  • In this video, Bob Paulinski Master of Wine discusses the top sparkling wine values from Trader Joes. you’re in the right place. This video will focus on a couple of must buy options that are priced at under $15 per bottle. Both made by the Traditional Method.
    First up is the Trader Joe’s Platinum Reserve Traditional Method sparkling from Sonoma for $14.99. Made from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, same as the usual players used in Champagne. It’s made from a blend of vintages. It’s limited offering available for a few months per year.
    Pale color, fine bead of bubbles, good mousse, citrus rind, green apples, good intensity on the aromas, slight roasted nut character, clean, modern style, And that’s the key to good sparkling, bright acidity. moderate dosage level, touch of sweetness, but that’s countered by a vibrant acidity level.
    Next up, La Borgundie Cremant de Bourgogne rose’ at $11.99. Made from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Aligote and Gamay. In France, many regions that produce Cremant, often the best come from Burgundy. The red varieties lend the color to the wine with a short maceration time with the grape juice.
    Nice fizz, good persistent bead, bit of red fruit character, lively, bright, pure, good intensity, nice weight on the palate, slight dosage, this is an exceptionally put together wine for a bare bones cost.
    My conclusion: the TJs Platinum Reserve Sparkling from Sonoma brings outstanding value. You could pay twice the money and not get this quality. It’s made in a crowd pleaser style. It’s rock solid. For a big group, you can’t go wrong. If you want it, act now. And for just over $10 there are two Cremants from the same producer that are well worthwhile.

    Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wealth of experience in these videos! As someone who worked hard to get the WSET3 certification, I am in awe of those who can prove themselves at the Master of Wine level. And adding your many years of experience on the retail side of the wine industry, these are absolutely among the best wine videos out there.

    Here in NYS, TJ can't sell wine. However, we do get to purchase it at TJ's in Portland, ME. I'll look for these wines but until now I've bought splits of Champagne there. I'm not saying they're great wines, although I believe they're actually from Epernay. Still, for the two of us the size is just right when we don't want to overdo it and they taste good to us.

    Cremant de Bourgogne does usually have the best QPR of all the Cremants, IMHO. With perhaps Cremant de Loire in it's various iterations a close second. TJ's Platinum Reserve Traditional Method for 15 bucks is crazy value. Unfortunately, those types of wines don't exported much out of the States it seems. The ones I have seen in overseas markets tend to be bargain basements or the super premium category. But thanks for sharing this video, as not everyone can spend 50 or 100$ on Champagne or similarly priced bubby for New Years. Cheers!

      Cremant d’Alsace is also in the mix for a close second. There’s an interesting dichotomy playing out in the wine world. The hard branded and prestige wines keep climbing in price, but it’s left a gap for smaller, creative, innovative producers to take advantage of market opportunities. There are plenty of excellent, valued priced wines, if one knows where to look. Happy New Year!

    I was just at TJ. I always look at the wine, but am never sure what to select. I should have watched you TJ video from a couple weeks ago. These all sound great too, and are at a good price point. Now I've got a couple + one ideas when I head back. The font complaint got a good laugh, but only because I can relate. Thanks for another good one.

      I know the family that makes the 375ml. They sell in many international markets under a range of labels. I agree, it does and should blow away the other two suggestion being around twice the cost for an equivalent volume. The strange thing is the 750ml costs more than twice the price of the 375ml. I think the 750ml was $26.99

      That is my go to bubbly for everything. It's the best I've ever tasted under $25 for 750ml. Bonus, I'm single so I can never open a full bottle unless I have another bubbly drinker with me. It's the perfect sparkler for me.

    Bob, first time commenter but have been enjoying your vids for a while now.
    2 questuons:
    1.). how does the TJs Sonoma compare quality wise to the Kirkland Signature Champagne?
    2.). Given the high costs of land in Sonoma and the more complex traditional method of production, how can TJ bring to market a sparkler at such a low price point?
    Happy New Year and all the best in 2024!!

      Thanks for posting for the first time. I’m glad to see the good word on my videos. Q1) it’s a different style versus the KS Champagne. TJs Sonoma has more weight, rounder and fuller. If you prefer a leaner style, go for KS. Fuller style, go for TJ’s. Q2) Good question. It’s a limited release, available for just a few months. My guess is it’s used as a cash flow option.

      I prefer a standard white wine glass. It allows for much more aroma. Flutes look good, but offer little aromatics, also more difficult to clean.

    Unfortunately, decently priced crémant is something that doesn't make it much into the Spanish market --obviously here Cava is a strong contender at that price level. I'll be drinking a traditional method sparkling made from Albariño! Mar de Frades winery in Rías Baixas is one of those "upper middle class" producers that source their grapes from here and there around the region while they pay a prime for the top quality fruit. They make solid wine though, and now they're expanding onto single vineyard stuff and, well, sparkling. Will tell you how it is!!
    (A small note: I noticed that the first wine said 'méthode champenoise' on the front label. Don't the champenoises fight adamantly against these labelings, or is it that the wine is a US based project from a champenoise maison?)

    • @bobpaulinskimasterofwine
      @bobpaulinskimasterofwine  5 месяцев назад +1

      Definitely let me know how the sparkling goes. I’m not certain who is producing the first sparkling in my video, but I don’t think it’s coming from a French owned property in CA. The back label reads, “Rack and Riddle” which producers many custom labels. As for using Methode Champenoise on the label, it’s a common term used by many in CA. I can see your point, but it doesn’t appear to by a matter in contention.

      @juanmanuelmunozhernandez7032 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@bobpaulinskimasterofwine oh, I see. I thought I'd read somewhere that the champenoises legally pursue every reference to their method, especially internationally. It's good that they don't so much, though. Best wishes for 2024!

      @@bobpaulinskimasterofwine an update about the traditional method sparkling from Mar de Frades:
      The upside: fresh, reductive character with veery clear salinity, showcasing a bit of personality given it's Albariño.
      The downside: Not very complex. Mostly toasty and bready from the lees, with some fruit character on the nose. Mousse goes away almost immediately.
      My conclusion: a bit disappointing. Mar de Frades is one of those top producers in what I call the "NM" tranche of the Rias Baixas albariño market (the very top producers are more like RM, to complete the analogy with Champagne). They source grapes from small producers, sometimes villagers, like most other wineries in the area, but they pay premium for the best grapes from the best sites. I would have expected that extra grape quality to shine through in the sparkling version, but it really didn't.

    • @bobpaulinskimasterofwine

      @@juanmanuelmunozhernandez7032 Interesting. Do you know much time is spent on the lees? Is it non-vintage?
