    A very good video. You are becoming one of my most watched moto RUclipsrs fast 😁 After a year of toying with the idea of getting into the ADV segment I finally bought a KTM 1290 SAS 2020 a week ago. I prefer the look of the R version a bit more, but I happened to get a good deal on the S version and honestly, no matter how intrigued I am with offroading I will probably never have the balls to push a 20k€ bike hard on difficult terrain. Realistically 90-95% of my riding is on paved roads with occasional gravel roads and cottage roads, so I am pretty confident that I'm just fine with the S version. I have ridden motorcycles for 12 years (and some smaller bikes as a teen) but still to this day can barely notice a difference between suspension setups, so even if I ever grew the balls to try some gnarlier stuff it's probably fine to just change to some knobbier tires (probably wouldn't even feel the difference between wheel sizes) 😆

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  Год назад +1

      Thank you very much and congratulations for pulling the trigger on the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S. It is such a good bike and even if you do take it off-road one of these days it will not be any worse than any of the direct competitors with regards to supspension or even wheels size (the GS only comes in 19" /17" wheel combo). My riding ist still 90% onroad too so I would have been fine with the S but everytime I do ride away from pavement it is nice to have the R suspension. However, the convinience of the semi-active suspension is really hard to beat - try it out on a bad road next time and go from hardest to softest setting and you will feel how the suspension takes the edge off a bit. 😉

    I have a 2020 1290 S. The suspension is great. I have a lot of poorly surfaced roads in my area and the SAS allows me to go through bumpy turns feeling very stable. Semi active suspension was main reason I got it because my other bikes were sketchy in turns with bumpy asphalt. I do some gravel roads and hard pack dirt roads but do not really intend to use it for any 'real' off roading. Both are great bikes depends on how you plan to ride it.

    Hello from Virginia, I have the same 2018SAS, I live off road , thought about the R , but at 140lbs and 5’8.5” , I realized that I needed to stay in my comfort zone. The bike suits me perfectly, I have long legs for my height and present a modest profile. Thought about changing the wheels but am satisfied with tire changes and make it work. Been riding since 1960 and it’s the best bike I have owned and wouldn’t know where to go from here, may be a Triumph triple 900. Stay safe-- let’s have some more riding😊

      Thanks for sharing your experience Peter. With such a large and heavy bike a solid footing is definitely a good thing. I am 5‘11“ and the 2020 1290 SAR was a little too tall. The 2022 1290 SAR is slightly lower and the perfect height for me. With every new generation of adventure bike the weight seems to increase. Depending on my future riding I may also look at mid size adventure at some point. All the best - Oliver btw I used to live in Arlington for a couple of years (long time ago) 😉

    Very nice breakdown between the two. I recently sold all three of my bikes (2016 KTM 690 Enduro R, 2018 Husqvarna TX300, 2013 Yamaha Super Tenere). My competition days and aggressive off-road days are behind me so I'm looking to get into a new high tech adventure bike. I have been trying to decide between 1290 SAS or SAR or Norden 901 Expedition. This video along with some others have helped break down what's what. My biggest challenge now is determining what type of riding I won't or plan to do the most. I have no intension of wanting to get a big bike into situations much more suited for an off-road specific bike. I do like idea of being able to run gravel and occasional jeep type tails at most with confidence, but also would like touring comfort with an occasional passenger. A little more soul searching and I hope to narrow it down.

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  9 месяцев назад

      Yeah - I get where your are at. In the end it will be a compromise but not a huge one. I still ride a good amount of time on the road but I am happy to have the R suspension - especially the 2021+ models have really seen an upgrade again (that no one seems to talk about). One of the best changes to the predecessor. The semi-active suspension and the automatic preload adjustment are absolutely fantastic on the S model. If you see yourself going from solo to 2 passenger mode a lot this will make life really easy. Choice choices - let me know how you decide and good luck with it. Remember - you can always sell the bike again and get a different one. it is not a marriage for life 😂

    Great explanation, very useful for real World choices. Is it possible to take the SAS and put front 21/ rear 18 as in SAR. Does that alter suspension geometry into suboptimal range? Being an intermediate rider, I do not push either street/sport or offroad envelope, yet mostly adventure touring over forest dirt and gravel roads. I prefer electronically adjusted semi active suspension with less travel over manual adjustment of SAR. Just curious.

      Honestly- in this case I would start with 50/50 tires on the stock rim. If you get to more challenging terrain I would get 17“ and 19“ spoked rims. The second set of same size rims will allow you to swap quicker and use one for road riding and the other for off-road riding.
      IF you wanted to go to 18“ and 21“ the rear swing arm and front fork should not be an issue. However- you need to remove the front mud guard and replace with the 21“ one - not sure about the rear. Also - you need to replace the side stand. Your odometer and speedometer reading will be off.

    Amazing explanation. Thank you. I’m still unsure at this very moment on the newest generation of 1290 (which one to pick). Sometimes you want to have the best of both. I’m still looking for the lowest compromise. Question please - do you know if the latest gen semi active suspension has been improved for off road riding compared to your previous generation SAS? Thanks again!

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  11 месяцев назад

      I do not know if the SAS received any improvement on the suspension itself but you have more possibilities to set the front and rear independently in the electronic settings - so more customization options.
      The 2021+ 1290 SAR did get a suspension upgrade which I think is major - less bottoming out especially for the fork which means I can run it medium stiffness now as compared to the hardest setting on the previous model. Nice progressiv response. Only important for off-road riding (and only noticeable there for me)
      I was blown away by the possibility of setting different suspension modes on my very first 1290 SAS when I first had it. In the end I always ran with a single mode (sport) 95% of the time. Same with my 2022 SAR - the suspension setting that I have works for all riding conditions for me now.
      If the majority of riding is on the road the S may be a good start. You might find yourself liking the semi active suspension enough and you may use all the settings a lot more than me.

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  8 месяцев назад +1

      What a fantastic trip you have planned 👍😉 They would both serve you well. I would give a slight edge to the R as longer suspension travel and better overall components are noticeable when the road surface is not ideal. Also, with a non-electronic suspension there is one less potential point of failure for such a long distance journey. In addition the spoked wheels of the R may be a bit tougher and more forgiving should you hit a pot hole etc.
      the R is a bit taller with higher seat height - that is great for tall riders who can still have a secure footing but for shorter riders the S provides a much lower seat height (adjustable) which may be important as the bike will likely be fully loaded and heavy. I hope this helps. I wish you all the best for your journey 🤙

    Excellent video Oliver. I own the 1290 R also and not having ridden a motorcycle for 8 years and picking up the R last October it was quite an experience to say the least. When i made my decisions about which bike it really came down to the suspension, of course this was influenced by the fact that I wish to do an amount of off road riding. I also live in Germany ( I am Australian) and while Germany doesn't offer very much at all off road we are lucky to be close to France and Spain where the TET runs. I am heading to Spain end of March to the ride the TET from Barcelona to Murcia. Now that I have quite a bit more saddle time on the R I am really loving the experience, I am not a lover of fast road riding but i do enjoy the road as much as trails and to me making the 1400kms by road to Barcelona will be as comfortable as it could be. Having previously raced the 690 Rally replica which weighed almost the same as the 1290R fully fuelled its amazing to me to how capable on road the R actually is, but as you say at its limits there may be so moments to consider and yet it shares so many off road characteristics.. The big 1290 is hard to beat in long distance comfort - I had a short ride on the 890 Adventure (not the R) - and it does not even compare. On the other hand I am also really curious to explore more of the TET in the future but I know there are sections that are challengign even with lighter 2 cylinder bikes. Yes, I have both onroad and offroad. I tried a few laps with the traction control off on the race track (during a training) - with tires at the optimal temperature and grippy road surface that is no problem. I always have the traction control off when I am riding the bike off-road but I will set the mapping to offorad mode, i.e. reduing the horse power from 160 to 100. I have tried the 160 HP off-road but I am not skilled enough to handle the full 100 HP in the dirt to be honest. The traction control works well for most off-road scenarios so there is reall need to turn it off. For normal riding I keep the traction control on and I am happy it is there 😉, cheers, Oliver

      Yes. The S does fine on bumpy back roads. Also you can dial in a different setting on the fly on the S. With that said the R does a slightly better job than the S but not enough to warrant the R model over the S if that is the worst kinda road you intend to travel

    Semi active suspension is great, until it's not. You are limited to the built-in settings. With the R, if the rear is a little harsh over expansion joints, you can simply reduce the high speed compression damping only. You can't do that with the S model, which would make a host of changes based on the built in settings.

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  2 года назад +1

      That is absolutely true - however, very few get into the nitty gritty of the suspension settings on their bike so the semi-active works well for them. I am still getting my head around the possibilities of the R suspension ;-)

    iS THE R model closer to the S model on the road, than the S model to the R model on the dirt?. The R handles better at slow speeds also on the road

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  3 месяца назад

      Intesting question. I would say the R model performs better on the road than the S model performs in the dirt. You can adjust the R suspension to do perform well on the pavement (harder setting). However, you are still left with more suspension travel and larger wheels as compared to the S model and changing suspension settings takes more time on the R but if you only had to do it once - let's say before a long on-road tour it would not be much of an issue.
      With that said - I keep my suspension settings to work well for offroad conditions and ride it like that on the road - it is set pretty much to standard settings with some minor tweaks. You can still ride fast with the R if you want to.
      Especially the suspension on the 2021+ R models is excellent (improved over the predecessor) and far superior than anything else that comes stock on a large adventure bike form any other manufacturer. It is one of the main reasons why I like the 1290 SAR so much.

  • @leanit5756
    @leanit5756 Год назад

    If you really want one of these 2, only the S makes sense in my opinion. I owned the 1290R and now have a 890R. The 1290R really doesn't make sense due to 2 shortcomings. First it is quite heavy on dirt, so an 890R is a better choice there. Second, the 1290 has so much power that the knobbed tire just spins up... either spinning or activating traction control if you have it on. So the huge power isn't actually that useful on the street.
    Also, the ergonomics the 1290R, are wonky with a low short distance between the pegs and seat, and high bars. Also, the exhaust interferes with the riders right heel, even with my size 9 / 43 foot. I assume the S is the same. And don't get me started on the "wobbly tooth" turn signal indicator. It is great for stand up riding though... as is the 890R.
    I would recommend looking closer at the 890s if you are considering on of these two bikes. I am much happier with mine.

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  Год назад

      The 890 vs 1290 comparison is an entirely different discussion that this one. I have been considering the smaller option with the 890 R but I could not quite go there yet. The lighter weight would be great for off-road riding and would allow slightly harder terrain. Then again - I still spend a good amount on tarmac .- also I like cornering, power and speed - for touring the comfort and wind protection are far superior - as is the overall feeling to ride the 1290 vs 890 on pavement (for me). These bike are in a completly different league on the road.
      The ergos are exactly the same between the R and the S - the R only has more supension travel. Check if you can remove the rear foot pegs when hitting your heel - it is not really the exhaust itself but the foot rests are mounted to the same mounting bracket at the exhaust. I removed my passenger pegs for that reason.
      The turn signal switcht is a disaster - they made slight changes to the 2023 models to address this point - not as good as the predecessor but it is MUCH better - I have a brand new 2023 1290 SAR sitting in front of my house right now (as a loaner as my bike is in service right now). So - if it really bothers you an upgrade to the new 2023 controls for the left side my help (would be quite $$$ though I assume) cheers!

      I don’t know if the lowering kit or the springs of the S would work on the R - I would think that not a lot of people would want to lower the the R as the suspension (incl the longer travel) is the main reason to get the R in the first place.
      You can mount a smaller wheel set with 19/17“ dimensions - that is what I use for road riding but of course it would work for off-road riding as well. That lowers the bike noticeably and will keep the suspension intact 😉

      @MotoVibes  2 года назад +1

      Thank you for your comment Patrick - in a way I cover some of the points in this video ruclips.net/video/SgtM3Q3ILL0/видео.html.
      The 1290 is definitely a lot more bike for the $6,000 more in price. It is better in pretty much every respect to the 890 series - more power, torque, plenty comfort, extra load capacity, smoother ride, electronic suspension (on the S) and all the latest and greatest electronics on the market - the 1290 engine is a total riot and the bike is fast as hell - it is called Super Adventure for a reason 😎
      Now, the questions is do you need that much bike for your type of riding? $6,000 is a lot of cash that can be spend on traveling with the bike etc. Also, all the extra bells and whistles come with approx. 25 kg more dry weight which is not an advantage if you plan to do any kind of off-road riding and will limit the type of off-road riding earlier than a lighter 890 would. For road riding that extra weight is less of an issue or none at all. 😉

    Für mich, war nach meiner Centralasientour 2018 mit einer 17er SAS und Speichenräder klar, dass ich auf die 21er SAR wechseln werde.
    Die Federelemente der R sind qualitativ klar besser und komfortabler, wenn abseits der guten Straßen lang geht. Bei mir ging im Stillstand, plötzlich in der Schleuse zwischen Kasachstan und Kirgistan, das Federbein auf Durchzug. Null Zug, Null Druckstufe und die nächsten Fünf Länder kein KTM Händler. Das waren dann 13000 km, bei jeder Bodenwelle, oder Schlagloch, in die Rasten stellen. Elektronikproblem/ Sensorfehler und Dir kann Niemand helfen. Mit dem elektronischen Fahrwerk, lassen sich Schwächen der Federelemente leichter kaschieren, was bei der R somit nicht geht.
    Die 21/18“ Räder spuren besser und rollen komfortabler offroad ab und es gibt kein Hochgeschwindigkeitspendeln.
    Nur das tiefe eintauchen der Gabel, beim plötzlichen, harten anbremsen ist von mir als Nachteil festzustellen.
    Was ist mir an der 21er SAR, als klar besser gegenüber der 17er SAS aufgefallen,

    Motorcharakteristik(läut smoother)
    Handling

    Schaltereinheiten,Schnellwahltasten(warum werden die Auf/Abtaste nun ungenutzt?), Tempomat, hätten so bleiben können

    On the used market I'm not seeing much difference comparing the prices of the 890 and the 1290. They're pretty close, so the 1290 is losing more value over time based on its overall desirability.

      Not sure which market you are looking at. But for brand new models prices drop as soon as a successor hits the market. As the case with the 1290 SA in 2021. you can still pick up a brand new 1290 SAS for the price of a new 890 at some dealers in Germany. Maybe that plays into what you are seeing on the used market

    Why aren't these bikes commonly referred to as S street R rallye. Simples.
    S for me is the best bike, if you want to go off rd buy a cheap light dirt bike. The s is a world beating mile muncher

      A second lighter bike for off-road would be the best option of course. At least KTM offers this kind of bandwidth for those who want it. BMW offering falls short in that respect- the GS 1250 adventure offers little more than a weight increase with a larger tank and unnecessary upper crashbars. Same suspension (a little more travel) and same wheels though. Only Triumph beats same both with regard to custom options straight from the factory 😉

    I have had the 1190 Adventure and now the 1290 SAR. If the 1290 SAS came with spoked wheels, I would have taken that bike. But as I bent some cast wheels on my Husky Nuda 900 R, cast wheels are a no go!
    Honestly, in case KTM offered an option of 19/17 wheels on the SAR, I would have made that choice and taken the SAR with the smaller wheel set. After having spent two seasons with 21/18 I have to say that the selection of tires for my kind of riding are much better in 19/17 (eg Pirelli Scorpion Rally does not seem to be available in 21“ tubeless version!).
    One more thing worth mentioning is that although I am tall enough to touch the ground with both feet, the R model feels significantly taller. This does not matter when you are moving, but when maneuvering the bike in a parking lot or tricky off road situation it makes a big difference.
    You have ridden the 2021 SAR, but bought the 2020 model. I always heard the 2021 is a game changer due to lower center of gravity. What do you think? Is it worth swapping?

      I am still warming up to the larger spoked wheels but I still kept my smaller spoked wheel set which I initially bought for the S model. The 2021 model are overall better but not in every respect- in the end it was the 5000. EUR difference in purchase price that tipped the scale for me 😉

    I love your videos and am a big fan of your channel. But there is a problem that bothers me, of which this video is a good example. YOU SPEAK CONTINUOUSLY AND WITHOUT BREAKS! It makes the experience a monotonous one-way Talking head dialogue, where it is difficult to maintain focus and concentration. As in all music and speech, the break is important. We get time to digest what was said. Save it in memory. I hope you understand what I mean is in a constructive intention.

      Jan - I appreciate your comment. I cut out all the breaks and all the umms 😂 to keep the pace. It’s good feedback that I will consider for future edits and see how the pacing works with a more pauses - I am a fast speaker though 😂

      @@pablohumphs6060 I am happy about constructive feedback and I see the point as it what somewhat intentional during editing- when you see the footage so many times during editing you loose the viewpoint of someone seeing this the first time so I am thankful for such feedback 😉 it will not affect content I have already produced (I usually have quite a few videos ready to go as there are times when my 9-5 takes priority) but I will keep this in mind for future edits.
