What is the max speed attainable from the two USB-C ports on MacBook Pro or MacBook Air M1’s? Wouldn’t both Sandisk Extreme Pro SDD’s, have the same read/write speeds based on the limit of Mac’s internal ports?

Great video! I have the X5 as essentially a permanent part of my iMac setup, so I’m not concerned about its ability to withstand water exposure or being banged around while being transported. In that context, it’s a superb, super-fast and reliable external Thunderbolt SSD drive. And hey, call me crazy but I very much like the spacey design!
Hi Bob! The X5 is an absolute beast and every bit as good as the Lacie. I was just having some fun with it. I like the Lacie better but that's 100% down to personal preference, not performance. And if you like the spacey design, beam me up Bob!

When choosing one of these for the IPad Pro 2020, going with the Sandisk versions. Would you get the v2 extreme or the normal extreme? Is the extra speed able to be utilized on that iPad?
For the iPad I'd get the normal extreme. Even the latest iPad pro has a seriously restricted port. If it's just for your iPad, I'd save the money and get the normal extreme.

I'll definitely test some drives. I don't own all of these ones anymore. The Lacie is my favorite right now! I also received a very cool hybrid between a hub and an SSD which I think could be ideal for the iPad.

I’ve been trying to figure out if I should get the T7 or the sandisk extreme pro. “Not the V2”. Also I am using my iPhone. So I’ve been trying to figure out the best setup to get the best speeds. I feel like my read and write speed is limited on my iPhone 11. And wonder if I even need the up to 1050m/bs

I bought a Samsung T7 1Tb for $109.00 during the 2021 Black Friday deals for an M1 Macbook Air as external storage. It may not have the highest read & write speeds compared to some alternatives. Nevertheless, the price to performance ratio of the T7 for storing files and documents more than suits my needs and simple workflow. Thanks for the informative video.

I have the Samsung T5 T7 Both 2T each use them for large format photo editing transferring ,archiving. T7 most of the time is too hot to be touch T5 feeling almost warm.Yes that concern for long time last.T5 is my fave cuz i trust it more. I know most everyone talking about speed transfers and leaving a very important part Blanc. . All i can say the T5 even with large files 500G performed fine with out issues. Can you make comparison for Sandisk and TeamGroup PD1000?
Hi Patrick. I've read multiple reviews about the Sandisk getting extremely hot, and hoped I wouldn't have the same issue. Unfortunately, even with purchasing a 4TB sandisk and doing video editing off of it, it became super hot even when not in use and was causing glitching and freezing within Premiere. Sandisk hasn't seemed to address these issues or want to fix them. Are you using the Sandisk for editing or just storage/backup? Most of the reviews I've read where people are happy with Sandisk seem to be for back up. Thinking I should just return it instead of replace it and buy Lacie, but it's SO expensive. Any thoughts?
Hi there. They all get hot to be honest, it's what SSDs do because there is no active cooling. The Lacie is by far my favorite but that gets hot too, you just don't notice it as much because of the thick silicone housing.
@@PatrickRambles thanks for your response. I've used Samsung before and had no issues with overheating. It's all aluminum exterior though, I believe. However, Samsung didn't make a large enough storage that I required, which is why I bought Sandisk. Heat wouldn't concern me if it wasn't causing defects or actual glitches in the editing process, due to everything slowing down because of heat (possibly). Do you use the Sandisk for editing in 4k?
No, I exclusively use the Lacie these days if I edit off a drive. The internal SSD on the M1 Max MacBook Pro is so fast though that I actually prefer editing straight from the computer. But yeah the Lacie is the one for me.
I have the Sandisk Extreme v2 (not the Pro) and it's fast for sure...but I feel that it gets way too hot while editing 4k...is the Samsung T7 the same? less hot? it really worries me that it gets too hot...which one would be better for video editing? 4k? thanks
Hello, I would like to store my music files outside my MacBook. Will I get speed issues playing music files straight from one of these external SSD drives? Is it also possible to connect these devices to an iPhone?
These drives are fast enough to edit 4K video footage straight from the drive. Playing music off the drive will be a breeze.

Do you know if SSD Extreme Pro V2 work on iPhone?
I'm curious if anyone knows if using a USBc to thunderbolt cable is better or the same as using a USBc to USBa cable. Using an older macbook with thunderbolt 2 ports I'm wondering if it's worth getting a different cable since I don't have USBc ports.
If I were you I’d convert thunderbolt (TB) 2 to TB3 using an adapter. TB3 has the highest throughput of all specs so you’ll likely preserve the TB2 rates while terminating in a USBC style connector.
Remember that USBC =/= TB3, but TB3 cables and sockets use USBC connectors. TB3 interface is worth it if you’re looking for full backwards compatibility.

Hi Patric, great video thanks! I think that SanDisk v2 lover performance was due to MacBook port limitation which is USB 3.1 Gen 2 up to 10Gbit/s.

If you find Thunderbolt external SSDs at price comparable to the affordable and other SSDs (like Samsung T7), is it worth purchasing if you do not need the fast speeds (do not conduct video or photo editing or large data tasks) and have computers without thunderbolt? I understand the samsung X4 is not compatible with other port types. only compatible with thunderbolt USB-C. If you need to put the SSD into a computer without thunderbolt, I would be in trouble. wouldn't I?
It's a good idea to check maximum upload speeds for every connection. E.g. On the thunderbolt ports on my 16 inch MacBook pro, the SanDisk Extreme Pro won't give me max speeds because it's created for usb c 3.2x2. It's still a great drive but it's not as fast as it could be on my Mac. I'm currently using the Lacie Rugged SSD, which is just perfect for me 👌

Seems I should check the drive USB types compatibility to get max speeds to know what to expect. the USB types of the ports of my laptop, HP spectre 13 x360, has USB 3.1 Gen 2 for type C ports (2x) and type A port. Not 3.1 gen 2x2. I'm pretty much looking for a portable SSD that allows me to extend the storage of my laptop along with allowing continuous access to perform data analysis and other tasks (but no video or photo editing) plus use with older computers hence older USB ports. I notice product info for the samsung X5 says "Only compatible with Macs and Windows PCs with Thunderbolt™ 3 ports... Not compatible with PCs only with USB interface." If I want to use the drive with USB-A port too such as transferring data from/ to an older computer, seems I would have a problem with that particular SSD drive unlike others such as Sandisk Extreme Pro V2, which has pretty good speeds along with better compatibility compared to the samsung X5.

Hey guys! It's been reported that the SanDisk gets higher speeds on a 3.1 gen 2x2 port. The MacBook pro has 3.1 gen 2. So if you have a PC that has these ports, the SanDisk might be good pick for you as well.

SSDs are known to not like erasing and reloading large files over and over, as do HHDs.

Hey Timothy, I'd say you don't need an X5 for that. I think a T5 will be plenty fast for storage and a lot cheaper.

Hey there! It's apples and oranges. The Lacie Rugged Mini is not an SSD drive. So the T7 is faster, much lighter and arguable more durable, or at least drop resistant. Personally I can't think of a good reason to choose an HDD over an SSD except budget.

Not sure, but if it is, it won't be at maximum speed. The older macs have slower ports.

I enjoyed the film, but my 2017 MacBookPro has no thunderbolt 3 port, only USB-Cs. So does the 2021 model with which I plan to replace it. Doesn't that rule out the X5 and the Lacie?

Not necessarily, but the thunderbolt ports on the MacBook double as USB C ports. I'm pretty sure your Mac had TB ports (that also function as usb c)
@@PatrickRambles Thanks, this is confusing because in your cable run-down from around 1:21, the USB-C cables have no logo while the Thunderbolt 3 have two bolts and the number 3. It looks as if they are different connections. Why would they do that if the ports are the same?
I understand your confusion. Not all TB cables have the bolts on them. But regarding the ports : they are not the same. thunderbolt ports are backwards compatible with usb C. But a pure USB C port will not take TB. The ports on your MacBook are TB ports, so they also take USB C

Samsung T7 is not working on mobile. It is working fine on laptops and desktops but when trying on android mobile phones (3 to 4) different mobile or tablets. it's not working saying, no SSD connected. In one mobile after installing software from the play store it is showing the SSD but after entering the password app is crashing and SSD didn't show up and sometimes mobile is also getting hanged trying to read the solid-state disk.
If the Sandisk was using the TB3 cable could you expect higher performance?
No, because the SanDisk needs a usb c 3.2 port for max speeds.

Hey man. Nope. I find that the faster Samsung drives get quite hot (T7 does as well) but no overheating. There is a noticeable difference to the other drives though. The SanDisk stays coolest. I landed on the Lacie because it is the full package of speed, ruggedness, and very little heat. Plus the waterproof feature is neat!

Are you sure you're using a USB 3.1 gen2x2 port with the sandisk? I have the same device, and I have much better performance, around 1800 MB/s write speed.
However, if I use a normal usb 3.1 gen2 port, it only reach around 900 MB/s
Hey Daniele. The MacBook pro 16 inch uses 3.1 gen 2. That should be sufficient as it can handle up to 10 GBPS. The other two drives performed as advertised.
@@PatrickRambles Not really, 10 gbps equals around 1200 MB/s, to fully use the sandisk you need the gen 2x2 which has 20 gbps.
I tested it on my PC that has both, and as I said, with the gen 2 i only got 900 mb/s, and 1800 mb/s with the gen 2x2

@@PatrickRambles I'm not saying that the SanDisk is better, but the benchmark in the video is not "fair"... In my computer I have a gen 2x2 port, but not a TB port, so in my case the SanDisk is a better option. So it just depends.

Hi there! As far as I'm aware, you can't edit straight or an SSD using iPhone or IPad. You'd have to transfer the files to your iPhone first.

I haven't tried it on an iPhone and I would not recommend it. You will not reach the top speeds as the iPhone doesn't have the proper usb ports for that. I would use a simpler drive. If you want to stick with Samsung, the T5 will be more than capable.

Basically I can use data of my SSD using by my android phone.
Problem with those drives is their slow bus-speeds.

Weird results on sandisk! I’ve got 2TB model for the slower model and it’s plenty fast and was a super cheap deal, more than happy with it
Dear friend, please include in your reviews the small but important detail that the ruggedness is obtained by a rubber housing and like so, it degrades in time, getting all sticky and unpleasant. Its not only Lacie's problem, but of every company choosing rubberized housing (I still remember a small Asus Eepc laptop and also a Logitech Revolution mouse getting all marmalade after about two years). Sounds amusing but it actually turns out to be quite an unpleasant "feature" for most of the involved products.
