Costa Rica Wildlife Photography VLOG: With my partner, in November 2019, I travelled to Puerto Viejo, La Fortuna, Arenal, Monteverde and Puntarenas - photographing what I could along the way; nothing was planned. There's loads of content here including Birds, Mammals, Reptiles; me photographing in the sea.. and a damaged 400mm lens. What a place Costa Rica is! I do hope to go back. Please consider sharing this video on Facebook, Twitter and other Social Media - it really helps to get my channel out there!
Filmed with Canon M50 and 15-45mm lens.
Equipment: Canon 1DX Mark i

Really good images, well done.
Very nice photos!
The little creature you saw Cotimundi not sure if I spelled it right but think that's what it was nice video .
That Tricolour heron, is absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing Paul 👍
It really was. Stunning!
Love Costa Rica. Wildlife photography paradise. I hired a guide in Sarapiqui and we totalled 68 different bird species in 1km over a 2 hour period, pretty much the same result in Monteverde and in Osa. Wish I was going back soon!
Absolutely fantastic. I hope I return one day.
omg a sloth! I love Costa Rica! I hope to return soon as a newly minted birder.
We saw 3 I think. One of them did not move. Honestly, if you didn't know better you could genuinely think it's fake!
Do you think the vultures wondered who the ugly human was taking photographs of them... 😂 Joking aside great channel, thank you for sharing your techniques...
Yeah, it’s a fair point..! Thanks for the support Edward.. much appreciated.
Absolutely awesome images, Paul. Loved the ones of the turnstone and the diving brown pelican. Also the hummingbird. A joy to watch. Thank you.
Thank you Tony. It was quite an adventure!
Greetings Paul, I hope you enjoyed your visit to Costa Rica. We have a lot of nature to enjoy.
you had a wonderful vacation and great diving shots WOW ! now you need to come to Ecuador lol -- 120 kinds of hummingbirds 50 kinds of Tanagers and soooo much more :) :) :)
I hope I do one day. And if I do I'll let you know Doug.
Great video Paul. Definitely on my growing list of bucket destinations. The snake looks like a Tropical Milk Snake. It's one of the King Snake family, which are often mistaken for Coral's, but are harmless to humans. Unlike the Coral... Really enjoying your videos.
Thanks Andrew. Others have said Tropical Milk Snake.. or False Coral.
Superb photos Paul. I've been to most of those places so realise how much you enjoyed yourself.
Thank you. We had some crazy days - and very tiring travel... but what an experience.
The "Little Egrets" are Snowys, as you say later. The "Curlew" is a Hudsonian Whimbrel and the Hummer is a Green crowned Brilliant as Steve said earlier.
Some Great shorebird and Pelican shots Paul.
Thanks Tat. Really do appreciate that information.
Superb all round. I made the mistake of selling my 400mm f5.6 a few months back and after watching this have bought another...cant beat it for flight shots hand held and light enough to carry all day
Thanks. It's such amazing value and as you say it's great for carrying around.
Pleased to see that you enjoyed your C.R. vacation. I've been working on the pelican dive shot for several years & your shots are way better than any of mine. We have been going to C.R. for several years & the rich wildlife is what got me seriously into photograpy Thanks for the video, well done.
Cheers Steve. I do hope to return one day. Great country.. and I love the people too.
Beautiful images of beautiful subjects. I enjoyed the video very much.
Many thanks Brenda.
Great vlog Paul 👌🏻 like the chilled out approach to photograph on the beach! Another country on my list now 😁
cheers from Costa Rica
Another cracking video Paul. keep them coming
Many thanks Ian.
What a great set of photos, you must be well chuffed.
I barely scratched the surface Chris. But yes, considering everything - I'm happy.
Beautiful simple video thanks for sharing
Your're welcome. Thank you for the positive feedback.
Love the sea bird shots! Great Sanderling shot
Thank you John. I do love my little waders.
I absolutely loved this video
GREAT!!!
Hi Paul Superb video. I'm still using my old Canon 5d mk ii and I have no reason to update but I am looking for a lens to go with it for wildlife. Watching this vid is inspiring and the lens is really good. I will be selling my 70-300mm l to pick up this 400mm. keep up the great work mate.
Thank you Russ. It's honestly a great lens. Some drawbacks (You can find my review on it years back) but great quality
Great photos. That lens can produce some amazing images. One thing I notice is the ISO value could be smaller in some images, not that matters if the sensor can handle higher ISO nicely.
You're absolutely right about the high ISOs. I wouldn't normally shoot that high (and often it wasn't required). It's just a consequence of bvoth vlogging and photographing - you don't have time to fine tune sometimes!
If you think they're ugly, you should see our Magpie Geese.
Haha!
great video and I am using the Canon 400mm f5.6L too!
Really loved this video, you made me feel the excitement as if I was with you , thank you so much .
Then I've done my job. Cheers Rod.
Loved it
Cheers Lee.
Well done and fun to watch. Keep up the good work. To bad about the lens.
Thank you. The lens is working fine - just can't put the hood down.
Is a hot country to be travelling And using the long telephoto lens
You captured some tasty images there, Paul.
Great vlog worlds away from conditions in England. Heaven on earth, must take Camilla & I on holiday
Thank you. Variety is the spice of life.
Hi Paul thank you for this wonderful distraction from the bloody election you got some amazing images my favourite being the pelican in flight. It definitely came across that you were like a kid in a sweet shop and why not. Until next time take care my friend.
Clive, I was more than happy to distract you from the bloody election. In fact I spent the entire results day building a wooden hide - much more productive. Thanks again for your support.
All those birds and a white bellied and legged English photographer
Haha!! Yep.
Great shots, great place. I bet you used a few memory cards there Paul
Cheers John. Only one! i really don't take tons of images these days.
Felt like the video ended pretty soon... great images... loved your experience as well.
Well that's good to hear. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Beautiful video
Used to only see the black vultures across the south, now I am seeing them as far north as Missouri.
ulalala Costa Rica , this is great:) long jurney , but well worth it , fantastic Video Paul:)
It was great Dawid. Maybe a once in a lifetime trip.
@@PaulMiguelPhotography i got feeling that it wont be your last time up there Paul :)
Just watched this video...very entertaining and some great shots.
Thank you Chris. Much appreciated that is.
Hi Paul
Great to see a much loved place through different eyes, agree that the wildlife in the country is magical.
When you return please consider going onto the Pacific side of the country, had a great time up on the coast bordering Nicaragua.photographing pelicans and many more birds and creatures. Strangely just posted a pic of a Anhinga taken at Tortuguero on my Flickr page today. Did you see the Quetzels in Monteverde? Loved the content, well done on those marvelous shots.
Thanks for the comment Steve. I didn't see any Quetzels, but nice views of Toucans. I do like the Anhinga.!
Nice bit video, brings back memories of my visits there. Your Hummer is not a Rufous-tailed Hummingbird it looks more like a male Green-crowned Brilliant
Thanks Steve. I've never seen Hummingbirds before. Appreciate the info.
You got lots of great photos. Looks like you had fun. Shame about your lens it's insured? . I'm off to Peru next year can not wait. Hope to get some great photos myself.
Great video-surprising just how high and ISO you need there to get decent shutter speeds.
Places like this you will often be under tree cover and then it doesn't matter how bright the sun is!
Hi Paul I'm hoping to go to costa Rica for the wildlife so wondering did you book a tour or just stay at hotels and do day trips?
We arranged everything ourselves. Stayed mainly in 3 different areas. Hired a car.
Wonderful video as always! Question about the pelican shots: I notice you were consistently at f/7.1. Was this to get a bit more depth of field, given the size of these birds? Thanks for all the great content!
Hi Chris. It's partly that but it's mostly because I get sharper images from this lens. It's decent - but does look sharper if you close down the aperture a bit.
The black vultures along with turkey vultures are common here in southwest Ohio, and are some of my favorite birds. I find them attractive in their own way, and they serve an important purpose. It's possible those on the beach thought that you were a corpse washed up by the tide. You Brits are a bit pasty you know. 😉
"Some mammal with a long snout." I'm glad it was a coati, and not an elephant. ☺️
I really shouldn't be that pasty - I'm half Venezuelan. That's what living ere does to you..
@@PaulMiguelPhotography
Well currently you're much better off in the U.K. It's a crying shame what's happened to the once vibrant and thriving economy of that country, and I feel so sorry for the people.
It's a shame you didn't pack the frying pan for the beach shots..... great vlog Paul. #Tefionphotographer
I couldn't get it through customs.
Jesus! This pink short is killing me xD I'm really surprised by the quality of this lens! Very sharp and light too. The only negativ point for me is the minimal distance =3.5m I always use my tripod for birds and animals photography :)
Haha! I love those shorts... Yes, the minimum focus distance is a downside. But you say, the quality is very good.
Hi Paul
I’ve a 7d2 and 400mm f5.6. I can’t decide whether to take it to Costa Rica or just bring my Swaro and digiscope with iPhone. Weight and kids being factors. Like you I’m unfamiliar with the birds there so am torn between looking at them and taking photos (to later ID). What do you think?
Cheers
Bill
Hi Bill. I think it comes down to how you would feel afterwards. Would it bother you a lot if you didn't get the best quality by using the camera?
My photography isn’t on par with yours but would be useful for scrolling through the guide to identify.
What was your return rate like: keepers to binned (and acceptable)?
Pink.
It looks like you were spoilt for choice with birds. My favourite shot was the second humming bird. The one with more of the surroundings
I really appreciate that Andy. I really liked the Humingbird images. They were completely natural with no intervention at all - and I loved the mixture of colours in the image.
Hi, thanks for a videos. İ have a question: this lens is non I. Stabilisation right? and what are tou thinking about Canon eos 70d or 7d and this lens for hand held shoots. Thank you very much 😁
It's correct, no IS on this lens. I have only ever used a 7D which I did not like.
from the footage I cant really identify if it was a coral but it was definitely eating a tropical racer ( mastigodryas)
It looks like a Tropical Milk Snake. Fairly common in CR and also has other snakes on its diet
Meant to add that they are non venomous.
Thank you indeed. Is tropical racer dangerous?
Good.
What sling/strap are you using for the camera please? Looks very practical!
The cappuchins at the hotel in Tortuguero almost murdered me (my fault). True story
OK then...
False coral snake
They are snowy egret
Thanks Hema. I realise now that they were Snowy. Gorgeous birds.
Hi Paul, great video ruined by adverts. Not seen them on your vlogs before and hope this was a one-off to help pay for the trip. Otherwise a great fan of yours.
Hi Vanessa. All my videos are monetised but you might not see them depending on your 'tolerance' (RUclips's phrase) to adds. This video did have extra adds in. Thanks for the feedback.
@@PaulMiguelPhotography I must be more tolerant than my husband realises. Will be watching your videos with a hallo now lol
You wanna shoot birds and wear out the mechanical shutter? Go to San Gerardo de Dota for male quetzals (January to April), tanagers and hummers year round. Osa península for all four species of monkeys, ara macaws, cotingas. You will never shoot another grackle. Mirador el Pizote for king vultures, toucans. Great false coral snake.
Sounds fantastic! Others have said it's a false coral snake. I've also seen pictures of a 'snail eater' that looks similar.
Good evening Paul, thank you for sharing, wonderful photos, trecolored heron ... In return, I'd like to share one of my videos on the common kingfisher on : Gerfaut7 dh friendly from France
Looked like a milk snake of some sort. They are constrictors and tend to feed on other snakes.
Thank you!
But where's the frying pan!?!?!?!
When you showed the lens after the drop my heart was in my mouth expecting a crack on the front element. Kudos to Canon for making a lens that'll survive a 4ft drop onto a hard surface with only damage to the lens hood. I'm also worried if it's messed with some of the internal optics
I couldn't get it through customs.
I dropped the camera with it - both are working fine. They really do make solid stuff.
PayPaul LMAO
This would be a better video with less you and more wildlife.
This comment section would be better with less you Gary Dietz and more wildlife. Didn't your mother tell you, If you don't have anything nice to say shut your mouth!
Lol! There's probably thousands of videos of just Costa Rican wildlife - not difficult to find.
@@PaulMiguelPhotography I did not express my thoughts clearly, what I meant was less video of you while you are walking , point your camera towards what you are seeing then we could see what you are talking about instead of just watching you describe it. Your videos are very informative
No worries Gary. Thanks for the feedback.
Another vlogger going the topless route to get more views. Very sad to see.
