  • Every year, more than 13,000 people are deported from the United States to El Salvador. Many are returning to a country they have not seen in years.
They must locate family, find work and stay alive in the capital, San Salvador, a city with one of the highest murder rates in the world.
Recently deported Dilan, 18, returns to one of the most dangerous neighbourhoods on the outskirts of the capital, controlled by the notorious MS-13 gang.
After his first week back, Dilan meets Juan Martin, a recruiter for the country's booming call centre industry. Juan encourages Dilan to start life anew like the tens of thousands of deportees employed by call centres. But first Dilan needs to secure a Salvadoran ID.
Hundreds of thousands of Salvadorans face a similar fate as the Trump administration's deadline to cancel their Temporary Protected Status is set for September 2019.

All our black youth have a similar struggle with gangs or prison Hispanics with gangs or deportation. We really gotta smarten up and change how we play this rigged game called life. but instead of complaining about it we are going to have to learn to play the game by the the rules set out for us or help mAke it more fair

I visited El Salvador with a Salvadorean friend in late 2005, and I have to say that I have a lot of respect for their people. It's a beautiful country, and their people are kind and hard-working. It's the criminals that bring their country down. Hopefully, with this new president, who seems like a real visionary, things will change for the better for El Salvador.

If Americans were to stop being drug addicts there would be no drug dealer to buy the drug Cartels drug supplies, than the Cartels would have no money to corrupt the Latin American governments. If the American Arms dealers would stop selling guns, bullets, other weapons and military supplies to the gangs and Cartels it would help to stop all the killings. Furthermore, this is what the U.S. government can do: 1. Ban American Arms dealers from doing business with the Cartels and street gangs to help stopped the killings. 2. Stop supporting governments who violate their own citizens human rights and use the power of sanctions to enforce human rights in these oppress countries as well as help bring corrupt government officials to justice. 3. Get more aggressive with the American dug addicts than and the American Drug dealers we would have no immigration refugee crisis.

Michelle Bearse There are many cases of people just not knowing these resources exist. Once his parents found work after arriving in the US when he was a child, they may have just stuck to their routines and concerned themselves only with work. Often Salvadoran parents believe having their kids enrolled American schools will give their children all the skills they need to succeed. But not all schools are created equal. Dilan’s case is not unique to him.

Dilan is going through a major cultural shock, he has not even started to realize what is really going on in his life, and that is super sad. He is likely to end up enrolling into a gang, he already has the age, looks, attitude, resentment and to top it off, he is living in a gang controlled community. He also lacks pretty much all the skills (socially, professionally, cognitive, emotionally, etc.) to survive in El Salvador. Crime will embrace him if he is not guided correctly. Who knows if he was also already involved in crime back in the States.
What really upsets me is this murky guy Juan Martin, messing up with Dilan's head and seeing a dollar sign in his forehead to fill up a seat in his low tier call center. I advocate for the call center industry in El Salvador, it has given me a job and a career for the past 11 years; and I want to clarify that the main, bigger and more serious call centers do not use these shady and tacky recruitment tactics. Also, the scene around 21:00 is sooo staged, with him driving near "La Dina", that is actually Colonia Monserrat and he drives next to a police station and a kindergarten at 21:10, it is not as dangerous as he portrays it, at least not around that block. If he is so worried is either because he sympathizes with a rival gang or he owes something to someone.
Anyways, it is sad to see someone with Dilan's profile and upsetting how other older deportees try to take advantage of these phenomena around deportation and El Salvador reality.

I see so many critical comments on here. Dilan is only 18 and, although he has lived in the US most of his life, don't assume he has had it easy and should magically be mature, hard-working and highly competent in various things. "Grow up, move on, get a job..." To develop you must have access to supportive spaces and people to inspire you and mentor you. It isn't everyone that has the desire to pick up a book or sign up to courses or whatnot to better themselves. If no one around you is doing that and if you feel alone with no one to really share with what you are feeling (or if you don't even know that talking about how you feel is an option), you will stagnate. "Take pride in your country!" How is this even his country? If he has no memories of it and his family left because they found the environment dangerous/unsupportive/unfit for their child why should he feel any pride? He will only feel fear until people will really start caring and teaching him real skills instead of pushing him into some soulless call centre job. Pride is learning the skills of your ancestors, their language, their traditions and cuisine... I don't see anyone in this trying to help him discover any of that. El Salvador is so beautiful with a rich heritage, but, as so many countries, it privileges the capitalistic system instead of sustainable community development. Governments need to realize that people are important; happy, healthy people create prosperous countries where everyone has what they need. Much more that I could write here, but in the end we must focus on people and help each other and make our communities stronger.

Same here, I was as clueless as Dilan at his age. Looking back now as a full grown adult, I realize you just don’t know it all at 18. With time, you gain social/work skills, confidence, and speaking skills as you grow into adulthood. He’ll be a totally different person at 30 years old.
