  • Just demonstrating the speed wobble issue on the KTM 1290 SAR, 2021 Model. Running the At41 Tyres at the moment at recommended pressures.
For me, it only does it when I have a small load on the rear, even an empty top case, and my backpack. It doesn't with the AT41 tyres, and more aggressive tyres I've had in the past like the AX41, it only does it at 50-60 kph speeds (roughly) and mostly when downhill although does do it on flat roads sometimes, it doesn't do it every time, and as soon as you touch the bars it stops so there isn't any real force in it.
I think a better steering damper would probably stop this issue because the stock one is almost pointless, also just keeping your hands on the bars would solve the problem lol
Tried it with the rear pre-load wound almost right up and right down and all the way in between, makes no difference.

Harley riders don’t wave to other riders, if the let go of the bars it’s instant death wobbles 😂

I had this issue on my 21 sas running standard Mitas tyres and used a laser alignment tool to line up the rear. The marks on the swingarm are not bang on. After laser aligning the problem has gone.

Had the same issue on my 2022 SAS. Headstock adjustment, replaced tyres to road 6 and balanced both wheels true. Prior to changing tyres checked and the wheels were not running true. Now over 8000 miles after a big trip, 2 up and fully loaded and all good.

Looks like the aerodynamic compromise of running a top box.
Bike harmonics are tricky bastards, and it could just be a perfect storm (tyre compound/pattern, seating position, weight, aero).
Worth having a chat to Aden at RestoRace to have both front and rear adjusted for your needs, cranking the rear alone can put you further out of whack. Cheaper than dropping the big bucks on a new damper 😅
I've seen you on the road a few times (I'm in Albany), will have to wave exuberantly next time ha.

I discover my 1290sa S does exactly the same, 70/40kmh but I found the issue only today that tried to carry heavy bags. 20/25kg. Tried again unloading all the bags and it stopped wobbling
Edit: after other trials, I put heavy weights (20kg)into lateral bags panniers, so weight is closer to center of mass and much lower than the plate on the back. In this configuration I felt zero wobbles on the steering whatever the speed. So I strongly recommend to load the side bags before the bag on the saddle/rear

nothing to do with tyres.... its the suspension on the back thats to soft.... so more pressure on the back spring and its oké

I hit 100mm ripples at 140 kph passing traffic uphill on my '20 890 Duke R had 3 full on tank slaps instant high side, broke the bike n broke me a bit. Rode my '21 Aprilia Tuono V4 over the same section a week before with no issue.

I have the same problem on my 2022 1290 SAR, when slowing down and hands off the handlebar, without top box it happens around 70 kph, and with top box it happens around 50 kph. Therefore it is obviously depending to the weight on the front wheel, as the weight on the front wheel depends on the weight on the rear (with or without top box), the traction transferred to the road ( accelerating, constant speed, or slowing down), and of course the extra weight you put on the handlebar (hands on or off). I believe that if the front rim is slightly warped (quite common with spoke wheels), there is a bad spot where the combination of the weight on the front wheel and it’s rotation speed, makes it start to wobble. Mine had a terrible wobble at 70 kph, new from the dealer, then I went back to get it checked, and after he has straighten the front rim, the wobble has been very significantly reduced. But not completely. I ask for a replacement of the rim, but KTM did want to do it. Not good KTM.... In my case the relation between the straightness if the rim and the wobbling is evident. I’m thinking to get a brand new rim on my own expense. My 2-cents 😀

I was nearly killed when my 2023, 1290 Adventure S with 3000km on clock picked up a tank slap at 200km/h goning along a straight dual carriage freeway slightly up hill with dealer fitted top box and panniers I am still recovering after 3 months. Why do they do that and other times before at 230km/h it was fine.

My 2022 does it, took it to the dealership, they said there was nothing wrong after they checked it out, and charged me for the service. It only has 3000kms on it, something is definitely wrong if it does that, yet they say everything is up to spec, so there’s nothing they can do. Seems like it needs a better steering damper.

@@captain_midlife I had the top box on, but it was empty, doing approximately 70kms. As soon as I put a firm grip on the bars it stops, so it seems like a better steering damper would fix it.

    • @captain_midlife
      @captain_midlife  Год назад +1

Yeah that’s what it is. The top box. The bike isn’t faulty. It’s an issue with aerodynamics and the balance. A steering damper would help but it’ll only mask the issue

Tighten the steering head up slightly so the bars will stop in any postion while on the centre stand an it'll solve it

You found the reason right in the video: tank slaps only happen when there is not enough weight on the front wheel. Want to experience a tank slap: sit waaay back and accelerate, or do a wheelie and land the wheel while still putting your weight behind - a tank slap is guaranteed :)

I traded in my 21 SAS after just 6 months because of this. There's a video on my channel. I tried every single setting but didn't help. My 2018 v strom 1000 was faster. My 1290 started wobbles at 118mph. Can't go any faster. It was very good for touring with bumot panniers and top box.
