I like getting this from side mount and then transitioning to the other side for the finish. Ive seen quite a few people not being able to finish this, even black belts. Thanks for posting!
Enjoyed the pacing of the video and how you explained the mechanics of this submission. 👏 A lot of black belts struggle to finish this submission. You explained it beautifully.
Thank you! Yes I hear blackbelts all the time saying it's a tough submission for them. I know if they focused on the bite they'd have no issue with it.
@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu well, i was one of those black belts 😅 i have made a habit of forcing them to turtle and Ezekiel in the Gi or take the back in NoGi…. Thanks again
Hey Jordan I’m 10 months into BJJ and this video actually helped me catch some unsuspecting blue belts with arm triangles and I’ve gotten the finish a few times. Thanks for all you do your videos are a huge help
Dude, so weird. I was just going for an arm triangle yesterday, and it took me a bit to finish it. This is perfect timing with perfect details. Thanks man. Oh, also Mike shouted you out for inspiring him to offer his signature move as our most recent video. He was nervous about it, but your positive comment on our buggy video gave him the confidence to just go for it, so thanks for that as well!
Your videos have been getting better and better. Keep at it, I really hope this channel blows up! Personally I think the analogies with the scissors helped visualize what I’m doing.
I just had to comment on this video and say that I had my first tournament on Sunday which is today and I won the gold! Your videos helped me get there along with my coach, but I utilize a lot of your theories with prioritizing under hooks and not letting anyone grab my head. And I won my gold medal match with a guillotine choke!!!!!
Thank you Jordan. As my primary finish from mount I really appreciate these tips. One thing I felt helped a lot my squeeze is driving my chest to the mat. Maybe that’s because I didn’t have such a good bite, I’ll readjust and try.
Love this content, killing it. Jordan, what do you think about not fully dismounting to finish? Craig jones teaches keeping one leg across their lower torso/hips so you don't ever sacrifice mount. Thoughts on that? Still seem to be able to apply similar pressure.
With all varying positions there's pros and cons in terms of offense and defense. By going to a low knee on belly it's harder to drive sideways, as the pressure will go more downward and to the side. So I think there's a slight trade in offense, for a trade in defense. Which may often be worth it against these juiced up competitors.
Most of my other classmates are white and blue belts. Almost all of them, myself included struggle with finishing the head and arm triangle. They usually have to squeeze it super hard or go to a scarf hold and try drive their shoulder in with bodyweight. I'm going to start focusing on this submission, with these details. Thank you so much for this explanation, Jordan! I'll see you in Tobago next week. So pscyhed!
I love this! From the bite to the suggestion of trying it one handed, and mounted, and only involving the „full technique“ as a backup. It feels like such a level up for me 😱
Haha, I don't know what's wrong with me. It's not that I'm Canadian. I legit have such a hard time pronouncing so many words right. I love making the videos, but the voiceovers themselves are such a chore.
Just looked at it and seems like it would be a weaker grip. But often you don't need to use what is most efficient to get the job done. Especially in a fight where you squeeze super hard to get the tap. But I may be wrong and it is a great grip. I'll try it out and see.
@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu cool bro I seen it and thought it was interesting. Let me know your take on it when you try it out bro as I think it's underutilised alot.

Hey man, between your theory course and this video, I hit a couple of dope arm triangles tonight for the first time, one even against a higher belt. Your knowledge on bite mechanics has changed my game. Really appreciate the knowledge and looking forward to future content!
Great tips in this video. After seeing you hit this submission so many times in your rolling commentaries, I've made it one of my go-to submission attempts in class. Hit it last night for the first time in a live roll.
Love the finer points to remove space. This is one of my favourite subs from mount. I would be interested in your thoughts on retaining legs in mount for this attack. Thanks.
I had a teacher suggest finishing from knee on belly. It ended up turning it into more of a neck crack. I commented on this and he basically shrugged his shoulders and likened it to a darce where it is sometimes a choke and sometimes a crank. I, personally, don't like to crank on my partner's neck so I appreciate this kind of video a lot. Any tips for making it more of a choke and less of a crank while in mount? Anything other than just getting a good bite?
Arm triangles should never crank. People do all this extra crazy stuff because they don't get a good bite and need to rely on unneeded movements to finish. Just focus on a good bite, then squeeze and it'll get the job done. Practice on a willing training partner and you'll see how little squeeze is needed once you get a good bite :)
Tha k you very much for the video. I get in that position so often, but I rarely finish it 😂. The concept is so simple but I guess it requires discipline.
Been watching your videos for a while. Keep up the work. You explain all of the little details so well and that is something so hard to find for free online. I appreciate it! -Southern Indiana
Great conceptual video once again Jordan, thank you! Have been getting arms jacked up but totally missed getting the bite prioritized - have a mission for open mats tomorrow now :)
Got my first class in today. With my wrestling background I’ve been looking a lot into mounted submissions. Got my first tap with the Ezekiel choke. Now this is another great submission to look for!
Fantastic tips on arm triangle technique, 5/5! If you have the time to answer, what are you looking for from mount when doing the arm triangle to not get rolled into your full guard? I assume you're positioning off to the side, but timing wise I think I mess this up, once I get the back of my head on the arm i elevated I feel like some of the more physical guys roll there before I lock it up.
I’ve been working on this technique a lot recently. I actually put someone out with it, and it was kinda scary. I didn’t think I had the type of pressure to finish the choke, but like you said, you can tell the difference when you’re “kind of” in, versus when you’re actually in
We just went over this last night. I’ve always found that touching your forehead to the mat is a necessary part of getting the right depth behind the tricep, like @1:57
interesting to see you do this with your outside knee pointing out, instead of inside knee pointing in, theoretically giving you more distance and a more offensive angle for the choke. I've pulled a triangle choke off before but with a decently strong squeeze, now I'm working on getting it tight without powering up a squeeze. 1 of my partners is really skinny and I thought I had a good bite on him but it didn't end him. I think I have to get used to the feel of a great bite from mount before getting offside.
I've been trying to submit my training partners with these techniques, I am not being so successful but I will keep working on it. It's because these are different from what I am used to do. But that are awesome tips, I really love katagatame submissions.
That bite is super annoying to get, I think it was one of your shorts showing head and arm that made me start catching arm pit instead of shoulder with cross face and it naturally changes the angle of the bite to close it tight on the neck. Was practicing it with a visiting black belt a few weeks ago while staying in the mount, his escape was fancy and he eventually escaped but it took his over a minute and he was RED like a lobster:) When I asked how tight it was on a scale from 1 to 10 he started laughing and said : 'If I was a lower belt and would have already gone to sleep:':)
I noticed this with my HnAs too. Even with a tight bite my shoulder was going across their chin, not their neck. By lowering my hand to their lat, like I see Jordan doing, and lowering my upper body it put my shoulder right into the neck. HUGE difference. Happy choking!
@@joshmc8814 exactly! I have got people in that position quite often but I always felt like I have to move my body lower in order to get my arm below their chin, since I am 6" it is not always easy to do when rolling with shorter people, it is also hard to hold it when you try to finish withouIt dismounting since once you get that proper tight bite people start oing crazy:)
What do you think about craig jones style of arm triangle. In terms of letting them catch your legs or forcefully putting yourself in a half guard to prevent them from any back roll escapes?
I haven't seen it but there's definitely pros and cons to everything. If you lose the arm triangle from halfguard your back will likely be taken because you're gripping past the centre line with them having one hook in already from the halfguard. It's not something I would recommend for most, but there's certainly merit to it if Craig is having success with it.
I love this choke, and am going to add the lat grab with the choking arm hand for better positioning. Gordon Ryan and Cragi Jones have both spoker recently on the "only" defense, which is to turtle. Thus, Craig, always keeps one leg over the opponent to stop the turtle. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that. (Especially since it seems easier to get rotational pressure if one steps off mount.)
There's pros and cons to everywhere to position your body in terms of trade offs between offense and defense. I think getting to turtle is easier said than done against someone who has a tight arm triangle locked in. A lotta competitors are juicing though so maybe it's more of an issue there.
@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu Thank you for replying! Hey Jordan, I always seem to get a good bite for the arm triangle but when I go for the dismount my opponent moves their arm to their jaw so when I squeeze they don’t tap. How can I fix my head posture when it comes to blocking their arm from moving
Is the arm triangle a good submission to focus on for someone with a heavy top game? I can hold the mount well but I often have difficulty in actually finishing
Depends on the format, if you're talking competition and you're up on points, you can set it up in mount and hold them for a long time using little energy compared to the energy they use to escape. Just don't get rolled over while doing it
It's one of the best subs from mount imo. Especially good if you have a heavy top game. But like James stated you need to make sure you don't get rolled over to bottom position.
I have attempted to get the arm deep as you mention. However, I often run into issues finishing still if their chin is low and pressure is being wasted crushing their jaw. Any tips for this?
Jordan, I am very new to BJJ. 1 month in. When Ive tried this choke before, my opponent survives by taking his arm that would be choking himself and putting his hand on his forehead, almost like a facepalm. Doing this stops me from getting the choke. Will this technique make his counter irrelevant, since my choke is so much deeper than it would have been otherwise?
In sambo you can simply use that very arm you just elevated to hyperextend their shoulder blade by putting your head and own shoulder and pushing forward on it.
I remember when they showed this to me in class, everything was great but they forgot to emphasize how much the bicep squeeze plays a part in the finish. Once I figured it out and started squeezing with my bicep at the end I could get it consistently with one arm
