The Quarterback position is changing in front of our eyes. No longer does the traditional pocket passer get all the attention as it seems more and more athletically gifted Quarterbacks get drafted out of college every year. A decade ago it was a needle in a haystack to find a Quarterback who could run their 40 yard dash time in less that 5 seconds, now its the norm. The myth has been busted that a running quarterback can not be successful in the NFL, and while many have failed, expect more and more Quarterbacks in the NFL that can dominate in the pocket and make plays with their feet to boot. This list will account mainly for their running ability and also their passing effectiveness. These are the top 10 best running quarterbacks in NFL History.

It's a difference between a running QB and a scrambling QB! This list has a bit of both! Vick ran and so did Randall but some of these men scrambled. No Staubach or Rogers is strange. Elway was a great QB but not a runner actually though he scrambled greatly💡. He was more of a guy looking to pass. Ran only when forced. Young was a running QB with a purpose

From what I have seen Kyler looks very good at somethings. Kind of funny because all the problems you say KM has Russell Wilson also had and still has though not as much. Is your team the Arizona Cardinals then? They could have a much better year this year and seem to be on the upswing. Take care then.

Back in the day, if you played MADDEN, you wanted the Atlanta Falcons with Mike Vick. He played the actual game like the video game (Or, maybe the video game played like he actually played on the field). The Falcons had Mike Vick, Warrick Dunn, and TJ Duckett (affectionately known as RUN DVD).
I feel like who should not be on the list is John Elway. Because in madden 17 he had 69 speed and 64 jumping.
Steve Young is way low, he was top 3 at least, but the best overall on this list besides maybe Elway
Bobby Douglass. He ran so well that he couldn't pass and averaged over 6 yards per carry.
He had 4 rushing TDs in one game..He used to run over defensive line men,,Strong as hell!

I can tell a young person made this list so you forgot one QB, Bobby Douglas he should be in the top 5 ----- In 1972, playing for the Chicago Bears, Douglass set the record for most rushing yards by a QB in one season. The record stood for 34 years. In a 14-game 1972 season, he ran for 968 yards and 8 touchdowns on 141 carries. Four QBs (three in the CFL, one in the NFL) have since run for over 1,000 yards. With Douglass starting, the Chicago Bears had only a 13-31-1 record.[3]
In five seasons from 1971-1975, Douglass played in 47 games and amassed 2,040 rushing yards. During that span, he averaged 43.4 rushing yards per game played-the third highest rushing yards per game average over a five-season span for a QB. (Michael Vickranks first with 54.1 yds/g over a five-season span from 2002-2006
I've never considered Elway a running QB. He has that one iconic run in the superbowl and all of a sudden he was a great running QB?

Brad Richardson Yeah, so many have forgotten about him! He was always breathing life into the Jaguars by scrambling and extending plays.
for-sure,..he was actually a top-tier QB,in the late 90's-early00's,..he was a, poor-man's-Steve Young..that happened to eventually become as-good,as him by the time he was in his prime few years,..and steve was fading,..but,hey from like 1998-2001,..brunell was as-good as any QB in the NFL,as far as,..getting the most out of the team/players(he did have 2 stud-wrs tho')..wasn't a team in the league (no-matter what they say now),..that wouldn't of been happy to have him starting at QB in that time-frame,....
Good list but i would add Jeff Garcia somewhere. Guy could run and dodge people all over the field. Undrafted and too bad he had to spend a number of years in CFL before given the chance. Still holds a few key 49ers records even though he played after Montana and Young.

I really think Randall Cunningham should be on this list somewhere. Quarterbacks had still scrambled before him but when he joined the league he instantly revolutionized scrambling and thats why hes a hall of famer.

Cam Newton is not only by far the best running QB in the history of football, but by the end of his career he will also without question be the greatest Quarterback to ever play the game! Probably also the worst or craziest dressed, but definitely the greatest QB ever!

I am not a Cowboy fan at all although I grew up in the Ft Worth area as a Steelers fan. Needless to say I was not very popular as a fan in my school esp in the 70"s for anyone that remembers the NFL then. With all that being said I am curious on your thoughts of Roger the dodger who was very difficult to coral much like Frantic Fran who did make your list. He did not have the biggest yards but extended many plays longer than many others would have. In his career he only had one season where he finished below a 4 yard avg. per attempt. Anyway not a fan but lots of respect for Roger Stuabach and the Cowboy organization from the no nonsense days of the great Tom Landry.

fran tark with vikings playing packers we used to yell at tv as packer fans when fran was running around "will somebody please tackle that guy, c'mon". i remem bobby douglas scrambling for 10 yds left and right and great scrambles but through the ball 5 ft high over everyone. didn't see bobby d on list, what was he 973 yds or so for a 1 year record for a long time?

Some of these guys are too early in their careers to be on a All Time in History list.
That's because running Quarterback is a new phenomenon. Back in the day 99% of Quarterbacks were pocket passers. Nowadays it's kind of expected a Quarterback runs under a 5 second 40 yard dash.

Not sure what your criteria was for this top 10. Best running quarterbacks for straight yards gained, for running to pass and/or for all those and elusivity plus evasiveness? If it includes the latter than the only picks you got right were Fran Tarkenton and Vick. Russ is a far more elusive runner in addition to being a better quarter back than Cam or most of the others.
