I saw them down in the other dressing room.They weren't doing so well at that time,so I declined. I'll never forget that experience, Like I said He was so humble and kind.He treated me like I was the most important person there.He'll always be in my heart.What a great talent and generous human being..And great set they played.And what a voice!!!..Thank you forver my brother Steve Marriott...You're always in my prayers...

I am truly a fan of Marriott, not to praise him into the heavens, im don't tend to do that, we're all still just human beings. But he was something special. The feeling his voice, his playing and his stature gives me is almost unmatchable. Only a few can really achieve that intense respect in me. Ok, im out.
The GREATEST singer ever, no fucking contest. I was lucky enough to see the Small Faces, Humble Pie, the reformed Small Faces and Steve's Packet of Three. I met him at the Bridge House, Canning Town, London when Packet of Three played there. No rock star bullshit, just sitting at the bar telling stories and chatting to everyone. He was just a fucking great bloke and a vastly underrated musician. I will never see or hear another singer like him. When he let it go he could blow the windows out and when he took it down it was like a beautiful whisper. No other singer I've ever seen could do what he did. Thanks for the music and the memories Steve.

He is incredible. That voice, his style, his energy, the ease with which he does what he does... Robert plant was good, but Steve was great. Many tried to emulate him, his style, but all fell short, as Steves flow was the original, no-one did or ever will touch him.
Sure, but Humble Pie were one of those great 70s bands that could murder live but they didn't write anthems like a lot of their peers. Their strongest songwriter left before he hit his stride, if Frampton had stuck around in the band they might have had just enough radio hits to keep them from being a "hidden gem" of sorts. Free is another great band that doesn't get enough love, but "All Right Now" kept them at least on classic rock radio enough for people to be aware of them. When you mention Humble Pie you always just have to say "Frampton was in it before he went solo". I could listen to Humble Pie and Steve Marriott all day (I have) but none of their songs have the immediacy or songwriting that made bands like Zep, Sabbath, The Who, and even Deep Purple still reference points today. I always attribute it to being so authentically bluesy that they just didn't care to focus on pop sensibilities (I don't mean that in a demeaning way because there was some great pop then) or single material. The simplest way to put it is that Humble Pie is an amazing band to get baked and get lost in a sea of ripping blues rock, but if I'm going to cover one of their songs it would probably just be doing a shittier version of one of their superior covers. On the flip side, I could slam out Communication Breakdown or Highway Star at a gig and while it may not compare to those bands either, it at least checks the "people know this" box while still being a rock song I love and don't mind playing🤷🏻♂️
Trust me, if you ever saw them live (I did in the summer of 1970 in London) you didn't under them anything. They just blew you away, Those four left everyone breathless. Great musicians!
Jesus! How that massive, banshee wail comes from that little body is nearly impossible to explain. He never seemed to lose steam, just as strong at the end of the show as he was at the start. What a singer, maybe the perfect combination of rock/blues/soul. It's sad he isn't better remembered, but those of us who know can just smile when people debate who is the greatest singer in rock. I also saw them in 73 in Phoenix. The lineup was Boz Skaggs, Foghat and Humble Pie. One of the all time best concerts I've ever seen. It's a crying shame Steve Marriott died so young.
I got to buy Steve Marriott a Beer at a Bar called "The Cellar" in Fayetteville, NC. 1983. 2 weeks later I was drinking one with Artymus Pyle at the same place. Great memories, Great music, Great people.
Somebody once said that Steve Marriott could sing the phone book and it would sound great. I think they were right. What's really cool is Humble Pie are playing their hearts out for what appears to be a local TV show somewhere.... It's awesome. Thanks for posting this.

For me Steve is one of the best blues rock voices. Talk about oozing soul! Peter felt it too and I feel was a much cleaner player. Steve has that edgier raw feel that kicks Pie into soul blues rock depth reached by few.
Really sad that Steve lost the microphone audio at the end because he was really putting his all into the song at that point. I saw Humble Pie perform live twice back during this time period. They had so much talent and energy. And of course everyone knows what Frampton went on to do. It’s such a tragedy that rock and roll lost Steve so early. I sometimes think of what music icons like Joplin, Hendrix and Morrison would have created through the years. Oh btw…I was also blessed to see Jimi H play live also two months before he died. Atlanta Pop Festival II in July 1970. Unforgettable ! 🎸🎸🎸
Steve Marriott was and will always be Britains greatest bluesman. No contest. Met him on my 19th birthday in 1987 and a couple more times before he was cruelly taken from us. The lungs on the man, he could finish a joint in one toke, NICE as the Small Faces used to say.
I heard Jimmy Page wanted him for Zeppelin but he turned down the gig ..... So did another ....I forget his name ..... Then Jimmy was told about Plant singing up North and went to see him and found his man

My first big concert of 10,000 screaming bic-lighting fans!! I was lucky to see them perform LIVE when I was 16 in 1973 at Cobo Arena in Detroit. 3 more X after that. Blew me away all 4X!!!! Epic rock concerts like that don't exist anymore.
For goodness sake, it's the SMALL Faces that Steve was in. I wish people would stop making this mistake! It drives me nuts. That hack Rod Stewart and Ron Wood didn't have a hope of replacing Steve's talent. Even the presence of Ian, Ronnie and Kenney wasn't enough.

...Growing up in the 60s and 70s, I had an elementary school classmate whose cousin was from England. We talked about rugby and football. He then talked about Small Faces, Humble Pie; and this lead singer. Now I know why!
I'm so glad I got to see these guys in the early 70s. Marriott's voice still gives me goosebumps. One of the greatest rock singers ever. He sang with such passion.
I saw them put on an awesome show at the Pocono raceway in 1972 . There were speakers ringing the raceway and the sound was unbelievable. They were one of many bands that day into the night and onto the next morning , with Rod Stewart and the faces landing by helicopter about 5am in a fog and playing until sunrise . My favorite concert of all time.
My very favorite band when I was getting into rock more and more ,,I was just a teenager,,and they were fantastic,,one band that truly showed Peter Framptons true talent

I love the Peter Green and Rumours line ups, but if they got Steve Marriott and Gary Moore instead of Bob Welch and Bob Weston it would've been *dangerous*

I often think who would be the one face that could represent the whole of rock and roll. I can't get away from thinking Steve Marriott would be perfect. He had amazing talent and lived it throughout his history, warts and all with real pinnacles. He faced the worst of the music business along his journey and kept rocking no matter what the business threw at him. He reached some mighty highs and played in two amazing bands that deserved to be in the league of The Rolling Stones. While he kept getting knocked back he kept coming. That's a part of rock and roll few persevere in. I'll say the man makes his own case to be the proper face of rock and roll.
WOW, very well said. You have captured his life and character in just a few sentences. Most who knew him said he always moved forward, loved life, and didn't complain too much. I read an interview from 1985 where the journalist said at first he felt sorry for Steve, that such a star was now playing pubs, but after spending a few hours with him totally changed his mind, seeing that Steve was truly enjoying himself, just playing his music for the joy of it, not missing the fame and all the hassles that went with it. My rock and roll hero. Bless his soul...

For me Steve is one of the best blues rock voices. Talk about oozing soul! Peter felt it too and I feel was a much cleaner player. Steve has that edgier raw feel that kicks Pie into soul blues rock depth reached by few.
Really sad that Steve lost the microphone audio at the end because he was really putting his all into the song at that point. I saw Humble Pie perform live twice back during this time period. They had so much talent and energy. And of course everyone knows what Frampton went on to do. It’s such a tragedy that rock and roll lost Steve so early. I sometimes think of what music icons like Joplin, Hendrix and Morrison would have created through the years. Oh btw…I was also blessed to see Jimi H play live also two months before he died. Atlanta Pop Festival II in July 1970. Unforgettable ! 🎸🎸🎸
Steve Marriott was and will always be Britains greatest bluesman. No contest. Met him on my 19th birthday in 1987 and a couple more times before he was cruelly taken from us. The lungs on the man, he could finish a joint in one toke, NICE as the Small Faces used to say.
Fortunately Steve left us all a great legacy of superb music!
i was super disappointed in his solo album "Marriott". Most of the songs are weak and the production is awful.

I heard Jimmy Page wanted him for Zeppelin but he turned down the gig ..... So did another ....I forget his name ..... Then Jimmy was told about Plant singing up North and went to see him and found his man

For goodness sake, it's the SMALL Faces that Steve was in. I wish people would stop making this mistake! It drives me nuts. That hack Rod Stewart and Ron Wood didn't have a hope of replacing Steve's talent. Even the presence of Ian, Ronnie and Kenney wasn't enough.

I think Jagger called it right; SM would have been a nightmare. I love how Pie were all so in the zone. That performance was other-worldly.

...Growing up in the 60s and 70s, I had an elementary school classmate whose cousin was from England. We talked about rugby and football. He then talked about Small Faces, Humble Pie; and this lead singer. Now I know why!

I'm so glad I got to see these guys in the early 70s. Marriott's voice still gives me goosebumps. One of the greatest rock singers ever. He sang with such passion.
I saw them put on an awesome show at the Pocono raceway in 1972 . There were speakers ringing the raceway and the sound was unbelievable. They were one of many bands that day into the night and onto the next morning , with Rod Stewart and the faces landing by helicopter about 5am in a fog and playing until sunrise . My favorite concert of all time.

Honestly, and this will sound super weird but hear me out; if Rumours never happened and they got Marriott after Bob Welch left I could see it being an oddly great return to the blues.
I love the Peter Green and Rumours line ups, but if they got Steve Marriott and Gary Moore instead of Bob Welch and Bob Weston it would've been *dangerous*

Steve Marriott is good but he is a "One Trick Pony" at what we just saw him do. Making hit records is entirely different than singing the Blues.

Woody was the driving force behind the Faces but became a back up man in the Stones- it was good for his bank balance- so good for him but Marriott would never have faded away like that- so he wasn't a good fit at all.
@@harringtonbenton334 Jagger doesn't hold a candle to Marriott. The only reason Steve didn't make it big is because of poor management. He would've taken over the music industry with his talent if he were given the same opportunities Mick had.

I often think who would be the one face that could represent the whole of rock and roll. I can't get away from thinking Steve Marriott would be perfect. He had amazing talent and lived it throughout his history, warts and all with real pinnacles. He faced the worst of the music business along his journey and kept rocking no matter what the business threw at him. He reached some mighty highs and played in two amazing bands that deserved to be in the league of The Rolling Stones. While he kept getting knocked back he kept coming. That's a part of rock and roll few persevere in. I'll say the man makes his own case to be the proper face of rock and roll.

WOW, very well said. You have captured his life and character in just a few sentences. Most who knew him said he always moved forward, loved life, and didn't complain too much. I read an interview from 1985 where the journalist said at first he felt sorry for Steve, that such a star was now playing pubs, but after spending a few hours with him totally changed his mind, seeing that Steve was truly enjoying himself, just playing his music for the joy of it, not missing the fame and all the hassles that went with it. My rock and roll hero. Bless his soul...
