After the departure of Mick Taylor in 1975 from the Rolling Stones, Marriott was considered as his replacement; however, Mick Jagger blocked the move after Marriott acted like a frontman, and upstaged Jagger. According to Ronnie Wood, Marriott was Richards' first choice to replace Taylor.

    Brilliant frontman!
    Brilliant guitarist!
Brilliant singer with soul and guts!
One of the most outstanding talents British music ever had, from a
    pint- sized geezer!
Surely one of the most underrated and sadly, shamelessly ripped-off artists of all time!!!
Totally love this guy, his decline was outrageous!
    Talent like this is priceless.
Just imagine if he ,instead of being in the Small Faces , much as I loved them, had wound up in The Yardbirds.
How things could've been so different .
This sort of talent is shoulder to shoulder with any Yardbird intern.
The Small Faces were beautifully original and innovative!
Humble Pie were a force of nature.
To have fortunately seen Humble Pie ( 70's) and then Steve solo at The Royal Standard in Walthamstow
New Years Eve late 80's is a decline that should never have happened in my opinion.
Steve Marriott is someone who should be in the Rock 'n Roll Hall Of Fame no question.
A talent that sadly we will never see the like again!!
God love this fabulously talented man!!!
    R.I.P Steve!!!❤️🤘🎸

All very true! Steve's vocal range and diversity was truly amazing. Developed as a child and worked at the craft his entire career. As a guitarist, his time was the 1970's on. He was considered a little limited in his playing during the 60's Small Faces. There were better choices at the time for the Yardbirds. He worked hard and by Humble Pie he'd arrived. One of the best. He did go into the Hall with Small Faces 2012.

I'm here to tell you that Steve Marriott is THE great unsung hero of English music. Not only was he a GREAT guitarist -he is rightfully remembered as an excellent songwriter -and is thoroughly un-appreciated as such (back me Noel). He was/is an amazing singer as well. Just an all-around legend who is unrealized and un-heralded. I love him -always. Ogden's Nut-Gone-Flake is a work of GENIUS.

I agree with Julian T. SM never got the credit he deserved for his talent. He was one of the first “Mods” in theUK, but he was such a student of American blues. His acoustic song with The Pie, “Every Mother’s Son” was as good a rural Mississippi blues balled as anyone from Mississippi could do!

Unbelievably, i have only really started listening to Steve this year. I've been flawed. I was born in 70 but never got into the Faces or Humble Pie. Did have the latter in aplay list tho. Discovering this has been mine blowing and sharing it with friends is just great. What a genius with music ruining though his veins and whole existence. When you see his interviews he's such a down to earth and tiny guy! She sounds that comes out of him is just nuts!
I truly believe there needs to be a biopic about him, as he is seriously one the greatest talents the UK had and seems very unknown by most.
The way he plays and sings blues is out of this world. Black coffee live with Bob Harris at the end, on here - with the Blackberries just blew my mind.
Such a tragedy what happened to him.
    Genius

We swapped guitars in 1967 (i think it was), he loved my beaten up sunburst Telecaster so he gave me his pink 59 Les Paul for it, both are on you tube vids.
Then i did the sound engineering on the 1978 Small Faces Reunion Tour, great crazy good fun time was had by all.
He and i sat up all one night in my hotel room until dawn, exchanging r&r and life stories, after a gig in Germany...... he gave me a harmonica which still works great and i absolutely treasure it. What a really lovely great fun guy.

Steve showed me how he set his amps up ( i play guitar).. grear memories , a funny man , quick witted and wise , always passed some knowledge on somehow.
      Unbeleivable singer and guitarist.

@@humbuck59 we were good friends - i'd go down to J60s on a Saturday drawl at all the guitars - STEVE worked there - always had his sunburst Tele with him - I was 15/16 - and he'd show me stuff in-between serving customers.
I bought my first real guitar - a Cherry red 335 from him - my Dad went guarantor .
I had a band - the other guys were all close to 20 - we'd play at the local youth club once a month on a Monday nite and get 5 pound for the whole band :)
We were setting up to play one particular Monday - Steve and his band came up to us - asked if they could do the gig instead of us - but we keep the money
They had a single coming out in about a month and were off on a Sheffield area tour (North England) - They played - That was the VERY first Small Faces gig - and we got the 5 quid :) - they were just amazing !! - truly electric - and what a voice.
A month later they were in the charts 'Watcha Gonna Do Bout it' and the rest is history - sadly never saw him again to chat. I still have a Hofner pick he gave me

Today is the 26th anniversary of his death and I never heard this track or saw this performance before, I always thought of Marriott for his vocals in the Small Faces and Humble Pie, and saw a few interviews where others suggest that he wasn't a confident or accomplished guitarist. This definitely shows what a great guitarist and musical force he was. And how sad it is that he isn't around. He's the true mod father and so much more. I'm glad to have lived within living memory of him, Plonk and Mac.

Best Brit soul singer ever and my favourite musician of all time! I have (almost) every bit of plastic he has released. In the Humble Pie days I have seen him described as a guitar maestro but, in truth, his guitar playing was always just good solid support of Frampton and especially Clempson, (who is himself grossly underestimated). I saw the Pie many times live between '69 and '75 then in their various guises, Marriott's All Stars etc for a few years after. He was always amazing onstage.
Freddy Mercury used to hold the audience spellbound in his hand during his solo "Day-oh-ee-da-day" solo spot, but I've seen Marriott do the same audience interaction years before filling a huge hall while standing in front of his mike stand singing unamplified!
It seems that Steve had real confidence in his vocal abilities but was a little doubting of his guitar playing. Well here is Marriott doing what he always wanted to, showing that at last he is up there with the best of them on guitar, and still way beyond them on vocals. This is utterly AWESOME! It's a true masterclass of how to play electric blues guitar and sing. How sad he had to go when he was at last reaching this degree of skill.
Genuine soul like this is found in only a select few each generation. "Bald headed fat little has been"? Couldn't be further from the truth Steve!
