  • Far away from Venezuela's capital Caracas lies a coastal town struggling to feed itself. Cradled in the Gulf of Paria, the town survives on fishing, but almost everything else is smuggling to its shores from neighbouring Trinidad.
    With no end in sight to the country's political and economic crises under President Nicolas Maduro, Jhan Lopez is growing more desperate by the day.
    The 28-year-old fisherman and his family had expected that the government would continue to send food and other necessities to his town, but nothing has arrived in months and Jhan has lost faith that it ever will.
    A single-father, Jhan is looking for alternative means to provide for his daughter and diabetic father and decides to try and join the smuggling trade, but many challenges lie between him and the sacks of rice and medicine that he badly needs.
    ------------------------

    YES there is an influx of Venezuelans here in Trinidad but they are our neighbours, yes we have always had strained relations but they are our neigbours. We Trinis went to Caracas and margarita to shop years before. They need our help, we are in a recession but we live more comfortably than most.

    I'm from Trinidad. We're facing our own problems. High prices, poor economy, unstable governments, out of control crime, poor Healthcare ethnic tensions, lack of foreign exchange and unemployment. Our borders are barely patrolled. Now we have a massive influx of Venezuelans to deal with.

      Prayers from Canada 🇨🇦, we see the news and can't believe how horrible things have gotten for Venezuela, and Trinadad, by the sounds of it. When people are without food they become desperate and do things Morally questionable. I'm sure Venezuelans don't mean to impose, but they're suffering and desperate, and unfortunately when people become desperate they do criminal acts (when The same person maybe 10 years ago would've never thought about doing crime.) but because they are desperate, they are doing the unimaginable!! Is it right? No. I can understand when it comes to feeding your family people will go to extremes to get their needs met. I feel sorry for both Trinidad and Venezuela,. But I understand why things are happening the way they are. That man was risking his life to feed his daughter, may God bless him and Venezuela 🇻🇪😢

      What you have said about the Venezuelan leadership may be true ... but why are you blaming the ordinary Venezuelan (you wrote "Venezuelans have taken advantage of our goodwill")?
      Are you saying we should turn a blind eye to the suffering of the children, the sick and the poor?
      As for "undocumented" where did you get this figure from?

    Years ago, I used to watch this kind of documentary from another countries were in war times. Now, being a Venezuelan that lives a few hours trip from the location where this was filmed, I can say, without a shadow of doubt that what the protagonist is doing is not far from the truth. We, Venezuelans, struggling to live because the politicians we trusted almost 19 years ago, decided to take a route they though it was good. Good for them, but not for the common people. All this disgrace thanks to... well, you know who, the deceased and the bus driver.

    I am from Trinidad. Law-abiding Venezuelans who need mercy in Trinidad should be given a break. I can't get Trinis to work as labourers. These Vennies mix concrete, clean drains, mow lawns. Their service is needed. We can't help all, but we can allow some on temporary work permits. Besides, T&T has a long relationship with the people in Venezuela. Trinis marry and live there, and Vennies marry and live here. This has been going on for hundreds of years. We have business relations too...Bermudez Biscuit Company, Angostura Bitters etc.

    When society completely breaks down like this, no one has the luxury of being charitable or kind. When your focus is keeping body and soul together, you’ll no longer care about what happens to your neighbors, as long as you get what you and yours need. I don’t judge them. It’s happened throughout history all over the world. This didn’t happen overnight, and it won’t be fixed that way either.

    I saw this again tonight on Al Jazeera, and unfortunately, things have gotten much worse for the Venezuelans. I'm a true Trinidadian, and I have absolutely no problem helping any that is trying to support and protect their families. Venezuela has rescued Trinidad twice over the decades when we were on the brink of economic collapse. It is fitting that we should be prepared to repay this debt to the people of Venezuela now. For those citizenry of my country, ask yourselves why we cannot help, when we have more than 400,000 people from Africa, India, China, and Caribbean Nations working in TT and expating the Fx as many are claiming. Many of those countries are not our neighbours, and many of the Caribbean countries mentioned, have never stepped in, to assist us when we needed it. There is no reason we cannot help Venezuelans now when they need it the most, absolutely no reason not to help !

      Akhmad Hervani Venezuela owes almost every major seed and fertilizer company on the planet. Getting any into the country would be almost impossible. They completely destroyed their commercial agricultural industry when they seized the land from people who knew how to run the business and gave it to people who had no clue. Thus, the food shortage. The same with their healthcare. The country owes millions to pharmaceutical companies that will no longer sell to them.

      This is what happened in Zimbabwe and is happening now in South Africa. Steal the land from farmers and give to goverment lackies who do not know how to grow food. Farming is not easy people. You dont just put seeds in the ground and food magically appears. Now everyone starves.

      Supermarkets not having food and Venezuelans not being able to buy it DOES NOT mean the country doesn't have food. The food is there, but the inflation is so huge that pretty much nobody can afford it, not even simple stuff like bread. With the money they need to spend to buy a kilogram of flour or rise, they used to build a whole house less than a decade ago!! That's how insane it is there!

    • @mikejackson8963
      @mikejackson8963 5 лет назад +1

      If Inflation prevents you from being able to buy the food then there is no food available. Eventually, the stores cant replace due to hyper-inflation. 50 percent of gdp is oil. Venezuela based its gov spending or budget as if oil was going to stay at 85$ per barrel. Oil is around 40$ per barrel plus they arent getting as much oil as they used to out of ground due to lack of reinvestment. Compounding the problem exponentially. Do the math... voila hyperinflation.

    • @freeculture
      @freeculture 6 лет назад +1

      Are you implying every single Venezuelan in Trinidad is a criminal? Because I saw many doing honest work, hiding from police because they are all overstaying, no thanks to the socialist gov of Venezuela making it impossible to renew a passport, among other documents needed to formally get a job abroad. Furthermore these people are often exploited and abused, women get raped and killed and many don't report it out of fear of being deported, bad trini people take advantage of them. You had rising criminality before Venezuela collapsed (about 5 years ago). Did you not read the news about the Venezuelan 13yo girl sold as "bride" to a trini man? Criminals are criminals no matter their nationality. Fact is both countries have poor border control, and this pirate activity is the proof. Being an island nation, one would think you would have a much better coast guard presence, among other things.
      Those people you are judging are running desperate to their closest neighbor, Venezuela has collapsed and they are emigrating en masse. There is a humanitarian crisis and its not Trinidad & Tobago alone, all the neighbors, such as Brazil and Colombia have been hit hard by waves of Venezuelans desperately fleeing or finding a one month job in a neighbor country that would let them bring food home for the next year. Canada is even funding refugee camps in Brazil because it overwhelmed the local government.
      And you can laugh but i know of a Venezuelan getting mugged in Port of Spain, losing 10000 TTD in the process right in front of the Water Terminal security cameras, and yet the police was unable to spot the crime, which was reported a couple of hours after it happened. Those thieves were not Venezuelan at all...

    Once again, Al Jazeera brings us the stories that never seem to get told. Many thanks for this documentary.
    To all those selfish, callous Dog in the Manger types who are dissing the poor refugees - when T&T finds itself in a similar situation in the aftermath of a major earthquake, hurricane or social implosion and a descent into anarchy - I want to see you turned away when you go seeking refuge or asylum in Uncle Sam's country, and sent back packing to Sweet T&T.
    The UN says there are over 2 000 000 Venezuelans who have fled the country as refugees. What is 50 000 (if so much) in T&T? The other 1 950 000 Venezuelan refugees are mainly in Colombia and other Latin American countries all the way down to Chile.
    I remember a piece Al Jazeera did on March 1, 2018 showing a Venezuelan mother and her son as they WALKED the 200 kms from the Venezuelan/ Brazilian border to Boa Vista in Brazil.

      First of we're out of the hurricane alley and very rarely do we suffer disasters. Also we're usually the ones that pick up the slack for the rest of the Caribbean islands so we don't need anyone else to babysit.Also that's easy for you to say in your ivory tower. You're not the one that has to deal with the crime they bring and no I'm not being bias most of our crime can be linked backed to Venezuela. Most if not all the guns and drugs come from there. We also have our own economic problems to deal with so it's not like we have money to toss around. It's easy for foreigners to tell us to give aid but it's not like we even have the money to give. WE're not broke poor but it's really tight at the moment so don't act high and mighty just because you think you're a charitable person. We have our own circumstances.

    Someone fooled him, coals are not "in demand" in Trinidad, it is only used for barbequing. He wasted his money in thinking that he could sell it to buy food to trade for a fairer cost to those in need. Even the way he went to board the boat to take him across to Trinidad, usually a boat will transport lots of people and not just one person, it is not worth the effort. Either this film was done for viewership or some other reason, buying coals to trade for money to buy food and a boat transporting one person just does not add up.

    This is happening in Venezuela because there was always a large disparity between the rich and the poor and a very small middle class. The rich had no regard for the poor and they kept getting richer the conditions were ripe for somrone like Chavez to come in and take over. The rich left and went to the US or to Canada or to other south american nations and the poor once again was left to try to survive.
