Great blues guitarist but Steve Marriot also is one of the best blues singers in the world!!! Just love that raspy whiskey voice and his blues vocal interpretation. 🎸🌟👍
I'm here to tell you that Steve Marriott is THE great unsung hero of English music. Just an all-around legend who is unrealized and un-heralded. I love him -always. Ogden's Nut-Gone-Flake is a work of GENIUS.
I agree with Julian T. SM never got the credit he deserved for his talent. He was one of the first “Mods” in theUK, but he was such a student of American blues. His acoustic song with The Pie, “Every Mother’s Son” was as good a rural Mississippi blues balled as anyone from Mississippi could do!

Cassio Trocourt Jagger with ego in hand turned him down, which is not surprising. KR would have likely given him the nod, but it didn't matter as veto power was duly exercised. Interesting to note that Marriott was never known as being an egomaniac, and despite the ability to own any stage he preferred to share the spotlight with bandmates, including Frampton and Ridley in Humble Pie and Ronnie Lane in Small Faces. It took manager Dee Anthony to give Marriott the nudge to become a more dominant front man with Humble Pie, and only after Frampton split.

Today is the 26th anniversary of his death and I never heard this track or saw this performance before, I always thought of Marriott for his vocals in the Small Faces and Humble Pie, and saw a few interviews where others suggest that he wasn't a confident or accomplished guitarist. This definitely shows what a great guitarist and musical force he was. And how sad it is that he isn't around. He's the true mod father and so much more. I'm glad to have lived within living memory of him, Plonk and Mac.
Best Brit soul singer ever and my favourite musician of all time! I have (almost) every bit of plastic he has released. In the Humble Pie days I have seen him described as a guitar maestro but, in truth, his guitar playing was always just good solid support of Frampton and especially Clempson, (who is himself grossly underestimated). I saw the Pie many times live between '69 and '75 then in their various guises, Marriott's All Stars etc for a few years after. He was always amazing onstage. Freddy Mercury used to hold the audience spellbound in his hand during his solo "Day-oh-ee-da-day" solo spot, but I've seen Marriott do the same audience interaction years before filling a huge hall while standing in front of his mike stand singing unamplified! It seems that Steve had real confidence in his vocal abilities but was a little doubting of his guitar playing. Well here is Marriott doing what he always wanted to, showing that at last he is up there with the best of them on guitar, and still way beyond them on vocals. This is utterly AWESOME! It's a true masterclass of how to play electric blues guitar and sing. How sad he had to go when he was at last reaching this degree of skill. Genuine soul like this is found in only a select few each generation. "Bald headed fat little has been"? Couldn't be further from the truth Steve!
Those that dislike this music may not truly be blues fans. Because it don’t get any better than this. There are many great blues guitarist (SRV) and Eric Clapton to name a couple. This dude is right there with them.
Jeeeeeeezzz! I also knew Stevie was the greatest blues-rock singer of them all, but I never knew he could play guitar, never mind like that. Why is this guy virtually forgotten?
There's a place up in heaven ,where all the great guitarist jam. Hendrix, SRV, Greeny, et al. . . . But when they go for a night out, they all go to watch STEVE MARRIOT show them how its done !!
I've never seen this clip before. Steve Marriott has just become one of my favorite blues guitarists of all time. The tone coming from that guitar in his hands is just... Whoa!!! I'm reeling from the impact of what I've just heard.
Wow!!! I really had no idea that he was a great blues guitarist, on top of everything else. Somehow, the pinnacle of stardom eluded this guy. he belongs in the pantheon of blues/rock greats.
We desperately need someone like him today. Everyone is manufactured to hell and there is no heart in music these days. Instant fame has taken the guts & soul out of music, everyone's at it so there no-one special any more. Maybe I'm just getting old. Hell! I am old!!!
Actually the closest band out there that i've heard that comes close to them are the Black Crows . Check out their song Black Betty and you'll be hooked , you will then want to listen to alot more of them . Happy listening . Peace .
billbluez Black Crowes and The Fabulous Thunderbirds both had that soul. after that, not any real ideas come to mind. and that is a sad sad thing, indeed.
Brenda Mayne have a look on here for a british blues/rock band called king king Brenda, you might be pleasantly surprised Brenda, they on fire at the moment and fantastic live
Totally smoked me on this. Fire and soul galore in the vocals I expected, but i think Steve's guitar playing here is the equal of anyone he ever played with. Great rendition any way you look at it.
Saw Steve Marriott back in 1988 in a local pub, the Archery in Eastbourne, (been pulled down now.) fronting a blues outfit. I think they were the DJ's. Not sure. One of the best gigs I ever went to. Pub was packed out band were good and Steve was just great....and I think the ticket was a fiver!!
WOW! I knew Steve Marriott was a friggin awesome singer but I had no idea he was such a brilliant blues guitarist. This is right up there with the greats. Clapton, Page, Green etc
I'm proud to remember that a young Stevie - showed me my first lick - he'd learnt from 'Jeff' the day before at some gig. Steve showed me how to play the Scotty Moore lick over an open E chord - all down at J60's in Manor Park. God Bless him
Aaron Woolley i knew Steve from 86’ onwards ( my flatmate rich newman was playing drums for him. Steve showed me how he set his amps up ( i play guitar).. grear memories , a funny man , quick witted and wise , always passed some knowledge on somehow. Unbeleivable singer and guitarist. As you say , God bless him.
@@humbuck59 we were good friends - i'd go down to J60s on a Saturday drawl at all the guitars - STEVE worked there - always had his sunburst Tele with him - I was 15/16 - and he'd show me stuff in-between serving customers. I bought my first real guitar - a Cherry red 335 from him - my Dad went guarantor . I had a band - the other guys were all close to 20 - we'd play at the local youth club once a month on a Monday nite and get 5 pound for the whole band :) We were setting up to play one particular Monday - Steve and his band came up to us - asked if they could do the gig instead of us - but we keep the money They had a single coming out in about a month and were off on a Sheffield area tour (North England) - They played - That was the VERY first Small Faces gig - and we got the 5 quid :) - they were just amazing !! - truly electric - and what a voice. A month later they were in the charts 'Watcha Gonna Do Bout it' and the rest is history - sadly never saw him again to chat. I still have a Hofner pick he gave me
I am a Clapton fan but he does become boring and predictable at times. Now this performance is raw and pure unadulterated blues. Just the way it should be. Love his playing. And that voice..... wow.
Saw Humble Pie in 1971 in Houston opening for Deep Purple. Steve was flailing on his guitar and cut his finger. Bled all over his guitar.....but the show went on. Overwhelming sound and show.
I love Zeppelin but have to say Stevie would upstage both Page and Plant at the same time. Maybe the English Stevie Ray Vaughan would be a better comparison. Saw him in Hyde Park with Humble Pie in '71, they were utterly awesome. When I get my hands on a time machine I'm going back there, I was 12-years old and - obviously -broke but they were the best days of my life, mainly because of the music . . . that and Lebanese Black!
Love all this British blues rock. Think of all the great artists and groups that ermerged out of bands like the Small faces. Humble pie ,Jeff Beck group. Peter Frampton solo , The Faces , Rod Stewart.
Had the pleasure of seeing him live many times - meeting and getting to know him - late '80's up until his tragic death. Never mind that unbelievable, amazing voice, he was a great guitarist, certainly underrated in the latter department. A lovely, generous man with a wicked - and often self-deprecating, sense of humor.

Couldn't be further from the truth Steve!
good interesting comment. makes a change!
I hear what you're saying but I find his vocals a little harsh...not soulful like Paul Carrack....JMHO....
@@dinopappous6639 try the small faces, pipes were in better shape
Ever heard of Terry Reid ?? also an amazing singer guitarist.. check him out at Glastonbury 1971 with David Lindley on lap-steel very similar guys :)
@@dinopappous6639 years of smashing it probs took its toll ,plus 5he fact as ya get older your voice matures
I've seen two transformative blues solos in my 68 years, this and Doug Sahm at Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin.
Those that dislike this music may not truly be blues fans. Because it don’t get any better than this. There are many great blues guitarist (SRV) and Eric Clapton to name a couple. This dude is right there with them.
Best white blues/soul voice ever.. No one else could do it like this man!..n i smile when I hear my grandsons blasting him out..bless you Steve.💕
Jeeeeeeezzz! I also knew Stevie was the greatest blues-rock singer of them all, but I never knew he could play guitar, never mind like that. Why is this guy virtually forgotten?
I didn't know he was such a stunning blues player.
There's a place up in heaven ,where all the great guitarist jam.
Hendrix, SRV, Greeny, et al.

.
But when they go for a night out, they all go to watch STEVE MARRIOT show them how its done !!
never realized he was so damn good at the guitar, gotta say he's the real deal
So sad He's gone. He was the best ever!
Underrated "musician" the man was amazing !
Steve deserves way more acknowledgement he was amazing
I've never seen this clip before. Steve Marriott has just become one of my favorite blues guitarists of all time. The tone coming from that guitar in his hands is just... Whoa!!! I'm reeling from the impact of what I've just heard.
I agree, and why isn't Marriott in the same conversation with Beck/Clapton/Hendrix/Green/Page as the greatest British guitarists?
I`m so sorry... I didn`t know Steve was such a great guitarplayer.. Damn!!
Never thought Steve could play the guitar that good
Wow!!! I really had no idea that he was a great blues guitarist, on top of everything else. Somehow, the pinnacle of stardom eluded this guy. he belongs in the pantheon of blues/rock greats.
Stardom didn't ignore Steve ! He was a huge star. Guess you had to have been there. Glad I was.
For me still the best bluesrock singer.
Peace .
billbluez Black Crowes and The Fabulous Thunderbirds both had that soul. after that, not any real ideas come to mind. and that is a sad sad thing, indeed.
the thing about being old is at least we saw all the great bands :)
Brenda Mayne check out the rival sons
Steve was supported by The DTs, a band from Leicester. Saw them play in Ilfracombe the following year. Superb.
Greatly underrated Best frontman ever. A true musician and performer
Soul,Blues,Country,Rock. He could do it all. none better.Tops!
The little reluctant mad Mod popper in 1965 comes back 20 years later with some blues. That's some fine wine fermentation there.
We will NEVER!!see his like again. The guy had everything ,the complete package. Steve we miss you so much, RIP, stay cool.
I didn't realize that Steve could play guitar like that!
Me neither but that's bad ass
@@kevindore6120 he was awesome on guitar as well as the piano, drums, harmonica and of course those vocals.
WOW! I knew Steve Marriott was a friggin awesome singer but I had no idea he was such a brilliant blues guitarist. This is right up there with the greats. Clapton, Page, Green etc
Whoah!! Love Steve Marriot!! First time hearing this amazing !!!!
I am so happy that i saw him live on stage
So much soul spills from this man so underrated
Gotta love a bit of the Marriott!
Steve is the most underrated guitar player ever!!!
The Talent of this man. Good grief. Name me anyone today like him. Go on. I challenge you. Just superb.
he's a pint sized monster! some of the best pipes in the business!
Damn I knew he could sing but didn’t know he played liked that. Sorry Mr. Frampton but you did right by leaving. This man is unreal
As you say , God bless him.
lucky. he was my favorite. at least I met Scott More
JEFF BECK!!!
That’s an awesome story mate!
I had a band - the other guys were all close to 20 - we'd play at the local youth club once a month on a Monday nite and get 5 pound for the whole band :)
We were setting up to play one particular Monday - Steve and his band came up to us - asked if they could do the gig instead of us - but we keep the money
They had a single coming out in about a month and were off on a Sheffield area tour (North England) - They played - That was the VERY first Small Faces gig - and we got the 5 quid :) - they were just amazing !! - truly electric - and what a voice.
A month later they were in the charts 'Watcha Gonna Do Bout it' and the rest is history - sadly never saw him again to chat. I still have a Hofner pick he gave me
Steve Marriott is like wine. He only got better with the years! Man! How you got smooth and put together! Absolutely awesome!
He's a bad man with a guitar and a microphone
What a performance! I didn’t know that he was that good!..He is as good as Clapton maybe even better!
ya' know, I just listened to Clapton's version and I agree with you, this is raw, bluesier, nastier and, well better to my ears!
ya' know, I just listened to Clapton's version and I agree with you, this is raw, bluesier, nastier and, well better to my ears!
I am a Clapton fan but he does become boring and predictable at times. Now this performance is raw and pure unadulterated blues. Just the way it should be. Love his playing. And that voice..... wow.
You Sir were never, and never will be a "has been" Great under rated performer of all times
I watched and heard Humble Pie in Santa Monica in the 70's. Im still stoked to this day. 65 and still rockin.
Saw Humble Pie in 1971 in Houston opening for Deep Purple. Steve was flailing on his guitar and cut his finger. Bled all over his guitar.....but the show went on. Overwhelming sound and show.
Page and Plant rolled into one.
For sure!
@Jen Robbie SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TRUE BABY.
Better than both
Marriott's still better than both of them, combined.
used to follow him all over London area great live and sorely missed R.I.P.
Wish I could've seen them on the other side of the pond!! Saw him lots on This side tho! Cheers!
This one makes me feel young again! I'm gonna be rockin till I'm not in this body anymore!!!
Absolutely brilliant from my favourite singer of all time. Great guitar playing too. That was ' da blooze'
A lovely, generous man with a wicked - and often self-deprecating, sense of humor.
good post. i only saw small faces when they were "packaged" - missed the main man in his prime [don't think he toured south america - did see/hear stan getz in Lima. something to remember]. at least some good shxt on you tube. Eat my shorts, mr jagger. steve the real thing.
Didn't realise he was this good. Knew he was soulful
Such a sad loss.. He was my favorite male vocalist ❤
Miss this guy
Steve *ing Marriott. This performance captures the whole essence, his guitar work grew and grew, it’s so in the feeling, and timing. Voice is always been money 💰
