I saw Humble Pie live in Kansas City the night John Lennon was shot in 1980. What a bizarre night THAT was. Steve Marriott was extremely drunk and possibly coked up. The band only played 4 or 5 songs the whole set. Each song became a long and eventually boring jam. During all of this, Marriott tried to pick fights with audience members on at least three occasions. It was the most surreal, unusual, and sloppiest shit show of a live gig as I have ever seen.
Steve was a rude and out of control fool at that point of his life.Walked out into the cool night when it was over and got into my friend's car, turned on the radio, and heard the Lennon news. I was instantly depressed and my friend, a massive Beatles fan, started bawling (rightfully so...). It was a Rock & Roll night I will never forget. Have been to thousands of concerts and club shows (still see lots of live music), but that night will always stand out...

It was a 4 band show, "The Rock & Roll Marathon" Missouri, Humble Pie, Angel, and Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush.
Humble Pie came out and rocked their asses off.

However, considering he put on such a great performance while he obviously felt terrible and would probably rather have been in bed shows what a trooper he was. Bravo Steve and the Pie. I am touched by the obvious affection the guys show their little buddy. When Jerry picked him up at the end, it brought a tear to my eyes. Oh I know him well since the 60s, love the Small Faces, Humble Pie, as a teenager I bought the Performance album when it was released in 1971 , the two vinyls for weeks on my turntable and till today I love it and all the other great records, love bands of that period, Spooky Tooth,
Free, Steamhammer, Traffic etc......THANKS for this video, never seen it before, I own the dvd from Steves solo inn London and the Beat Club boxes, where Small Faces and later Humble Pie and all the bands around that time was performing, Beat Club was one of the best tv shows in the late 60s and beginning 70s, very new and progressive in that time ! all the best to you and keep on rockin', "Jogi" from Germany, Berlin

When he wrote Fool for a Pretty Face, one of the verses is hurt by love. Maybe should be hurt by drugs. Dont know that he was hurt by love. Women loved him, they didnt love his drugs and alcohol and this performance shows it. Understand he wasnt feeling well on this night, but he got more and more ranchy and raw as the years passed. The charming, dynamic, charismatic and good looking front man was replaced by this guy. Still love him and will always miss him but he is proof that no one can save someone from himself or herself. Drugs and alcohol just consumed him and its just so sad.

The Cain's Ballroom is one of the greatest classic music venues in world. Some of the greatest musical groups of all time have performed there, from U2 to the Sex Pistols (SP were actually not a great musical act but just famous). This area of Tulsa had Leon Russels famous Church Studio and many of the greatest musicians in the world used to come to this area to get together and jam. (Leon Russel was Elton Johns Idol). They helped produce what later became known as the "Tulsa Sound". When Eric Clapton recently came to the BOK arena, he gave tribute to Tulsa, saying "thanks Tulsa" to honor its musicians, some who were his band members as well as his guitar heroand idol "JJ Cale". U2 kicked off their last World Tour here, so if you ever get to go to Tulsa or the Cains Ballroom for a concert, do it.

It had been nearly 40 years since I shot this show, and I hesitated to post it because of the poor video quality. It took over 100 hours to process and render this version - yeah, it was pretty grainy and poorly lit for those old tube-type cameras. But the audio was good and I knew it was a hell of a show, because I was shooting from the front row, center stage!

@@boomer1954ful Humble Pie was formed in 1969 and they were tearing it up long before KISS. Paul Stanley definitely idolized Steve Marriott, as did many other great rock vocalists including Robert Plant. Steve was Jimmy Page’s first choice as lead singer for Zep. The Small Faces manager threatened to break Jimmy’s fingers if he pursued Steve. Steve was legendary, which made it sad to see his last years as they were. R.I.P. Steve 🙏
