but the worst part of my experience this week has been the flooding of my basement from all the wet snow and rain. This caused flooding because the ground hadn't frozen yet. For the past 3 days (and nights) I've been running my sump pump, but water just keeps coming in as fast as I can pump it out. I'm getting weary, and have to wonder if this is the 'new normal' as far as what to expect with our climate changing. I hope soon you'll have your woods cleared of damage so you can once more enjoy the warmth and coziness of your little cabin in the woods. Please take care. We all love you.

As bad as it is with all the fallen trees, there is a silver lining to this. In the spring and summer months you have the opportunity to gather more firewood for next winter, unless it is the property of others who have a legal lien to the land. I'm wishing you and your family a very grand Christmas, and a New Year to welcome in!

A normal tree/snow event here in The South of US. It usually looks like bombs have blown everything up there are so many trees down where I live. A couple of years ago simple wind knocked down all the trees in my front yard! I had planted them 25 years before so I was completely devastated!!
