There was a time when running Quarterbacks were avoided like the plague. If you weren't a pocket passer, you were not welcome as the leading Quarterback for an NFL team. It wasn't until pioneer Fran Tarkenton's scrambling ability opened the door for a new style of Quarterback. The running Quarterback. More recently guys like Mike Vick or Lamar Jackson have mastered this style with more and more young players inspired by their play. This list looks back at the 10 best running Quarterbacks in NFL history.

We need an updated version cause these young QB now are like running backs and TE who can throw passes. The qb slide is becoming obsolete
John Elway was more of a mobile QB who could run when he needed to, who was great as using his legs to extend plays and make something out of broken plays....not sure if he would really be a “running QB”. Joe Montana likewise, he was very mobile before his back injury in 86’, he ran for about 60 yards in SB 19, but not a “running QB”
Bobby Douglas was a running QB, with a strong arm but couldn’t aim.
His coach said “Douglas could throw the ball through a barn door, if he could actually hit the barn door”
You could make a case for Daunte Culpepper being on the list, he was running for 400-600 yards per season before he got injured.
I agree with what you said, but Elway still had 33 rushing touchdowns. He used his legs to extend plays mostly, but he was more than willing to run. Tag that with his cannon of an arm and I think it's justified to put him #10. That being said Culpepper does give him a run for his money.

Damon Allen, Marcus Allen's brother, passed for 72,381 yards and ran for 11,920 in his CFL career - twice as much as Michael Vick. As the only recourse for African American quarterbacks, the CFL was the place for athletic, mobile QB's when America wouldn't/couldn't accept a Black man at the helm of an NFL team.
Nobody should be putting Lamar Jackson on a list like this yet.... He hasn't played long enough

Listen I LOVE THE 1-3 and to be honest I wouldn't be mad if the top 3 was tweak. But I have to ask what's the list based on. Whats makes a qb the best mobile. Is it speed, strength, wins or losses. Or just pure electric plays and the ability to be escape artist. I think Elway can be up a few notches but its hard to move someone down. This is a tough list. I'm glad I didn't have to come up with it

Patty won mvp last year he had a cannon for an arm. He put his hand high in the record books. Lamar takes rushing to a new level. The quarterbacks job is to thrown the da*n ball. He is one of the only people in history to have everyone say he’s mvp we’re giving the credit to the people throwing the ball farther than time and dropping the ball in madden faster then my grades. We turn our head. a rookie “wide receiver” was drafted. he breaks record after record. Makes our head turn. Making Mahomes looking salty. He is no running back no wide receiver. He is the quarterback. We thought he was Tim Tebow. we thought he was Julio Jones. He needs to throw the ball. He gets 3000 passing yards. He is here for a reason. He is here for a purpose. He is the true best running quarterback. Maybe not yet, but he will break that rushing record. Say what you want, but I guarantee it.

In one season, Lamar broke Vick’s rushing record and, in the same season, had 15 more passing touchdowns than the most Vick has ever had in a single season. Lamar still has many more years ahead, so those numbers will get bigger.
