My mami use to dice real ham and throw it in there, her habichuelas guiadas where the best ever....many times I left the rice behind and had only the beans. RIP mami.

I gotta tell you Ida, this recipe is the bomb!!! I made it for Christmas with arroz blanco and I also made your Carne Guisada! Let me tell you, they were a huge hit!!! I already have requests to make some more! I didn't add the potato or olives to the beans because I had lots of potatoes and olives in the stewed meat. But I just wanted to say thank you for your amazing recipes!!! Me gusta muchissimo!!!

💜💜I made this using a couple slices of bacon diced, used coriander, garlic, pepper, sazon, and cumin, and served over brown rice. Can't wait to get some sofrito done up!

Since ive no room in tiny freezer and dont cook Spanish food every day i don't make batches of softito but if i would id never use a blender No texture!..what i do is chop up garlic onions peppers and add cilantro etc and cook in olive oil when i cook my beans as a base instead
I just bought your choice of Sazon instead of Goya to see if i like it better..because your foods so fabulous i trust your desions..i do make beans often and freeze them in pints too.and usually always have cooked rice. They were always a family favorite I originally learned from friends there moms and grandmoms Spanish cooking

Hi Ida thx for sharing your delicious recipes. I love PR food my PR friend from NY introduced me to the delicious food, but sadly she moved recently after she got me hooked to the yummy food lol. Gracias, cooking Arroz y Habechuelas con Pernil for my Boss Lady and Boss Man for Mother's Day. They are not mis viejos, since everyone is gone, I'm the last of Doña Petra's kids, so I kinda of adopted them as my surrogates. Love them very much. Again thanks for the tips.

It's totally worth making your own sofrito. (There are recipes for it on YT.) I store my sofrito in a couple of saran-wrapped ice cube trays. Depending on what I'm making, I just pop one or two cubes out when needed. Super convenient.

Hi Ida I hope you are doing well I would like to ask you how long sofrito lasts in the freezer in Tupperware? Thank you 😊 if it gets ice chips inside does that mean it's not good anymore or can I scrape them off?
Yes, it should last at least 3 months in the freezer
Never thought I'd have to ask this but my daughter is an emt and has to make rice and beans for her pot luck for work They're celebrating new years since they have to work... HOWEVER the issue is the ham seasoning in the beans! Is it kosher? It says ham flavor but I don't see a protein listed on the packet ... What would you suggest for a complimentary acceptable substitute if the ham packet is not kosher? Please please help! Tysm

My PR girlfriend (PRs and WASPs go together very well) taught this WASP this recipe. Lightly brown a small onion and several garlic cubes in olive oil. Rinse a can of beans. Un-rinsed, all that starch creates gas (oops!). Then use chicken stock or bullion to thin to the right consistency. Add a 1/2 packet of Sazon, red pepper, black pepper, 1/2 tsp of paprika, and a few green pimento olives. Simmer, check salt, and serve with brown rice (more vitamins than white, but I like both). Now, where's the pernil?
+PalJoey1957 I never put beans or use chicken stock. It might have too much salt, and I don't know how the chicken will taste with the ground beef. Why don't you use beef stock?
+Sweets and Beyond I use a lite, low salt chicken stock and use just enough to slightly more than cover the beans in the pot. You don't really taste the chicken, but it adds "body" to the sauce, and I think it goes better with pork or chicken than beef stock, which has a heavier flavor. One can always add a bit of water at the end, but I never need to.
What do you mean, "I never put beans?" I use the same ones you use here, pink or kidney.

Hey there ! I made these habichuelas this week and they tasted wonderful but afterward , my stomach hurt. I followed everything step by step and used the 15 oz can of beans but did not have the Goya ham packet nor sazon and used the goya salad and veggie packet instead. I'm wondering if I added too much tomato sauce? I added half of the 8 oz can.
+lm112308 I don't know why your stomach hurt. I have never used the salad and veggie packet for beans. It must have tasted different from what I show in the video.

You can use turkey ham or leave it out.

How much of the homemade Sazon?
I was wondering how much (the quantity) Homemade Sazon should be added to this bean dish? 1 teaspoon, or more like 1 Tablespoon?

Now hear is the trick, you can cook with original juce beans but you will pass the gas if you boil in original just for 20min drain the original juce Wash it and add water .You eat and you would never pass the gass after this meal.
