Stunning images
Thanks @fifthimagez !
Fantastic review Kathy. Thanks for your perspective and the succinct way you presented your review. A breathe of fresh air on RUclips!
Thanks, @jamiyawilson. I'm glad you liked my information and style. It was nice of you to stop and make a comment. Thanks!!
This is by far the best ones I ever enjoyed. Comparing both cameras with only photography not videos specs. Well done 🎉
Thanks, @cregner. Glad you liked it!1
excellent review
Some lovely birds there too Kathy.
Thanks!!
I agree I bought one as a 2nd body to my R5 and I am using it all the time with a 600 F4, 100 to 500 and the 800 F11 which is quite good on the R6
Thanks for the comment! Glad you agree with me!
As you know I've been shooting the Canon R5 and loving it except for high ISO noise. I hated to lose the 45 MP of the R5, but as you suggested, I did try out the R6ii. I bought it and have been very happy with it so far. I found out pretty quickly that I had to upgrade my SD cards. I used the CF Express cards in my R5, but the R6ii has only SD slots. My old SD cards were way too slow for the camera. I had lock-ups and BUSY messages when it was writing to the slow card. With the latest, fastest SD card, the camera is amazing. No more lock-ups and no more waiting for it to write to the card. Now my only problem is that I can shoot hundreds of images in a few minutes. 😂 It takes forever to look through them. Thanks so much for your reviews of these Canon mirrorless cameras.
Good overview. Yes, the R6ii need good SD cards. Luckily, these aren't super expensive right now. There are a lot of images to review with a camera this good. Totally agree! Thanks!!
I have shot with Canon 1D series cameras for years and also the 5D series. I still have a 5D4 for a second camera and use my R6 Mk 11 as my main camera and love it. Nice video and Thank you!
Thanks @nickbristol3457. I appreciate the comment. The R6 Mark II is a nice camera!
I bought a R7 and used it with the 100-500 and RF800/F11 for birds around my country property. I have really enjoyed it and bought a R6 mark ii to try. Initially, I was hit with some disappointment because the loss in range going from aps-c to full frame was dramatic. Then going from 32 megapixels of the R7 to the 24 of the R6m2 was also a blow. I knew the specs going into it but sometimes you have to experience it for yourself. Then I tested the two taking a pic of my daughter outside after sunset when the light was low and wow what a difference the R6m2 had over the R7 then. It was so much cleaner. I have been using the two switching back and forth and for me the autofocus seems very similar for still birds anyway. I am keeping the R6m2 and think they do compliment each other in many ways. If I had to only pick one I would probably stick with the R7. I love that extra range. I just have to be sneakier when using the R6m2 to get a little closer. That is my 2 cents anyway. :^)
I agree with you on the R7 and R6 Mark II comparisons. Both are excellent cameras. They just have different uses. Thanks for the posting!!
I‘m doing dancephotography and made the same experience, when I‘ve tested both at the same time. Thanks for sharing!
Amazing that it's same even in dance! Thanks for sharing your experience, @ChrisWaikikiFotograf. Appreciate it!
Exceptional information & beautiful bird shots, thank you for sharing! I've been enjoying my R6ii, still dialing it in for my backyard bird shots. Hummingbirds are my favorite to capture at the feeders.
If You could please share your preferred settings, I'm sure many of us would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance, keep up the good work!!!
Thanks for the kind comment. Yes, I'll make a video with my settings. Thanks for the suggestion.
Nice shots! And good to know R6 ii did the job! You’re welcome in Costa Rica anytime !
Thanks for the comment. I'll return to Costa Rica often. One of my favorite places on the planet.
@@KathyAdamsClark enjoy your trips!
I've shot as a pro for 15 years and have owned a lot of Canon cameras and even a few 1D series cameras and the R6 Mark II is the best camera I've ever used. I'd say it's the most underrated camera in the past 12 months... it's weird how even Canon influencers don't talk much about it or haven't even used it... a few just got around to using it this summer and most were surprised how good it really is.
As for resolution, it's not an issue. You can upscale the files in Adobe Camera Raw/Lightroom when outputting to say, 45 MP and the IQ is very, very, very close to the R5. In fact, if you use the "Enhance Super Resolution" feature in Camera Raw/LR, the images actually look better at 45 MP than the R5 files natively. I did comparisons of a couple dozen images from both using the best RF lenses too. And honestly, even 24 MP is way more than enough for even large prints. I've had 8 MP images used on billboards that look amazing. But now with new AI upscaling techniques, you can get 100 MP images from 24 MP and get insane detail on any size print.
I'd say the only thing missing is 4K 120 for video... Though, you can shoot 1080p 120 and upscale. The 4K60 from the R6 Mark II and R3 are the best you can get right now in mirrorless.
I agree with you @77dris. The R6 Mark II is an amazing camera. I love it! Thanks for confirming my findings!
Hi Kathy, great video thank you. Just wondered what your button configuration on the R6Mkii e.g do you use back button focus ?
Glad you liked the video. My buttons not set for back button focus. I tried back button focus years ago and it's never worked for my hands or mind. If it works for you, use it by all means. Many people have one button on the back for broad zone AF and the other button for one point AF. Have you tried that?
Thanks for a great video ,I am hoping to get out to Costa Rica next year ,still cant make up my mind wether it is worth going from an R6 to the mk2?
Thanks for the comment, Gary. Costa Rica is so amazing for birds. Hope the trip is a success.
Hi Kathy, glad to find you on RUclips. I told Mike A. to make sure to update his R5 before his next trip and he told me you sold it for him and he got an R6 MII. Do you have a video yet of settings for your R6 II? Have you checked out flying birds? I was waiting for the R5 II and using the old one as a backup. After watching this maybe it should be a R6 II for my next camera since there is no firm word about what or when the R5 ii will come out.
@petergottschling, It's good to hear form you. The R6ii is amazing. It's been my primary camera in Costa Rica, Alaska, and now Romania when photographing birds. The accuracy of the Auto focus is amazing. Set-up was super easy. I'm shooting mostly "out of the box" on the settings. I can do a video on the set-up I use if needed. It is worth the switch!!
True story, this. I recently bought an R6 Mark II and immediately sold my R3. No one is talking about this, but in my very unscientific comparison, the R6 is also sharper. Probably something to do with the stacked sensor of the R3, which makes that one better in other ways. Absolutely love the "auto detect" focus modes in the R6II that you don't get on the R3.
@MarkoPhoto-It9ue, I agree with you in many way. I used the R6II most of the time to photograph birds in Romania's Danube Delta earlier this month. It's amazing. I let others on the trip use my R6II and I used my R3. I wanted the R6II back in my hands. It's an outstanding camera for birds!
Weight does matter. How was the battery life on the R6ii? Lovely pictures. Cheers!
The battery life was great. I can't remember every needing to change the battery during the day when I started with a fresh battery. The R5 seemed to need a battery change after 1/2 day of shooting. Thanks for the question and for watching.
I bought an R6 for the eye tracking, as I was frequently cropping heavily for small birds I bought an R5, which does not like my 120-300 f2.8 Sigma and ruined a birding trip to Spain. Now Canon has the R6ii, why? I am not rolling in money, I should not have bought the R5, as I wasn't able to use my Sigma I bought a second hand 100-400Lii because I do not have £3,000 for the RF100-500. So many YT channels are pushing new gear as though they are being paid. It is like the R7, everyone is singing its praises, yet I do not trust a word, I expect it to show softness because of the high pixel density, which occurs with the 7D2. Never believe any you see or hear on the Internet!
Thanks for the comment, Blistering Books. You do sound frustrated. I alway recommend people rent equipment before buying when possible. Everyone on the internet has an opinion. It's hard to know which opinion is going to work for your shooting style. That said, I did like the R7. I have a couple of videos about my use with that camera. The R6ii is more substantial and feels more like the R5.
So you have a third party lens made for dslrs that doesn’t work properly on a new mirrorless body and you blame the camera manufacture. Why didn’t the lens maker upgrade their lens software so it would work. A manufacturer is in no way responsible for third party equipment failures or their failure to update their software.
Thanks for the breakdown. How big of a difference is there between the two with the viewfinder shooting experience. And is the r6 ii viewfinder easy to follow moving subjects when using mechanical shutter.
Thanks!
Thanks for the comment, @anand-iyer. I only use the viewfinder. Rarely in macro or something like that will I use the back of the camera. So, yes the R6ii viewfinder is super easy to follow moving subjects. I have the viewfinder set to anti-flicker and Display Simulation set to Exposure. Works great.
Hi Kathy. Did you use the R6ll for Astro photography? Thanks a lot.
@leef3167 Yes, I've used the R6ii for night photography. No complaints what so ever. I'm very happy with it. Thanks for the comment!!
Ok, so here's a question: Your pix looked really good here on RUclips. I've seen others shot from high quality cameras not look so good. Is there an ideal format for a still used in tge middle of a YT video? Similar maybe to Facebook's recommendations for pixels on the long side. How do you format these for vids?
Thanks for the compliment, Sydna! The stills in the my videos are powerpoint size. That's 1024 pixels on the longest side at 96ppi. I'm glad to know they look good on your end.
As an enthusiast and a limited budget still saving up for my first mirrorless upgrade from the 5D Mark 4. With the R5 price dropping it's been a possibility, but it sounds like you still feel that the R6 Mark II is a strong candidate. Do you feel that the large file size of the R5 would become unwieldy for enthusiast level shooting? Just subscribed, love your calm and pleasant tone in how you present!
Thanks for your question. The prices on the R5 are going down. That's a nice thing for people looking to get into mirrorless on a budget. I don't think that the large file sizes should be a concern. Storage is cheap so that's not a concern. The R6ii would save you some money. There are the other cameras, too, like the R7 that could save some money. I think that the RF lenses are critical to the full change into mirrorless. The new lenses are amazing. So take that into consideration. If money is an object, then maybe a cheaper body is in the future so you have money for the RF lenses. Something to think about.
What's the reason for the Camo wrapping on the Lense ??
Prevents scratches on the lens. It's a Lens Coat. I don't cover the lens completely but some people do. I highly recommend Lens Coat for protectors.
Like you I have both the R3 and the R6ii and like you I am finding I am increasingly using the R6ii as my go to camera. I use them to shoot cycling, surfing and border collies. Unlike you I am 6'2" tall but still enjoy compactness of the R6ii especially to shoot from bike whilst cycling. I actually bought the R6ii because of it's compactness for a waterhousing for surf photography-.
It's nice to know that the R6ii also works with folks bigger than me. You're using it for action so that tells me it's a good camera. Thanks for the post!
Costa Rica is a hot and very humid country I' not even thinking rainfalls. How did your R62 and lenses stand against that environment? Would long term exposure (months and years) effect Performance and integrity?
thanks for the comment. I haven't had a problem with the humidity and rain in Costa Rica in years. 20 years ago, equipment went down all the time. Today, there's no issue. I suspect it's the lovely weather sealing on the Canon equipment. I do watch how wet the equipment gets, though. I cover the camera with a towel if it's drizzling or dripping. I don't go out in heavy rain. The cameras and lenses stay in their bag at night with a big bag of desiccant. So far, so good.
You just made my weekend I just received my R6 mk II on Friday September 22 after missing the Fed Ex Driver 2 days in a row. I have the R6 and I decided to upgrade so I gave it to my son to replace his aging 5d mk IV
Well, I swallowed a stupid pill and placed an order for The R5 with no lens. It was $200 off and another $300 off due to an "Open Box!' It was amazing, confusing and the files were just to large and overwhelming for me and my slow computer Since I don't shoot much video, I decided to ship it back Fortunately, I was able to receive a full refund less the $10.50 Fed Ex Charge.
Once my account was credited, I pulled the trigger and purchased the R6 mkII I was able to experiment with it for a few hours on Saturday and Sunday. I even shot some brief videos after watching some great videos on RUclips. It's a match made in heaven that I will use for a long time. I'm happy to hear that it was quite successful for you as well. Your work inspired me and I will definitely attempt to photograph some birds or animals once I wrap my arms around the Amazing Auto focusing and eye tracking system
Thanks for the nice comment @Davidkouris2832 and the story. I'm so happy with my Canon R6 Mark II. Everything works like it is supposed to! That's the joy of this camera. I finished a 15 day trip to Italy yesterday and the R3 stayed in the bag the entire time. The R6ii was all I needed. Enjoy!!
Nowadays almost any camera can take great pictures of perched birds. For real Bird in flight pictures the R3 with the stacked sensor and the 14bit electronic shutter will be the better camera for sure.
You make a good point and thanks for your comment. We didn't work on a lot of birds in flight except the hummingbirds. The R6ii behaved exactly as I expected and did a great job. I've used the R6ii on birds in flight in other locations and have not been disappointed. Photographing birds in flight is a skill, too. Thanks!
@@KathyAdamsClark Any bent wings or backgrounds like trees, etc? Or all mechanical shutter for BIF? Thanks for any replies.
@@thomastuorto9929 Nothing that I noticed. I used electronic first curtain throughout the 10 days of shooting.
@@KathyAdamsClark Thank you.
Is the R3 filming you with the R6?
No, Richard. We used an iPhone for filming since it's so easy. Thanks for the comment!
So how do these two compare on high ISO clarity and performance?
They are the same in my opinion. I've don't have any problems with either and don't see much difference -- other than weight and size -- between the two cameras.
@@KathyAdamsClark Thanks for the reply. I later saw a YT review on the R3 -- I think it was from a B&H tech guy who shoots sports -- and in the comments he mentioned the R6 ii as also having very good performance under high ISO. Similar finding as yours.
Hi everyone
Is canon r6 mark ii good
Yes. I'm very happy with it. It's a good camera.
I have 1dxii would the r6 Ii be an upgrade gotta.be this.old 1dxii cants even put an AF.bitton over a head a face. or an eye and it's too big
It would be an upgrade. You'd be surprised and pleased with the more advanced AF systems. Thanks for the comment.
It would be nice to see any image before you crop it and afterwards to see how far you can crop into an image with a small bird, and it would be nice to know roughly the distance that you are away from the birds and the lens use using at the time. But a very interesting video overall thank you
Thanks for the comment. I cropped the manakin, frog, and violet-headed hummingbird. The video shows a full-frame image and then a crop to 100%. One snowcap hummingbird is full frame and the other is a 100% crop. All the rest of the birds are shown without any cropping. Each image was shot with the 100-500mm RF lens with a 1.4x extender. We tend to get pretty close to the birds in Costa Rica. Estimating 9 to 10 to 12 feet away from the bird most of the time. Thanks for asking for clarification. I hope that helps.
Me too I bought the R6 Mark II on the launch day but after using it for almost a year I deeply regret it for buying it. I used it only for video. And without ALL-I codec for video it's a pain in the azz for CPU on a PC. IPB codec is very heavy on the CPU. I think canon ought to roll out a BASIC firmware update to enable ALL-I for video. Almost all those cheaper canon cameras have ALL-I... and why not on R6 Mark II. And my PC can easily handle BMPCC 6K without any issues but 4K footage from R6 MK II is giving me a hard time with. I will not suggest this camera to anyone. Do we have to churn out more doughs for ATOMOS in order to capture it on ALL-I.... Shame Canon.... A BIG SHAM...
Thanks for your comment, @menangjamie. My comparison wasn't about video. Appreciate your input to the discussion.
@@KathyAdamsClark Subbed to your channel. Keep up the good work.
R6 mk2 special feature
of blurring the wings in flight is an added bonus......haahaaa
Guess so?! Thanks for the comment.
Sponsored by Canon!
Thanks for the comment, Neil. Not sponsored by Canon. Just a very happy Canon user!
Do Come to india 🇮🇳and shoot Himalayan Birds .

Both have same sensor and power. You are liking R6 more because of its smaller size. Otherwise it is in no way better than R3.....😊😊😊
Thanks, @dsa4931 It's not just the smaller size of the R6ii. I'm happy with it all the way around. Love the R3 but also love the R6ii.
